    Sophicated sailing on a very sophisticated vessel. Flying the sail like a giant kite to smoothly transfer power to the hull. Dancing with the green eel.

    A smell of tar and turpentine,
    The whistle of wind in stays,
    The hissing wake like passing time,
    Brings memory of old days...

    You can see why they were such devastating raiders. Long, streamlined fore and aft, (making for a high "natural" hull speed) with a relatively large sail for their size. They were devastatingly fast in their time. They could appear over the horizon, charge to shore, and disgorge raiding parties before any effective defense could be mobilized. Even better if they came at night. Then raid the place (facing only the local villagers), get back on the ships with their loot and hightail it back over the horizon before any soldiers could arrive to engage them.

    Tough people freezing their butts off. Can you imagine the determination way back when to leave the comfort of home and sail away to places unknown, in the 10th century they traveled the Americas, I wonder how many died in the attempt to discover new lands. Now we all sit around and complain about our internet service, humanity sure has changed.

      +Dan Slash If the Vikings had Internet service back then and lost it in the middle of a voyage out at sea, they would have complained too! Then they would have attacked their provider and killed some and took the rest as slaves then burned the building to the ground! They paid a lot of silver for Internet service, they expected it to work! They didn't want to hear about "dead spots" in the fjords or Vinland! Sounds familiar.

      @jaggernutox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Craig Auchinachie i belive the minimum for a smaller sized ship like this would be 5. but that would probably be the utter minimum

    Lofotr = Lynx foot?

    • @johnstarkie9948
      @johnstarkie9948 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dan Slash
      I think it’s an adjective derived from the Lofoten Islands.
      I translate “Lofotr Viking ship” as “a Viking ship from the Lofoten Islands”

    • @Borgeviking
      @Borgeviking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lofotr is the old name of Vestvågøy, which is the island in the middle of Lofoten.
      Lofotr can mean lynx foot.
      but it is one of several options
