Very beautiful picture and 18 years after our vikingskip "dreknor" will be launch in Tourlaville harbour...
there is another replica, only half scale, in Vancouver, Canada. Named Munin, she sails pretty much year round in English Bay.
As the ship was being launched and the band played the "Battle Hymn of the Republic", I wondered if that tune was a Norwegian viking tune from way back....
More likely just a popular "band tune" known the world over....
Great job, but I'd just assumed it would be purple, like they were back in the day when they started out millions of years ago in Minnesota.

Hardly. The Anglo-Saxon ships from the Dark ages, as Snape and Sutton Hoo, are difficult to distinguish from Norse vessels from the same period. :)
It is fifteen, disliking people now. Probably ancestors of the peoples living around the Mediterranean. Not the Phoenicians, but definitely their enemies. Our ancestors and the Phoenicians were very close and far beyond most others technologically and culturally, in general.
What distance did they cover pulling the boat like this?

Gaia is still operative. It is stationed in the town of Sandefjord in southeastern Norway. The "song" is the keel singing on the ground logs. The logs are fresh and lubed with cod liver oil, but the friction is considerable.
@@vikingskipdotcom Are there plans for another long trip? Sailing it to Turkey would be an amazing trip.
Víðarr Kerr Not with Gaia as far as I know. She is a veteran ship now and must be treated and sailed with care. There are plans for a trip to Istanbul with another Viking ship. "Saga Farmann" is a replica of a merchant ship from the Viking age; the Klåstad ship from around 1000 AD. It is located in the town of Tønsberg, in the county of Vestfold where both the ancient ships were excavated.

I'm afraid you may be a bit late there. Preparing for such a voyage takes several years, from building the ship, through sailing and rowing trials and finally preparing for the trip.
