What I have done with my hens, I wash my hands very clean. Then I clean the vent very clean too. At that point I push the vent back inside and put on preparation H. Seems to help shrink the imflamation and so far it has always worked. I also put her in a dark place for a day. Turn on a low light every six hours for an hour to feed and water durning that time. Depending on how it looks, (can't be any red, other chickens will peck it) I may keep her up a second day. 😊

Sounds like you've developed the perfect protocol for this condition! Preparation H sounds like a good fix for any poor creature's swollen-up butt tissue.

@@pamelaremme38 I can't imagine why not to use prep H? It works.

    • @pamelaremme38

@@jo9364 I believe it is because if you put it on the prolapse that prolapse is what gets pushed back into the hen. It would be like putting preparation H in your rectum or vagina. Prep H is for external use. I read it on other sites and saw some video's on it but I'm so sorry I can't recall it was awhile ago. After re-reading your comment you apply it AFTER you push the prolapse in. I guess the fear is if it pops out and prep H is on exterior it can get interior. But if it worked for you and no ill effects then to each his own right? I had great success with mine by just a bath with dawn dish soapy water soak. Vaseline and hydrocortizone. That is what was recommended. I had to do it again the next day but now all is fine. (just happened this week.) For the first time in having birds for several years. I changed food from Organic to not organic. I truly believe the GMO food is what causes this. I have researched GMO foods and it disrupts fertility in humans and messes with your gut so why would animals be any different? Just a thought to ponder. God Bless

Thank you for this information. I lost one of my girls, she was 5 years old and still laying. I would push it back in, one to two days later she continued to prolapse and one week later passed away after laying her last egg.

Soak her bottom in really warm water very gently feel for any foreign debris that could be stuck to her tissue. Take your time pushing it back in with steady light pressure. Once you feel it go back in. Keep your hand over the opening in case she try's to push it back out. Dont let it come back out. The longer it stays in the better. Check it every couple hours. See how she pooping. Thank you for your videos.

I had a hen that had a prolapse and I guess I noticed it too late so when I got her inside to quarantine I noticed she wouldnt eat very much and was lethargic so with the hen being a production breed I checked inside her vent and found an egg had broken inside her and smelled rotten. Sad to say but she passed away a day later but was not alone and kept in a safe area. Now I know the signs to look for and pray it never happens again to any of my hens because it was so stressful and upsetting to lose my favorite girl.

I am so empathetic with my animals that it really hurts when I lose one. Someone told me I care to much about my pets. I told that person I am their Shepard and I am responsible for them I take their wellbeing seriously. Animals are treated poorly and I see it as a symptom of the deterioration of our culture. So it's nice to hear of someone with love in their heart. I'm sorry you lost one in your flock. I'm trying to save one too.

I would like to thank you so much for this wonderful information. You saved the life of my little disabled chicken. She had an egg bound so far outside that I had to help her pass it by applying olive oil around the vent and egg. It came out easily, but her vent had prolapsed. I’m so glad I found your video before because I knew what I needed to do. Her vent kept coming back out, and I didn’t know how far to push it in. Eventually, after holding it inside for as long as possible, as you recommended, it stayed in. Her vent was so swollen. I put some honey around it, and it calmed her skin down. The following day, it looked like she was going to prolapse again. So, I made the glucose solution and mixed in some honey and applied it around and inside just the edges. The following day, it looked nice and pink. She pooped and it was fine. I hand fed her. Luckily she ate. I will apply 2-3 times per day as you suggested. I also have brought her inside. I placed her in my dog’s kennel (the canvas type with zippers) and put her in the bedroom with me. I will keep her inside at night, separate from the others from now on. I realized that she can’t maneuver herself well around them, and that puts a lot of pressure on the side that can’t move. I had adopted her, so I don’t know what happened to her exactly, but it looks like she was born with that disability. Her right leg cannot straighten out, so basically, she hops , limps and drags. She’s a happy chicken, but I think she wasn’t able to get good sleep around the others. I have a baby monitor in the coop, so I could see that she was moving around, possibly to find a good position to lay on. On the night she slept inside, she didn’t move an inch. She was so quiet that I thought she had died. I think she was having her first deep sleep. I’ll keep her inside at night from now on, and let her out during the day with the others. Thank you again for your information. It saved her life.

I've had a chicken with this once & I hope to never have to deal with it again. It took weeks of dark quiet segregation & twice a day epsom salt baths. It was a bad case & I'd have to let her relax in the warm bath until her re-tucked in vent stopped pulsing & pushing back out. She eventually came good & is a great layer. It was her first egg & we believe she had been given a layer pellet too early & should have stayed on pullet grower longer as we would have done. This happened soon after we got her at auction.

I just had this happen to one of my hens this week. I always feed Organic feed or non GMO feed. I cut corners because of the cost of feed and I believe this is what caused my hen to prolapse. I have had chickens for several years. NEVER had a problem until feeding them GMO feed. I don't know if you know this but....GMO foods disrupt fertility in humans. It also causes havoc on your gut and gut flora. So it would make sense that this is part of chickens reproductive and intestinal tract right? Something to ponder. God Bless

I ended up having to cull her and believe me it was hard to do but I couldn’t save her and needed to get her out of pain. Note that glucose is not the same as Sucrose (table sugar). Glucose, also known as blood sugar is a monosaccharide, as is fructose (fruit sugar). Sucrose is a disaccharide (glucose-fructose). Honey is sucrose that has been reverted back to the individual monosaccharides along with other ingredients added by the bees.

Would you change diet after prolapse to give break in egg laying? If so what would diet would be good to help this?

  • @phauser3817
    @phauser3817 ปีที่แล้ว

To prevent the chicken from laying an egg, you have to change her environment. Keep her in a dark room for most of the day, feeding her only cracked corn (occasional sprouts for greens). You want to feed her, but nothing that will nutritionally encourage egg laying.
I would take my hen out of her dark crate pen every couple of hours for 10-15 minutes to treat the prolapse, then hold her on my lap to give her hugs and loving attention, and then allow her some time back in the crate pen with minimal lighting, so she could eat and drink, before darkening the room again. If you change the light cycle so there's very little daylight, they are not likely to lay eggs.

Just finding this video now, after I lost a hen last week to prolapsed vent. Found her dead in the morning outside the coop. I didn't check her the night before, but I know she overnighted inside the roost house; the video footage (yes I have a camera inside the roost house 🤦🏼‍♀) caught her backside at one moment at 1am, and sure enough showed a glistening mass. I'm SO sad I didn't catch it sooner 😭 Please explain why sugar water is good for inflammation, and why it would be preferential to honey (which is a lightbulb but makes more sense bc of its other wonderful properties). Also please say how long (minutes /hours...?) you sat holding hen with paper towel to her vent stopping it from re-prolapsing? Thank you for all your honest videos!

Do you continue the sugar water in the vent even when the prolapse is healing? It’s been 4 days now since it’s been ok. But she hasn’t laid an egg in 6 so I’m waiting to see if it’ll stay in once that happens. Thanks 😊

Can you help me Miss President of Chickenlandia? My chicken has been sneezing for weeks and I noticed recently that she's been rubbing her beak on any hard surface she can, like it itches or something. I've been using VetRX on her and it's helped with the wheezing and open mouth breathing but it appears that something is irritating her beak and I don't have any idea what it could be. Any suggestions?

Today, I noticed another one of my guinea hens had what looked like a ball of something out of her ven. I had no idea about prolapse and i think she has an egg stuck as well. I noticed something sticking out of my chicken today, looked bulbus and vainy, but then it disappeared. I looked at her, and it was gone. Any idea what that was/is?
Also, she as poop stuck to the bottom of her rear real close to the skin. We got most of it off, but the other was so close to skin, I was afraid I was going to hurt her if I tried to snip it off. We looked up info on it, and the only info we can find is putting her in lukewarm water for awhile, and start to soften it up and ease it off. But someone told us, if our chickens have worms, the the water can drive the worms crazy, and will actually kill our chicken. What should we do?

How the heck does sugar bring down inflammation??. Dont get it... That is what causes most of the inflammation in the body...

I think it’s just that it tightens everything up. Definitely different topically than ingesting it, which would not be good especially for a chicken.

I just dealt with a prolaped vent on one of my hens. The first time in the 9 years of owning chickens. Sooooo I stopped to THINK, what have I done differently? Answer: I switched food from non GMO or Organic feed. ONLY because I have meat birds now and they are eating me out of house and home so to cut my budget down I bought regular chicken feed. I am almost POSITIVE it is from the feed. GMO foods disrupt HUMAN gut flora and reproduction so it makes sense. I am going to switch back to my organic feed. If prolapsed vent does not work the first time keep trying. I had to do it the first time ever and I was so nervous. I soaked my hens but in water for almost 20 minutes. It took but the next day I had to repeat. I was also told this can go on for 30 days. DON'T give up. If I can do it anyone can. You are suppose to put your hen in a dark room to prevent her from laying. I didn't do that but it worked. Who in the world would stitch a hens vent????? OMG. You can do that with pigs or cows but NOT a hen who lays eggs. I would also NEVER put HONEY on that area. Other hens will smell that and start pecking. Vaseline is what needs to be used.

Thank you madame President !!! I think prolapse is mostly due primary or secondary to calcium deficiency because muscles have to have calcium to contract. I appreciate you not filming an animal in distress, I would not do that either!!! Glad everything is going well, may Jesus bless your family (including chickens)!!!!!

Sometimes when the chickens need to stay immobilized because of injury I wrap them in a thin towel and a put them in a dark space until I take them out to feed. Salt was looking so cute in the pet carrier !!! Glad she’s okay !!!

QUESTION: Do you put the gluclose solution inside the vent once the prolapse is pushed back in or just on the outside area? Also could you clean the area with Hydrogen Peroxide before putting it back in?
Some say to put Preparation H on it....Thanks!

@@voiceofmanywaters3720 , I probably wouldn’t put hydrogen peroxide like on the intestinal muscosa, I think it might damage it. I had a chicken with prolapse from gleet and I feel like it damaged tissue. Prep H or some petroleum based product is probably best on the prolapse area.
