    Thank you all for the feedback on the new style of this video. I thought I would try something different, more vlog-like. It’s not how all transformations will be so don’t freak out I just wanted to try lol. Thank you all so much for watching ❤️❤️

      I hope you keep experimenting--there's actually a lot of cool productive comments throughout and obviously varied opinions--you have a lot of strengths, so you have more video-style options than some do!

      Hey April! Love the video. Just a suggestion, but have you tried looking at the tension for your thread? That generally is what causes the looping/tearing for me, especially when I'm changing the presser foot to a rolled hem foot. Depending on what the thread is made from, you may need to loosen it up a bit/tighten it.

      I actually preferred this type of video. Just one opinion, but I really enjoy you adding more of your personality into the video! Either way though, your videos are still great!

    I love this new format you did, kind of like a vlog and how you shared the flaws and the things that frustrated you. That's so important! It shows that everyone makes mistakes and inspires us to keep going even when it's hard!

      It’s not her annoyingly interrupting the video, it’s her showing additional things she’s done to complete the dress. And everyone has slip ups when they do things. I appreciate that she showed the slip up in the making of the dress because it shows that she’s human, just like the rest of us. So if you have a problem, keep it to yourself instead of putting others down.

    Happy New Year! Beautiful fabric and beautiful dress transformation. Sharing your problems in sewing the dress as well as the good points is a real encourager. Makes me realize sewing machine issues happen to all of us and it is a learning process. Those tips and tricks we learn through experience and share with each other are such a big help.

    Love it! I so enjoy your videos April.
    For someone who has been sewing since I was 17 and now am 57, self taught at that, I am so inspired by your work. But several years back I lost my motivation and desire to do what brings me happiness. Long story, don’t wanna bore you or your other subscribers. But I keep watching your videos in hope it’s not too late for me and I can get back to that driven, motivated, crafty, creative person I use to be. One of my biggest fears has always been disappointment. Afraid whatever I’m working on will not turn out the way it should or I think it should. Again, disappointment! I know I must over come this....and I’m working on that. I love the way you took the fact the wrap around skirt was longer then the top....but you just turned that into a positive and that’s one of the things I admire about you! Thanks so much for sharing.

    I really like that you sew different types of fabrics to expand interest away from solely using stretch knit fabric for every project- truly the mark of a fashion designer!
    I never would have thought to use a half circle skirt pattern for this dress ...

    I like that you pointed out problems you had, but I'm not sure I really like the new vlog-type format. I really enjoy how informational and to the point your videos usually are, and in my opinion the vlog cuts where you talk about what day of the week it is and what you still need to do, and the part with your hair, kind of take away from that. That's just my opinion though, still love this series.

    The finished dress makes me think of the 1940s/50s 'playsuits' that were worn to the beach--this would be perfect over a swimsuit because it goes on and off so easily and wouldn't need to touch the sand/changing rooms!

    Love this wrap dress!
    I hate when I have thread problems. Maybe the hemming problem was a dull needle. (even new needles can be dull/duds) My second thought was the bobbin wasn't quite right. ie, an extra loose randon thread tail caught in bobbin case or thread not quite threaded in the case properly. Hope this gives you some clues if it happens again.

    • @me68206
      @me68206 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree totally with this comment. Also, sometime you need to adjust the tension on your machine when you're doing a particular stitch or using a specialized foot. Consult your machine manual.

    • @heatherlyday2723
      @heatherlyday2723 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It does show how long it takes her to make the transformations. And again, it’s not interrupting, it’s her showing the ‘step by step’ process as well as the duration of time it took to make the dress. And I for one, just like all these other positive comments, like how she formatted the video. So if you don’t like what you see, don’t watch. Don’t try to make April feel terrible for trying something new.

    • @BaconRaptor
      @BaconRaptor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it is indeed interrupting because it disrupts the flow of the whole video. And as many like comments there are, as many dislike ones there are!
      btw, I have to strongly disagree with your last sentence, because telling someone what you don't think is well done helps way more in improving! you can't do a better job, if no one tells you what can be done better! So positivie and negative comments are both very much needed. She sure doesn't feel bad, because all of those negative comments aren't bad, they just say that they have the feeling that those vlog parts interrupt the video. And that information is very important to make the best out of the new type of video she'd like to make apparently.
      so - everyone has their own opinion and each opinion is allowed to be out there. what's really annoying are people like you, you tell people to don't watch sth, just bc they don't like it - because THAT type of comment is the one that's really useless! ;)

    • @JoDidntHearYou
      @JoDidntHearYou 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BaconRaptor I get your point. Constructive criticism is just as helpful as reaffirming encouragement. Perhaps the other person was trying to emphasize that it’s more about how a person frames that criticism rather than just saying they hate the video?
      Ps. Your username is great 😊

    I really liked your advice about taking the first cut! There are so many projects I want to do but am too scared that the first cut will mess it all up or not know what to do exactly yet so I wont start but I'll try to push past that now! Also I liked your advice and like mini review of your new rolled hem foot since I am about to buy one and any hints on how to get it to work or things to avoid is super helpful! It's another great video, you sound tired though in your voiceover. Take it easy and make sure you prioritize taking care of yourself, it's not always about uploading a video on time.

  • @RandomlyTaylord

    You may have had a dull sewing needle. I find with my machine if my needle isn’t super sharp, it will start skipping stitches

    • @AGirlCalledLevi
      @AGirlCalledLevi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I was going to suggest this. Sometimes, if the needle has a slight bend in it or the tip is worn away it wont catch the bobbin hook right causing the bobbin tension to get all messed up. Cleaning the bobbin case and housing can also help.

    • @JoDidntHearYou
      @JoDidntHearYou 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow thank you for the tip!

    • @katwothe2705
      @katwothe2705 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This was my problem! I cleaned out the bobbin case and housing too, but I didn't realize how long it had been since I changed the needle. Although I use cheap thread as well which usually for me catches too, but I'm thinking it was the needle. Finally working great again. Thank you for the tips! :)

    • @hweiyilee6559
      @hweiyilee6559 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +1 and also must take out the plastic bobbin case and clean under it!! When putting back, there is a "lip" on the plastic case which has to meet in order for the bobbin case to be pressing on the tension screw -- this link will show a very good illustration for folks who are interested -- sewing.patternreview.com/review/machine/6097. Been there had same problem, sister model machine (HZL-G210) so sharing what helped me...

    April, check under your bobbin case for lint. Lint build up can cause tension issues. The roll hem foot can be great & frustrating at the same time. I made 60+ colorguard flags with the rolled hem foot. I get it. Love the transformation!!!!

    Always use a good quality cotton,change needle ,rethread machine ,clean machine,oil, just go through all the stages to clean your machine,properly.You can do a test sew after every stage to find the problem.This can save an expensive trip to a repair shop. With the roll hem foot ,keep the fabric at an upward angle when feeding it through.There are lots of brilliant tutorials on you tube.Love the fact you show the problems as well as the result. Don't put so much pressure on yourself to finish by a set time.Id rather you enjoy and miss a week than feel you have to produce a garment

  • @bjspyder4148
    @bjspyder4148 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good quality thread is always a must. Also, a new needle, and making sure you have the right size and type for your fabric will help. Rolled hem feet are just a pain, but practice does help.

    The vlog parts of this are super cute and I love them but I totally get why people don't like them and that's okay. I feel like as long as you switch it up every now and then, everything will be okay. I did however love that you included things that you weren't quite happy with in the finished product. It makes beginners like me feel a lot better about not having everything look perfect in the end of my own projects. I find it really cool and inspiring that someone I look up to and admire also feels like they have room to improve. I love your videos! 💖💖

    Hi April! Happy New Year and I may have a trick for hemming a round skirt with a rolling hem: I do a single row of stitches before I start hemming. The cloth won’t stretch. You can even gather it a little bit if needed.

    • @JoDidntHearYou
      @JoDidntHearYou 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diana Voermans are you referring to a stay stitch? Or would you back stitch at the beginning and end?

    I too am learning to use my rolled hem foot. it's just a matter of keeping that fabric in position JUUUUST right. Otherwise you end up with the extra sticking out or miss out on the double roll. It's quite the issue as there is no real fix. You just have to hold it right and hope you are getting it.
    Personally I like my stuff to look pro too, but I don't beat myself up over it if something minor happens cause it's for me and I'm not selling my stuff.
    You did a lovely job, it's very cute on you.

    I have a different machine so I don’t know if it’s the same issue but I get that same problem with certain threads, usually I find that the thread doesn’t wind onto the bobbin properly it will tangle or catch in spots and it messes up the bottom tension of my machine. Dull needle or stitching over a pin will do that too. Hope you figure it out!

    If your thread keeps breaking try changing the needle and adjusting the tension on your machine. Your rolled him foot isn't working because you need to give it more fabric to roll. You should let circle skirts hang for a day or two and then cut them even again before hemming. Hope all this helps!

    All your work is so nice. I'd like to see the fabric tags at the beginning of the project- what type of fabric is each of the projects and what are the care instructions? Thank You! Beautiful work!

    Check your thread tension. That's always been the cause of loop issues for me.

    It's a very pretty upcycled wrap dress . I know you had a limited amount of fabric to work with but what other sleeve options would look still this soft & flowy dress ( am not comfortable wearing skinny straps cuz of my build) ? Reference to some drawings or another video would be a great help. Thx a bunch.

    in my own experience creating a wrap dress I would sugest putting the darts on the area near the armpits (like april did on that denim halter dress) instead of at the waist, it avoids that loose area aroud the bust/armpits and works much better with this type of dress!!

    You may need to adjust the tension on your machine. Super cute dress though!

    Instant like! This is a great first video of the year, April!
    I’m sorry you had so much trouble with your rolled hem stitching :-/ that’s so frustrating. But I can say that I appreciate you adding in the “learning experiences” to your videos.
    I love it when a person with your level of skill talks about continually learning through making mistakes. You rock my face off, April! I can’t wait to see what you learn next :)

    Keep making the vlog style 😃 I make sewing tutorials too and I also felt that not showing the process doesn't show everything b/c keeping it real feels more relatable. Btw, the dress looks beautiful!!

    One other option is that your machine isn't winding your bobbins properly. This is WAY more common than most people think, which is why pre-wound bobbins are a thing. We use them in the shop on the Jukis, but I also just recently ordered some for my home machine and they make bobbin issues a thing of the past!
