For real tho. I lost a bunch of photos when my computer crashed and required a factory reset... Now I keep everything copied on, like, 3 different things.
The German dub of "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" was considered lost media for a while until a rather fuzzy sounding but decent quality VHS copy surfaced in 2016 and uploaded to TH-cam (in Europe, the pre-2010s Charlie Brown specials didn't get region blocked back then). It stayed on TH-cam for two years, amassing around 150,000 views until the uploader took it down themselves for a really stupid reason: He didn't like how the only publicly available copy of the dub was a 480p VHS copy with fuzzy audio... I mean, it's better than nothing, right? Nobody had a copy saved and the dub once again became lost media, with all efforts to track down different copies failing and being abandoned by early 2020. Thankfully, a good quality copy resurfaced in November of 2021. What's also odd is that two months after it resurfaced, it aired on TV for the first time since 2009.
Maybe someone seeing the TV listing saying it'll be aired spurred them to Google it snd they saw it was lost - or an article came out saying it'll be aired and is considered lost? Or it could just be a weird coincidence
Reminds of a similar issue, there's a Spanish dub made in Mexico for the Latin-America audience for a 90s Disney cartoon called "Jungle Cubs" which served as a prequel to the Jungle Book movie. in the Mexican Spanish dub, it's known as "The Jungle Booklet". Unlike the Castillian, French, German dubs, etc all which are available on dvd releases, the Mexican dub was never re-released or re-purposed for dvd sales. This means that the only way you could watch it was if you still had a copy of the VHS tapes. There have been uploads of this Mexican dub but they're usually recorded with a camera/cam-corder so the quality is faulty at best. So, unless Disney + decides to make this cartoon available and included the Mexican Spanish dub, or unless someone who's savy enough to properly VHS-Rip the tape (or even a TV-rip) unto a computer; getting a good quality if not HD version of the Mexican dub right now is going to be near impossible, and ALL episodes of this dub won't properly resurface anytime soon.
Here in Brazil the very same thing happened, pretty much a lot of old dubs of Charlie Brown were available on youtube throughout the 2010s, until around 2018/2019 they began to be blocked, and now we can't watch them anywhere. I am aware that some people still have them saved but they either don't upload it to other sites, or they do but said site blocks it too after like, a day.
@@kittykittybangbang9367 for the most part, yes, but even when uploading something to the internet archive, you’re given a notice saying it can be removed at any time
Lost media archives usually are better than TH-cam. You don't have to have major currupt corporations pulling a dmca take down on a piece of lost media found, causing it to get lost again. Or just make Cartoon Network and other channels put the lost episodes from they're channel on they're websight wich is harder. Preservation is key.
what this is telling me is that...a lot of people are way too comfortable with being like 'oh, well its on the internet so its ok now!' like....no? save it yourself as well. become another holder of that media. save it to your computer and then share it when it disappears. the more people, the better.
People say stuff like "once on the internet, it's always on the internet" and that's why they get confident once a piece of lost media surfaces. Lost media in itself completely kills that quote too lol.
that tells me you youngns are spoiled. back in my day every byte of hard drive space was precious. couldnt just archive things out of boredom or chance. you had to REALLY love something to keep it.
I feel like Ulala's swinging report show could come back nowadays as like a Vtuber show tbh, it wouldn't be as hard as doing a full mocap/animation rig, and things could be gotten out in a timely fashion
Absolutely. SEGA already has a Vtuber style animated video featuring Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog, so while the chances are low it's definitely within the realm of things that could feasibly happen!
Yeah honestly I’m surprised. Sega and their affiliates have plenty of characters they could use as a vtuber for promotional reasons. Sophie from Persona 5 Strikers also come to mind, since Atlus is a part of Sega. In fact I think Atlus did something similar for the reveal of Soul Hackers 2, though not sure if that counts. The whole vtuber thing makes it shockingly easy for companies to bring their characters to life as if they actually worked for them. It’s kinda amazing.
@@Leons-Online I seem to recall Sonic getting a Vtuber model as well, I don't remember if it was for a collab with Hololive or what. I know they've had Korone as a guest for some SEGA stuff.
@@TheGuyWhoIsSitting Iirc, Sonic straight up told Korone he hoped she would play better. And people were unsure if that was encouragement to improve or a lowkey roast.
Paramount doesn't really seem to care about stuff like that at this point, especially when their losing so much money on how they treat properties nowadays, Lost Media is the least of their worries.
@@gracekim1998 I mean, he's not wrong. With how they treat properties like Star Trek, its no wonder they're bombing as they are cause of terrible writers that care more about activism then writing a good story.

I haven't watched it but from what I heard, some episodes were really ahead of it's time when it comes to social matters Also woke has become such an annoying word, either it gets misused to oblivion or people just randomly bring it up on something unrelated for no reason
As a KND fan I'm more than aware of the fandom's poor attempts to archive things. We have found various pieces of old concept art in the most random places though, so I'm hopeful something will turn up eventually. It'll just take a hell of a lot of digging to get to it.
I don't understand why Viacom cared about the Space Channel 5 pilot. Like, did they just realize it was up and like "Oh no, we better take down this forgotten pilot we didn't even know was online for 15 years."
Viacom is the ultimate enemy of TH-cam. They were the first to send out a massive lawsuit to the site back in the late 2000s which we can probably attribute to TH-cam's paranoia around Copyright strikes snowballing into their horrible practices these days.
The copyright team is full of jerks who don't care about preservation. I'd love to talk to the idiot in charge of the strikes for being so dang stingy.
movies are long, usually over a hour long a whole ass team works behind these movies so much work so it gets lost I miss doraemon robot wars, I still hope they find it someday

The fact that lost media being found and then lost again is such a common occurrence just goes to show that if there's a video, image, or what have you that you like be sure to save it. And don't just keep it in one place. You should always have 3 or more back-ups if it's something you find really important. One copy on physical storage that you will always remember the location of, one copy stored off-site for safe keeping in case of a fire or other disaster, and one stored on a digital archive like the Internet Archive. Give a physical copy to a friend or family member if you really want to be safe. Just because something is on TH-cam or Google Drive doesn't mean it'll be available forever, so keep your links safe but your data closer.
To quote Cybershell from his Operation Soda Steal video, “If you see an internet video you really like, and you theoretically might want to watch it again someday, you should download it. Don’t just assume it’ll be there forever and that somebody else will do it. Anything can be taken done at any time for any reason. And the only guarantee you’ll ever be able to watch something again is if you literally have it backed up to your hard drive.”
This makes me wonder on how many lost media movies, shows, etc were unfortunately lost in this matter, and how we can be more careful when it's lost media related
My heart broke when I heard about The City Gone Wild's fate. I agree, we should be downloading all found media on our own computers. The more copies that exist, the less likely that they will get lost.
Things like The City Gone Wild make me realize how much we take the media we have today for granted. All the films made today are preserved in a digital format, so they can always be preserved. Aside from that, we have internet, streaming, and home video to watch our favorite movies and shows at anytime. When films first began, and even during it's Golden Age, films were like performances: fleeting. Rarely would any footage stand the test of time. People can work as hard they can to retrieve them, but it's safe to say that not all lost media can be found. I also don't understand why Warburton couldn't get permission to make Operation: TREE. Isn't parody under fair use, regardless?
Depends on how deep they wanted to go. It may have been a network thing as well, Cartoon Network probably requested they get the blessing of the estate. They also turned down the potential continuation of KND... so who really knows?
I once heard Weird Al actually asks for permission for the songs he parodies. Asking for permission is a 100% guaranteed way of not getting sued instead of making the product and hope someone doesn't pursue legal action.
You'd be surprised how much new stuff goes missing too. This is why piracy is awesome and cool, because companies have no qualms against pulling stuff off of streaming sites or copyright striking obscure 15 year old, non-monetized re-uploads.
The original silent Gatsby is another interesting one. I bring it up since you showed it in your video. My dad's english professor in college (who was like 70+ yrs old in the late 1970s) said he saw it in the theater and that it was bad. It focused heavily on the flashier parts of the book like the parties and sidelined the story. There was a copy rumored to be in Moscow, but it has never resurfaced, only the trailer (which you showed). So many of those silent movies have missing cuts (for censorship reasons) or are missing all together. Of the silent era we have maybe like 10-20% of them (if that)
It's always important to remember that 99.9% of corporations don't care about a preserving media only making a buck and holding on with a death grip onto copyrighted/trademarked media. Which is to say nothing of the problematic stuff that they would rather bury for obvious reasons. Corporation is rarely if ever making an attempt at preservation nor have they much in the past except very recently. Much like with everything it falls upon a dedicated community to do that, for the future.
Daily reminder that piracy is a victimless crime. These companies aren't victims, they don't give a rip about preservation once they've made their money.
Oh wow, I'm glad to see my report on the Space Channel 5 MTV pilot get a mention! There was a funny coincidence with that. At the same time I was making the post on the Lost Media Wiki, I was already in contact with James, as I was interviewing him for one of my videos. When it was discovered he was the original uploader, we both found it quite funny. If I knew he was the uploader, I could have saved a lot of time!
Oh hey, I thought I recognized your username! Once I read the third sentence of your comment on wards it clicked in my head where from! What a funny coincidence, quite the small world!
The lesson is: If they found it, Download it. And yet better if the one who finds it offers a (non-Mega) download link. It doesn't matter if was never released but some soulless company claims its ownership, their tie-wearing rabid dogs will be ready to own their bread by ruining people's fun
Thinking about Megaupload always is just so sad to me. There's probably so much lost media that's on there that will likely never be seen again because movie companies are so scared of pirated movies that are everywhere currently. It was recently revealed that the servers which were previously thought to have been wiped/destroyed still exist, but are technically being withheld by the FBI.
This is pretty small compared to other stuff out there, but three music remix stuff that always stuck out to me after listening to them for so long years ago only for the channels/videos to disappear, was a Dracula9AntiChapel remix of Castlevania's Bloody Tears in MMX2 and Z4 style, a remix of Sonic Advance 2's True Area 53 by WitchChao, and the entire SYNTHLORD channel, which always made cool TEKKEN remixes. Of all these three, I only managed to get a small bunch of Synthlord previously lost remixes as I found someone's video with them on a Tag 2 playlist and asked him to reupload those songs since they were gone (thank you FightersLegend, you're truly a legend), but Dracula9, while mentioned keeping the old project files in case someone wanted, hasn't brought it up again when I asked him about that missing upload (since he took it down due to "not being up to his quality standards today" or something like that), and that one WitchChao remix seems outright lost in time as there's not a single mention of it surviving anywhere as the remixer also disappeared and only a few other remixes from it were reuploaded. ...so yeah, even your favorite remixes of video game music you can hear for hours and days can end up just...disappearing overnight, with a chance that you might not ever hear them again...
I was having an awful day today, genuinely awful, but luckily my favorite youtuber of all time posts and my day is instantly saved, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, your uploads are my comfort videos, you have a huge impact on my life, and for years and years you’ve made my days better. This is one of my favorite videos by far. Keep it up LSSQ. And please don’t stop. You’re an integral part of the community and we don’t know what we’d do without you.
I had a western civ 2 teacher who dressed like a Victorian dude ( pocket watch and everything ) and one topic he talked about was how all media is going to degrade and things will get lost. At the time CDs were still the rage and people were like no, that’s not going to degrade like books and stuff. But here we are. Books, films, music, and a lot of other things are just gone because the hard copies are destroyed. Even streaming has this issue because if a server and backup fail it’s gone forever.
I vividly remember AKA Cult Cartoons, it used to air on late nights on Cartoon Network back in my country (Portugal) It brings back so much memories and the funny thing is it sorta introduced to me about hiphop and turntablism (art of mixing with record turntables) since it was a "gag" between switching on cartoon episodes. I remember a youtube video that actually had a 20 minute piece from one of the episodes but after searching it seemed that it was either taking down by copyright or deleted unfortunately. AKA was probably one of the best video editing by any form of media before the internet or even youtube got popular!
What year exactly was this? The current CN Portugal uses Portuguese audio, and launched in 2013, but the pan European version of the channel also aired in Portugal for a while. Which version did you see AKA Cult Cartoons on?
Something like this happened to me with a personal piece of (now) lost media... there was a policy trailer at a local theater I used to go to that I had memorized word for word. They'd uploaded it to their TH-cam channel and I had it saved to my favorites, but I never thought to actually save the video to my computer- and a few months ago they put it on private. I keep trying to contact them to ask about restoring it but I don't think it's anyone's top priority, haha. Back up your stuff!
I find it truly fascinating that some companies would rather take down recently found lost media than just leave it be. To be fair they are completely in their right to do so, but It’s just weird.
I lost a song two times, a song from 2002 played on the radio & TV a lot... then not again. i re-found it in 2007 or 2008, and same with another song from 2001 i re-discovered in 2005
Thanks for reminding me of how most of the episodes of Billy and Mandy’s Indian English dub titled Haddi Mera Buddy became lost in 2019. They were up on daily motion and YT since around 2016 and have stayed up for quite a long time. That is until Turner took down every single one. Now they’re all lost except for the episode “Opposite Day” which has been reuploaded thanks to Gary21115(RIP)
There was a silly TH-cam video I used to watch back in 2017 that the uploader has now privated. I looked it up far and wide online until I found a link to it. I put that link on the Wayback Machine and thought "ok, it's 6 am now, I'm going to sleep and I'll upload it to TH-cam when I wake up. But then later that day I checked the Web Archive again and it was gone? Someone eventually sent me a reupload from some obscure website I've never heard of so it's all good now. So yeah that's my story
@@Boooo It was just a 15 seconds long Oneyplays meme with a midi version of Rock The House by Gorillaz playing in the background. It's not really funny if you don't know about the channel
See, the thing about saving every media that is interesting to you is you risk becoming like that lady who saved literally decades of vhs recordings of multiple television channels to the point it would not only be impossible to watch them all, the hoarding literally pushed her out of her house. I forget if by the time the Hoarders show got to her she was living in a corner of her kitchen, still adding to the ‘collection,’ or if she had moved into either a shed or trailer next to her full house. (Though I did think it was a shame they didn’t offer them to some sort of archivist, y’know, just in case.) Though at least now I can just use thumb drives to save stuff and not have stacks of cds cluttering my shelves.
You know what sucks about lost media locked behind a password? Be it fan made or official? There's a high chance it can't be recovered because it was probably tied to either a video or a website or in the case of 3D fan models, originally was free to use on common Japanese websites like NicoNico but eventually became impossible to use due to either needing a password or even a password *plus* money to access. Touhou, despite what many think, is still a *very* small and niche series that has a *very* dedicated fanbase. 'Cause when new characters get revealed you can bet the fans are going to make a 3D model of those characters and there's going to be *tons* of fanart for said characters. Lucille made three models for the Touhou community, one of Marisa Kirisame (which is *very* recognizable and well known thanks to the semi-fingerless gloves on Marisa's hands), one of Patchouli Knowledge and one of Hong Meiling. Both Marisa and Patchouli have been found and archived (and I also have the .zip files for both models) which also includes an earlier version of their Patchouli model (which I also have the .zip file for) but even to this day no-one has found Lucille's Meiling model. Unfortunately at some point Lucille went and put their Twitter profile into protected mode which means no-one can view how they've been and what they've been doing. Lucille's Marisa model was made back in November 28th, 2009. Patchouli's model was first made in June 9th, 2009 but then was deleted and remade in August 23rd, 2011, AND FOR GOOD REASON. The original model is *very* unnerving to look at compared to the remade model having a face that looks like it came from LSD Dream Emulator while the rest of the model looked *very* basic. Unfortunately we don't know *anything* about Lucille's Meiling model, there's a high chance it was made the same year as the other two models as the first known image of Lucille's Meiling model is on their old Pixiv account has an image upload on July 2, 2009 at 12:32 PM. There's also an image of the model itself included with the files for Marisa's model, but until we can get the model itself (as well as any other models they've made.) the collection of models they've made for MMD is pretty much incomplete unless stated otherwise.
There's quite a few MMD models that could be considered "lost media" nowadays, bc a bunch of dumb kids just had to edit models that had specific rules against editing.
@@auqustfire Well there's that and the original creators either putting a password or a paywall in front of their models. Passwords are easy to obtain, they're either in the NicoNico video description featuring the model itself or in the url of the page the model is hosted one. But getting the necessary funds to pay to use a model is a real pain in the butt for folks outside of Japan. Either way, unless someone has the models already and is willing to give them, it's near impossible to obtain models from the original creators that are either gone for good or locked behind a password that isn't easy to find anymore. I guess the same could also be said for fanart given that unless there's an archive on sites like Danbooru or Gelbooru or even Archive.org's image archive or someone has it downloaded there's a high chance it's been wiped from the face of the Earth.
@@justsomesimplenuclearbirbs4313 I've also encountered a lot of models locked behind groups you need to join in order to get the passwords. Most of them either have a member limit or requires you to fit a certain criteria. I see this happen a lot in smaller fanbases, and it pains me to know those models will eventually be lost to time as people lose interest in the source material.
Unfortunately a lot of lost media is lost again due to copyright, understandable, but at the same time, if you're not going to make it available to everyone through some means, be it paywalled, or on a physical release, or whatever... why bother? There are so many shows and movies that are coming out now and have been out for some time (Phineas and Ferb being the example I'm mad at Disney for, for never releasing the full series on a non digital format) that are digital only. Not everything is popular either, so it really does depend on the magnitude of how far something spreads. There's a bunch of Flash stuff that is lost as well. Unfortunately.
Seeing you talk about "Phineas and Ferb" just then. I'd like to say that I remember back between 2008-2011 when I was able to watch full episodes of the show here on TH-cam for free (as uploaded by other fans), until after the movie had aired, which at that point was when the episodes wound up being taken off, due to copyright claims by Disney.
This reminds me of that time where I spent a long time to find a song. But with TH-cams new system, it just deleted videos that I was unable to watch and I can't see what it was. So now I'm not sure what songs I lost again in my quest to find songs from my childhood. There's still around 3 or 4 that I know of that I'm still looking for.
this but with AMVs (animated music videos) and I've lost two of my childhood amvs ive watched a lot (ironically both KND, one with Castaway with Green Day, the other was Crazy in Love) and it sucks as I doubt no one has really preserved them. One of my friends in the Ben 10 fandom is trying to preserve Ben 10 Amvs.
if you search for the videos unique ID(the string of numbers and letters after the = and before the & on the videos URL) on Google sometimes you can find what the name of the original video was, i've had success doing that in the past.
Then again it's a reminder for all of us that we keep falling victim to, taking this stuff for granted. Plus I was even going to ask, would bonus features that were only accessible on a now rare form of home recording, that being Laserdisc, count as lost media? Belonging into the category of "We know they exist, but are currently unavailable to the public." Because I was hoping someone could help preserve the bonus features that didn't get on a future Disney DVD release.
Ok so I'm starting to notice the problem here. The main issue is that people don't bother or are to lazy to download the videos and keep them incase the original goes missing, I think the mind set is "Oh someone already has that I don't need to save it, or somebody else can do it." it is an issue that is staring to happen more and more, so I implore people to please just download a piece of lost media because it is always possible that it will get taken down.
With the dating simulator game, as LSSQ said it was a rom, surely someone who downloaded it before can just share the files. Unless no-one downloaded it.
I want to find a short I saw when I was a kid in late 90's early 00's. I watched it on a channel called LOCOMOTION (I don't know if it was a channel just here in Latin America or if it was an international version of other network). That channel used to stream content mostly for young adults. There was a segment that aired mostly near midnight called LOCOTOMIA that showed short films and animations. The short I'm talking about was in "clay motion" (it reminds me now that chicken movie made in this format) and I recall it was about a society in which everyone does what they're supposed to: everyone goes to work at the same place, everyone goes shopping at the same place, etc. At some point the main character notices a window and is unable to see what's "outside". After various days of walking by that window with the rest of the people at the same time, the main character takes a peek out of that window and goes through it and ends up "outside" where there's a beautiful sight of a sky full of stars. Then he looks back at the window and sees how all the people inside goes from one side to another at the same time and at the same rhythm. The short ends here. The whole short had no dialog, only sound effects when needed, like people walking, working and being at home. I remember being a kid and thinking that some of the shorts that aired in that segment (LOCOTOMIA) used to be so long but I guess that being a kid enjoying some TV made me think they were long. I remember this short in particular because it meant so much to me at a young age to get a message like that: DARE TO GO OUTSIDE. It defined my way of thinking from there to the present day and I will carry that message with me for the rest of my life.
The comment about interational content being lost more or having less interest just made me think of an old show here in the UK on Jetix called PXG. PXG was a video game based show that acted as a sort of video game news report and reviee type of deal back in the mid 2000's. It was hosted by a Japanese guy named Kentaro and a CGI robotic girl in an anime style who's name escapes me. The show would give descriptions of the newest games that were coming out, featured reviews with scores out of 10 for games the creators had played and I vaguely remember a sort of cheat code segment where Kentaro would tell the viewer how to do certaon cheat codes in video games to help them out or just for fun. I distinctly remember this show being my first exposure to any kind of news about Kingdom Hearts 2 waaaaay back in 2005 as I was a massive fan of Kingdom Hearts 1 ad Chain of Memories. Like I can picture in my head the standard show borders around ths clips of KH2 which showed off Auron from FFX fighting Cerberus and just being super excited as a kid. Nowadays I don't think the show has had any kind of DVD release and I think Disney basically got rid of any archive footage for it after they replaced Jetix for Disney XD.
Probably the amount of media that ends up lost will be a much smaller percentage, since media preservation has grown so much compared to 50 years ago. Look at BlueMaxima's Flashpoint, they managed to grab virtually any Flash game that anyone could possibly think of before Flash's ultimate demise, and they have over 800GB of Flash games available for anyone to download and play.
The Space Channel 5 thing has a wrinkle that makes sense. Sega was actually sued by a woman named Kier Kirby, who had performed with a band called Dee-Lites who made a hit called "Groove Is In The Heart", and who claimed that the character of Ulala was based on her. Luckily, Sega won the lawsuit in 2007, probably helped by the increased popularity of anime in the United States meaning that people could find the anime art style that inspired Space Channel 5 more.
I found the entire Italian dubbed version of the Fist Of The North Star movie (the version with the uncensored scenes) on TH-cam. It was such a great find.... It got taken down for no reason. I SHOULD'VE downloaded an MP4 file of this so I can share it to the Internet Archive site.
One piece of lost media I’d be THRILLED if you found are the Christmas Calendar bumpers. Many years ago on Nicktoons Network, during the month of December, they aired bumpers each day of these animated shorts of Santa with his little elf helper. They always started the same way, Santa is sleeping and then the elf would go “Santa clause! Santa clause!” And jump on Santa’s belly to wake him up. They were really cute and me and my brother loved them. I’ve been trying to find them but no luck whatsoever!
it could even be on youtube somewhere under our noses, people upload drawn out videos of whole commerical/bumper breaks in between shows titled with what date it aired on
I just recently heard on 83 weeks podcast. That back in 96ish Sting (the wrestling legend) was filming scenes with Jim Carrey for Liar Liar that didn’t make it into the film. I wonder if any of that footage still exists. Would be cool to see
These were memorable as hell and it did take me years to wonder "wait that thing i watched was actually real?" like dude they were like fever dreams. I remember back in the early 2000s of cartoon network about a show of people that do magic tricks and then reveal how they do it in the end. it wasnt cartoon or anything, but the best i could remember was a guy who challenges people how to empty a water jug faster than the set time, and then him later revealing what you should do.
The production material going missing thing. That, but with video games, the fact that there's games that have the source code entirely lost is.. insane.. And not to mention the whole thing with video game collectors, they buy something that the people are looking at and wants preserved, and it disappears forever into someone's private collection. And it's even worse if it's something like a N64 development cartridge, because if I recall correctly, they have a habit of erasing themselves, so dumping them is even more important, it's a nightmare to think about how much data has been lost forever this way
When I saw the title, this made me think back to the Captain Carlos shorts that aired on Playhouse Disney. When blameitonjorge made his video on lost Disney media, these shorts were lost. But then a few years later, they were all found. But not long after, they disappeared.
That MTV Space Channel 5 show sounds like something that could be revamped in the modern age using the same technology that most 3D vtubers use, since technological implications were a big reason for its cancellation.
I'm so glad I came across this video and it mentioning AKA Cult Toons! I used to watch this on Analogue Satellite TV here in the UK and I'm sure it used to air on weekends but would also air during the weeknights during school holidays, but I can't confirm this as I used to only be able to watch it when I stayed over at my Grandparents and didn't have Sky or Cable at home. This pretty much was TH-cam Poop before it was ever a thing and it was amazing! My favourite clip they used to edit in was of the dude who would say "Shut up! If you wanna complain go stick your head in the toilet!" Made me chuckle my arse off everything.
I actually do remember seeing the KND posts as back then it was talked about on tumblr IIRC. Never thought of saving da pdfs. great vid btw. and yea, back in the 2000's there wasn't much thought about saving internet content as it was "just there" and would act as living in the moment.
Ok, so, In Cartoon Network PunchTime XL, Dexter has an alternate "yellow" version of himself. Black hair, yellow lab coat, and yellow lenses... that game makes some pretty DEEP cuts with it's alt costumes (One being Johnny Bravo's pilot colour pallet: Black hair/white shirt) and I always thought that one looked kinda familiar... thanks for helping me kinda see where that may have came from! x3 I wonder what other alternate costumes in that game represent some other pieces of lost media they may have had access to?
This really is a good example of why you should archive stuff. I actually have a lost media story that's about this kind of topic. You see, back in 2018, I was actually pretty good at archiving stuff. I would always download stuff on the school computer, and when the school year was over, I archived everything I downloaded onto OneDrive (Including the videos I'm about to talk about!) But there was one thing that I didn't archive correctly... Around September of 2018, I found these funny "Kirby Right Back at Ya" dubs in a TH-cam playlist. I LOVED them. I thought they were the funniest videos ever back then. Now luckily, I knew about Viacom's wrath of terror back then. So, knowing these dubs would be gone at some point, I went through the effort to archive all of them, and the rest is history. Actually, I lied because I made ONE terrible mistake when archiving them. I didn't really know about lost media at the time. So, while I did archive the dubs, my goofy ahh 💀 decided to only archive my FAVORITE dubs. Didn't even think about the other ones. Sadly, I didn't even realize this until I found out about lost media. And at that point, the dubs were LONG gone. Realizing this, I decided to upload these archived dubs to the Internet Archive. I archived the dubs on 9/25/2018 and uploaded them on 5/6/2020. You can watch them on Internet Archive by searching up my account name (NovaXS) and going to my uploads. I would put a link, but TH-cam doesn't seem to like links in comments. At this point, I didn't even remember who made them and I was hoping whoever made it would find the archives so I could credit him and hope that he reuploads all the dubs onto Internet Archive (i think it's pretty obviously how that turned out) So here I am, another 2 years later telling this story. At this point, I'm 99% sure the rest of the dubs are gone for good. I don't remember how many were available and I don't even remember who made it or when the dubs were even made. Considering how it's been 4 years since I found the dubs, I'd have to assume that even if I knew the creator, the rest of the dubs are probably on a hard drive that has been sold at some garage sale or destroyed. Not to also mention that these videos weren't very popular, most likely gaining around 500 to 1,000 views, so there's probably no other archives of the dubs. If ANYONE has any possible archives of the rest of the dubs, please let me know. Anyways that's my lost media story, sorry if it was pretty long.
Well before I'd even heard of lost media I was recording TV shows and commercials. I grew up in the days right before DVR so I learned how to use the VHS recorder. Little 6-9 year old me was scared one day they'd be gone, and boy was I right. I'd archived loads of Nick Jr's Face, including his final appearance and bumpers where Moose and Zee were introduced. My biological dad has them all now and I've been desperately trying to get my hands on them! I asked for "tapes" and he gave me a camcorder with a bunch of old family videos. Not what I was looking for but I'm still grateful. Hopefully I get them back someday, a mom messaged me about them and I was hoping to swoop in ages later with good news. 😰
I understand your pain, most of the spanish dubs whats i use to listen from vocaloid and diferent anime opening are gone already, even contact with the creators of some of this dubs its useless because they dont preserve a back up of his own work.
"Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo! It's a Jackie Potato!" I loved watching AKA Cartoon Network/Cult Toons as a kid, it was so weird how they did it, as described in this video, but I loved it and even (rather stupidly) tried re-creating it by recording clips of shows over tapes of other shows at least once (only one clip, I wasn't going to outright affect the entire show - I wasn't that stupid.) I actually remember a few recurring things they did, like the "What that dude say?" and that picture of a dog being shown to dramatic music (no idea if RebelTaxi covered any of that, I haven't seen his video yet.) I had no idea that Jackie P (the "P" apparently standing for "Potato") was a redesigned Dexter back in the day.
A few years ago I tried finding a commercial that aired on TV about a video game rental service IIRC, I remember it distinctly started with Sonic the Hedgehog 1 running into spikes while a pitched-up version of "Stayin' Alive" played, them zoomed back to other video game death screens or characters getting hurt in gameplay. I found it once when appealing to a Facebook group, someone linked it from a site off of TH-cam. Unfortunately the group was lost and so was my link for the commercial. I wish I had more details for it again.
One piece of lost media that was briefly uncovered that I'd love to see again: You may have heard of an urban legend about "Well to Hell". Supposedly, a Soviet research team drilled far deeper through Earth's crust than anyone had ever done, and lowered a microphone down the hole. They captured some screams of the damned. (It vaguely references a real experiment, the Kola Superdeep Borehole. Real thing, though they never recorded anything of this nature, of course.) This tall tale was popularised in some American publications. However, when people started tracking this thing down through the chain of citations, they eventually followed the trail to some really small American Christian publications which ultimately got the original story from really freaking obscure Finnish Christian and New Age publications. And at some point, someone produced an actual scan of the first known instance of the story! ...hosted in a university student's web page in a "temporary" folder. And nobody bothered to make a copy, dammit. Well, hopefully those newsletters still sit in some library somewhere, but someone needs to repeat a whole bunch of legwork.
The premise of this video kinda reminds me of how I recently found out about a lost dub for Sgt. Frog by Animax (titled "Sergeant Keroro"). From what I've seen, the entire third season of that dub was apparently released online back in 2019 before being taken down, and only several episodes of it were archived and uploaded to The Internet Archive. I even saw a Reddit post from 2020 that mentioned there were episodes "104 onwards", implying episode 104, which isn't on The Internet Archive, existed online at some point, as well as probably episodes following after it. Basically, it was found, and then lost again, and only a few of them managed to survive.
@@ccbred yeah, i've got 21 episodes, which i think were all of them that were available on dailymotion? not entirely sure the best way to reupload them though
The Ulala concept could work with modern tech. Vtubers are more or less that concept in execution, so it would be nice to see a revival of it. What can I say, I like Ulala and Space Channel Five. p.s. It is odd to hear someone say dating simulator in such a scholarly tone.
This indicates that we should upload almost everything we find in Lost media to the internet archive and Wayback machine as soon as possible. We obviously can't do this with physical media so we'll have to find an alternative for that.
Tons of people look for this lost media stuff and the day they find it posted online instead of making back ups and uploading those to the Archive, they're just comfortable with leaving the media sitting where they found it :/
The idea of silent movies being lost makes me so sad. My dad and I used to watch a bunch of Keaton, Lloyd, and Arbuckle films so I have a lot of nostalgia for them. It’s weird in a sense to watch something from 100 years ago, before the Depression, before WWII… so much history.
Moral of the Story: Always back shit up, I know the whole mindset of "Well we found it, case closed!" is very tempting but please for the love of god have a saved copy of something somewhere.
Dude I instantly recognized the thumbnail image from Rebeltaxi. But man having lost media found and then disappearing again sucks. All that hard work gone. But I remember from one of your livestreams from years ago that you mentioned how Captain Carlos experienced a similar fate.
I’ll never understand why companies like Viacom do this. They don’t make any money off of it anyways, and you’re just souring your image with the general public. It seems like there’s nothing to be gained other than hate from former fans
i remember a few songs i really loved from a small artist that i found uploaded on youtube and listened to all the time. i even put the videos in playlists. the artist copyright claimed every single one of these videos a while back, and these specific songs were never uploaded anywhere else. the artist never put these songs on their spotify or bandicamp either. all of these songs are gone now, and my playlists dont feel the same without it. RIP girls just wanna have fun and santa baby- covers by bulldog eyes. i really miss those songs. if i ever see em again, theyre getting downloaded and put on my 5 flash drives. maybe someday theyll reappear..
Apparently _AKA Cult Toons_ also has some non-Hanna-Barbera animated show clips. I saw a couple of frames from _Freakazoid_ and _Foghorn Leghorn_ thrown in there in this video.
There is actually a piece of media I consider lost that I've been unable to find in my unprofessional searches. There is a song called Quite Spectacular by the musician Hint, and there used to be a music video for it on youtube I believe uploaded by Hint itself. It was almost like an animatic or slideshow drawn in traditional media (colored pencils and the like) starring a knight that tries to save his village from a dragon, but ends up messing it up. I have no idea why he took it down but I've been unable to find the video since. I know the second it is found, if it is, im going to download it and never let it go.
Company: We won't preserve our old media, because it doesn't make us money and we don't care about it Fans: Ok, we will preserve it Company: DON'T YOU DARE, IT'S MINE!!
Man, Paramount throwing that film away hurts. I get why they did it; nitrate film had a tendency to burst into flame once it started to decompose, but, still, it HURTS.
i remember seeing a gif/video of the nintendo slamfest 99 in some youtube video but i cant find it anymore, pretty sure the channel was thomas game docs or something similar and no it was not the smash bros ad it was a legit clip ftom the slamfest
I have had a similar thing happen to me personally. So I am a big fan of Allison Pregler and her Movie Nights series of reviews. I am also a fan of Brad Jones's Cinema Snob and Midnight Screenings reviews (despite the kind of jerk Bradakin is). Back when the two were still on good terms, they did a bunch of videos together, along with Allison's boyfriend (now husband) Phelan, on both their channels. After their falling out, they either deleted or private the videos containing the other, so all my favorite Movie Nights and Midnight Screenings videos are gone. A few months back, I found a TH-cam channel called TH-cam Lost and Found had uploaded nearly every episode of Movie Nights that had Brad, along with other videos that had been lost on TH-cam. I was happy and hoped the rest of my favorites would be uploaded in time. However, within like 2 weeks, the channel was gone, due to the innumerable copyright strikes regarding the original videos. I didn't think to save any of them, so I lost them all over again. I hope that because someone had them saved once they could resurface again, but I don't know if the OG uploader or anyone else would even be willing to upload them again, at least on TH-cam. It did make me learn a valuable lesson: anything you don't wanna lose, SAVE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ON YOUR OWN DEVICES
wouldn’t you think that once lost media is found people would take more precautions in backing it up and saving it in several places to fall back too if something were to happen again.
@Digi Data I ran their website through a translator at the time, they had a post explaining that they were threatened by the Korean equivalent of a copyright lawyer over one of they games they uploaded, and they password locked the rest out of understandable fear.
The film stock used during the silent era releases highly flammable gases when it decomposes. That’s one of the reasons why so many silent films were destroyed in film vault fires. That being said, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t try to transfer this film to safety film stock or do something to try to preserve it.
I have a good piece of lost media for ya, the unique Adult Swim promo when they aired KND first episode entitled, "Adult Swim" where the kids get kicked outta the pool then come back for a giant robot battle with the life guards who are a parody reference to the bad guys in a James Bond film (lol!)
You'd think after losing it once people would be a little more careful about backing it up a second time.
That’s like almost going to jail for robbery and then robbing the same house at day time
It's also like making an OK game and then making a worse one.

@@GreenBunnyTNT. As an Uber driver, it is depressing how easily I can envision that.
it's a matter of just not having enough space to store everything on a PC usually.
Ouch that sucks.
Maybe someone seeing the TV listing saying it'll be aired spurred them to Google it snd they saw it was lost - or an article came out saying it'll be aired and is considered lost? Or it could just be a weird coincidence
hows the original uploader doing?

Exactly
problem is not everyone has enough space on their PC to do that.
People say stuff like "once on the internet, it's always on the internet" and that's why they get confident once a piece of lost media surfaces.
Lost media in itself completely kills that quote too lol.

I feel like Ulala's swinging report show could come back nowadays as like a Vtuber show tbh, it wouldn't be as hard as doing a full mocap/animation rig, and things could be gotten out in a timely fashion
so in a way it was too ahead of it's time
It’s kinda amazing.

viacom are like that, if they find something they can copystrike, they will, no mater how obscure or irrelevant it is
Viacom is the ultimate enemy of TH-cam. They were the first to send out a massive lawsuit to the site back in the late 2000s which we can probably attribute to TH-cam's paranoia around Copyright strikes snowballing into their horrible practices these days.

It was true for years everything online stays forever I found out year ago that was a myth
But is it SAFE to download? Especially if it’s youtube😅
@@gracekim1998 yes? why wouldn't it be safe.

This makes me wonder on how many lost media movies, shows, etc were unfortunately lost in this matter, and how we can be more careful when it's lost media related
Too many. WE NEED MORE HARD DRIVES!
Of the silent era we have maybe like 10-20% of them (if that)
Thats not surprising. just look at the BBCs treatment of star trek and doctor who episodes. Let alone movies from the 30s

Like the CPS2 version of Witch's theme from Puyo Puyo.

This is the reason to always mirror content on multiple sites; if one archive goes down, there are still back-ups that can be relied on.

That's a real shame
There was a silly TH-cam video I used to watch back in 2017 that the uploader has now privated. I looked it up far and wide online until I found a link to it. I put that link on the Wayback Machine and thought "ok, it's 6 am now, I'm going to sleep and I'll upload it to TH-cam when I wake up. But then later that day I checked the Web Archive again and it was gone? Someone eventually sent me a reupload from some obscure website I've never heard of so it's all good now. So yeah that's my story
Whats the video?
Yeah I want to see you too I'm trying myself to laugh so hard
(Though I did think it was a shame they didn’t offer them to some sort of archivist, y’know, just in case.)
Though at least now I can just use thumb drives to save stuff and not have stacks of cds cluttering my shelves.
People uploading whole ass movies in 4k to TH-cam without any punishment - I sleep
Someone uploaded a extremely obscure clip from 2001- REAL SHIT
There's also an image of the model itself included with the files for Marisa's model, but until we can get the model itself (as well as any other models they've made.) the collection of models they've made for MMD is pretty much incomplete unless stated otherwise.
oh ok
@@Porygonal64 Did you bring a light?
Just goes to show that the phrase "anything you put on the internet is there forever" isn't quite true, unfortunately
The best way to ensure something stays on the internet is to try to keep it off the internet
I listen to a lot of idm music and so much of it is unarchived. It's super sad
if you search for the videos unique ID(the string of numbers and letters after the = and before the & on the videos URL) on Google sometimes you can find what the name of the original video was, i've had success doing that in the past.
@@jadedheartsz I don't know how to do that because I'm not sure what songs I'm looking for again
@@LocalTorchwoodIntern I actually recently found one of my favorite amvs from my childhood, it's a TMNT one
I'm glad you made a video about this, because I've noticed it happen a lot over the years and it's very frustrating.
It’s always a great day when LSonicQ uploads a new video!
This makes me wonder what media now would be lost in the future because no one thought to preserve it
Probably the amount of media that ends up lost will be a much smaller percentage, since media preservation has grown so much compared to 50 years ago.
Luckily, Sega won the lawsuit in 2007, probably helped by the increased popularity of anime in the United States meaning that people could find the anime art style that inspired Space Channel 5 more.
that song is iconic lmao
Crazy how you’re own cringe shit from 5 years ago is still online but big projects from major company just vanish after being seen by millions
I’ve been trying to find them but no luck whatsoever!
hope it gets found
Ads and bumbers are even rarwr than shows/movies. Sadly i dont think thats ever gonna be found.
it could even be on youtube somewhere under our noses, people upload drawn out videos of whole commerical/bumper breaks in between shows titled with what date it aired on
I just recently heard on 83 weeks podcast.
The fact that Cartoon Network made a black Dexter recolor is kinda weird to think about.
They blackwashed Dexter.
@@mr_indie_fan I thought the same thing.
Anyone has the black dexter timestamp?

You'd think that being able to animate Ulala quickly wouldn't be a problem, considering that they could reuse her walk cycle and lip movements.
Remember to always download your favorite TH-cam videos, kids.
Damn, that's a good detail!
At this point, I didn't even remember who made them and I was hoping whoever made it would find the archives so I could credit him and hope that he reuploads all the dubs onto Internet Archive (i think it's pretty obviously how that turned out)
So here I am, another 2 years later telling this story.
It's a Jackie Potato!"
I loved watching AKA Cartoon Network/Cult Toons as a kid, it was so weird how they did it, as described in this video, but I loved it and even (rather stupidly) tried re-creating it by recording clips of shows over tapes of other shows at least once (only one clip, I wasn't going to outright affect the entire show - I wasn't that stupid.) I actually remember a few recurring things they did, like the "What that dude say?" and that picture of a dog being shown to dramatic music (no idea if RebelTaxi covered any of that, I haven't seen his video yet.) I had no idea that Jackie P (the "P" apparently standing for "Potato") was a redesigned Dexter back in the day.
One piece of lost media that was briefly uncovered that I'd love to see again:
You may have heard of an urban legend about "Well to Hell". Supposedly, a Soviet research team drilled far deeper through Earth's crust than anyone had ever done, and lowered a microphone down the hole. They captured some screams of the damned.
(It vaguely references a real experiment, the Kola Superdeep Borehole. Real thing, though they never recorded anything of this nature, of course.)
This tall tale was popularised in some American publications.
It was deceased many years ago on Coast to Coast AM radio show. Not sure but I think they had the original audio
Basically, it was found, and then lost again, and only a few of them managed to survive.
wow i might actually be able to help with a lost media search for once. i downloaded all of those AKA Cult Toons uploads when they were on dailymotion
woah really?
@@ccbred yeah, i've got 21 episodes, which i think were all of them that were available on dailymotion? not entirely sure the best way to reupload them though
@Mister Metokur here's a screenshot of the episodes i have i.imgur.com/EC02ac9.png
I would try uploading to the internet archive
The title made chuckle as it sounds completely counterintuitive to the whole concept of lost media hunting
The idea that people were making TH-cam Poop before TH-cam makes me so happy 😊
The Ulala concept could work with modern tech. Vtubers are more or less that concept in execution, so it would be nice to see a revival of it. What can I say, I like Ulala and Space Channel Five.
p.s. It is odd to hear someone say dating simulator in such a scholarly tone.
This indicates that we should upload almost everything we find in Lost media to the internet archive and Wayback machine as soon as possible. We obviously can't do this with physical media so we'll have to find an alternative for that.
"Paramount would discard any film which showed any degree of composition."
& yet they renewed Picard for a 3rd season.
Ulala was just too ahead of her time. In the era of vtubers and virtual idols, she could really thrive.
RIP girls just wanna have fun and santa baby- covers by bulldog eyes. i really miss those songs. if i ever see em again, theyre getting downloaded and put on my 5 flash drives. maybe someday theyll reappear..
you did you rip the song from the internet even it was lost?
Apparently _AKA Cult Toons_ also has some non-Hanna-Barbera animated show clips. I saw a couple of frames from _Freakazoid_ and _Foghorn Leghorn_ thrown in there in this video.
These are so interesting, love watching lost media!❤️ Half of these were definitely before I was born.
Fuck yes, I've been binging these for a week. Perfect timing!
The city gone wild one pisses me off. Having your work destroyed without even having a say in it is the worst especially when it’s one of a kind.
Me everytime I look for some shit in my room, find it, put it somewhere "safe" and then promptly forget where I put it
There is actually a piece of media I consider lost that I've been unable to find in my unprofessional searches.
Company: We won't preserve our old media, because it doesn't make us money and we don't care about it
Fans: Ok, we will preserve it
Company: DON'T YOU DARE, IT'S MINE!!
It seems very worthless how they copyright claim any media that cannot be found easily
That occurrence is just depressing
Ironic a community dedicated to preserving media sometimes let's things get lost again
Man, Paramount throwing that film away hurts. I get why they did it; nitrate film had a tendency to burst into flame once it started to decompose, but, still, it HURTS.
I love your videos, keep them up!
It feels so weird that lost media can be lost again. It feels like when Scrat from ice age finally has the nut but then he loses it again.
i remember seeing a gif/video of the nintendo slamfest 99 in some youtube video but i cant find it anymore, pretty sure the channel was thomas game docs or something similar
and no it was not the smash bros ad it was a legit clip ftom the slamfest
If those Channel Awesome guys want something off of TH-cam, they're pretty damn militant about it. See: Lindsay Ellis' infamous rape rap video
wouldn’t you think that once lost media is found people would take more precautions in backing it up and saving it in several places to fall back too if something were to happen again.
I saw the entire thing with College Terra Story. It was both fascinating and low-key frustrating lol.
@Digi Data Probably personal reasons.
@Mister Metokur That's good to know, hopefully they can get the game archived again.
I never played the game or saw the show, but I'd like Space Channel 5 to be brought back. It sounds so weird that it just might work
I have a good piece of lost media for ya, the unique Adult Swim promo when they aired KND first episode entitled, "Adult Swim" where the kids get kicked outta the pool then come back for a giant robot battle with the life guards who are a parody reference to the bad guys in a James Bond film (lol!)
