These people make all the noise on social media for their achievement of reaching summit of Mount Everest. No one can reach summit without these brave sherpas. We literally ride on their back. Salute to these brave hearts.

Uh, not everybody can go/qualify. It takes more than just big bucks. Fitness assessments/past experience is reviewed by the vendors. Period. As for falling in a crevasse, it can happen to any of us. It never did for me on Rainier/2008 climbing season, but better to be lucky than good. I was. It's EXTREMELY difficult fording any crevasse atop a ladder w/ crampons: Metal on Metal. The middle flexes, held together w/ bungee cords. It's always "attention getting". And the guy you tie off to/anchor....is always nervous. And should be.
The Sherpa's are absolute legends. Thanks to them so many people have realised their dreams, instances like this help you understand just how heroic and superhuman these people are. This is also why I respect Nims when he says they are not given enough credit.

Must be nice having an entire team of expert Sherpas there to bail you out. Ironic that thrill-seeking foreigners who seek to "conquer" Mt. Everest rely so heavily on those incredibly hard-working, dedicated people to do the bulk of both the technical work like scouting, setting lines, testing equipment as well as the grunt work like supplying the oxygen, food, cooking the meals... My deepest respect go toward those brave, hard-working people. They are the most resilient babysitters in the entire world.
Everyone who climbs Everest should be tipping the Sherpas 4 figures. They're paying well into 5 figures to climb Everest, they can dish out another couple grand.
@@travis5665 Um- you must never have climbed anything. First of all, bridging crevasses means CARRYING the bridges up the icefall. At 20,000 plus feet. Second of all, crampons HAVE to be on your boots to walk on the ice at all. Thirdly, There is NO smooth surface you can walk on, with crampons, that the steel points won’t either slide on, or stick into, either of which is hugely dangerous and can result in falls. The rungs of the ladders allow the teeth of the crampons to STRADDLE them, so that the boot can NOT slide forward or backwards, and the side rails of the ladder prevent the boot from sliding sideways off the ladder. I know it LOOKS weird... but aluminum ladders are actually the single most secure way to cross a crevasse wearing crampons. Yes it takes concentration and care- but that’s a GOOD thing when crossing a crevasse by any means. And as you can see, those crossing are roped to help keep them from losing their balance, and, if necessary, prevent them from falling down the crevasse. The entire reason you even have ropes in climbing is because slips and falls are GOING to happen climbing a mountain covered in slippery ice and nearly as slippery naked rock.
Don't worry, there is also real mountaineers in the Alps and we have this type of clients too ! But don't blame them, mountain guides from every where need clients to live ;-)
@@kevindevilliers3572 No. Sherpas are there for tourists. Many non tourists do not need the ropes or they use their own rope on a non tourist route. Sure they still take porters - even high altitude porters, but they do all the climbing themselves. New routes are mostly done by foreigners - you do not see too many Sherpa laid routes. There is entirely too much credit given to Sherpa - they are good even excellent mountaineers but they are no better then mountaineers from all over the world.
After he gets up there’s such a relief in the air it’s incredible, and the thank yous at the end from the man in blue made me emotional. These people are truly amazing

You have absolutely no idea the bond people build with these men!! I've heard stories of family like relationships being built because of this. In such a poor country a lot of support is sent and given by people after the fact. This job is what keeps the families fed. Referring to them as "my Sherpa" is no different than calling someone's my teacher.
A stunning rescue by the sherpas, plus huge credit to the climber for staying calm and taking instructions. The sherpas didn't want him to lose consciousness by being suspended upside down otherwise the rescue would have been twice as hard.

Most places in the world where there are small communities, they are full of good people, excluding some parts of the middle east. Even then, they are good people, it's just that their religion is medieval and requires them to do things we would find morally repugnant. Probably a dentist. Or a stocks trader. He'll have stories to tell at the end about how he fell into a cravass but ultimately climbed the mountain...here's the slide show, that's me standing on top of the world. It was amazing and only cost $100,000...you should do it!

Everyone's talking about how calm the sherpas were but I think the best example of calmness is the person dangling in to the bottomless pit not making a sound... they bossed it 👊
Sherpas deserve to be paid way more n gvn insurance etc this is highly specialised work on mt everest they risk their lives every minute n they work in teams n pairs so they can assist each other. Ice fall doctors they call thm .
Totally terrifying, hanging upside down over a crevasse! NOT a time to panic! I guess those ropes or cables or whatever, are quite strong, and the sherpas just go about their job like they've saved someone from falling head-first down a crevasse a hundred times! Maybe they have! Much awe and respect to them!
14 Peaks on Netflix shows a lot of what these men are capable of. 6 world records in one year. The people from Nepal and the sherpas on Mt Everest are the best mountaineers of the planet.
sherpas are the best. they are very soulful. they risk their life for others, no matter how tough situations are. they are always there for you. as they says, "guest are god". some says, "we are here because they are there" (JAI NEPAL, JAI SHERPA.)
Guy falls on the edge of death and the Sherpas are like "Its fiiine my dude, just hang out for a minute and we'll rescue you from a painful and terrifying demise." Legendary.
Finally a mountaineering rescue storyline i can really be happy about.... Why do i get MORE satisfaction at these guys being rescued rather than the countless others who have got into trouble there ; now let me see?
The sherpas are wonderful. They dedicate their lives to that mountain and many of them have died over the years.if it wasn't for them looking after the climbers there would be thousands more bodies up there

🏔️OH MY GOD!!!! Sherpa casually says “are you ok man? Relax don’t move!” as if it’s your typical day to day thing😅 1:00 then proceeds to sit on top of the ladder!!! Not a problem 😮 The calmness & skills of the Sherpa’s is beyond words….
I get it that his crampon got stuck, you can see that from the footage. You fall FORWARD, onto the ladder, you do not outstretch your body to try and grab at a piece of hard snow you can't grip into. I am sure this guy has mountaineering experience but clearly not technical ice-climbing experience with crampons. Crevasses kill a lot of people because of simple mistakes, but if you find yourself crossing one and you're going to trip, trip forward and take the hit. You should be fine and it is much easier to help someone still on a ladder than counter-repel them up. Also that mountain is telling you that you do not belong there. Mountains talk baby, call me crazy.
Yep, that would have been my sign to just stay at base camp. If you’re having trouble going through the icefall (I assume that’s where this was), that’s not a good sign.

kudos to the nepalis (guides and porters) who make these high-altitude adventures as safe as possible. without their knowledge, commitment, skills and strength, one wouldn't dare to approach these mountains... remember april 2014 tragedy, when 16 (sxiteen!) sherpas died in an avalanche close to everest camp 1, while preparing the way for their clients. homage to those who are gone and namaste to those who continue to put their lives at risk supporting their clients.
The sherpas have skills that can be transferred to urban towns, cities, like firefighting, fire/flood rescue missions ! I just hope they are paid as much as their city counterparts!

They do their home work. Their percentage is less though
It's very clear it is not hospital to people. I don't understand why people put themselves through such bad conditions. Other people will be the ones to pick up the pieces. The top of Everest is the equivalent of the cruising altitude of an Airbus plane. Not for people.

The particular crevasse isn't even that deep. I've fallen into more dangerous ones and survived fine.
The amount of people on that mountain that have no business being there is truly shocking.
People that want to climb that mountain are half baked to start with.

A stunning rescue by the sherpas, plus huge credit to the climber for staying calm and taking instructions. The sherpas didn't want him to lose consciousness by being suspended upside down otherwise the rescue would have been twice as hard.
The climber is simply a guy that paid for the ride. He deserves no credit other than for paying them.

It is like giving passengers credit for a pilot bringing down a damaged airplane. The passengers have nothing to do with anything other than being along for the ride. Most places in the world where there are small communities, they are full of good people, excluding some parts of the middle east. Even then, they are good people, it's just that their religion is medieval and requires them to do things we would find morally repugnant. Most Jewish, Christian, and Budhist areas the people are amazing.

He had to conserve his oxygen. He was upside down so not able to breath right. Screaming would have just wasted his air.

Totally terrifying, hanging upside down over a crevasse! NOT a time to panic! I guess those ropes or cables or whatever, are quite strong, and the sherpas just go about their job like they've saved someone from falling head-first down a crevasse a hundred times! Maybe they have! Much awe and respect to them!

I get it that his crampon got stuck, you can see that from the footage. You fall FORWARD, onto the ladder, you do not outstretch your body to try and grab at a piece of hard snow you can't grip into. I am sure this guy has mountaineering experience but clearly not technical ice-climbing experience with crampons. Crevasses kill a lot of people because of simple mistakes, but if you find yourself crossing one and you're going to trip, trip forward and take the hit. You should be fine and it is much easier to help someone still on a ladder than counter-repel them up.
Also that mountain is telling you that you do not belong there. Mountains talk baby, call me crazy.
When you fall, remember to fall forward, got it.
Yep, that would have been my sign to just stay at base camp. If you’re having trouble going through the icefall (I assume that’s where this was), that’s not a good sign.

kudos to the nepalis (guides and porters) who make these high-altitude adventures as safe as possible. without their knowledge, commitment, skills and strength, one wouldn't dare to approach these mountains... remember april 2014 tragedy, when 16 (sxiteen!) sherpas died in an avalanche close to everest camp 1, while preparing the way for their clients. homage to those who are gone and namaste to those who continue to put their lives at risk supporting their clients.

It's very clear it is not hospital to people. I don't understand why people put themselves through such bad conditions. Other people will be the ones to pick up the pieces. The top of Everest is the equivalent of the cruising altitude of an Airbus plane. Not for people.
