    When you generate thumbnails like this, do you study shapes and designs popularized by the 70's before starting and attempt to work those into the initial values? Or do you only try to find the pleasing shapes first, and tweak them to look like the designs your going for?

      Yes, but don't get too deep into this part yet. Take only a few references to start off with your concept and try to focus on shapes, gestures and values overall. The costumes is also important in this part but details not at all, only the characters details that could make it recognizable at first sight. Hope that helps

      Absolutely, it helps a lot. It's easy to forget that the whole process is specifically used to make striking and recognizable designs. It's dangerously easy to get caught up in trying to render when I try to do my silhouettes.
