This man...explained every reason why my plants used to die. I used to use half miracle grow half compost...as you can imagine half my plants grew poorly and the other half straight up died. And my solution, of course, was to water more. Then I realized it formed a sludge and switched myself thinking well how can I reasonably expect a plant to grow in sludge so I used coco coir, vermiculite and worm castings before switching to just coco and vermiculite. No plant died so I was ok. Then I saw Gary's videos and EVERYTHING was explained. Could have saved my 🥭 and several citrus including a ponderosa lemon I was so excited for. No root rot issues now tho despite watering fairly frequently in the summer.
I've learned soooooooooo much from the both of you gentlemen over the last couple of years 😊
Charles, I've been searching for this info! I bought 2 citrus trees about 1 month ago and have been researching to find the best soil mix for them. I purchased Kellogg citrus mix at Home Depot and after reading reviews, it went back! 1 week ago I ordered Espoma Organic potting mix and was not too convinced I wanted to even open the bags because of so many people finding gnats, mold & mushrooms in their brand new soil. So yes, those will also go back. Tomorrow I am taking a drive to Gary's in Santa Ana!🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

I’m absolutely a disciple of Gary. I go during slow times, with my notebook, and ask him a million questions. He. Knows. EVERYTHING. Do NOT mix in compost into your soil. Keep it on top. He’s seriously a genius. I will buy plants and soil only from Laguna Hills Nursery. Definitely sign up for his email newsletter. It’s unbelievable. Read the email archives too.
Yeah, mixing compost into your soil ties up nitrogen until the bacteria, fungi, worms, etc. break it down. I don't think it hurts to lightly rake it in an inch or so, but turning your beds with the stuff seems like a waste of time and effort.

Thank you Charles for this great video about soils! This is exactly what I was looking for as I've been driving from nursery to nursery here in Oregon looking for the perfect soil. I'm planning on planting my first citrus trees this spring! :) I'll be growing in containers. I'm thinking of making my own mix with 30% peat moss and the the remaining 70% will be a blend of loam, sand, pumice, compost and charcoal. Thanks again for sharing this knowledge and helping us all with your gardening tips!

I just setup 7 dragon fruit trellis 25gl pots all using Garys top pot. I use his acid mix for my bluberry busshes in 15gl containers

This actually makes a lot of sense while having my mind blown at the same time. I’ve had a mandevilla Laxa (Chilean Jasmine) in a container of “dead trees” for about a year and it almost died. Literally as soon as I put it in my Florida sandy soil it began pumping out leaves.

It's strange that I've never heard Gary say anything about vermiculite. My understanding is that vermiculite is very good at holding nutrients until the plant is ready to use them.

Hi, are expandable clay pebbles as good a substitute to pumice? The fired clay pebbles are claimed to be lightweight with exellent drainage and moisutre retention.
Funny, I have been trending to less organic matter in my own potting mixes, taking clues from bonsai culture and my own observations. I use a lot of pumice in my own mixes.
My new soil is very sandy. What do I need to add to it to make it more like Gary’s..? Thank you Charles for this awesome video. This explains so much of why lots of plants don’t make it in pots

Great to hear from you! :-) The best thing to do to improve your sandy soil is MULCH. Add a 2-4 inch layer of mulch around all of your plants & trees each year. That will help improve the quality, texture and value of the soil for those plants & trees. Some growers in Florida would add clay to their sandy soil to get closer to "ideal" soils for their crops & orchards.... But that can be too costly.... Mulch will help the soil in so many ways.... I have a video (with Dave Wilson Nursery) that I will publish next week talking about the 4 benefits of mulch for your fruits and veggies! Keep in touch! Charles :-)

Smacking myself in the forehead... I've thought about this exact topic constantly while installing my food forest. So... Top dress with compost but don't plant into it. Sounds easier than tilling it in- I'll take it! I in FL, would rock dust be a good addition to my sand then? In what ways can I ammend the sand to have this longer lasting effect?

I do favor potting media over potting soil, when and where possible. I have my cacti/succulents growing in almost pure pumice, without root loss. My only question would be: if the dirt we find in our gardens is between 1-5% organic material... the rest being crushed/ground rock of various particulate size, then how can soil ph around the earth be so drastically different? Would it be because of different mineral compounds and gasses trapped within the layers of inorganic media? At 1-5%, it wouldn’t seem likely that organic matter would be enough to influence soil ph.

Can I use this soil in SC? where we have a soil better suited to make pots than growing things, so much clay. and we receive a large amount of rain during the growing season , spring, summer through fall.
It’s any wonder I have fungus gnats in my potting soil inside my home. It’s due to the potting mixes. The fungus gnats thrive in that crap. Great video, thanks 👍

Charles/Gary so what would be your recommendation with trees that have been planted in 50% native soil and 50% compost? I just started working on my back yard this April and have planted 15 trees with 50/50 recipe recommended by my nursery. All trees planted are tropicals(guava,mango, avocado,surinam cherry, strawberry tree,)just to name a few. I'm in Phoenix and these trees are doing okay since they all have filtered shade after about 11am, but Gary has mentioned on some of his videos that you might not see the affects of the bad soil until 2 to 3 years later. Thanks in advance for any help.
You're welcome MrLuis480! It is a good practice to re-pot your potted plants every 3-5 years, even if they are repotted into the same container by pruning some roots (be sure to prune back some of the branches to balance the stress from the pruned roots), and improve the soil conditions below and around the sides of the planting. The best time to repot your plants would be later winter, after all chance of frost has past, and before spring growth. Please keep me posted on your container orchard! Charles :-)

So charles... i came across a lot of ur videos. Thanks for all ur effort. I love the iv organic product i bought from HD. But this video confused me a lot. I followed all ur past videos tips etc and had added mulch into the plant hole as i have clay soil. I live in san jose, ca. So what do i do now? As all the plant holes i dug have 50% mulch.

I am connected to several organizations and always seek to learn and share my knowledge.... The videos from the past, are the past... and based on past knowledge that was common in the gardening industry. You've heard it hear first... hence the purpose of this publication... But you will notice on all future planting lessons going forward, I will be using very little to no organic matter into the holes... but rather focused on improving the topsoil with compost & mulch. There will be several lessons published that tie this video into it in the upcoming weeks and months. In fact, I will be talking about the history that has evolved from the past to present regarding tree planting and what will soon be the predominant trend... As introduced with this video. Hi Ariel,
No you don't need to remove the leaves or bark. The leaves and bark. on top are slowly decomposing from the elements (Sun, Water and organisms) that break down the organic material which leaches into the soil and becomes fertilizer. Naturally!

What is a good substitution for pumice. Where am from is really hard to get.
Tepjol maybe? Ideally you want some rock that can retain some moisture and are not too heavy. Black lava rock could probably be used if you get it in a small size or crush it up to smaller pieces.
i would have presumed that in an optimaly thriving rich forest there would be metres of organic matter on top of the soil..

"Top of the soil" is the key phrase! The rest of the organic matter below the ground is the earthworms, bacteria, fungus, some organic matter that is released off the roots, dead roots, etc.... But the average organic matter [according to the 2 experts, Gary Matsuoka & Peter Severynen) should be between 0.9 and 5% (on the high end). Hoping this growing season is your best! is it just me.. or does 5 percent organic matter in a potting mix sound like not enough food to you? lol
@@veganchiefwarrior6444 plants don't eat organic matter(for the most part) they take in nutrients and water. Fungus eats organic matter and breaks it down into stuff plants can take in. Not all fungus is good, but that is how it works.

Call Laguna Hills nursery they can help you out, I bought 10 bags earlier this year to swap out my Citrus saplings, he definitely gave me a discount buying 10 bags like 10% off or something. Top Pot, It’s around 13 bucks a bag I think

when Gary mentioned charcoal did he actually mean biochar?
I would say yes. Aquarium filters call it Activated charcoal. But it is not charcoal used in bbq's which is a blend of bio-char and and coal (which has sulfur) and is clearly explained on the Kingsford charcoal website.

IV Organic oh good I will watch that cos I have my poor Granny Smith apple tree in normal potting mix and potting soil which is very rich in organic matter. I hope it doesn’t die in that soil cos it’s in a very large pot as it’s a dwarf apple tree.
