    I’ve always found guides pretty cool there’s so many different ones and people have so many crazy preferences and I really don’t even know the difference between most of them other than some are single foot and some are double foot but they look cool and they make the fishing rod a fishing rod rather than a super engineered stick

    For me I like double footed steel guides because they are just heavy duty and I don’t have to worry about braid cutting through them or the inserts popping

      I remember selling rods with those guides in the 90's. I never had anyone specifically ask for those, but having a rod with them makes sense for your methods.

    I scored a 7’ one piece Berkeley lightning rod with titanium guides for $25 @ Wally World evil inc. in 2013. Still haven’t used it. Time flies

      If I remember correctly that's a pretty fast rod, not the lightest but a strong taper in the bend and good backbone. If it has the twist lock turn it lightly at first to secure the reel.

    Awesome video bro, very informative. Never paid that much attention to the guides lol just buy and if it breaks buy another rod.

      Guides are sort of a hit and miss concept. Certain guides can be a big deal for certain fishing scenarios, and in others make no real difference. Thanks for the feedback!

      Frank Racz only time I do look at them is when they have the ceramic inside, don't like those lol

    Using high profile micro guides tend to cast better than short micro guides. The problem with very short micro guides is that wet line will touch and stick to the rod blank.. Causing friction,at times, that isn't there with taller guides. I definitely agree with the trend of going to smaller ring sizes in the guides, but not going with such a short profile after the 3rd guide. These principles are why float fishing rods tend to have taller profile guides, with generally smaller than average ring size.

      Ryan S I was unaware of these subtleties on guides. Thank for commenting and sharing on my videos-much appreciated.

    Interesting video. I have on all my handmade´s Fuji Alconite and Fuji Titanium guides. Not really cheap but if I build my rods, they're usually never cheap anyway :D

      Thanks for the feedback. It's a touchy subject. Sometimes guides mean so much for some fishing, and not others.

    I tested the micro-guides as compared to "normal". All things being equal- line, lure, reel...I have not noticed that one casts further than the other.
    I have one Fenwick rod that has Alconite guides. I also have some rods with Zirconium, and I've seen a couple more types which I cannot recall at the moment. I'm not sure what the difference is other than they are chemical mixtures which produce a "ceramic". Maybe one is more "slippery" than the other, but I haven't been able to tell. What I have noticed is that some tend to crack easier than others (the alconite has endured well). Is the Alconite supposed to be at the top of the heap as far as guide inserts go? I think that is what you were saying in this video.
    Frank, I know that I have asked you this before and I'm a little embarrassed to ask again (this time I'm noting it in my phone!)
    What state do you fish?

      Guides were a big topic of discussion years ago. The Alconite is one of the top grade, but not the most expensive. For the mid-dollar rods I reference I would say it's the best option. I fish in Northwest Indiana and the Chicago suburbs.

      Frank Racz NW Indiana and Chicago...I will never ask again...lol. We aren't that far apart (metro Detroit). If you ever make your way to my area, be sure and hit me up!

      Sure thing. I worked in New Boston a couple times. Once someone there told me not to get lost in Detroit. I told them I lived next to Gary, and they understood...

      omg...yes, one of my brothers told me that if you want to see something worse than Detroit, drive through Gary. Actually, in the last decade or so, some parts of the D have gotten better, downtown for example.
      I fish sometimes in the New Boston area on the Huron River.

    Does the amount of guides effect casting??

    • @frankracz6736
      @frankracz6736  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gavin, generally more guides equates to further and more accurate casting.

  • @ryans9029

    My custom rods are all built with alconite fujis, no need to go crazy with guides. I just tell people to use a guide that will handle braid in the long run. Instead of cheaper guides that wear out with braid, as braid likes to collect sediment and silt which is extremely abrasive.

    • @frankracz6736
      @frankracz6736  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan S I agree, Alconite's are great, and also folks can really overthink guides, and not put the same level of awareness for the blank itself. If you build rods you know this already.
