the same can be said about Hildryn but you don't need a load of health to be good because shield tanking is a thing
take Mirage for example she has pretty low HP compared to a lot of the other frames but she has both damage buffing and damage reduction and with helminth you can open her up a lot more be it using Gloom to boost her survivability or using Energized Munitions to make her a better gunslinger
in short Caliban falls in with frames like Volt and Mag which rely on their shields to tank instead of being like the lazy mummy (Inaros) which relies on nothing more than his health but loads of health doesn't make you a tank and many frames prove this

    • @Darthmufin
      @Darthmufin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Because if he didn't have shields the sentient friends would have to give him heavy health DR to compensate or make him yet another no shields high health warframe to slap arcanes on to make invincible without effort like inaros, grendel, or nidus.

Caliban needs some fixes, but they're not huge and he already has a great foundation for these ideas.
One thing I'd throw in is more variety to his Sentient summons, like throw in Brachiolysts, Battalysts, and Aerolysts. So he has a Melee spin shield heal unit, a long range unit, an attack AOE unit, and a team health regen unit.
Oh and get rid of the enemy cap on Sentient Wrath because it's dumb.

They should have allowed him to select different types of sentients via a Minelayer/Quiver sort of menu.
If he could summon any number of three or four different types of sentients, it actually would have made sense why you only summon one at a time.
That could have also dictated what bonuses he gets from synergizing the summons with other abilities. I. E. he gets the vacuum effect Trib mentioned from melee sentients when he uses his 1, but enemies hit by sentient rage take adaptive damage from all sources if you're near, say, a support specialized sentient.

Your point on bringing "the crew" into your spin, alongside what another commenter (Lucas Fraczek) suggestion of different/more types of buddies to cycle through would be perfect. Each sentient has a bonus thing it adds when paired with the spin. You are encouraged to use all of them, and more abilities, therefore, more synergy within his kit.
Players could still choose to spam out one type of sentient for one reason or another, maybe they each provide a different passive for what ones out. So as is, our melee buddies give shield regen+over shield. The other types could be a higher stack on "Great Value" Adaption, so you arent making players choose between shite off-brand adaption or the real deal. Maybe one gives a damage boost to weapons, or a minor health regen one, etc etc. Have them tie back into his passive, so they also give boosts to the allies within affinity range. It would make caliban a decent team support, being able to throw out a crew that could provide additional adaptation or shield/health regen for allies.
Hes a second oberon basically, jack of all trades, master of none. Nothing he could put out would ever outshine the ACTUAL support frames, but hes a decent middle ground for a bunch of roles.

Always good to hear a Wayne audio clip in my favorite warframe creators' videos.
    It's happened, like, twice.
My test for warframes is taking them to saturn proxima, solo, NOT BUILDING FOR INSANE EFFICIENCY, arming them with basic, non-aoe weaponry, and trying to raid a single crewship.
If the normal weaponry is regularly functioning better than most of the frames' abilities designed specifically to synergize into dealing damage without sucking the energy dry, then there's a problem.
It's a basic test of "can you clear out this narrow, AI-pathfinding-bottlenecked area with a small number of tough and scary dudes flowing through it, using the tools your frame gives you to handle for dealing with this exact situation? And if not, which thing was causing issues?"
In Caliban's case, his Razor Gyre and its stupid "hold click to power up, but it also chews through your energy at a growing rate, but ALSO if you use that same button while an enemy's toe was in your reticule, you teleport to them and lose all that damage, but ALSO the conceit of health regen to offset vulnerability is shattered by healing slower and even more costly than Oberon's 3 when Nekros is in town, but ALSO you can cast sentient wrath while spinning, but you aren't rewarded for this energy-draining maneuver during this vulnerable state by any extra Gyre damage output beyond Wrath's normal enemy debuff"
is what takes him from an interesting concept to absolute garbage. He's way too energy hungry for too little payoff and, just like your verdict, I genuinely could not figure out what DE wanted him to be, despite there CLEARLY being a recipe for something decent.

To add onto some of his issues, the tick rate of the summon's spin damage does not match its animation and it even whiffs its normal attacks at point blank range, somehow. The summons also end Sentient Wrath prematurely if they hit an affected enemy. Regarding Razor Gyre, as if it wasn't bad enough, its energy channeling gets worse both the more it is charged AND the longer it is active, just like Grendel's 1. It genuinely is awful to maintain.
Great video as always, enjoy your hiatus, can't wait for Elden Ring shenanigans if you decide to record them.
I've posted on the megathread for him regarding my own feedback, but to compound your own suggestions:
Razor Gyre: Remove that godawful energy drain scaling increase. In addition to the dash not consuming charge, allow Cali to deactivate Razor Gyre w/o losing charge immediately. Make it decrease by a small percentage per second after a duration while out of Razor Gyre, but if you use his other abilities the decay stops and the duration resets. Fix the synergies not working and make the energy drain when boosting damage a small, flat value instead of getting more expensive with higher values. Lastly, either innately or via augment, allow kills to add enemy HP onto the damage charge. Ya know, make it like Splinter Storm/Maim. DE could even go as far as give Cali additional benefits to a higher Gyre charge, such as better efficiency and other abilities inheriting some or all of Gyre's charge for their damage, but I won't count on it.
Sentient Wrath, personally I don't like the ragdolls going wherever they want. Just tether them to their current location on hit or make it exactly like Rhino's Stomp w/ a debuff attached, idc.
Lethal Progeny, fix the attacks whiffing, increase the damage tick rate for its spin attack, and, if Sentient Wrath is unchanged, fix the Progeny ending Sentient Wrath prematurely on hit.

But it’s Caliban’s source of survivability too and half the time they don’t shield me and I can’t recast my 3 either to maybe pray to their Ai to actually shield me. I always die when my sentiments refuse to shield.

I think of him as a tanky debuff-support like Garuda. His 2 and 4 make enemies die to the slightest touch, and his 3 is decent survivability via shields and distracting enemies. I like to subsume Shock/Smite/Nourish over his 1 and use it to buff up his summons and teammates for even more damage amplification, the progeny can actually kill stuff pretty well when all your buffs/debuffs are up.

    Very Good Video!
I have an idea to buff Lethal Progeny:
Caliban can summon one of *3* Sentients, either a Conculyst, a Battalyst or a Mimic. The Conculyst is full Melee Unga Bunga, the Battalyst is in the middle and the Mimic is ranged thanks to his traffic director lasers. He can have *3* Sentients on the field at any given time in any given combination (ex. 2 Mimics and 1 Battalyst, 1 Battalyst, 1 Mimic and 1 Conculyst, etc.) and each of these types has a Synergy with one of his other abilities:
    1) The Conculyst has Synergy with Razor Gyre, joining the Spinning so as to give Caliban Adaptive Damage and increase his speed
    2) The Battalyst has Synergy with Sentient Wrath, using his Prism Laser to boost the damage of the attack and increase the Damage Weakness debuff
    3) The Mimic has Synergy with the S U C C Beam- I mean, Fusion Strike, Increasing both the laser's AND the Armor Stripping Field's maximum range

@triburos After watching your video I have a few more ideas that I think could work for buffing spin to win boi. I think the razor gyre damage should be changed to be more like saryn's spores, as you use the ability you build up damage, using the boost should take a percentage of damage that scales down with something like efficiency. This would also invoke a damage decay when you exit the ability, giving you time to recast fusion strike and the sentient bros. This would give razor gyre more use and synergy with the rest of his kit and make the ability more viable, provided DE lowers the energy drain as well. If DE is trying to make it that your focus is to use razor gyre to put high DPS into enemies who have had their armors stripped, making so the damage doesn't constantly disappear would make the ability MUCH more usable. And I agree that THE CREW should have all three sentients summoned at the same time. This would save you time in the downtime when you're not using razor gyre. Additionally, I think that the razor gyre dash is a good concept, it just needs to have less of a cost. Overall I think DE has the potential of making Caliban a very good frame, he just needs some tweaks that would synergize his kit better. THE CREW's shield buffing in combination with razor gyre's healing can make Caliban VERY difficult to kill. So I have no major gripes with that ability, just the fact that it takes so long to get the ability to its best state. I feel that DE intended to make razor gyre and fusion strike his bread and butter, with his other two abilities supplementing those abilities. Let me know what you think about my idea. I want to know if I have actually suggested a good change or I'm just being brainless.

Yeah you could probably tweak Caliban's numbers and call it a day and most people would be happy with that. Personally I think some reworks would be nice, like for Razor Gyre just, throwing enemies out of it, or taking damage increases the damage of the gyre, or adds elemental effects to it would be real nice, feel in flavor and really soup him up. Two is fine, but the cap could go, summoning all three for three would be nice, I think unique models would also be pretty good, and maybe have each do a different thing? Have one be the spinning melee thing, one be the shield booster that hurls electricity and maybe a sniper one, I do like the idea that they all contribute to gyre. About the only thing I can think of for 4 is either add in a damage reduction or make it move faster.
I do like adaptability but it overriding a passive is a bad idea. Maybe if you slot in adaptability or your team mates have it, a separate counter goes up so instead of adapting you deal more damage based on your 'over-adaptation'?

    • @FrostiKing
      @FrostiKing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Also another idea for Razor Gyre would be to nerf the damage (Not like it did alot anyway) and just have it as a passive thing, like, one of his arms could detach or grow another one to spin it and have it act like Equinox's Maim, where it's just a damaging field that builds up as long as you can sustain the energy?

Right-o, so, here was my assessment of the Caliban Playstyle™:
Passive: Good. It might not be as strong as an actual Adaptation, but keeping in mind that he gets constant shield regen from THE CREW, it's pretty reliable, especially when you consider some aspects of his kit. Yes, don't put on proper Adaptation - if you absolutely must have some kind of insurance, use Rolling Guard.
1-Razor Gyre: Actual trash. You have to build so hard for it to do real damage that it's basically pointless. It returns health, but that's only something a new player is going to appreciate on a frame with innate damage reduction and shield regen, not someone 8 frames deep by the time they get to The New War and 12 by the time they actually bother to grind him out and in all likelihood is probably going to have some Zenurik levels if not Arcane Energize.
2-Sentient Wrath: A panic button. Used when he somehow manages to lose shields and the enemies aren't already immediately dead. Useful for saving your keister. Enemies have a tendency to float into Void-taken corners, at least until they take damage, at which point the CC falls off entirely? At least, this is the case when I shoot enemies affected by it with Mesa's Regulators.
3-THE CREW: Good, but you're barking up the wrong tree if you're using them for damage--they're not for that. They're for shield regen and being meat shields, which they are damn good at being thanks to their sentient adaptation, even at lower ability strength. They lose out in efficacy as levels go higher though, since they don't scale with the ambient zone level and have no means of scaling off of nearby enemies, meaning if you try to go 2 hour steel path survival with these bad boys, they're going to start getting one-shot eventually, adaptation or no. Additionally, they're costly. Each and every one costs so much, and they don't really last that long, so having a Crew present 100% of the time is pretty unlikely.
4-The Nuke: Decent! Not fantastic, though, not compared to contemporaries. Yes, enemies that go in can in fact leave and still be stripped, but they *shouldn't* leave. Same deal with Xaku's absolute territory. If the armour's gone, the battle's won.
Here's the issue. It costs 100e base per cast. There's a lot of warframes that can strip defences rather effectively, some of which have that function on 100e buttons, and most of them do it better, not to mention those frames that do it faster, cheaper, or more reliably.
Xaku: Stripzones are huge and almost literally last forever unless you've got 500 nullifiers on your ass.
Ember: Constantly stripping everywhere she goes as part of her energy maintenance routine, also counts as a panic button. Also even if not at full strength, the heat proc it causes will strip 50% over 1 second and maintain for proc duration.
Banshee: Costs 25e, and doesn't need much modding to get done in a huge area.
Ash: Doesn't even really need the armour strip because he's got so much finisher and slash stuff going on, but sure, it's there, and costs 25e.
Frost: Locks down every enemy that's armour-stripped with a hard stop CC for the duration, does a surprising amount of damage in the process, too, especially when they die while frozen.
Vauban: Not only is he constantly stripping armour, the enemies being stripped are locked up, any allies in a stripzone while they're working on enemies get a hefty armour buff, and when the stripzone ends, the enemies get CC'd even more with a vacuum.
And many more that can achieve something similar. Granted, most of these are armour only, but it's rare that shields prove an effective barrier to player agency, even after they got buffed for enemies. And even then Frost's Avalanche deals cold damage, which nukes shields.
My main criticism is: Caliban's kit lacks the numbers to make it stand out, and his playstyle is a solved problem on many Warframes. What he brings to the player isn't much, and what he brings to the team isn't much. You MIGHT get something building for insane duration instead of good range, and just putting the stripzone on chokepoints and doorways. But his playstyle isn't much different from Ember's, all told, except for the lack of a meat shield lackey, easily solved by slapping Mind Control on her. You could also put Shuriken on Revenant and get something pretty similar: Spinning, minions, armour stripping left and right, good defences.
Xaku with Covenant is better than Caliban. And even without it, They have a better panic button in the form of "The entire map is now my ally forever."
Revenant with Seeking Shuriken is better than Caliban, and has an infinitely better spin2win.
In terms of passive damage reduction just from existing, freakin' Baruuk is better than Caliban, and he's got an exalted melee that vacuums enemies in to boot.
Caliban is far from the worst warframe, that'd be a toss-up between Banshee and Hydroid, but right now, his only selling points to me are:
~Adaptation to all allies in Affinity Range without having to manage an ability
    ~Silly bifurcated appearance
    ~Nice helmet, and
    ~THE CREW (for aesthetic purposes).
He doesn't stand out. He doesn't have a THING that you can crank to a billion or otherwise feels natural to play around -- at least not until he gets some augments -- but you CAN put Roar on and get his minions to do more damage, but like, you could also do something similar with any number of other minion-capable warframes, with minions that aren't locked to melee. Also why the fuck does he have lifesteal on his 1 when he's a shield regen frame with built in damage reduction? This is about as valuable as Revenant's 3 stealing life and shields when he shouldn't ever be getting damaged in the first place. Seeing this on Caliban's kit literally makes me think Scott genuinely wants Warframes to have a designated Bad Ability like he "joked" about back in the day.
Warframe has an okay history of "Well, you like all these abilities, so let's reskin them, retune them, shuffle them around, and put them on a different Warframe" because usually those warframes have something that can really make them stand out. Caliban... doesn't?
Honestly, if his CREW came out in a burst of 3 instead of 1 at a time, reducing the overall cost for full shield regen by two thirds, I'd not feel so bad about their atrocious duration. If his StripZone bubble had a longer base duration so I didn't have to spam it as much, that'd be lovely. If DE stopped putting Climbing-Energy-Drain that eats more and more and MORE per second on every toggled ability since Mesa that'd be fuckin' poggers, as the youths say, and maybe make Razor Gyre slightly less horrible (it shouldn't have ever been on Grendel's Feast, since it already has scaling drain from captured enemies, and essentially makes the new band-aid mod a MANDATORY band-aid instead of a pleasant option).

12:23 There is the possibility that they have something planned for this ability regarding the Sentient type you summon so you can mix and match them, but thats just a theory. Also Lethal Progeny does have increased threat level as well as normal Sentient's damage adaptation and health gates, so you can worry less about enemies targeting players. But I agree, It is a little tedious until either this is changed, or an augment is added for this ability

So post reworked they pretty much fixed all the problems I had with him my scale goes something like this
S Top 4% of all frames
    A Top 16%
    B Top 29%
    C Top 46%
    C- bottom 54%
    D bottom 33%
F worst than 80% of frames
    Inaros
Caliban was around a C- when he came out but they fixed his major issues
    1. He was really slow and 4 didn’t offer protection
    2. He on release felt was supposed to be a weapons plat-former but lacked the synergy but sentient wrath and fusion strike we’re begging to be taken advantage of
    3. Summons were no that good
    how did they fix it?
    1. They made Razor gyre more of a tool used to manage energy economy
    2. Gave him invincibility on his 4
    3. Got rid of the enemy cap cap
    4. Made it more pronounced that he was supposed to be a weapon platform with a unique unique effect that makes enemies more vulnerable to other statuses
Caliban is now more coherent and faster and actually thinking twice about subsuming off razor Gyre

The one thing I want with both frames with the spin abilities (excluding dance macabra because Im fine with how it is) I wish it was just the bottom half of the frame that spun so the top half could use weapons, would be MUCH nicer and I wouldn't mind the slow movement then, like inaros can just turn his bottom half into the sand storm spinner and caliban is sentient no one would question if his bottom half spun independent of him (with a model change, don't break the chop sticks in half)

Concepts to adjust his kit to make him stand out a bit more:
---Adaptive passive is calculated and applied after considering Adaptation. So after Adaptation maxes out at 90% negation, the passive would be able to cut that remaining damage by another 50%, meaning overall, you have 95% damage negation when running both at maximum power. It's not much different, but it's something.
---Gyre augment that has you dump energy into the ability at the start during a rev-up phase, granting movement speed and damage based on how much power you dumped in, but you lose the dash capability.
---Squad adjustment that lets you pick between different types of Sentients to join you at a tap (like quiver), holding the button to cast. Gives access to sword, gun, and support minions.
---Stomp/Beam adjustment, giving some synergy between his remaining 2 skills, like enemies explode if they're killed with the ult while lifted, spreading/refreshing the armor stripping field. Or after casting Beam, stomping is temporarily empowered, sending a more powerful shock-wave in the facing direction)

Some Ideas I came up with watching this are as follows for each ability.
For his passive, grant a bonus while using Adaptation. Personal idea? have it to they grow damage reduction faster when they fall in the same zone. so a 90% Adaptation mod will gain resistance faster for the first 50%, and/or make him lose stacks of resistance slower with Adaptation in his loadout. You don't even need that to effect with other his allies adaptation mods, just Caliban's.
For his first ability, grant Razor Gyre more slash proc (if they want it to be a damaging ability), more damage to vulnerable/armor stripped enemies (if they want it to synergize better), or increase the healing and give a damage reduction when in use (if it's meant to be a healing and survival tool). also, I agree with your idea about the movement speed change.
For his second ability, it's solid. Maybe increase the number of affected enemies, but it's fine where it is.
For his summons, either grant them some range (if their meant to be damage dealers), increase his shield recharge (if they're meant to be support), or give them a higher threat to enemies (if they do this, have them try to stay a little further from Caliban so he's not put in the line of fire as much)
And for his last ability, let him use it while spinning for a weaker version (in damage or armor strip) that acts like a omni-directional nuke blocked by line of sight.
All this together would make Caliban known as the support tank with ranged debuff, aggro control, and survivability. Thoughts?

  • @ProjectXA3

I feel like the reason his kit feels that way is that DE didn't have a plan for his abilities in terms of combat applications to begin with. I feel like they had a thematic setup of Shit What Sentients Doo and backfilled secondary attributes onto those abilities as the ideas came to them
