I’m surprised that practicality wasn’t mentioned. Gengar is easily identifiable from behind, Nidorino’s sprite is expressive and shows motion and poses easily, and both sprites fit the screen without losing detail.

+ Gengar is very dark, Nidorino is very light. When using only black and white that's easy to work with whilst still having them look the same as they do in the anime
EXACTLY, this is the real reason why they were chosen in my opinion, a technical pragmatic reason. They probably added the lore later either by accidend or by noticing the similarities.

While the silhouette in the anime is clearly Bruno, don't forget that the Adventures manga canonized the fact that Oak is super-ripped under his lab coat.

The manga brought together all the games in some of the greatest ways with a extremely consistent storyline. In addition to every plot point filled to some degree.
Don't forget how pryce or whatever that old bastards name was had a enormous terrorist organization of child slaves so he could get 2 lapras back, the manga goes hard. Not to mention that final scene is phenomenal. Better than any scene in the anime (bye bye Butterfree comes close tho)

I think because Agatha was always using elite 4 ruled leval pokemon, where oak always grind a bit in victory road before challenging Agatha. 100 leval nidorino's poison sting,hurts leval 55 gengar. (SORRY, I forget what leval kanto elite 4 use, so I guessed 55).
@@meetgor534 that could be or maybe he uses Thunderbolt or Ice Beam (I think Nidorino can use Ice Beam) Thunderbolt could paralyze the Gengar and do some powerful damage Ice Beam could Freeze Gengar and also do powerful damage.
I think in the manga he developed a way to hit ghost types with normal moves
It may have been bide, which apparently works on ghost types in gen 1, and if it was any other time, I'd say he used foresight and use normal type moves. If Oak made his Nidorino have a high defense, kept it from going to sleep, and tanked the hits, bide could work wonders.
Also, eviolite, which greatly increases defence and Special defence, of it existed in gen 1.
Or, simply, eviolite,X defence X, taunt, bide. Might work.

that would make sense to me, Agatha did say he was tough, & it would make some amount of sense for Bruno to have based his look on Oak's given the e4 seem to blatantly look up to Oak in gen 1, also tv was rarely live back then & pokemon is set even further in the past, so Oak being in 2 recordings at once really is far from impossible.

Pokemon Masters' key ingredient for its weirdness is Hoopa, who has been pulling sync pairs through time and dimension. Evidence of this is that while Cynthia and Cyrus both appear to be from Platinum, they recall the events differently. Cynthia remembers him being defeated in the Distortion World while Cyrus says that he was about to use Dialga and Palkia to create his new world when he and Palkia were sent through a ring to Pasio.
Have they ever actually mentioned or shown Hoopa? If not, I wonder if the story will ever come to unveil and explain all this rings stuff.
@@Kiirabu197Both, actually. Hoopa was a Pokemon in Lear's possession until Team Break stole it. Rachel talks about how Team Break summoned a sync pair at the beginning of the Solgaleo event. There have also been times when Hoopa is shown. There was a story where the protagonist meets a researcher who talks about Hoopa only for it to fly behind the researcher, only being seen by the protagonist. There were at least one or two instances where Team Break is forcing Hoopa to summon sync pairs.

Loved how in pokemon adventure, Oak was a normal type specialist, but was skilled enough so that his Kangaskhan’s Dizzy Punch (this was before Scrappy was an ability) actually affected Agatha’s Gengar. The final match in their first championship was Kangaskhan vs Gengar, showing that he understood type advantage, but developed ways to circumvent them over time.

My favorite theory to explain that one is that since the meteor that *supposedly* brought Clefairy to Kanto hadn't dropped yet, the Moon Stones it brought with it also hadn't fallen. So many Pokémon couldn't be mutated by their power and turn into new forms.

& Mr.Fuji, they're referenced as traveling together, they probably also were taken about by Mr.Briney when Blaine & Mr.Fugi travelled to Mew's habitat

If I remember correctly, in the manga, Oak and Agatha were actually childhood friends along with a few other people like Pryce, Kurt, and the day care center couple. I also remember Agatha mentioning she and Oak fought before in a Pokémon tournament to Blue. Oak used a Kangaskhan and Chansey though.

Plot twist: The opening battle in the anime was a rerun from years earlier, and instead of Bruno that silhouette is actually Oak from when he was young and ripped.
My first Pokemon battle that I watched was actually at the end of a diamond a pro series where Paul and Ash battle each other

Because now instead of a flying will-o'-the-wisp as seen in the Gen 1 anime with it flying around alongside its pre-evolutions, it's strictly depicted as a shadow coming up from the ground (specifically a Clefairy's shadow), which is how Mega Gengar got Shadow Tag until everyone realized what a colossal mistake that was; I think they should give Gengar Prankster if they want to stick the new always-grounded Gengar while respecting all of its depictions across the years and giving it an actually useful Ability without giving it one that they deem _too_ useful such as Levitate.
@@cintronproductions9430 Not to mention Mega Rayquaza, Arceus and Darkrai back in the day, and especially Mewtwo in Gen 1; they don't care about balance among "Uber" Legendaries and Mythicals, they establish clear winners and losers to tell a story and force everyone to give all their attention to whatever the newest story is with the stick of power creep more than the carrot of gripping narratives.
Nintendo never cared about anything near close to "balance" in the games, the mere existence of Smogon, the fiasco with the Gigantamax and the banishment of the megas is proof of that.

I've always liked this theory too, been scrolling around to see if it got posted, glad to see someone did. A bit of supporting evidence, think about how Agatha watched over the Veridian Gym for the "new" gym leader... I mean why the hell else would an Elite 4 member care about some gym that's spends 90% of the time closed anyway? A grandmother on the other hand would make sense.

In Bruno's case, in the tcg, fighting rock and ground (what nidorino can become) all fall under the same type, so there is your connection if you want :P
I always found the Oak and Agatha backstory stuff interesting. They clearly know and even have some sort of fondness for each other but at the same time Agatha seems bitter about Oak. Clearly something happened behind the curtains

One other thing to consider: in the Pokémon Adventures manga, they actually bring up the final fight of Oak and Agatha where Oak triumphs and becomes champion. In that, he looks much much younger. Though the anime is trying to show Bruno, another theory you could consider is this: is it possible that Ash is watching an old fight between Agatha and Young Oak, possibly as an “add” showing off Oak’s skills before he appears on screen talking about the starter Pokémon?

The first Pokémon battle I ever saw was Ash’s Squirtle vs. Nidorino, back when I was around 4. It’s hard to imagine such a little thing can change your life entirely, but here I am, 14 years later and loving Pokémon!
The fighting scene was a replay from the old league and bruno was young oak, that is mentioned to be handsome and ecc...

@@JT5555 Oak could have been the one who gave those to Bruno , we know Oak & the e4 are connected, it can even be deduced pretty easily that Oak had been the Indigo league's Champion in the past from him entering the Champion's chamber
I looked at the list of TMs Nidorino could learn, and am like "I could beat a Gengar with a Nidorino with some of these moves...How is Thunderbolt useless?!" Challenge accepted sir. You just flippantly waived off Rest, Ice Beam, and Double team.
In the anime opening at least, Bruno's Onix comes out of a green pokeball rather than a red one. Perhaps Ash is watching a tournament where rental pokemon are being used. Not that rental pokemon were even a thing in gen 1, but it's a thought.

That was a battle between Oak and Agatha, the source of this news was the Oak unite episode from Pokémon Masters EX.
It is interesting to note that in the pokemon adventures manga, Oak does still battle sometimes, in disguise as "Dr. O," whose uniform looks pretty similar to Bruno's... With the added random face wraps and occasional tank top and messy hair. Looking at silhouettes of Dr. O and Bruno side by side, it might be a little difficult to tell them apart? Of course, there's still the conundrum of the TV channels in the anime, but it is very important to consider that not all television programs are shown live. I would wager that Oak's starter pokemon commercial was recorded ahead of time and distributed to various media broadcasters, so this would effectively negate the paradox of "Two Oaks in different places at the same time."

I think whether it was intended at the start, they've definitely retroactively push it that way, that the fight is intended to showcase Agatha V. Oak - and that's really cool, the only piece of evidence I can think of that would point to that not being the case originally is in the scrapped Prof. Oak fight in Gen 1, his three potential teams don't have any member of the Nido line.Though being a researcher and a seasoned former trainer, it could easily be argued he could have a Nidorino or Nidoking but is just choosing not to use it in place of another mon.
I think aesthetically the reason Gengar and Nidorino were chosen was because of how "cool" their designs are, potentially also the contrast of one being bipedal and one being a quadruped, and as you said, one being fully evolved and the other not. Nidorino is also a pretty easy-to-obtain Pokemon in the early stages of Gen 1 as Nidoran is catchable as early as Viridian City and evolves pretty early (level 16, iirc).
Both also evolve (or evolved in Gengar’s case) using a non-level-up means, so seeing Gengar so early on might cause people playing to be like “damn, how do I get that?” - Pokémon wasn’t an overnight success in Japan, Red and Green were more of a slow build success, so I don’t think there were any guide books published as soon as it was released, so having a trade-evolution mon being shown so early is a great way to encourage players to think outside the box when it comes to how to obtain certain monsters. I always thought the anime one was showcasing a battle between a regular trainer, and Bruno (who now gets a Nidorino for reasons)
after all Gengar would be REALLY good against Bruno seeing how Bruno has several fighting types, and this Bruno uses Nidorino so the trainer sent Gengar in as a counter.
I would love to see more about Oak and Agatha's relationship. Their past somewhat intrigues me. As well as how he won with a freaking Nidorino in gen 1 with just Poison Sting. Even if he used TMs, it should not be as easy as Agatha puts it out to be.
Oh and my first battle was Ash's first fight with Paul so that was a pretty good opener if I do say so myself.
Came here from the season compilation, cause while I was there I developed a bit of a pet theory... Bruno is technically the fighting type elite four member, but his use of two onyxs suggests at least a fondness for the ground type. Maybe he's using Nidorino in the fight against Agatha to train it, to eventually evolve it into a Nidoking. While Nidoking is a stone evolution, and can be evolved as soon as it evolves from Nidoran, there are a few exclusive moves that could only be learned if the Nidorino learned them before evolving. Namely, if he wanted the Nidoking to know Double Kick to match his Fighting type (and assuming the anime is working by RGB rules) he'd have to level the Nidorino all the way to level 50 before he evolved it into Nidoking.
Also worth noting in the whole “they represent what pokemon is about” thing, is that both Pokémon evolve by trading. Which was one of the main things involved in designing the game.
Uhhh no? Nidorino never has evolved via trade, it does so with a Moon Stone, Gengar does though.

Even though Rhydon was the first Pokémon designed, Nidorino and Gengar were the first Pokémon battling, which is mainly what you do in the games. These three designs were implemented on the cover or an unofficial book by Satashi Tagiri, where it shows a trainer with a Rhydon stumbling upon two Pokémon that look a lot like Nidorino and Gengar fighting in the woods.

But what if it were a flashback to Oak's prime battling? And then a cut scene to "Now, Oak's giving away Pokemon in an attempt to complete what he's calling 'A Pokedex."
I knew about the Masters thing, but for all intensive purposes (especially since it’s referenced in both the games and manga), I think it being Agatha vs Oak fits really well, might as well be canon.
I also want to comment that in the manga, during a flashback of Oak becoming Champion back in the day, he was also shirtless, (although wearing a sleeveless undershirt) similar to what seems to be “Bruno” in the anime. Do we know that the fight Ash was watching was a live match? Or perhaps a rerun of Oak vs Agatha from years prior? His Pokémon team likely changed after he decided to no longer be Champion, and instead become a researcher, so he may have had an Onix back then.
As a final note, in the manga, Oak says “No... I’ve already won myself a Championship. I don’t need this.” And bows out in the semi-finals to let Red and Blue fight in the finals. As he says that, it shows him and Agatha in flashback style. Not to mention the hidden Trainer data with Oak as a Champion in Gen 1. I think it’s safe to say this was in consideration since the beginning, Oak vs Agatha, and is only finally getting more context with things like Masters recently.

Hey, here's a fun fact: In the Pokémon Adventures/Special Manga, Green Oak learns a technique that allows his Pokémon to hit ghosts with Normal-type Moves. It is later shown that Professor Oak does the same thing with a Kangaskahn (before abilities, so Scrappy doesn't count!), implying that he could still use Nidorino's otherwise completely walled-off moveset to defeat Agatha's Gengar.
Glad you covered the canon/non canon of Masters, because yeah some of it seems kind of important, such as Blue's Pidgeot being treated as contraband when he tried taking it to Galar, or why Red doesn't talk much.

6:25 it actually DOES work. The lore in the game is Hoopa brought everyone to Pasio through his hoops. He could easily bring trainers from different dimensions and time periods to fight in the League Cup. Lear wanted to make a league of the strongest trainers and his friend Hoopa did that for him.

not really, even level 1 pokemon can 1 shot trainers if they attack them & the Pooch got between him & his pokeballs, pokemon are kind of incredibly dangerous, is why you are kept out of grass even in the low level areas in the games
Here's something that will blow your mind; it's not a Gengar.
In the original scene at least, as all subsequent iterations/references to it were made a Gengar as that's how a lot of people interpreted the ambiguous back sprite, but if you compare the back sprite in the original to Gengar and Snorlax in their original iterations, you can see how the two could very easily be interchanged by mistake. The main difference is Gengar's claws are and have always been all one color with its body, where as Snorlax's are separated and white, just like the smooth-backed, white-clawed Pokemon in the original scene fighting Nidorino.
If you re-watch the original with Snorlax in mind, it's impossible to unsee.
Yeah, Agatha and Oak were Rivals back in the day. Also, moonstones were much rarer back then, so he couldn't evolve his nidorino

I think that Ash/Satoshi could´ve been looking a repetition of an old pokemon battle (which would explain why Oak can also be seen on TV at the same time and be even a hint about who was the trainer on screen). And although the silhouette shown in the battle clearly looks like Bruno, considering the description that Agatha makes about him and the pointy looking hair (that kinda looks a bit like Gary´s pointy hair style) I think that the character there could in fact be Professor Oak.
