I assume at the professional level, they have databases on the tendencies of goalkeepers as well. Like do they stay put or go early... how often do they go right vs left... etc... THAT would be cool commentary to be shared and discussed during a shoot out.. The tendencies of both the GK and the penalty takers... and maybe even a computer model prediction... Kinda like having Tony Romo telling us what the QB is about to do based on the down and how the D lined up....
Most kickers will choose a side but it will not be firm. At least in mens, most above average takers now change during the last second til contact to see where the kicker is going. Run ups get very predictable if you choose a firm side
A couple of more tips that have helped my daughter... 1) end your practices with a "4 corners drill." Take PKs and place quality shots in all 4 corners consecutively before leaving. You are tired, it adds a little pressure at the end of a long sessuon and it is frequent enough you become confident. 2) shape your body like you are going one way and open or close your hips to steer the ball where you want it to go. My daughter hasn't missed in years and is the dedicated pk taker. She goes high right everytime and keepers that know where it is going can't stop it. In her most recent U19 ECNL game she had a hat trick in PKs in the 1st half against a Virginia commit keeper with 3 consecutive high right shots in the 1st half. Sending the keeper the wrong way twice and then increased the power slightly on the 3rd when the keeper waited to see where it went.
Thx for sharing. I m kinda shocked that u write about your daughter. U watch for her football tutorials when my parents dont even go to my matches... U re W dad
As a goalkeeper I like watching videos like these to have more of an idea on where they will strike. Last game I saved a game winning penalty, which was pretty nice. I still play at youth teams since I'm only 14. So when there is a penalty I have time to see where the ball will go because most of the time the striker won't shoot very hard.
Would be interested in a follow up on approach angle. As a former goalkeeper myself, my save percentage went up dramatically when I understood the starting position and approach angle as it’s more difficult for shooters to change shot direction when their hips are aligned in one direction. Great info and vid all around, though!
Hi Matt, I've been following you for a very long time. With every video you make, the quality gets better and better! I'm also a big fan of your stretching videos because I play football too. My request for you is, if you could make a short stretching routine to be done at night after training, ideally before going to bed. Thank you very much. Cheers, Gabri.
The emotional contagion is interesting bc maybe you shouldn’t show any frustration or anything when you miss bc that could transfer negatively to your teammate and positively to the opponent
As a goalkeeper that has worked with many unexperienced or even worse goalies at different levels, your completely right on why the right side of the goal is better at 5:20
In competitive matches I have a 100% penalty take rate No CaP one thing I’m proud of my new team I told them this after the original penalty taker missed in the beginning of the season and I said I will take the next one for the rest of the season I took 3 penalties and got all of them. It’s funny because my past teams I wasn’t the designated pen taker
funny thing is that i took my first penalty for several years in a match a few weeks ago and i did a lot of things "wrong"! i spoke with the keeper before i placed the ball on the spot and turned my back to him as i went into position. i picked the right side to shoot at but while shooting i changed my mind and shot left and scored. The keeper had jumped to the right where i would've shot to. I still don't know if i subconsciously reacted to the keepers movement out of the side of eye as i ran i was more concentrated on connecting true with the ball and at the very least hit the target. One phenomenon i noticed is when i took a large breath as i waited for the ref's whistle a wave of calm overcame me.
A 1-step penalty is a) how a penalty was originally meant to be taken, and b) most effective because you do NOT get more power with a longer run-up, and a short run-up gives the keeper less time to make a decision.
Correlation does imply causation... Players who celebrate after their penalty is mostly because their team are ahead in the shootout. So actually, being ahead in the shootout is the reason why players celebrate, not the other way around, that's my believe.
surely a good one would be to aim at the keepers weak hand? so bottom corner 63% on the left 73% on the right, so if the keeper is left handed go for the left and vice versa
This is hysterical: using "research" to make statements that are nothing more than correlations which, according to the MOST BASIC principle of research which is "correlation is not cause-and-effect"! Embarrassing.

Wrong. Keepers always go low. ALWAYS
you either look at the keeper or choose a side, not both.

Banger vid Matt, good pacing
This video is one of the best so far Matt, it was super engaging

Next time you practice pks tell the GK which side you’ll go for, it massively improves your accuracy ⚽️
Such a high quality video! Keep it up
Awesome video, Matt!
Excellent presentation of data
Nice editing man❤
I am still waiting for a collab with 7mlc...

Awesome video. Thank you so much for going through the data and sharing.
Matt, we need a breakdown of the Griddy you did during the San Antonio game
Great video 👍
the level of quality of this video 🙌
As a keeper I will take notes on what you lot do. Also great vid
As a winger, I welcome the challenge
As a striker I accept too
no cap, my mother used to go to the LSE. i visited the UK 2 weeks ago and we went there. I am greek and I am 13, almost 14
Great video, like always... Except for the Messi graphic.. 😅

Another great video Matt! Should have put the clip of Nate scoring in there.
Martinez have 50% penalties saved (some missed) when he play for Argentina. Bro knows something

Hit with 75% pwr. Harry Kane will like to have a word

Run up closer to 45 degrees is harder to read.

Kicking to the right, the ball curls in an arc away from the keeper.
Kicking to the left, the ball curls towards the keeper.
92% isn’t perfect. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself 😂
Step 10 invent a better way to resolve a tied game
Step 11 don’t pretend you are better at football than the team you tied with when playing football
The Brazilian NT should watch this video

ah you mentioned it
Curious how they measured shot power. I mean, the conclusion makes sense, but how do we know what someone’s 100% power looks like compared to 75%?
how would they know the shot power in the research paper tho?
And still there are pundits who say you can't prepare for a penalty shootout ...
7:00-7:05
ill celebrate if i score
Thanks
perfect
Just take the ball and score man
🤞🏽
A keeper diving to their right will dive off their right foot, not their left as you described.
Wrong
@ I’m right, keepers dive low on PKs, you go off the foot on the side you dive.
