I know this is ancient, but I don't think that con for 7th gear is really valid... 1) the two 7 speed h-pattern shifted cars I'm aware of, a 911 and C7 vette, require a push down engagement. 2) The 7th gear position could be used alternatively as reverse if the driver prefers reverse to the right and up rather than on the other side 3) It just doesn't make sense to consider it a negative feature if it's not taking anything away from the shifter, which it doesn't appear to be doing.
Also, I believe the reasoning for the lockout in these cars was because 7th was considered the "fuel economy" gear and didn't have a practical intended use outside of that. Also a missed shift from 4th to 7th would suck.
Yeah but the Thrustmaster TH8A doesn't have a 7th Gear Lockout, and is also much more visually appealing and is cheaper and is Universal with all wheels on PC out of the box
i have the clubsport shifter table clamp. the picture at 2:40 is the wrong clamp. thats the clubsport WHEEL table clamp. also better to switch to sq mode by pulling lever on both sides of shifter body and the shifter is based off new 911 turbo 7 speed, according to Fanatec site
I THINK, the pushdown for the "7th" gear, is if you want to use that spot for reverse. Iver had a number of standard cars, and Ive had reverse in different places. My Audi is down and up in front of first, my old honda was in "6th", and I drove a friends Mazda(i think), and reverse was down and in "7th". So, I THINK that what thats about.
Good to see you reviewing the Fanatec shifter. What i don't understand is that you test it next to the "plastic Trustmaster wheel" rather than the CSW, but I guess it has to do with sponsor contracts or something. Also nice to see you again with a co-host!! All with all a "good old ISR" review! Compliments!
Inside Sim Racing Extras They have some sort of lock out, but not one that you have to push down. With the new Porsche gearboxes, you can only get into 7th from 6th, so you have to be 6th gear, then the block is taken off so you can put it into 7th. But at the end of the day, 7th on these cars are only there to cheat the European Emissions Tests. Bet most people wouldn't even use it
I know the C7 and the new 911 have 7-speed h-pattern shifters, but I had to google the lockout. Turns out that the 911 has 7th gear lockout and the C7 doesn't. I hear that 7th in a 911 is a really tall overdrive, so perhaps lockout was added to prevent potential stalling if you went from 4th to 7th; that would be a pretty significant rpm drop.. (googled again. 4th's ratio is 1.30:1 and 7th's is 0.71:1 which is a CRAZY difference if you're shifting at normal driving speeds)
Hi guys great review. Perhaps the 7th gear is not just for cars that use a 7th gear but it gives you the option of having the reverse on either side of this shifter. Just a thought.
17:33: i believe that the 7th speed is probably not really for cars but rather for... trucks. Trucking sims are a thing after all, and that crowd would need it.
to be fair, shifting position, in RACE cars, is as close at the wheel as possible, to reduce hand movements to the minimum. so, ok for the cable is too short, but realistically-wise is not wrong.
***** Hey man where can I find this adapter? Will any USB adapter work? With ProjectCARS released I really want to get a G27 and then this shifter so I can use the sequential mode and take advantage of any 7 speed H-patterns that come out soon, without spending almost $1000 for the Clubsport Base and a rim, pedals, etc. Thanks!
You can get the USB adaptor from Fanatic, although I really can't recommend this shifter. It quit working in H pattern mode. It didn't even last a year. It does not work very well with the usb adaptor either. There are many post about them. These shifters are pretty problematic and the service is slow and cumbersome. I found paddle shifters to be much more effective.
Hey, have you guys found out if the connecter cable is a 'simple' phone cable? Would be highly appreciated if you guys knew, thinking of buying one but the length of the cable is a massive drawback.
It's not a simple phone cable. It uses a 6 pin rj12 connector. The pin out is reversed from a normal cable. I couldn't find one anywhere besides Fanatec so I made my own and it works fine.
One of the Ford escorts in Dirt Rally have a seven speed, but i wonder how frustrating it would be to put into 7th reliably? Does anyone have one? Is it something that you’ll get used to or is it just always annoying
Hi guys, looks like a neat little piece of hardware... Could you tell me the kind of "button boards" you are using, left and right of the wheel? (brand and model essentially)
Hi Darin, do you know anywhere I could get a cheapish G27 as my old wheel broke on me and now I have a budget of around £170. It seems to be hard to find a cheap one in the uk
Am I missing something stupid here or is mine defective? I hooked it up directly to the PC with their adapter. The shifter does absolutely nothing, while trying to calibrate in iracing it does not recognize any of the shift points for seq or man.
+random user I figured it out. Seems that you need to install older drivers first, then install the new ones. Here is the link to the older drivers www.fanatec.com/download/Fanatec_64bit_driver_177.zip
Sorry, I can't justify $200 for something that just simply changes gears.. Especailly when they sell one that does the same thing but 6 speed for a quarter of the price.
In some cases I would agree with you, but I have this shifter and a couple others. This is by far way better than my 2 previous shifters and well worth the money. Just having the ability to switch from H-pattern to sequential was one of the big selling points for me. It also feels way more realistic. When I had to use my THRS8 shifter it just wasn't the same (made it feel like a toy). My only issue is I don't think you should have to pay an extra $19 (add $12 for shipping) for the additional usb adaptor. I'm having issues with my base and I was unable to use the shifter without buying the adapter. Should have stand alone capability when purchased.
NOTHING they sell for a quarter of the price does the same thing. Their cheap shifter is a horrible feeling, loud, plastic toy that doesn't do both shifter modes.
Will fanatec make a wheel for xbox one? Been waiting for some time now, and might just get thrustmaster. Are there other wheels for xbox one worth mentioning?
Inside Sim Racing Thanks! I just hope they release one as good if not better than their current wheel, and soon. Wonder if they will make it the official Project Cars wheel that will work with forza also. In any case I'm sure a lot of us can't wait an longer for it to be released. The rest are pissed off that their wheels don't work with new consoles.
Yes. Or you could buy a SNES and Super Mario kart. Pricey pricey Sony. Leave out the aspect of quality and everything will seem overpriced or not worth it. Let's buy crackers instead of steaks! They both will give you a full stomach.

The new Corvette C7 uses a 7 speed H-Pattern! :D
There is also on the newer Porsche like the 911.
Jonas Chen Ah not really a fan of Porsche's :/
Ispharel Racing I don't think that was the point o.O
Ch1Frequency Just stating that I don't really like Porsche's xD
Me neither.
The current Porsche 911 (991 Generation) has a 7 speed h-pattern box
2012 911 has a 7 speed h pattern option. Also, GM had a few 4+3 corvette transmission options.
11:00 for how it actually feels. You're welcome.
Thanks mate

All with all a "good old ISR" review! Compliments!
I prefer that "Plastic Thrustmaster wheel "to the CSW. The BMW rim in my opinion is too big.
If someone hasn't already mentioned this already, the new C7 Stingray and 991 Carrera (base and S) all have 7 speed H-pattern gearboxes as standard.
The 7 speed gated lockout was one of the reassons i purchased it tbh.
Most modern Porsches are 7spd H-Pattern, for future reference.
all 991 gen's with the manual option. Yes.
Do they also have that 7th push down lockout? - Jason
Inside Sim Racing Extras as far as I know yes. But I can't swear on it, cause I have only driven the PDK so far.
Inside Sim Racing Extras Well what I think is that it also gives you the possibility to map your reverse to either left or right should you wish so.

2014 c7 Stingray uses a 7 speed h pattern shifter, pretty sure a dodge viper does now too
The new Corvette uses the seven speed and the new Viper uses a six speed like it always has.
instaled it on my rig using DEEZ NUTS
I saw many comments about the 7 speed H patterns and I have my own addition, the Renault Megane F2 and maybe more F2 spec cars.
my old bmw has 5-speed manual and it uses both reverse lockout and 5th gear lockout
On fanatec's site it says that the shifter is inspired by those in porsche 911's, hence the 7 speed manual with the lockout
Both Lotus 49 and 79 use H-Pattern gear boxes. As does The Ferrari 312T in AC. Most older F1 cars use h-pattern gear boxes
I wonder if I could hard mount this to the shifter plate on my GT Omega Pro...hmmm
can you throw the shift knob at someone in order to "end them rightly"?
Hi guys great review. Perhaps the 7th gear is not just for cars that use a 7th gear but it gives you the option of having the reverse on either side of this shifter. Just a thought.

Can i use this kind of "extra" things with a g27? :)
I'm using it now with my G25, but you have to buy $19 usb adapter.

atheosxgaming I'm using it with PC. I believe you have to have the CSW base for PS3 to use the shifter but I don't wanna state that for sure.

Can I use this shifter with Logitech G29 on the PS4?
No. On PS4 it must be plugged into a Fanatec wheel base.
I play Dirt Rally a lot, can this baby use as handbrake?

Would this shifter work on a fanatec csr wheel ?
Porsche may have a 7 speed H pattern but who has the Porsche license? EA? Does Need for Speed have clutch support?
Hi inside sim racing i asked santa for a thrustmaster tmx xbox one wheel just wondering if this shifter would be compatible with it
Thomas gave up on Xboxone so therefore I gave up on Fanatec. Secondly, why is this shifter so damn big? Its huge compared to it competitors

That's closed cell foam, Darin, not Styro.
The escort in DiRT Rally is 7 gears

will it work properly with the xbox 360 fanatec csr

We will if they send us one. I've asked Leo at GT Omega a few days ago if we could review one and have yet to hear back from him.

Good review, great :)

Looks awesome!
Too expensive, plus not all accessories are included.
the new 2014 corvette stingray is a 7 speed manual
We found out a recent 911 Porsche is too after filming this :-)
Are there also mounting points on the right side to allow you to mount it on your left?
Yes, there are two slots on each side to insert the nuts.
Thanks :-)

no.. Unless there's an adapter that would allow it.
Ok thanks
Inside Sim Racing I have waited aeons for this review, thanks a lot :)

If it isn't mentioned, Bugatti Veyron uses 7 speed, at least it does in Forza.
Not a manual H-pattern tho..
It's an automatic? Well, the more I know. ;P
Marius Modalen Most supercars use Dual Clutch Transmissions. Basically a manual transmission but still auto. Search for it and youll see ;)
Porsche panamera has a 7 manual

Wrong about the price costs 260 euro
Every single v12 swapped racing transmission car in forza
porsche 911 has a 7 speed so does the c7
New 7 speed porsche use this H pattern
I could sell my Xbox and all my games then buy a ps3 and gt6, then with the $200 this shifter cost...buy a g27...
Pricey pricey Fanatec

For the money I expect no cons.
991 Gen Porsche 911s use a seven speed manual 'box
its so loud it is borderline unusable for me. If I even THINK about changing gear on it then next door's baby starts crying
