I could listen to Sam have these solo talks forever. There’s a level of clarity in his diction that is hard to find elsewhere. It’s not that he’s using big words. It’s that his choices of words are so sharp, the meaning of what he is saying comes to in full clarity.

My father died last week. While I was sitting at his side during the last hours, I was using my mindfulness practice to "stay in the moment" and "be present". I think that if I hadn't known how to do that or *why* I should do that, I would have disconnected from the experience and withdrawn into myself. But instead I was able to be present for my family. I also think the whole process left me with a lot less trauma than would have otherwise been the case, since I didn't have regrets or second thoughts afterwards. I have felt no need to re-examine the event in my thoughts, because I examined it while living it. It doesn't make it easier in the moment, but mindfulness at least allows you to not lose yourself in those moments.

Incredible. After using the app for 14 months, the benefits are immense. The app has taught me not to be afraid of imperanence, but rather to recognize the incredible freedom that comes with the transistory nature of experience. We think of thoughts (especially the negative ones) as having a type of superpower that has the potential to ruin our day, only to realise that once we pay sufficent attention to their nature, their structure is inherently superficial.

    • @Bradley_UA
      @Bradley_UA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Mike Kane I mean... Theres still objective difference between whatever we call "you" and whatever we call "universe". As a matter of first person experience I am whatever I am experiencing which is the universe. But the image that I have in my consciousness is t the real universe. In physical terms I'm trapped inside my.own brain, never to leave it. And what Allan what's says about "we are the universe" is the first person statement it has nothing to do with physical universe or chemicals. It may make you feel more.united with the universe, but to do that is to miss the point of breaking the illusion of "self".
It's the same way as trying to come up with a way to think of a turd being "the universe". Sure it's part of the universe, but if you're just going to say that that's what it means to be the universe, then you completely missed the whole point of literally.everything Sam Harris and others are saying about the feeling that you call "I" and why it's a good idea to understand it.

Life has fiat value; it is worthwhile because collectively we believe it to be. If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide please get help. If you understand the value of life look into stoicism. I understand the fundamental tenant of stoicism to be that one can always make their situation better when faced with challenges. If you absolutely cannot figure out a way suicide is an option. Nice talk. Always appreciate Sam's content. Many great minds came across the difference between the concept of a thing and the actual thing whether scientists, philosophers, artists or whatever. The painting the Treachery of Images with the famous "this is not a pipe" quote, while also Richard Feynman, Alan Watts, Terence Mckenna are just a few examples.
    Richard Feynman:
"I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something"
Terence McKenna with his magnificent eloquent style:
"Culture replaces authentic feeling with words. As an example of this, imagine an infant lying in its cradle, and the window is open, and into the room comes something, marvelous, mysterious, glittering, shedding light of many colors, movement, sound, a transformative hierophany of integrated perception and the child is enthralled and then the mother comes into the room and she says to the child, “that’s a bird, baby, that’s a bird,” instantly the complex wave of the angel peacock iridescent trans-formative mystery is collapsed, into the word. All mystery is gone, the child learns this is a bird, this is a bird, and by the time we’re five or six years old all the mystery of reality has been carefully tiled over with words. This is a bird, this is a house, this is the sky, and we seal ourselves in within a linguistic shell of dis-empowered perception. "

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 In the vast universe, we find ourselves on Earth, where complex life has evolved over billions of years.
00:13 Human brains and bodies have evolved through millions of generations, from strange animals to single-celled organisms.
00:41 We live in a unique time in history where we can understand our existence in a universal sense, transcending language and geography.
01:09 The mystery of existence persists, regardless of the knowledge and beliefs we hold.
02:44 Pay attention to your sensory experience, and you'll find that the nature of objects is a profound mystery when stripped of concepts.
03:41 No amount of scientific explanation can dispel the mystery of the direct experience of an object.
05:46 Excessive thinking can hinder understanding and experiencing the present moment, much like the parable of the poisoned arrow.
06:45 The purpose of meditation is to radically transform your sense of self and your understanding of life.
08:34 Waking up is not just about reducing stress but confronting deep questions about happiness and the impermanence of life.
09:42 Sam Harris built the Waking Up app to help people realize profound insights about their minds and integrate these insights into a commitment to improving the world.

I feel like many of our thought leaders today will highly benefit from meditation. They are constantly asking questions about the world and their focus is being shifted based on current events. Meditation hopefully will set them back on the right track and once again makes them focus on the more important questions rather than engage in conflict of the current events. This will benefit not only themselves but the people that look to them for guidance.

Dear Mr. Harris, I am so thrilled to have learned that what I experienced as a child and continued to play with throughout adulthood is shared with humans. I have spoken to a handful of other people throughout my life who expressed surprise and concern about what is called by Mr Harding the headless way.. Some even advised me not to continue invoking it out of the fear for my sanity.
I have to say that I particularly liked the fact that you described it as a fleeting few second state that is hard to maintain. However the way I arrived at it when I was about 6 or 7 yeas old was by trying to imagine the concept of infinity of the universe in the physical sense. This experience was in fact scary the first few times as I would struggle to find self and would immediately cling to some worldly objects to bring 'me' back. But then I mustered up more courage and stayed with it longer.
I just started listening to the waking up app a few days ago and am marveling at the various descriptions of this experience by you and Douglas Harding. Being as impatient as I am, I'm eager to see what's next and how this state can be helpful for the psyche. But having discovered it on my own, I also would like to leave this for 'me' to discover... I am divided. Please advise.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom in the app, podcast and here on youtube. These are simply gems!

We have become too accustomed to automation. Meditation is a direct decision to interface with consciousness. When we are doing a task and we get in the zone, we are able to glimpse that realm of consciousness for a brief moment, however meditation is the only way that I know of where one can truly observe in a direct manner the mystery of consciousness. What a gift to become present, and wake up. Thank you Sam for all your valuable insights.

They tell you, "You are not free; you are constrained by the chemistry of your brain. You are just a neural machine." Yet, some of them advise you to embrace life, overcome challenges, strengthen your personality, and build psychological resilience. Isn't that a huge contradiction? If my brain is the one controlling all this, then why give me advice, since neural determinism is supposedly responsible for achieving these outcomes?
However, we often lean toward feeling enthusiasm and strength as a result of applying such ideas in our minds, which clearly indicates the existence-and power-of human will. But we tend to forget to logically analyze the contradiction in such claims, like those made by Sam Harris. He says, "You are just a machine," implying that there is no "you" in reality, and yet he tells you to follow certain advice. Isn't my application of such advice proof of my will to change my perspective and thoughts about matters? Isn't my interaction with life’s events with happiness, strength, and joy evidence of my free will? Or does merely recalling something involuntarily mean the absence of free will? That’s a shallow philosophical absurdity.
The speed at which we make daily decisions and analyze situations within our minds makes people like Harris imagine that our brains are solely responsible for everything. But in reality, you are the one exercising your freedom and will through your brain. Reflect on this: the speed of analyzing scenarios when you want to make a decision or the rapid transition from one idea to another within your mind does not indicate the absence of "you." Instead, it reflects the precision of our minds. It is you, acting with will, who makes those transitions.
Of course, you will exercise your freedom in what you experience and learn. So, don’t ask, "Why did that image come to my mind and not another?" and conclude, "It wasn’t me who chose." That’s nonsense.

The first half of this talk reminds of Derrida's work in 'Of Grammatology'. Words like blue, red, roses, etc invoke in us a concept of the thing we are describing. Concepts can be far away from the actual meaning of the thing we are describing. This is where Derrida originally brought in the idea of a post structuralist interpretation unique to all things & individuals.
Sam talking about our inability to hint at the word 'blue' beyond the thoughts of it's perception & physical charecteristics is an important reminder of the illusion that the meaning of a word has. The word's origin in the structure of reality and at the same time making that truth part of that structure seem directly present to the mind are somehow nearly impossible to convey!

@Butthead You've ridiculed a couple of posts here, and you might just be trolling (given your avatar) but what's the issue? Why are you so resistant to these ideas do you believe them to be silly or untrue or do they affect you another way?

@@Ailandscapes Mind / society is playing trick on you, its the mind / society which created a meaning to life and then the same mind says there is no meaning to life. My choice of meditation is Transcendental Meditation. I've found other meditations - midfulness, Zen, counting breaths or whatever are so boring to do, take quite a bit of effort that I end up ending the practice. Transcendental Meditation is pleasant to do, take no effort, isn't about stopping thoughts or using will power or discipline in any way.
I think we force ourselves to go to work, get up, work hard, make the grade, do this, do that. I like a meditation that steps outside of that forceful arena, doesn't try and get you somewhere. From the day you start you are as good at it as you will ever be. No working towards a goal, trying hard to be better.

There are many methods going back thousands of years, enabling people to tap into the realm of the Transcendental Absolute, Pure Consciousness "In-Itself", or Sat-Chit-Ananda (Truth-Consciousness-Bliss). SH uses techniques that evolved within the Vipassana branch of Theravada Buddhism, one component of which is keeping your attention on one's breath. Another approach is Hatha yoga, and another, mantra yoga. No problem. Access "Mahamritunjaya mantra - Sacred Sounds Choir" and listen to it for 5 min per day for at least two weeks.

Sam, this is truly of great import, and while I have heard of your history with meditation, you sound like a great teacher might sound- and soothing, almost hypnotic voice. I'll get the app and experiment a bit.
My formerly enjoyed creativity has gone on an extensive hiatus, so I could use the direction towards reintegrating (perhaps understanding its departure?) whatever needs to be acknowledged, owned, and potentially lived.
    A prayer, that last statement.
Bless each of you on your respective journeys.
