There is not just an intake gasket. There are also short metal tubes that go between the intake manifold and the head. If you don’t have those in there, it will never run right. As long as you are going this far, you may as well take the head off, and make sure no valves are burnt, replace the valve seals (umbrellas), and at least make a rough check of the valve springs, and maybe lap the valves. The GMC’s usually had better, more up to date engines. Mine used some oil, but didn’t leave clouds of blue smoke behind, and it was definitely well worn. Mine had a radio, but no spot light. I believe the spot light was owner or dealer installed. The original seat was grey. Best wishes and take care.

I own of these that got parked in the 70s at the latest 20 years ago my dad and grandpa get the engine running and they haven’t touched it since I’ve been soaking the thing in oil for a couple weeks in preparation of starting it just to help prevent this at $425 for a set of rocker arms it’s definitely worth your time to be prepared

Beautiful truck except for the rims. Way ahead of its time! But thanks for the video. I have a 53 Chevy 3100 with an upgraded 235 cubic inch engine. Very similar. Thanks for the good info!

I've seen spark plugs that were modified and you could put a air hose on the end of the plug and it would pressurize the cylinder to keep the valve at the top so you could remove the keepers and install new valve guide seals... I don't know if you could buy one of these at an auto parts store or modify your own.. if you had a lathe you could easily make one...

This would have had a 3 speed shifter on the column. No directionals , no interior mirror, only one tail light/break light. They didn't come with that silly spot light either.

Granny 4 speed was optional on 1/2 and 3/4 ton, so it may have come that way. I had a 53 3100 that was original 4 speed many years ago. It certainly didn't come with the goofy trailer style wheels LOL.

Just bought a '53 3600 for a restoration project and as a training device for all the associated skills. One part I'm having a difficult time sourcing is a decent set of 8-lug wheels. Any idea what the white set used on this build are? I've yet to come across any that look like this.

I have a 52 Chevy 3/4 ton, originally had 15 in 8 lug split rims, I switched out for 16 and a half inch with spacers on the front to clear the steering linkage, I found them on Craigslist only four of them, so my spare is still 15 in (in the free ads), today I'm running nice new highway tread.

I like those white rims as well. Not stock of course but not too radical as well.

I switched to Ford rims. 16 inch. This gave front steering linkage clearance. 7.50x16 tires. Chevrolet rims wouldn’t fit because of the offset. This was a long time ago. Now it may be worth your while to check out some of the 17 inch wheels and tires from new trucks. 3800’s came with 17 inch wheels. The trick is to find wheels with the right offset that have a center hole that fit on the rear and are not to wide for the fenders. There are many choices these days. Happy hunting and take care.

These were never long beds or short beds. Just 3100 and 3600. 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton and so on.

5-windows are not "rare". They are just not as common. We have two of them, a 1-ton dually and a 3/4 ton.
