- Part 1 of the ongoing story of a 1949 Chevrolet 3100 pickup farm truck that was parked in the dry and sat for 43 years, it's recovery and various repairs and modifications to get it back on the road. It's the proverbial barn find.
Part 2 starts the engine swap series when the 216 is removed and replaced with the freshly rebuilt & hopped up 235/244, includes the removing and reinstalling the entire front clip. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

I love these simpler rebuilds. I’ve never been a big fan of frame off restorations. There’s something special about driving an old truck that looks like an old truck. Beautiful truck you have there. Thanks for sharing this video and good luck.

Great job! I too found a 49 sitting in a barn that was just recently moved. Pretty much same story but mines a GMC 3/4 ton and when it went in the barn it was basically 90% disassembled and in boxes. So i guess mine was a “basket case barn find”. I put it all back together as stock with the only exception being i put a newer 5.3 engine in it mated to stock trans and its 12v now and has radials on period correct wheels with the stock GMC hub caps. I have been driving mine everywhere. I absolutely love it! Such a fun cruiser and errand truck and its just like turning back the hands of time cruising old country backroads and driving through farmland.
Probably the best ytube post ive seen in a long time. took me back to growing up on the farm in the early seventies. We had one for a farm truck and I would use it to go to town. even then it was cool . very jealous, enjoy.

Nice old pickup, doing the same thing with my 47 3100. I enjoy being able to drive it while working on the little things. We use it for hauling straw and harrowing the horse pasture. The kids even used it for a prop at a 4-H fundraiser. Love the videos good luck with your truck.

I enjoyed your video very much. I've been restoring my 48 Chevy 3100 1/2 ton truck. I had the original 216 straight six rebuilt and I'm still running the 6 VDC generator, three on the tree shifter and drum brakes all around. Other than the modern GMC Red Jewel Sonoma Metallic Base Coat, Clear Coat paint on the exterior my truck is mostly all original. I like the fact that you've decided to keep the period correct in line six cylinder motor. I love the old stovebolt engines and large steering wheel and just the way that these old trucks shift and drive! These old trucks have personality. You don't see too many owners that go out of their way to keep the original running gear. Job well done!

Nice! I used to own one just like it, a 48' and I blew the poor old 216 babbit bearing motor going down a hill in Ala at about 70. Ended up getting a 57' 235 that fit like a glove and would smoke the tires, it ran like a beast! I sure miss that Chevy truck! Yours is super nice! Love the chrome grill!

Awesome truck. Well worth the time and effort necessary to make it nice I'd say. I finished a 1953 3100 five window after 20 years of on and off effort. It now runs a 261 cu. in full pressure six with fenton headers, offenhauser dual one barrel carbs and a saginaw four speed. Such a pleasure to drive and rewarding after so much work. Good luck and stay with it. If you need any parts let me know, I might have one or two laying around.

Use a different vacuum port for your wipers. You’ll contaminate that line with oil vapor from your pcv line.
Use one grade higher oil viscosity to bump up your low oil pressure.

Congrats on the find, and I was your 100th subscriber too. I just posted a video of converting my ‘49 to twelve volts. She runs good, although I believe a couple valves may need to be serviced from ticking and overall noise. I put some Lucas oil treatment in, and that seemed to quiet them somewhat.
Nice truck, good work with all the engine stuff. I've got a 51, 1 Ton farm truck and am enjoying the heck out of it. Cracked head on the original engine forced me to find a 58 stovebolt 6 to install but it till runs the same.. Good luck with the future fettles.

I'm building a model of a 1950 3100. Trying to decide what color to paint it, and whether I should wire the engine.... I understand why you wanted a "like-new" paint job, but I wanna go with a "weathered original patina". THANK-YOU for keeping the old trucks rollin'!....

@@Volfandt You're welcome! I also "liked" and subscribed, to help your channel. I'm a retired bicycle mechanic, and used to rebuild old bicycles, so I appreciate what you're doing here. Much of the tools, oils, etc., are the same idea on a much simpler machine.
With all the space-age computer tech, high tech, etc., I'm glad to see people keeping the old stuff around, too. We need BOTH old and new! And there's a lot of kids with their face stuck in a screen, who could really benefit from some time with some "ancient technology"! The old trucks had a style, and design that's missing today, I think.....

Nice,,,I'm building a 45 dodge pickup myself,,, but it was in disassembled condition,,no engine and transmission,, mine will look older but with all the new stuff.
Nice video. I also have a 1949 Chevy 3100. I found mine out in Kansas. I live in southern middle Tennessee just between Chattanooga and Nashville off I-24. Mine has been restored a while ago and then someone didn't take good care of it. It has a 235 from a 1954 Chevy Belaire. I'm currently reworking the brakes on mine.
Darrell, I used to get around your area quite a bit back in the day. Tullahoma, South Pittsburg, Shelbyville, etc. I used to service Chatt but would get sent up I-24 since I was in the area, sometimes even to Murfreesborro and Nashville. Made for some long days, LOL. Beautiful drive tho. That 54 235 is a great engine for your truck and if the Belaire had an automatic you more than likely have hydraulic lifters. I bought a dead 54 235 and rebuilt it some years back and did a series on the rebuild and installing it in my 49. You may want to check them out.

Thanks Morgan. Other than being worn out, that 216 ran surprisingly good. I don't know about courage, perhaps not having enough cents to fill that small watch pocket in a pr of jeans fits better, LOL.
If a person finds the rite machine shop , a 216 can be converted into a insert instead of the babbit rods , they'd hold up like a built 235 then

Thanks Raffaro. You also may have noticed I didn't drill any holes in the dash for the tach, It's mounted via a magnet which holds it in place. It rarely moves but is easily put back if it does. I definitely don't want to mar any of the good metal in this truck.

Just overhaul the 216.The head is already done. Put in mains, rods an rings.You can do it in the truck. These old stove Bolt sixes are dirt simple.

Thanks Pappa Bob. The engine is a 54 235 bored out 0.060" which = 244ci. I was very lucky that this truck was stored in the dry. Disregarding the dents and paint it's in better shape than my 49 GMC.
I intend to keep this truck as period correct as possible. I'd like my grandson's to know how a truck drove in 1949.
Looking forward for the next video. Just think the vast majority of people in this country wouldn't know how to start it, shift it or probably even roll the windows down. Lol
Thats true. After running it a couple hundred miles I took it to an oil change place for kicks. The tech wanted to start it up after changing the oil and couldn't figure it out. They had me come out to the bay to show them how LOL.

I plan on staying 6V with the 216, as originally configured as possible.
What turn signals did you use?

Thanks Al. I got the turn signal kit and most of my other parts from Classic Truck Parts. www.classicparts.com/
Get the 7 wire version and the 6 volt flasher. If you plan on running LED lights get the solid state flasher. It's not hard to wireup and you only have to run 1 additional wire to the back and another to the front. Turn signals were an option back in 49 as most states didn't require them.

I would have stayed 6V had I kept the 216 in. I had no problems with 6V electrics and I ran day and night all year long.
re. Turn sigs, I got the kit from Classic Truck Parts . I also got the 6v lamps from them also. They generally carry a good stock of quality parts. You'll have to run an additional wire to the back and 2 wires to the front. Change the lamp recepticles to dual element bulbs and you're all set.

I had a '53 3600 (3/4 ton) in considerably worse shape than that that I got in trade for 1.5 days work back in the 70s. It's hard to be a fan of the 216 engine with the low oil pressure. I'd of course drive it as you can since you paid to get the head done, but if that engine truly blows up, I'd get a more modern 235 or something bigger, still staying with a 6'er. Oh, by the way, the cab will NEVER get quieter, LOL.

I wonder what weight of oil you decided to use??? A little heavier oil might bring up the pressure.Great truck!I purchased one for $50.00 around 1968 and really liked it.Wish I still had it.
I was running 15w40. I tried 20w50 but it didn't make any noticable change. The bottom end had well over 100k miles on it, it was ready for a rebuild.

Thought all along some of that engine clatter was from low oil pressure. I don't know what spec was for that "stovebolt" but slightly newer ones in the sedans had much more than 14 cold. Bet a new bottom end brings that up a bit! Sad to hear the Ghia had to go. I got my first license in my Dad's new '62 Ghia. Good memories of Ghias. Sadly the PA/OH "rust belt" led to its demise around early 70s.
In the cold of winter with 15w40 oil it would nearly hit 30 psi then gradually drop as it warmed to it's normal 15 psi. I ran it like that for nearly 7 yrs and 23K miles... In later video's I discuss where I dropped the pan & found where the shims were already removed plus it had so much blowby I knew the rings were also shot so it would have needed a total rebuild instead of just main bearing replacement. So I made the decision to pull it before I ruined it and replace it with something with mo' pwr'. I'm keeping the 216 for a future rebuild .

Did yours have any paint on the glove box door, I have a 1950 , the door was missing so I got one off another truck. It was stainless steel and I was wondering if the small ribs should be painted?
I looked back at the pics I took when I 1st got it in it's original state and on both the glovebox door and speaker grill the raised ribs were stainless and the recesses between the ribs were painted to match the interior. They were so corroded, faded and chipped that I decided to paint the entire surface except the upper and lower trim pieces.

Doesn't surprise me a bit that the old 216 would run again.

@@nickpanhead7209 Sorry NIck, looks like I didn't pay any attention to the yr of your truck. The VLog I linked probably won't help you. I want to think that you can loosen the bottom of the window/vent window track and move it aside enough to get the window out but I not sure. Good luck.

Your speedo cable needs a little lube. It will run steady after that.
My thoughts exactly ... that's a pretty nervous speedometer. Just unscrew the cable from behind the instrument & drip in a few drops of motor oil.

Good question, I'm not sure as I found the jack in this one back in the bed. Theres plenty of romm under the seat and it's very easy to pop the seat bottom off so I'll guess that may have been where they stowed the jack and tire iron. Thanks for watching.

Is there anyway to install a tachometer on these? I can’t seem to find mechanical tachometers that would be able to be put into the existing system
Yes, theres basically 2 ways to add a tach on a 6v truck. Buy and install a 6v tach which can be expensive or add a 6v to 12v converter circuit and install an inexpensive 12v tach, which is what I did. The converter ran about $25 on Amazon and the 12v tachanother $30 which was alot cheaper than a 6v tach.
It's not hard to do. If your truck is already 12v just install a 12v tach.

Volfandt oh ok. I already have a converter for the original gas gauge, do you think if I tap it into that it would work?
And yeah, everything is now 12 volts except the original gas gauge, there’s a reducer on there for that
@@wallyworksonstuff343 If your truck is already converted to 12v, just connect a new 12v tach to a fused & switched 12v source. When I say a switched 12v source I'm meaning one that is only "hot" with the key on. An easy place to pickup a switched 12v source is off of the coil

Please do not convert it to 12V , keep the the original 6V system
Well, if you continue to watch this 15 part series, you'll see that I did convert to 12v but rest assured it can be easily converted back to 6v when the 216 is rebuilt and reinstalled (sometime on down the road).

The 46-55 didn't change body styles until mid '55 for Chevrolet & GMC trucks. So a '55 truck can certainly be one of the ugly ones

Stay away from the hallucinogens, 55 was the new body style that didn't change until 58, they look nothing like the 46-54. Now same year cornbinders or studes are a different story, uglier than homemade sin!!
