I'm off-grid this weekend camping in the mountains, so I won't be able to reply to any comments until early next week. Hopefully coming home with a new video or two for you. :-)
If you add to the roof rack make sure you pay attention to the load limits. They can vary on and off road. Ronny Dahl with 4wheeling Australia does a good video on that.
Dude, I hope no one is giving you grief about the build-out videos. If they are please ignore them. Your information is appreciated and as enjoyable as your Forester overlanding videos.
"It's not sexy overland gear." See this is why I prefer this channel compared to all others! Build like this, your subaru and my RD1 CR-V have seen more fs roads than half the tacoma's in the PNW !
Totally agree! These videos are super helpful and enjoyable, what is being used in people's vehicles, what kind of stuff they install, what they were thinking when they decided to modify something..
Dude, people complaining about your 'garage videos' need to chill. You're doing great with all that you have going on. Live your life and take care of yourself. Many of us aren't going anywhere because we like what you do.
I will admit, it's fun going at this with the experience I gained on the Forester. The Forester was a very gradual process starting from having zero experience off-road or overlanding or really even modding any vehicle in any way, so I really fumbled my way along over the course of years. It's been nice being able to look at this truck with a much clearer vision from the get-go. Thanks for watching!
I'm not weary of the garage videos at all, Donald. You're doing an amazing job and I'm excited for you for your new build. I'm digging the Frontier so far and I'm looking forward to your new content as usual.
I come from a long line of farmers. "It's not sexy but it gets the job done" is the standard I operate under like my father and his father and his father before me. 😆 The garage videos are great; weather in Oregon this time of year is always on the verge of getting really annoying anyway. Always up for a build video.
Man I love your unpretentious attitude about your rig and gear. Your Subaru was fantastic and seeing this truck get dialed in is great. Unlike many of those "overlanders" with maxed-out credit cards you get what you need and get out there and actually do it. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Being a fellow Fronty owner I'm keeping an especially keen eye on your garage/build videos. Not having the same aftermarket support means more diy is required and you come up with some good ideas.
The garage videos are just as much a part of the adventure as the getting out there part. The drawers look good. Simple, cheap, and easy, cant get much better.
“It’s not sexy overland gear” I love it Donald! That’s one of the things that brought me to the channel and it’s one of the big things that keeps me here. You’re right, it gets the job done! I’m enjoying your garage videos because I know it’s part of the process. Don’t rush it now. Thanks for your hard work!
Dude,, anyone who is impatient can Scratch🤌. Its a fact of life, nothing is instantaneous and we are all working on a budget. Great job and keep on keeping on! 👍
These garage videos are actually paying off for me more now that you got a Frontier. Just don’t try to rush or think that everything is going to be permanent, you know how it is, you take a trip and realize that you need to change stuff anyways so enjoy the journey and the mods.
Indeed. I'm pretty sure this initial stab at it will come back apart for some re-engineering, plus I'd like to actually paint it so it's not so DIY raw-wood looking. :-) I did want to get it more or less functional to see how it worked out for this weekend's trip (and pretty happy overall, might just need a few tweaks).
I love that you keep on going with well thought budget solutions. Keep it going! By the way, I love the garage-online videos as well. No need to excuse, I like being part of the "whats next, how is it planned etc." Damn, I need a private workshop ... :D
Donald, what I have always appreciated about your content is the practical nature and budget consciousness. I have a 2018 Crosstrek (another small, slightly less capable vehicle) that is fun to adapt to my planned needs for softroading. I have adopted some of the ideas from your mods and from other Crosstrek specific content generators. No matter what you drive, the spirit of adventure and adaptation is clear and exciting. I have considered a 40% delete for my newly acquired 35qt refrigerator and Jackery 500. As a daily driver, I also don't want to loose any basic function. Nice to see a great example of this in practice. Thanks for sharing!
Great mod, well done. Solid and functional. Glad to hear you mention securing things in case of an accident. Don't apologize for living your life. We love the build videos and the overlanding, but there is zero question that taking care of your family and working (which is also taking care of your family) is top priority.
I don’t do camping in my truck just use it for work but I used your seat removal idea to make more organized space for my work gear and my brand new jackery explorer 300!
Keep 'em coming....love these garage videos because it's fun to see the direction you're going to take. Good times when you finally get out there. Happy trails!
Really loving seeing the build come along. I have always been impressed with your thoughtful inexpensive but very functional upgrades. I have long said that the best money spent is on adventure gas and I love that you take that seriously by making upgrades that make the adventure better without leaving no room for fun adventures in the budget.
At least the build worked out. I think removing part of the back seat was a good idea. The storage space is pretty good. Many of the truck manufacturers don’t think too much about rear seat storage. They only think of passengers. My 2016 Colorado extended cab is a prime example. The rear seats are in the way and you don’t really gain anything if you remove them. I ended up putting a platform on them to give me a flat storage area.
Looks good! Usually most people with "sexy" overland gear are the ones that rarely use them. The DIY guys are the ones that get more use out of the gear they install in the rigs!
Jason from Maryland here. I like the build. I don't mind the garage builds. Since you had the Forester as a learning start, these are just "to-do's" to the new rig that you saw useful the first time. Cheers 🍻 and carry on! Also, I think custom drawers out the side interfere with the door panels, thus 'pockets' are a better fit, save the drawers for out the back.
I found this channel after I bought a 2020 Forester. You have given me a lot of great ideas about gear and places to go. Since my Forester is my daily driver and I do not want to do heavy mods on it I was already looking at older Nissans as they are affordable before you bought this truck. I am looking forward to seeing your build and your future travels.
Sexy overland gear is not on my list either; whatever works...works! I just bought a '19 GMC Savanna 2500 cargo van and have started my camper conversion. I'll be shopping at Goodwill quite a bit to convert old furniture pieces for my storage units. That was a great idea to remove the rear seat for a storage area. Looking great, Don!
We enjoy your garage videos very much. These are just as helpful for sharing ideas and often influence our own improvements. I like to tinker so these are just as cool. Keep doing what you’re doing. Can’t wait to see the Nissan evolve. We enjoyed watching your forester adapt. Loving it!
I absolutely hated to see the Subaru go but am glad you're back and am enjoying your new " builds " and stories with your new vehicle... even if it isn't a Subaru.
Great start. Move at the speed of safe and at your pace. We use our eyes to watch you have to do all the work... The waiting makes each mew update that much sweater. Thanks for sharing your new build.
KUDOS for another great share and video! Brilliant use of space, and your insight and build have already shown how well thought out it is! Thanks MUCH and enjoy your new adventures oand build progress! Cheers! :)
Looks really nice, your Nissan will be a great overlander for you, and I - like many others - will enjoy your adventures and videos of those trips. Because of your review and experience of Jackery I bought Jackery Explore 500 last Autumn, and just now I bought the Jackery SolarSaga 100. Many thanks for your excellent channel!
I’m new to the PNW, glad I found your channel! Hopefully will see you on the trail someday! Just finished up my new overland build. If you need any help building out the truck or sourcing parts let me know!! Keep up the great work!
Nice idea! Dont apologize for the "garage videos". Personally, I prefer to see others ideas, builds and set-ups on video with snipets of the adventures they take. I'd much rather see the adventures thru my own eyes. Good luck with this new build
It may not be sexy overlanding gear, but if it works, it’s lighter, it’s cheaper, and it has less wasted space. I like it! I deleted the rear seat out of my ‘90 4runner and I usually leave the Crosstrek rear seat down for storage too.
I can't wait to see what happens next. Take the time to get it right for your needs. You have a great base for your rides. I envy you, in the US, that you can so easily go off-roading in the middle of your natural areas and camp there.
Don’t rush your build Donald. Figure out what works for you and continue to make improvements and modifications. It’s gonna be a great rig when it’s all said and done.
I saw your video on the accident-damaged Forrester. What a huge letdown it must have been for you after all the work you put into it. But, there is a new chapter now with a Nissan Frontier and I'm looking forward to following along.
Getting to it! Nice work with minimal supplies; good for the average Joe. I dig the DIY/garage videos (in general), there's always something to take away from them.
Function over fancy all day long! I enjoy the videos...even the garage content...it'll be better for your rig to be as functional as possible so you can enjoy yor trips...then your best will go into the episodes. We can wait for that! Thanks for sharing.
The back seat storage solution is a good start for staging your gear. Get yourself a quart of Duplicolor Hurculiner and paint that over the exposed wood. Maybe also run a router around the edge of the plywood before applying the Hurculiner to smooth out the edge a bit. It will look more like Goose Gear, and less like a quick shop project. I don't work with wood often as I suck at it. I tend to stick to metal projects, but the routered edge and Hurculiner made my backseat fridge platform look factory installed.
I thought about painting this but was trying to get it functional in time for going out this weekend and ran out of time. And ultimately I'm nearly certain I'm going to take it back apart and re-engineer a few details. At that point I'll finish it off better. I would indeed rather have it a little more polished looking since the rest of the truck interior is so nice. :-)
@@softroadingthewest I hear ya. Tweak it till it works the way you want it, and then give a few coats of Hurculiner and you won't even know its made if wood. The stuff is water based for easy cleanup and dries fast outside in the sun or breeze.
Looks good, I did a 60% delete on my Frontier, since I have a much larger fridge and battery/inverter/charger setup. Definitely doesn't leave a very roomy seat for a passenger though.
Excellent thinking and execution! No need to apologize for this content. It provides food for thought. For example, an emergency IPA should be standard issue. 😁
It is what - a second garage video after a trail video? So nothing to be grown tired about really at that rate for us the viewers. Personally overall I do prefer trail videos but I find these ones about the development of Your rig also interesting and I know that You will be out there soon enough!
Great video Donald as usual brother! Don't sell y'all self short brother. Not everyone is a carpenter, but y'all still did a great job building out Y'all's truck! Looking forward to more of y'all's video's and advantures!👍
Donald you should have taken out the larger seat, it would have given you more room for storage. Lucy would have been fine sitting in the little toddler seat. 😲🙄 Tell Lucy sorry, I couldn't help myself. LOL! Your overlanding videos are awesome but I also like your DIY videos also. Good video, keep up the good work. 👍🏻
Nice job! Looks totally functional. Last month, I removed my entire back seat from my Tundra and built a platform with cubbies to keep my stuff. Mine isn't "sexy overlander gear" either. But the "sexy overlander gear" is mostly gay ... not that there's anything wrong with that.
If Lucie stays true to form she will find something to complain about....the fridge will block her view for one... and it opens from the wrong direction lol...Can't wait to see the new build out in the field in use!
Your Forester pack job around Lucy is impressive! I imagine that was 3 people's worth of gear. Your roof rack setup looks a bit lopsided, weight wise (if you put heavy items in your roof box). Rony Dahl did a roof rack 'oops' video and goes into why you might consider symmetrically spreading out the weight on your roof. It also talks about roof ratings and roof rack 'offroad' ratings. On my long distance trip, I had a water tube on one side of my rack (opposite the driver for weight distribution of the car, but lopsided for weight distribution on the rack), but didn't fill it up until right before bivouac. You may have already considered this, though.
The cases are actually pretty small and will just be for some relatively lightweight gear (snatch strap, tarp, bungee cords, etc...little bits and pieces I need to have with me but don't regularly need to access). The fuel roughly down the middle is by far the heaviest element and I think should keep it quite balanced where it's at.
One of the first items to be removed from my extended cab Frontier was the relatively useless back seats. More room for the dog and smaller items like a tool or camera bag. Things you want to be more secure.
It’s great use of space but here in Western Australia I was informed by a mechanic that removal of a seat requires an engineers certificate and relicencing as a 4 seat (down from 5). Luckily my box setup is removable and not normally in the car. Check your rules!
I'm off-grid this weekend camping in the mountains, so I won't be able to reply to any comments until early next week. Hopefully coming home with a new video or two for you. :-)
Awesome, have fun!
But you haven’t replied to any of my comments or my email for 2 weeks. 🤷♂️

I’m currently building a ladder rack tent system for my F250 because you inspire me, keep going brother I love the evolution of your channel.

I like these garage videos
I am enjoying the garage videos your giving me some great ideas
Thank you
I think you made the perfect choice in a replacement vehicle.. It was mine :-)
That’s great! I’m doing something similar in my vehicle as well to utilize more space. BTW, I don’t mind the garage videos.
It’s great use of space but here in Western Australia I was informed by a mechanic that removal of a seat requires an engineers certificate and relicencing as a 4 seat (down from 5). Luckily my box setup is removable and not normally in the car. Check your rules!
No such concerns here. If you saw some of the things people did to their vehicles here...oh man. What I've done is absolutely nothing at all. :-)
