Of all cars I have driven, the air cooled Porsches are my favorite. I feel so mechanically connected to the whole driving experience. Those are lovely cars.
Tedward, I don’t know how or why, but this black ‘88 911 of yours somehow just became my dream car. The look of it. The aesthetic. The mechanical sense of it. I haven’t had this happen in a long, long time - where I had an actual dream about a car, but after watching this car in one of your videos, i had a dream I was driving one and I know it was this car because if the orange wedge on the tachometer. The pure analog feel of this car is incredible. I wish I could see one in person and drive one. I truly wish to have my own some day.
I still need to drive an analog Porsche at some point. Every time I watch videos on them, I love the raw mechanical touch-to-power simplicity, in a tight compact package.
$40k to rebuild an engine that's a nearly 40 year old design is insane to me. I know it shouldn't be cheap, but I can't help but feel like enthusiasts are being taken advantage of.
As someone who’s worked along side someone rebuilding a g series engine at a third party shop it entirely depends on what’s being done, if it’s top end that’s way too much, if it’s a full tear down where all that is still original is the case.. you’d be surprised on parts cost alone.. Carrillo rod sets can go over 2 grand for just rods
A Custom Piston will set you back roughly 400€ a Piece, Connecting Rods about 100€ per and a Custom made Crank about 1500-2500€. A Custom Camshaft will set you back 100€ per Lobe, so 1200€ for these. Custom Valves are 80€, so about 1000€. 2400+600+2500+1200+1000 is about 8000€ in Parts if you build a complete Custom Engine. So even with labour, which is usually about 1500€ for a normal Engine, 10000€ seems more realistic.
i like hearing modern music but when it comes to older analog sports cars and supercars they are my fav bcoz they look nd drive way better than modern cars
I love the Quabin reservoir and know exactly where you parked. I rode my zx4rr up there several times this summer in the early morning. This region of Massachusetts has some excellent roads to drive on and I enjoy going up there from CT for some longer rides.
You might have explained this at some other point but what's with the sideways gauges? That would drive me nuts as someone with OCD....beautiful car though. Really wish I had your job. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Fellow New Englander here. I’m feeling the pain of a 964 engine rebuild right now. Damn mice have gotten into the space above the cooling fins, absolutely loaded it with nesting material, and it overheated. Hope to get it back before snow and salt season.
No wiring damage? Usually when rodents get in there they start chewing on random wires and it's a nightmare to even diagnose the problem, and then another happy time pulling the engine to replace the harness.
@@jgalt99Surprisingly, none. No evidence of mice in any way. The engine developed a piston slap sound when warm which was the only tip off to a problem.
the white 993 turbo is awesome looking. about german car gearbox when i had my 98 m3 from the place on marrett rd in lexington back in 06 i had them put a short throw didnt know it makes a metal to metal contact sound when you shift. gives less time for the gear to go in as well had it taken out. 911 m3's these cars are deff not meant to be driven the way mustang's are. also about turbo cars id take a 94 95 single turbo conversion rx7 over anything. my friend had one 12/95 that green blue color zero turbo lag man did we enjoy that car, 350 + whp.
You really shouldn't be nervous about your 3.2 -- that engine is bulletproof, esp. with only 90K miles. Mine has >150K and it's more reliable than my Toyota. And when rebuild time comes (in another 60K miles maybe), you'll probably just have to replace the valve guides, and there's no way that will cost $40K. Hell, you can do alot of the work yourself.
Ha, yeah that was what I thought four years ago when my 89’ Carrera with 85k miles started blowing smoke. Prob just needs new runners I thought. Famous last words. As we dug into the engine we found corrosion all over the inside. Camshafts, cylinders, timing chain, valves, etc. all ruined. Two of the heads even had to be replaced. This car was given a clean bill of health during a PPI by a reputable Porsche shop. Car was used very sparingly in the years before my ownership. Short trips low miles per year. The engines are wonders but they are maintenance hogs compared to modern cars. If you don’t keep up with them they can be frighteningly expensive to repair. They are reliable relative to other euro cars of the same era, but despite what the internet says, they are decidedly NOT “bulletproof.”
@@overbuiltlimited Yeah, you're right, you need to keep up with the maintenance if you want them to be reliable; they aren't forgiving if you let things go. So maybe bulletproof was the wrong word. And maybe I was lucky: I haven't had any problems in the 14 years I've had my car, and I've put over 40K miles on it. I suspect your remark that "Car was used very sparingly in the years before my ownership. Short trips low miles per year" was (paradoxically) the main factor in your experience. They don't like to sit or only short trips that are over before they get up to temp. Garage queens are reputed to have more problems with pulled head studs and premature valve guide wear.
@@susannero6401 Yeah that’s what we figured as well. The short trips caused condensation which just sat in the engine for months at a time, silently damaging the internals. The good news is that the engine has been completely rebuilt with ITB’s. It’s coil on plug now. Twin spark, etc. Very spicy. Did a little walk around and posted it a week or two ago. Semi related: I used to have two Ducatis. A highly modded Monster and a 996SPS. They were both dead reliable despite what you hear about the brand. My bikes had decent mileage for Ducs, 26k and 8k respectively. They were well maintained and ridden often. Makes me wonder about brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini. Maybe most of their owners just don’t drive them enough.
At about 7:30 you talk about relaxing a bit, chill and not try to rush a pass because you're anxious to get someplace faster. The results of failing to have that attitude can be seen in the recent deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. That is what happened. A car was in a rush to make a pass of a car that stopped ahead (to let the Gaudreau brothers cross I believe) ended up running into both of them on their bicycles and killing them. A completely needless tragedy. Folks -- calm down on the roads!
im 23 years old, born and living in brazil, and my ultimate dream is to have a 930 and drive in such a beautiful view like this, trying hard to get out from this shithole country to live up there, god bless you all
I've watched the temp rise but I've never seen it go too high. I've definitely turned it off because I was afraid to find out what happens next lol. But its fine.
@@TedwardDrivesprecisely. My brother is a nurse. His wife is a school teacher. He's owned numerous Miatas. Totally accessible price point, and the driving experience is incredible.
Miata’s are the best if you fit, you can buy better, or faster, or more comfortable. But nothing touches the connection of that car at the price point.
It's probably the gearbox and it is a little noisy with the whine in 4th and 5th gear. It could be because theres no insulation in the car. It could just be a noisy G50.
Glad to see it's not just me who's held up a phone in an old 911 so the driver can see GPS lol

Hey, not gonna lie, I love all the Porsche Carreras, a good and right car for a smooth riding experience, even driving in a serene roads.
Fall is the absolute best driving season. Had my 96 Miata in the mountains the other day enjoying the roads and the weather
This 911 is a gem. Tedward's mechanical life partner.

Definitely need to do a therapy drive of my own this weekend after this week...
A shoutout to the gentleman who takes care of the automobile babies out in the cold !
Thanks for the video, I have an 88 Targa and say it’s impossible to come back from a drive in it unhappy!
It was a great day! I look forward to our next event and it was interesting to meet and talk to you and the other members of Garage 42.
Air-cooled in the cool air
Thanks for the reminder to go for a drive in my air cooled car! Much needed automotive therapy - today of all days.

it was a fantastic drive. fantastic people and even better burgers. looking forward to the next event.
Need to take my S2000 out to the Quabbin before the weather gets too cold. These videos are always a pleasure to watch, thank you, Tedward.
gotta love the impreza driver for pulling over
Nice to meet you Tedward 😊

Great video, glad to see you do another drive of your 911!
Damn, that garage 42 place sounds awesome...wish i had something like that around me.
Totally agree about throttle control on these 911s. Sudden movements don't work here, the car demands a delicate touch
Beautiful day, and beautiful display of all of those cars. This is my favorite channel
Had a '75 911S Targa. The gauge cluster is timeless.
Your black 88 is the best looking of the bunch in my opinion.
Thank you! that's really kind
2:20, close C5 Galaxy going into Westover, they do have some C-17s coming in and out though!
Yep!
Love it, though you are stoking my engine rebuild fears 😮 - still, I love these drives!
Nice thoughts about traffic. I try to have the same outlook but sometimes it still frustrates me.

This way the rev limiter is being hit when the needle is straight up. It's a porsche racecar thing, you wouldn't understand ;)
99% sure I drove by you recording this haha, great video as always
9:12 No roof rack, so almost certainly a cop, lol. At least he was chill!
Good to see you drive your wonderful PORSCHE.
Just got back from driving my 83SC. Smelling the oil from my shirt while watching this. Good times.
classic video tedward. Always appreciate the content.

Cole has selvedge jeans, cool!
Was that the Enfield Lookout at the beginning? It's a 2 hour drive for me, now I want to go check it out this weekend

Out of curiosity what makes the rebuild that expensive ? Just the parts cost ?

C17 comment made my day
How much hp does this 911 make it sounds great btw

Nice
Did you call the centerline "mustard"?
Oh hell, its Johnny Silverhand's car.
I needed this video today after the last 2 days
18:27 i saw the hawk too eh
hahaha
Great car indeed! Why are you so scared?
the audacity of that cut
Which one 😂
I want to do this as a job so badly.
The good news is you can....Just film cars! It may not become a full time job but you can certainly do it.
12:30 While these older cars may seem unsafe, the 911 or practically any car will be safer than my motorcycle. 😬
have you ever had situation like your 911 was overheating in hot summer in traffic jam ?

Tedward is committing Porsche Neglect on his own car :/
Who’s white 993 is that? couldn’t catch it in the video
That's part of the Team Champagne NInjas fleet. Same owner as the LFA, DTM, SL65 BS etc
My gramps only drove lincolns
Being rich seems fun.
You can do the same with a cheap sports car. You don't need a Porsche.
^^^ This. get a Miata and drive forever
I totally agree. One of my most fun cars is amazingly a $2000 240d manual. 0-60 38 seconds but it makes me smile.

Does anyone know what the light that appears on the tachometer is for?
It’s just like a shift light for fuel economy. It’s useless
am i the only one bugged by the oil pressure (?) going crazy? is it just a quirk of the dial?
You might be looking at the oil level. Pressure stays stable
@TedwardDrives you have an oil level gauge? Cool!
I love the whine sound on this car, can anyone tell me what it is / why it happens?
It's probably the gearbox and it is a little noisy with the whine in 4th and 5th gear. It could be because theres no insulation in the car. It could just be a noisy G50.
What's the intermittent yellow light in the tach?
I was wondering the same
shift light
Why are the gauges sideways in this car?
he made it that way. some owners do that just to have the red line at the top
Cool cars owned by putzs.. ‘it’s my only second drive this year’ I’ve owned six Porsches but these guys keep me from another.
I drove about 150 cars on video this year. Not a putz. Just no time because I work every day :)
👌🏾❤️👌🏾
What happened to everyone else after lunch?
We all cruised back to the garage, dropped off cars, and headed home
I especially needed this video today, thanks a lot as always Tom.
