My dad has a 57' Speedster, all original. Took a ride with him to a cars and coffee (the car didn't have belts), and didn't realize the speed difference that would become apparent during a stint on the highway. Cars going 80 felt like 180 sitting in the slow lane at 50mph. A neat car, but definitely a product of a simpler time.
You can’t go more than 50mph on the highway? I always thought they were faster than that! They are, basically, souped up VWs. They have many of the same issues, especially handling, due to the rear-mounted engine. Although quicker than VWs, they weren’t fast, by modern standards. They did make some twin-cam models that were faster, but also hard to tune and fragile, according to my limited knowledge. Always wanted one, but now that I might finally afford one, they are way outside my price range!
Wow, that little 356 drives so nicely for being 70 years old. Just think: someone in the 50s comparing a 356 with an MG TF or something similar. No comparison. ❤
Those beautiful classic style analog gauges.... Love how the Tachometer is in the center of the gauge cluster.... typical Porsche style, and so far ahead of its time.
I pressume you're American? 😁 It's cool to see how excited you guys get when talking about driving a manual car, while it's like the most normal thing for us Europeans! At least, the real car guys amongst you! 😉
There's the reason why I love watching your videos: not only I find your commentary and the cars you show entertaining, but you almost always show some details/party tricks around the cars you put your hands on that I would otherwise probably never know of. That whole 356A looks super tidy, especially the engine bay and the yellow fog lights and red leather on the interior are a perfect match for that dark grey paint job.
The double taillights on the 356A and 1st gens (48-50?) Are GORGEOUS. If I was ever going to jump on a 356, it'd have to be an early car. Such a beauty.
What amazes me about these old cars is the feeling of pleasure they provide driving along a twisty road at moderate speed. Even video gives some idea of that. Then you see them at Goodwood Members meeting, drifiting through every corner. The steering wheel turning the wrong direction to catch the slide on the exit. And it's a whole different thing. The skill level of those drivers is something else. To dance on edge and not go flying off the road or worse.
What I noticed about Porsches is that before you’ve ever been in one, watching them on video isn’t all that impressive, but after you’ve been in one and heard all the weird unique Porsche noises and felt the unique way they handle, watching them on video becomes a lot more special. This video certainly conveyed some of that but it’s just not the same.
I rented a '61 Beetle a while back and to date it is my favorite car amongst the dozens of 60s-present driver's cars I have driven in terms of fun factor. I'd imagine a 356 would be on another level still. I love how easy they are to just hop in and drive.
Beautiful job driving this so well! It's beautifully done, harkening to the 300SL's in that color, and with those wheels. Just stunning. I've worked on, and driven a few of them, and as shown here, they are an absolute delight. Tall geared so they have long legs, super torquey with the big carbs and big valve heads and ports, and low slung in the suspension so they feel glued, but comfortable. Simplicity meets racing heritage... and swing axle.😍
This one was special. What a specimen of a Porsche 356A and what an experience it must be to be behind the wheel!! Thank you for taking us along Tedward!!🫡🫡
I am 73 years old. When I was growing up my father used to call the Volkswagen Beetle the poor mans Porsche. He also told me that this type of Porsche engine could be installed in a Volkswagen Beetle to give it more power
Not really related but kind of ironic this video just got released. Besides being a car enthusiast i'm also a guitar player and finally bought a really nice example of one of my favorite guitars of all time. Which happened to be the same year as this Porsche... a 1956 Gibson Les Paul Special. Love all the small details on this car, I always love finding that on vintage instruments. Anything vintage or antique always has fascinated me, whether its cars, coins, or guitars haha.
He isn’t joking about popping the motors out on these , the owner of my shop had 2 of these. I was swapping a built up super 90 engine into the cleaner one and I had the motor out the bottom and on a table in under 2 hours
7:29 This keychainpocket is missused. The chain should come out at the wider and open side of the pocket, so that the key can slip in and to stow away the key in that pocket when you pull the chain. *Apologise my English.
This car is as beautiful as a jewel!💫💍 Even when driving at normal speeds, I believe the driver will experience great joy and fun. It's a kind of enjoyment that can only be experienced with classic sports cars.💕
Within my memory, 356s were not expensive. When I was 16 (1966), I could have bought a running 1956 Porsche with an aluminum body, for $800! Later, I was aware I could buy a good 356 for as little as $10K-$12K! This Speedster is rarer and more desirable, but although I haven’t checked, I don’t think you can get much in the way of 356s today for less than 6 figures.. which unfortunately puts it out of my price range! Luckily I guess, there are still plenty of other good sports cars available for much less!
I'm trying to figure out how I would fit in that driver's seat. The steering wheel is nearly touching your thigh, which means anyone bulkier would be wedged there.
@@chadbarbaro it says diligf which I think is referencing the term dilligaf which was a joke we used to use. You can google dilligaf to get the meaning. I don’t know if that’s what he meant but it’s the first thing thing that popped into my head.

I love watching POV drives with manual cars it gets me excited to finally drive a manual hopefully in the next half a year
Finally someone gets me
The way I rush to enjoy these videos if it’s a stick shift

@@samstedman409 Nothing quite like the sound of being passed by an air cooled 911 on track. Sounds like a propeller air craft flying overhead.

Love the Vasek Polak license plate surround. Such history.
For the power just being at the border of a C-note, it moves pretty good. The fact that it's barely larger than a kid's PowerWheels helps, too.

Clever bit of reverse psychology salesmanship, if you drive this car you're going to die. Ooh!, now I REALLY want one.
The horn is superb and this motor sounds waaaay better than a 718...
356s are so super sexy. Once had the opportunity to sit in a client's red 356 and those interiors are so clean!!!

We love a good bathtub Porsche here on the Tedward channel

The only sad thing about this is that I can't like this more than once.
It went unsold. So you can test drive it again next year.

why is there "Vašek Polák" on the regoplate?? Thats a czech name. Is it the dealership originally soild this car?

Unpopular opinion: I think classics of this caliber should never be modified and should be kept as original as possible.
