My first “experience” of 911s was my older brother telling me about his friend who graduated college with him. This friend was a business major who thought the first thing to do was buy a Porsche! This was in 1964, I was 12, and the Porsche was a 911. I don’t know much else, but that he liked the car, a lot! That kind of turned me on to cars, and the nicer tools in particular (no Porsches yet)!
Like you i have an '88, but completely stock like this one. Alot of things you said resonate with me: the ideal size and view out, and the Toyota-like reliability (seriously). The G-50 is definitely long-legged; 2nd is equivalent to 3rd in, say, a Ferrari 328. The pedal box is adjustable, so these are actually ideal for heal and toe. One of the main selling points for me is that post-'76 911s are fully galvanized, so it's like having a 60's/'70's era car without having to worry about rust. They also get excellent gas mileage for an old sportscar: 30mpg hwy. I've put 40K miles on mine and it has never let me down. I use it for city driving and long-distance road trips. The only disadvantage is that they've become crazy expensive.
Your videos and impressions (and beautiful countryside) are always enjoyable. It should be pointed out though (ask any old Porsche mechanic) that the '87 to '89 911 with the G50 is the most reliable, trouble free aircooled 911 of all time. There were issues before that and after that but they are the sweet spot. And be careful with that trail breaking, they're not as accepting of it as the BMW's of the time with 50-50 weight distribution.
My dad had an 80's SC targa when I was a little kid- I spent many Sunday mornings as a young kid in that car and I miss absolutely everything about it. The airy engine sound, the smell of the oil and gas on startup, the smell of the leather and sound deadening materials inside, the THUNK of the door, the funky door open BZZZZZZZZZZZ, everrry little thing
The sound of that engine - oh that beautiful mechanical sound. Just lovely! Brings back great memories. Dad had a ‘76 911 with the 2.7 RS engine. He never lost a race, including races against motorcycles. 😅😂😎 Magical times! Thanks👍
This video brought me joy. I own an '88 911 and despite having many hours in the driver seat, I still enjoy watching other people drive theirs and enjoy all the same things I love about mine. It's a truly unique and special driving experience.
Man, this brings back good memories! There's absolutely no experience like driving an air cooled 911! I always tell people if you have an opportunity to drive one just do it and you'll never regret it.
Absolute dream car... impact bumpers and all. I had a poster of this car (actually a SC) on my wall all through my childhood and teenage years.... can't even count the number of nights i fell asleep staring at that poster. One day....
Gotta love the Mass-hole ahead of you on RT2 at 23:00 who vacates a perfectly empty right lane to pull ahead of you into the center lane. People like that give massachusetts drivers a bad rap!
@@davidbennett5424 In Miami it's pretty much necessary to drive in the middle lane for safety reasons. People are such bad drivers here that you need to give yourself room to escape on either side just in case.
I have an 89 cab. You ended up touching on everything I love about it. The G50, the tactile nature, the handling, the fact that it’s plenty quick even in today’s driving world. I thought you weren’t going to mention the left side exhaust and the glorious sound you get off the barriers. And then you did. Then I thought I was going to tell you that you overlooked the seats, and then in the epilogue, you did. Great review, as always.
Finally the 3.2! This is the car that I grew up with and have enjoyed it for the last 25 years. Can't say enough good things about them. Thanks for the upload Tedward!
I love my guards red 1985 coupe. It was always my dream car and I managed to buy one about 12 years ago when the prices were low. Fun to drive, reliable, and gets good gas mileage. I also enjoy people's reactions to it. Always get thumbs up and folks wanting to chat and take pics when I drive her.
a somewhat overlooked aspect of the rear engine + transaxle layout is the more efficient power transfer & lightness (no lengthy driveshaft. another (you alluded to) is the greater braking performance. Porsche has always had an edge vs traditional layout competition because their cars are lighter (relatively), have great traction under braking, and more balanced braking control. the "giant killers" of yore became core to production design & engineering. all from the old man's P-Wagens & KdF-Wagen.
I worshipped this era growing up in the eighties. Nothing else looked like it, sounds like it and as I would later find out, drove like it. I just wish they were affordable.
Judging by this video it feels buttery smooth to drive, I hope it feels the same to actually drive it. It's like this is as smooth as it can get in such a mechanical car without the intervention of plenty of electronics, if that makes sense. The downshift from 3rd to 2nd around 18m mark as you exited the highway was sooooooo satisfying, on the video it felt like a perfect shift. Timeless piece of art and this paint job is one of the best suited for this car imo. Although the spec of yours feels like the one I'd rather go with if I could choose, I hope I'll own any 964 in near future. Such a fantastic car, thanks for the longer video with this one. ❤
Me too. I got my own drama but drift games garage burned down with all the cars in it including the new drift lambo they teamed with libertywalk to drift in thier own drift tour this year. What a sad day in the drift world.
I bought my 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera almost 17 years ago when they were Cheap Cheap Cheap... I wish I would have bought more of them then but who would have known they would increase in price so much. They are fun to drive and they just keep going. Mine has almost 200 thousand miles on it and it just keeps going...
14:56 - yep. I'm not a car enthusiast but I have driven my dad's 1971 Datsun pickup truck and it is a raw driving experience. It has no P/S, no A/C, a very thin steering wheel and no modern amenities. It doesn't even have a radio! You can feel every little bump and imperfection on the road. Its quite a noisy ride but it is definitely fun and engaging. The only thing I would like it to have would be A/C as that would make it more comfortable to drive during the summer.
Seeing this made me nostalgic for my '86 Targa in Guards Red. Looking at your POV video nearly made me flash back to the good old days. Thank you for that.
Tedward, this is my high school lust object in car form. Unadorned, NA engine, and light for a 911. Take away things and leave a simple platform that is good as a daily or for some lightweight track work. There is a secondary industry for modding and repairing 911s into any number of desires. That would not easily occur with a car built today.
The difference in the gearbox is important yes, but it’s the hydraulically actuated clutch that makes the most difference by far in how the G50 cars drive.
Good video - Thanks! This makes me appreciate my '87 911 all the more. I also bought mine some years ago when prices for these were MUCH lower and I am very glad I did.
I’m shopping for my first 911 now, so these videos are extremely helpful! Have been a @tedward fan for years now! The biggest issue in searching for one is access to examples to drive. And, actually having to choose ONLY ONE, which you get into here. Keep them coming!
Always loved these cars. I had a 84 911 with the 915, and it was always popping out of 3rd gear. My 85 I also had I loved a drove that car and it had over 200k miles on it and the odometer broke at 180k by the time I sold it. One thing about the air cooled Porsche and the VW’s is they love RPM.
@14:28 I find that upshift light especially hilarious because I guessed what it was because my mum's 2019 Skoda Citigo has pretty much the exact same function on it's dash

For a long time this model 911 was my dream car. Back in my 30s seemed semi attainable at some point. By the time I got to a point in life where a toy car was doable, price and availability of these had changed a lot, and not in my favor. So, 20 yrs later I ended up picking up a 997, which is a great car. Ironically, picking up one of the g-series cars may have been a decently smart financial decision.
When I was a kid I remember how a Porsche from this era with a Whale tale used to park near my house. All of the kids thought it was really ugly.😂😂😂. Now I look at this one and it’s so dainty and pretty.❤
Glad to hear that I’m not the only one that sees 992 as a modern reinterpretation of ur-911 and G-modell lookswise. Not a big fan of how it drives tho, unfortunately that’s the only 911 I ever drove, I’d really want to try some older ones.
This is it. My dream car. I’d love to own one someday. I love old cars, and this is just peak retro car ❤️ It’s perfect for me: not too big, mechanical feel all around, great engine, stunning design, beautiful interior and the sound!! Gosh, old cars definitely get me easily. I daily one, it’s the opposite of a sports car (being a 1991 Peugeot 205 with 45hp) but it’s heaps of fun and I wouldn’t want anything modern instead. I kinda hate that I was born too late to be able to afford one when they were cheap. I’m 21, studying computer science, so I could get the money someday. But unfortunately by the time I can afford one for today’s price, they’ll be too expensive.
The first time I ever drove one the downward hinged pedals and the left side ignition was strange but it was so much more fun to drive than anything new even with a 0-60 in the high 6 seconds; suck it Hellcat😂
As a owner of the exact same Guards Red car but from 1986 (w/ 915) I gotta defend my baby a little bit. There is nothing wrong with the 915 transmission, especially one that's tuned-in and well maintained. It was a derivative of the 916 racing gearbox Porsche used in the 70s and 80s. If you know anything about Porsche history you know what they did in those two decades. It's designed to be lightweight and incredibly fast, but owners were expected to know how to use it properly. For sure, when I first met the car two years ago I thought "what the hell" too, because shifting it the same way i would shift a modern car, half the time I couldn't get into 2nd at all. But living with it and dailying it for 2 years now the gears glide in and out and I never miss a single shift. The trick is in the clutch and in timing and when you get it right it feels like a well lubricated bolt action rifle, incredibly satisfying. If it's good enough to win at Le Mans it's good enough for you to rip through some weekend twisties.
@@TedwardDrives Hey! I don't disagree with anything you said, just sharing a bit of history and personal experience on the gearbox! This is an age old debate in the aircooled community but I'm in the camp that the 915 can arguably offer more satisfaction than the G50 and not something one should avoid. I'm obviously baised, of course. Love your videos
Hi Tedward, I discovered your channel long time ago and have followed it since then. I really enjoy your videos (especially the Porsche ones). You have a nice camera placement, good picture & sound quality and often drive a lovely scenic route that kind of remind me of my home area here in Scandinavia. Also your selection of test cars is really nice going from Citroen 2CV to very expensive sport cars. In my youth I owned a 911 Carrera 3.2 Coupe with Club Sport suspension and 8 & 9x16 Fuchs plus a backdated exhaust. Every time you post a Porsche video I miss that car. Had it for over 7 years and loved it. Thanks for all the nice videos and keep up the good work.
You are essentially driving my car - '87 Guards red, but mine has chrome Fuchs and the whale tail - bought it 30 years ago and I will never sell it - the first thing I did however when I bought it was to ditch the Buick steering wheel and replace it with a three spoke Momo - much better look to me
Nice Blaupunkt radio, thinking about getting one for my MX5. I always like spotting them in cars out and about to see how they look. Goes very well in a Porsche.
My wife has a 1987 Targa with SSI heat exchangers and an ECU chip. Before the mods I bought the car for $20,000 about seven or eight years ago. She’s worth considerably more than that now.
my 2002 saab 9-5 aero also has a shift light like that, it'll adjust if I'm full throttle and come back on near redline just like this 911 which is fun
One of the most iconic, gorgeous sports cars ever made - however, the driving experience of these in stock form does not justify their ridiculous price tag. There are so many sports cars to be had for a fraction of the price, that feel more purpose built and inspiring to drive.
The market speaks for itself...this is what people want, this is what's driving up their price. These are not like other sports cars. Rear engined, aircooled, mechanical, and rare as in terms of how often you see them on the road. Well deserved for every cent!
My dad's friend bought one in black, new.. my father had a Celica All-trac and they used to race on ribbon of twisty roads in western New Jersey.. His friend was pissed that he couldn't outrun the celica. Fast forward to today.. I don't know which one I would want more.
Back in the 80s, many 911 owners crashed them because of the imbalanced center of gravity due to the rear engine design. One of the tricks Porsche used to fix the issue was to put counter weight blocks of steel to the front of the car.
Every time you drive an air-cooled Porsche on here I am always blown away by how well the developers of NFS Porsche 2000 managed to capture the exact sound of every car from the cockpit.
I install the solid metal valve stems on all my vehicles. Buy once and forget about them. The rubber ones can be very problematic. The oil is cooled by air so either way, this is an air cooled engine. People can be so strange sometimes about what sets them off! Those are "stovepipe" fenders - a 911 hallmark! Another great drive, Tedward...thank you! -Tom.

Thanks for the real nice video ! Only one remark...Yes the G50 is the better gearbox , but it's not a holy grail. It does the job better than the 915 . My 84 has a rebuild 915 gearbox and it will do it's job not to bad. Both are old gearboxes and I have driven other older cars who shift better than the 80's Porsches... so yes go for the G50 if you can find and afford one. I should advise to look for a well maintained car . I love the older cars because of the engagement and the older 911's are one of the best classics to give that feeling. Thanks .
the funny thing is the word "roof" is pronounced both ways depending on what region your'e from lol. Tim Allen would say "Rough" and I would say "Roooo-F"
This is basically my dream 911. Guards Red, 15" Fuchs, plenty of sidewall, basically stock and cared after... What a machine.

Sounds like a beautiful car!
Beautiful car, very much a dream car for me!
That engine sounds soooo smooth.
You are essentially driving my car - '87 Guards red, but mine has chrome Fuchs and the whale tail - bought it 30 years ago and I will never sell it - the first thing I did however when I bought it was to ditch the Buick steering wheel and replace it with a three spoke Momo - much better look to me
A true drivers car! Great vid and thanks for the spin. Cheers!
What a great video, nice job!
Oh nice, another Porsche video!
Nice Blaupunkt radio, thinking about getting one for my MX5. I always like spotting them in cars out and about to see how they look. Goes very well in a Porsche.
I've always wanted one of these. Nice car, great drive.
I have an 18 GT3 and it’s such a different look from the front while driving. I started with 993 TT
For god's sake don't modify your bumpers. The bumpers are fine. It's a beautiful car.
Thank you for an excellent, and nice long drive video in the 911 Carrera! The camera & audio work, and narration were great.
closing sound is just my fave sound ever Uh!
Sounds so nice and well sorted!
One of my dream cars
My dad's friend bought one in black, new.. my father had a Celica All-trac and they used to race on ribbon of twisty roads in western New Jersey.. His friend was pissed that he couldn't outrun the celica. Fast forward to today.. I don't know which one I would want more.
Back in the 80s, many 911 owners crashed them because of the imbalanced center of gravity due to the rear engine design. One of the tricks Porsche used to fix the issue was to put counter weight blocks of steel to the front of the car.
Excellent video!! Beyond jealous!
Ive always known this shape/era as the 930... im from the UK 🇬🇧
-Tom.
Bruce Anderson described it to me as air/oil cooled. is that ok?
@@grumpy9478 😂👍What else can you expect from a dude who follows this guys YT channels.. He has 11 of em last count lol... Here's 1 of em

Hey boy, ya buddy still sellin those scan tools? "The Review Center - bavarian dominator"
This reminds me need for speed porsche 2000
Simply the Graal ! 😍
Thanks .
Ruf like 'Roof' ist right!
The name is Alois Ruf he is the founder of RUF Automobiles and he's german of course.
the funny thing is the word "roof" is pronounced both ways depending on what region your'e from lol. Tim Allen would say "Rough" and I would say "Roooo-F"
@@TedwardDrives I would also have guessed the other version would be 'rough', so I learned something now, as a german.👍😉
