  • I recently bought a 2nd hand 2016 Brompton S1L and plan to slowly convert it into a Semi-Black Edition. The plan is to buy another used Brompton to received all the components that will be replaced from the S1L. But the plan went into a different direction which happened along the process. The M3R even though bought with a good price and running is really in a bad condition so I decided to just stripped it down and rebuild it. It is a good way to spend time also learning the bike mechanics. I had fun doing it and although the finish is not as good as a Raw Lacquer Model as expected from an amateur like me. I think it turns out well! Please enjoy the video! Thanks!
    Brompton M3R = 400 euros
    New Components = ~175 euros
    Extras = ~100 euros
    Old Components, sold for = ~20 euros

    A m a z i n g ! !
    The raw metal ... the component selection 👌.
    Just superb!!
    Just one thing... be careful with the aluminium frame clamps!
    They have a tendency to break mid ride!
    The rest is as I said... superb!

      Hey Bas! Yeah, I had fun disassembling and rebuidilng it. I had looked for the cheapest Brompton I can get from Marktplaats for the project. I also met nice Dutch guys who did the Glass Bead Blasting to expose the steel.

    Nice stuff mate. So - you kept the Brompton calipers and just changed the levers? If so did you have to renew with new cabling? I only ask as I have 3 Bromptons but only one with the post-2012 levers and would like to change the other 2 bikes but only if not to expensive.....

    • @brompterdam

      Hi! Yes, I kept the Old Calipers. I renewed the cabling using standard ones and cut it my self according to required lengths.

  • @markachternaam5207

    Ziet er super goed uit! I have some questions:
    1. Can the rear triangle axle (in the pivot point of the rear axle, not the rear wheel axle) be easily removed and reused?
    2. How did you clean and prepare the rear rack? I'd like to remove the oxidation of my alu rear rack but not sure if it will look good, I noticed you painted yours.
    3. Do you have any tips on making sure the spray paint reaches all sides of the frame and fork folding hinge?

    • @brompterdam
      @brompterdam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Sorry for the late response! The rear axle is a hassle to removed without the tools. I ended up buying the specific tools in an online shop from Belgium called Vlerick Fietsen. The Rear Rack is cleaned by paint remover and sandpaper and I painted it up because the color already faded. Light Glass Bead Blasting would help I think instead of stripping it yourself.

    • @markachternaam5207
      @markachternaam5207 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brompterdam Thanks! I completed my full rebuild :) I ended up removing the rear axle, damaging the thread in the process and then replaced it. I used sand paper and a metal file to clean the rear rack and then used a silver spray paint that's suitable for bare aluminium (a paint suitable for galvanised metals).
