- Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks like an incredible new addition to the Nintendo Switch library, but there's a potential problem. In the Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer, some fans are questioning whether Mario is still voiced by Charles Martinet. What's really going on here?

@@user-jl7xj5iz9kI mean when he cameoed in the Mario movie a mere 2 months ago, Giuseppe sounded EXACTLY like Mario, so him agibg probably isn't the reason for the voice change.
A world without Charles Martinet voicing Mario is not something you want to think about.

I mean, it’s gonna happen eventually, considering how he’s getting older, Nintendo would have to find someone who can do Mario’s voice, of course it won’t exactly be the same but it would at least be close.

I'm 99% convinced that this is still Charles Martinet, and his range just changed a little with age. Nintendo may do a lot of questionable things, but I'm sure the voice of Mario, (in the games anyway,) is something they'd never mess with until the VA dies.

I remember reading that Japan really respects VAs which is why May hasn't made a more recent appearance in Pokemon.
It would be weird for Charles to not voice Mario without addressing it on social media for important reasons

@@Spongyboi897 Or maybe it was a classic wrong clip. Remember that voice actors have to do their lines multiple times because they need to hit the perfect tone. It could perfectly be an early clip to send to the direct, either due to time or by mistake, that would be fixed in production.

No that’s definitely Charles Martinet. I recognize that voice from miles away, he just sounds more cartoony in this new game.

New voice actor or not, we must still agree that Mario turning into a Raccoon, a Penguin, several other animals and even an Elephant now is still truly one of the biggest talents of all time! ✊
Those were just costumes. He's a straight up animal now.

He is, and he's somewhere in his 60s too so I he's still going to be around for a bit longer ☺️
he is, it's just that the voice is slightly pitched higher
they've been reusing the same voice clips for so long that this is probably just what the voice sounds like now that they needed to record new ones, or maybe he was told to make it sound a little different either as something fresh or to match the new artstyle. i don't think we have anything to worry about, and this could be unfinished voice lines anyway

Dude's been the voice of Mario for longer than I've even existed, and it's likely just down to the fact that Charles is just getting up there in age, and as we should know, the human voice is always changing, especially with age.
Edit:I don't mean a drastic change, as everybody is different, and thus ages differently, but his technique has also likely widened and diversified with age as well.

It's amazing how the fans noticed these extremely subtle details that it wasn't him. I never noticed the difference but my God it really is someone else 😢
I've seen lots of people talk about this and I'm pretty sure it is still Charles voicing Super Mario in this Game. He probably recorded new lines since Nintendo uses old ones from past Mario games or maybe was told to sound different. So it's still him, there would've been an announcement that he will stop voicing Mario and the other characters.

2:27 I agree the most with this theory. Especially with the new sound effects, it definitely seems like nintendo wants to reflect their new style from every aspect. The art style is different, the power ups are different, and of course, the sound effects are different. I'm really excited to see what new stuff wonder brings to the table and how it could help revive 2d mario from just having a "new" super mario bros game release every console.

He's still Wario too, from the clips I saw. And Luigi and Waluigi, even though those voices were never really in question. I can't remember if he voices any other characters in Mario franchise or its spinoffs but if he does, I doubt that he's been replaced. People get older, try new techniques, do voice training, etc. It's not unusual.
Yeah I think so I actually went to a convention recently that Charles Martinet was at and I just asked him if that was his voice in the New Super Mario Bros Wonder. He said he couldn’t say so I would think maybe that means yes.

@segamodel4 I just need time to process it, one of my childhood voices, retiring. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for his promotion but, it's so sad to see him go, it feels like such a big deal.

Charles Martinet probably got a new voice direction as well. And if that's the case, then this kind of reminds me of how Roger Craig Smith got a new voice director when recording lines for Sonic Frontiers.

I like to think he voiced Mario normally and then the devs increased the pitch of his voice to sound more cartoony and to fit the art style of the game

Voice direction, no announcement that he left, he even said he wants to be Mario until he drops, and he probably voiced his movie lines years ago.
Sounds like martinet to me, he is 67 now so his voice is going to start changing. With the amount of dialogue recorded and advances in AI, we could probably have his voice for as long as we like (which should be forever of course)

Just recently announced Charles Martinet has officially retired from Nintendo.
This wouldn’t be the first time Charles Martinet didn’t voice Mario. In Hotel Mario, Mario was voiced by Marc Graue and of course in the Mario TV shows Mario was voiced by Lou Albano and Walker Boone.
Don't forget about the movie!
Those ones were before Martinet had a staple in voicing Mario. Except for the movie.

Charles Martinet & Bill Farmer (the voice of Goofy) are great voice actors in our childhoods. Both of them knew they will always love to continue to be voice of those icons until they were drop dead.

Exactly, his voice changed environmentally. He sounds a lot like Sunshine Mario actually, though in that case he was matching the vibe of a vibrant vacation instead of a wacky world.

Tbh, I'm kinda glad this is the new voice actor already, cuz like, now that we know Charles is gonna stop anyway, at least we also know now that - even though he _can't ever_ replace the OG man - this voice actor sounds *very similar* to Charles. So if anything, it would be the best replacement you could get.

I’d say it’s better to have a new VA for Mario sooner than later. I think that already happened just by hearing how different Mario and Wario sound, but still, Charles Martinet is one of my inspirations for VAing, and getting to hear more from him is a blessing.

The thing is Japan literally does not replace VA’s until the voice actor either dies or can’t voice the character anymore, that’s why Sonic’s JP Va has literally never changed
I don’t think they replaced him, it’s just the fact that we haven’t had newly recorded lines in so many years,that when Nintendo finally tiled Charles to record new lines, his voice was so different we thought it was another person.

Charles was and always will be one of my favourite VAs and the voice of my childhood! Even if he does get replaced one day, but I can tell that day won't be for a LOOOONG time!

C'mon now just because charles did new voice clips for mario and the others doesn't mean that he was replaced it's just the fact that we're not used to somthing different from the original voice clips
when i hear the voicelines in wonder I still hear charles's voice but it sounds like the developers purposely made the pitch a bit higher or something in some bits to fit the more "cartoony" kinda vibe that the game is putting out which isnt bad i personally kinda like it

Luigi's voice in Luigi's Mansion 3 sounded a bit different when compared to Luigi's Mansion 1 (despite the fact that Martinet voiced him in both games). The newer lines probably sound a bit different due to his age and how he recorded them.

I’m guessing that it may be at least in part due to a possible new voice direction, with Mario’s voice now sounding even more upbeat and varied, in a similar situation to Sonic in Sonic Frontiers, with Roger Craig Smith giving him a deeper voice to not only show that Sonic has grown up a bit, but also because of the game’s more serious direction.

Roger Craig Smith changed up his voice a bit for Sonic in Frontiers and people still had an issue with that? One thing is the movie version and the other is the game version. I've seen TH-cam videos of people doing their own voice impressions of video game characters and some of them sound great and others not so much. Charles Martinet isn't going to be around forever you know. Fans need to stop acting so immature about this and face the reality that change is inedible.

Likely it's just a different voice direction and it's still Charles. Also, they've been using old recordings of his voice for quite some time and wanted a new feel to the 2D games and recorded how he sounds now. I think it matches the new art direciton.

Got to meet Charles Martinet last October, got a couple of autographs from him along with some photos, he is one of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met at a convention, super super cool guy.
I still remain convinced that's Charles. I think I even remember hearing him say that he'll continue to voice Mario until the day he dies.
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but Martinet has said that if he could, he’d voice Mario until the day he dies. Legendary VA and absolute treasure right there

Well I don’t know if this helps but I was recently at a convention that Charles Martinet was also at and I asked him if that was him voicing Mario in the new Super Mario Bros Wonder trailer and he said he couldn’t say. So that at least might hint that maybe he is still in it and it is just him doing new lines.

Yeah I didn't really hear much of a difference in his voice, I mean it might have changed a little probably from age, but If these are recent recordings of him voicing Mario, I would say it still sounds pretty accurate, the same with Wario if not even better since he said "excellent" with conference, overall people should at least be happy that he's still here and that his voice came out fine in the end since there are other actors who had it worse.
