I was a huge Larry Mac and Davey Allison fan. Broke my heart when Davey died. I would love to meet Larry Mac someday.

Larry McReynolds changed our sport! He was phenomenal as a crew chief.

      @@bobhope4732 Nope.
He was a good crew chief but not for that long.

I tell ya.. I always felt that DW had a layer of slime on him. All the times he would call someone out on how they raced but never once admitted to the on-track shit he pulled. Man in the TNN Dale tribute Darell said that at times he said Dale could be brutal.. I was like " do you mean like you were to Davey?".

It’s funny you put it like this: Probably like a lot of guys my age who grew up in the South, I was too young to know more than names and cars in the 80’s. So I knew the names Petty and Yarborough and Waltrip and I knew the blue and red STP car, etc. I didn’t have the attention span to sit three hours for a race, let alone driver interviews, so I really only came to know DW when he was in the Tide car. But I always had a sort of off and on feeling about him, like he was charming and obviously smart and a good driver, but that there was a sharpness to him underneath all that “aw shucks” and “thank the good lord” talk.
I think DW became a better person over the years, as I now go back and rewatch those races I couldn’t sit still for, but I can see why people had an issue with him back in the day. They say Cale called him Jaws because of his big mouth, but that’s not right - he called him Jaws because his will to win included something predatory or cold-hearted. When Rusty wrecked him in that Winston race and when he got so God-fearing and Tide clean, his image changed, but he definitely had some of what made Dale Sr. intimidating. Edit: I meant to say that how he never helped his brother Michael, a really good guy, says something doesn’t it?
All that said, I’m not sure I think he really meant to wreck Davey so hard and the difference between getting “cage rattled” and a total wipe-out was so small back then. But in an era where people died on the regular in stock cars, any of that on the fast tracks could be near enough attempted murder, honestly. The drivers back then weren’t playing around.

Funny about the Earnhardt fan flipping Davy off lol. Ernie Irvan was my favorite driver though for the #28. New font for 1994.

It's funny the comment, "what's a payphone"? Just so happens one of my dad's businesses was payphones and up until about five to ten years ago he still had over a hundred payphones in service. Today i believe he might have 1 or 2. The free government cellphones pretty much finished off the payphone.
