I can promise you, nobody who matters is laughing at you Mr Phil. We have a high level of respect for you and your immense talent!!
Thank you, Jonathan! 😊
The juxtaposition of the delicate goblet atop the live edge wood base is dynamite. Well done. 👍🏻🇺🇸
😊
I think it is absolutely gorgeous and wouldn't change a thing on it.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Good to know, J'Lyssa, thank you! 😊
Great job. Unlocking nature's beauty.
Thanks, I appreciate it! 😊
What you have just produced is very beautiful!!!!
I'm so glad you think so, thanks, Jonathan! 😊
I think it looks great. It's art. Some people will love it and some won't. Its art.
True enough, Thomas. Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it!
Phil
Nice result. Finishing the “bark” was a good call. 👍
Thanks, George! 👍
This would make an outstanding trophy goblet on anyone's mantle. 🇺🇸👍🏻
😊
Your goblet for not having faith in your spindle turning method turned out GREAT. You didn't need a blueprint for it. EXCELLENT as always. YOU reminded us when you were sanding the end of the goblet you were talking about sanding lightly . Too much sanding will cause friction of the paper heating the wood which may cause the wood to weaken and the splits may get bigger. Good job!!!! KEEP ON TURNING
Thanks, Howard! I love this piece, it still sits right up front! 😊
Love your videos Phil. I just got my first lathe and you are my favorite teacher here!
Don't be too hard on your self. I laughed when you said : "you're probably all laughing at me right now". I laughed at your comment, definitely not at your work, it's an amazing piece of art and gives me loads of inspiration.
Good to know, Bas, thank you! 😊
First class result 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇬🇧
I like it too, Maud, thank you! 😊
Phil , You have a Great Eye , once you get turning a piece of wood !
I Love It !
Thanks 👍
Phil you got one thing wrong: me laufhing at you. On the contrary: I truly admire that you made the brave decision on trying to go out of your comfort zone with turning a goblet. Especially with that kind of very hard wood. I had my own share of going out of my comfort zone so I exactly know how it feels. The grain of the wood looks awesome. For me a goblet is never easy to make. So congratulations on this project! Awesome.
Thanks for that, Stephanie! I was pretty sure the wood was going to be worth anything I had to go through to help it shine a bit. 😊
Ugly wood outside, beautiful inside. You made it emerge not only as a goblet (or egg cup?), but also as a beautifully finished conversation piece. The contrast of the rough and smooth, weathered outer surface and rich interior wood makes for a very nice end result. Well done in spite of your being unsure.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yes, unsure the whole time, Valerie. But, you are right, it polishes up so nicely it was worth all the trepidation and effort. Thank you, my friend!
Phil
I had to watch with one eye closed😉!...But whew, you did it👍😁! Its very unique and delicate and beautiful! Gorgeous piece of wood too! You are a craftsman my friend💪😊! Love watching your videos! Always a delight! 💖👍😁
Now that I've finally turned it, I want more, Sunshine! LOL! I'm glad you like it! It is a delight to hold. Thank you for your great comment!
Phil
My wife and I go and dig out iron wood stumps out of the ground. What looks like old rotting wood is an amazing treasure every time I cut a new pice. Some are brown like youe some are almost black and occasionally we get some that shimers like gold. Awsome job thanks for sharing.
Sounds like you get to have fun more than once, Garet! It's nice you and your wife work together like that. I'm glad you like this, thank you!
Phil, you have NO need to doubt yourself & your woodturning. It was hard wood & different wood but your approach to your woodturning & your desire to expose the beauty within a piece of wood, regardless of its size & shape, leaves little room for doubt that you will succeed in producing a 'thing of beauty'. An 'artist ' creates apiece because THEY WANT TO, not because someone places a set requirement on. Be bold & resolute using your skills, which are abundant, produce your piece then let other people decide if they like it or don't like. As long as YOU, the artist - woodturner likes it that is what 's most important. That being the case I am sure that the majority of people who view it are going to like it & most of those people are, like me, going to love it. Your a great woodturner & don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Different for you, sure it was but it turned out to be a delightful 'emerging goblet. Well done my friend. Stay safe & well & keep them coming. Don
Thank you, Don, for your effusive, inspirational comments! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop If ever I waffle on too much Phil I think I have previously to please tell me. Cheers, Don
Once again Phil,,,Beautiful piece. 👍👍👍👍
Really glad you like it, Jack, thank you!
Phil
Phil, you are a goofball like me and a lot of my relatives. I love what you do. I watch almost everyday. Keep it up. tc
You rock! 😊
Phil, You did an amzing job considering the the uncertainty involved. As I have said in the Past, You are a true artist.
Thanks, Jody! 😊
I’m glad to k ow I’m not the only one who take to themselves while doing a project! Ha. That wood looks amazing. More like polished stone! I think you always do your “best” Phil. And that is pretty darn good.
Tuffy calls this a Game of Thrones shot glass. LOL!
Lovely wood, and a sweet little goblet!
😊
Osage orange is the same way, you’ve got to sharpen your tools every few minutes, tough stuff. Beautiful turning. Love the video 👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Mark! 😊
Phil, you was able to take full advantage of this incredible piece of wood. What a color, what a smooth finish, ...great result, Phil.
I'll try to do something similar soon, ..but I need to find a piece of wood with some character that help me a little: The wood is so important!
Thank you man.
Thank you very much, Robert! 😃 You are right, the wood is important and the boss!
Good call on the bead! It breaks up the transition nicely. I always learn something from your videos Phil, Thanks for sharing the journey!
You bet, thanks for watching!

Such patience. I would have froze making such delicate work. Inspiring.
Thanks, Jonny! 😊
GREAT goblet , done a few...
Awesome hardwood.thank you.
😊
We love the contrast between “this is kind of what I started with” at the bottom and “this is what you can do if you really apply yourself” at the top. And the colour is just amazing - so rich and chocolatey.
Awesome job Phil. You say what is always on my mind when I turn. But you are not afraid to put it out there. That is a great quality. Learning as we go. And not being intimidated. Great video. Sal
Thank you, Sal! 😊
Good evening, Phil.
I like it. The wood as amazing. Very glad you settled on the shape, it is exactly correct. I may have used the detail tool and created a ring to form the base of the cup as it sets on the log. That may not look 'emerging' but that's my thought.
Thumbs up, my friend.
Thanks for the tips, Ray! 😄
Well Phil. You did a marvelous job. There were a few moments where I wanted to give you an attitude adjustment for your opinions of your ideas and self doubt . You ARE an artist no matter what you think about yourself. Yes the wood is the show but like a potterer that manipulates the clay - the wood is in your capable hands. Beautiful stunning creation
Haha, "attitude adjustment!" Love that, Glenda!
Actually very beautiful Great work!!!
Thank you very much, Hubert! 😊
Great piece, SKOL. BOTTOMS UP!
You know it, Jessi! 😊
Phil, I love it! Not sure why you aren't very happy with it. I looked up Desert Ironwood just for my knowledge. It's so dense it doesn't float! I think your emerging goblet is beautiful. I have a piece of Ipe that I'll try that on. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏾
Thanks for your kind words, Greg! I hope you enjoy your turn with Ipe. 😊
2 years down the road b i watch this and your idea looks very good everything is balanced
The whole piece is Beautiful.
Thank you Judith, I like it, too!
Gorgeous wood! And what a curious goblet, a bit like a champagne flute with a massive foot. :D
Thank you, Nan! 😊 Cheers!
I carve and appreciate the beauty of wood. A I see that you are the ssme.A few yrs ago I got my hands on an incredible piece of burl wood. I sanded it and just varnished it and it is spectacular. I love your work..
It's good to know you are out there appreciating the wood, too, thanks! 😊
Phil this is Craig Warren from Newton Grove NC and I watch you all the time. I've been following your work for several years and appreciate you doing natural turning. I've never used the zinser seal coat but plan to add it to my list of sealers and finishes. Keep them coming Phil you are an inspiration to us and I'd like to chat sometime. Happy turning!!!
Thanks a lot, Craig! 😊
You are correct. Thats beautiful wood. And the piece is incredable! I have some cool pieces to try this on!
Ps. You are your biggest critic! Nothing to be critical of!😁
Awesome! Thank you, David! 😀
Phil. I never would second guess you. Once you cut off the small section I could see a lot more promise that you would achieve your goal. I think you did a very good job in creating this goblet. Once it was finished it was beautiful
Thank you, Dave, I'm glad you like it! 😊
Beautiful wood and you did a great job turning it and it is your creation
Thank you so much, Steve!
Phil
I like it. You had me laughing all the way through this video. You're a funny guy.
LOL!
I know how you feel when you don't think you have good grip on the part but jump in and giderdunn!!!! If you mess up, don't show the video. Nobody will know.
This piece turned out splendidly. You should be proud of your work, your followers love it.
Keep-on-keep'n on!!!
HA! Don't show it, huh? I wouldn't have any videos to share if that was the case, Grampa! LOL! I don't mind showing my goofs. Maybe lots of folks have goofs too and we can all commiserate. I am proud of pieces like this because I really taxed my skills and came up with something respectable. I'm really glad you like it, thank you!
Phil
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I ment no offense by my statement. It's just ment to say, if you screw up a piece that your not proud of don't show the video! A kind of tongue in cheek, har har.
@@grampashorty8468 No offense taken, Grampa. Probably just a case of written word can't show the look on someones face or emotions or whatever. It's all good!
Yes, you did your very best, it’s outstanding as ever
Thank you, Tracy! 😊
Appreciate your honesty
Beautiful piece
Thank you 😊
Wonderful love the colour and the concept beautiful thanks for sharing

Hi Phil, yes there is such a thing as Desert ironwood. I just had to Google it. What you did with this wood it truly amazing! I love this little goblet. It looks more like a sherry glass. My Pop used to drink sherry (nasty stuff) and seemed to quite enjoy it. You my friend and an amazing woodworker. May God bless and watch over you always! Your Florida friend, Dotty ❤️
😊
Fantastic work- looks great to me. 👍👌🇦🇺🔭

Beautiful Mr. Phil ❤
Thank you, Abe! 😀
Gorgeous - pour the wine! Odd how your oft-times expressions of doubt turn hunks of wood into stunning creations. Time for a refill.
Many thanks! 😊
WOW I like that great job Phil
Thank you, Robert! 😊 It's a favorite of mine, too!
Watching you work with that piece of hard petrified wood reminding me of a goblet I made one time out of an 85 year old Bois D'Arc fence post. Very pretty
I love that, Gary! I wish I had an old fence post I could do that with. 😊
Phil this is an exquisite piece! The wood is so beautiful. You out did yourself. I really enjoy listening to you discuss the process. I’m so glad I found your channel!!
Awesome! Thank you! 😊
Hi Phil. You may believe that you don’t have a designers mind, but there is nothing wrong with your imagination. Well done

Thank you very much, Tony! 😊
I don't understand why you doubt yourself I would be very happy to have that on display at my place . yes It has flaws but that is what makes it so beautiful in nature nothing is perfect but that old mother nature doesn't get it wrong and you just helped her along. Thanks again for your knowledge and skills to help people like me , because your skills are so important to people like me and all the other new comers to turning because without any help from people like you and others on this site we would be making a great deal more mistakes. So thank you again, keep well.🪵🌲👍😃
It's a spindle turning. I doubt myself because I don't like spindle turning and I'm not very good at spindle turning. I can usually make something out of it but it's not much fun, it's uncomfortable and I just don't like to do it. I keep doing it because I figure maybe one day it will become fun and I'll get more confident at it and things will look merry and bright. And, now you know why I doubt myself. I'm glad you can find something useful in my videos so thank you for watching! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop you are more than welcome the pleasure is all mine, I have learned more watching you than a hundred books so thank you.👍🪵🌲
Thanks Phil very good turning and finish mate

Absolutely beautiful wood. I think you accomplished what you set out to do, particularly in the space the piece provided to you.
Thank you, Mark! 😊
The wood IS gorgeous, Phil, but your working of it is amazing, as usual. I was very nervous watching this bur all is well that ends well........!!!
Thank you very much, Barry! 😊
I just watched this goblet build of yours and it was beautiful. Thank you for your advise a few months ago. You are absolutely my favorite turner as you actually teach and others just show which is totally worthless. I say again I wish I could meet you someday. Happy Easter Sunday. God bless you Phil. Thank you, Billy Bob from Ding Dong, Texas
While it was on the lathe I thouht the base looked to big however stood up it sort of works, I do believe I have caught up with all your videos now, making a final check, my one disappointment is I have only seen the mouse wrangler twice, we need to see more of him. Thanks for the journey Phil and may you keep turning for a long time yet my friend.
Thank you, Lewis, for spending so much of your time and thoughts with me, much appreciated! 😊
Amazing piece of wood Phil
It is, isn't it Paul! I'm so fortunate to have had the opportunity to turn it!
Phil
This looks like a museum piece. Bravo brother!
I'm so glad you like it, I do too! Thank you! 😊
Awesome job Phil!
Thanks a lot, Mark! 😊
That very different. I love it.
That is STUNNING... I just recently 'found' you, so I am binge watching your videos... I love the way you let the wood 'talk' to you and decide how you're going to turn each piece... you're awesome... THANK you for all the great content.
Welcome, Celia and thank you! 😊

I always learn about wood turning and how to approach a project when I watch you turn Phil. U the best Phil !!!...Iron Wood is a wood I was fascinated with when I was little & still am as an old guy. Thank You Dave, "Calmwood Creations" for sending... Great job Phil, it looks like a perfect shot "glass" for "Game of Thrones" ...Look forward to next week Phil...tm
Maybe I should change the title, Tuffy? "Game Of Thrones Shot Glass." The video would probably go viral! LOL! Thank you, my friend!
Phil
Wow! What a beautiful piece! I only started watching your videos about a month ago and have been in awe of your talent and insight to what can be turned. Keep it up, I really enjoy watching.
Thank you, Georgia! 😊
Beautiful piece Phil! Thank you for sharing. Here in southeast Indiana our ironwood is also known as blue beech. Like your piece, it is a very hard and dense wood. Now that I've viewed your video; I have some confidence that I can turn the couple of pieces that are sitting in a corner of my shop. Thanks again!
Good, Phil! I'm glad you feel more confident and I'm really glad you have some to work with. Good luck!
Beautiful! I told my friend about your videos today and she's going to check out some of them.
Awesome! Thank you, Mary! 😂
Phil, look at that finish! It is pure glass.
Do Not let the EWT #1 HOLLOWERING TOOL intimidate you. It very rapidly became my GO TO TOOL. It has so many uses.
Beautiful goblet
SAFE TURNING, John
The finish surprised me too, John! Sooo smooth and shiny. More than any other wood I have turned.
It's not that the hollowing tool intimidates me, it's that I prefer to use a gouge. But, I agree, it does an excellent job when a gouge just won't. And, yes, it's versatile, not just for hollowing. I just wish they weren't so darn expensive!
Glad you like it, John, thank you!

It did indeed, Huw! I'm glad you thought I could get it done, I had many doubts along the way. Thank you very much, my friend!
It looks great. I really like it.
Glad you like it! 😊
Breathtakingly beautiful Phil! Emerging in every possible meaning of the word! You did good, Sir!
Thank you, Charles!
Phil, I seriously doubt anyone was laughing at you when you said they probably were! You are a gutsy man! Most wood turning videos are people telling what they are turning after being done, but put at the beginning. What you did is beautiful! Honestly though, if I were doing it, I would have made the stem a little longer, and made a hint of the bottom. Just a hint. Hope I didn't upset you. Love your videos! Respectfully, Kevin
I like hearing other opinions, Kevin, you didn't upset me at all. The funny part is, that was one of the things I felt I did wrong, only I wish I had made the stem shorter! LOL! See, it's just matter of what we like. To me, the base is what makes this piece, all that nature and texture. But, I respect where you are coming from and I'm so glad you took your time to watch and comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop The base is absolutely great as the"emerging" goblet. I was saying go down a tiny bit further, and then a slight indication of the goblet base or a tiny elevated ring. Keep turning the beautiful things that you do! Very respectfully, Kevin
Looks great Phil! Thank you! Your heart is in your work and it brings out your wood turning wisdom! Very inspiring!
Thank you, Mike! 😊

Just amazing. Your work is wonderful.

I like it. 👍 I know you said you weren't feeling it but it looks to good for it not to grow on you. I bet it is on display in your house right now. I like for things to have a practical use. I don't drink very often but I think you could use it for a shot glass in a pinch. All you need is some Jim Beam and you will be in business.
Tuffy Marginez calls this a Game of Thrones shot glass. You are correct, Greg. As much as many of my pieces have been moved to different corners of the house, I keep this one front and center. It has become a favorite, I'm glad you like it, too! 😊
phil i think it looks just beautiful brother . desert iron wood huh . when i was a boy i worked with my uncle in the woods he rn pulp wood to the paper mill in manistee michigan . what a wonderful place that was as a boy . stunk to high heaven but such a cool place . a big tractor we called them skidders would come and when i say big i mean big . my uncle had a 11 speed flat bed international semi truck and the top of the tires on this skidder were taller then the cab on his truck . sorry got off point lol . my point was my uncle got into some iron wood with his chainsaw and the sparks just flew out of it it being the first time i ever saw iron wood i thought he hit a nail . he cut for a while then stopped to sharpen the saw . i asked him about the nail and why he would keep sawing through it . he laughed and said no buddy its iron wood . it gets its name from the sparks it throws when sawing it . it is caused by minerals in the ground . now i dont know how much of that story is true on how it gets its name but thats what he told me and well thats what i know about iron wood lol . so if it is iron wood you have there it is a beautiful piece . love the way you made it look and sorry for such a long winded comment lol . i kinda miss my youth and wish i would have payed more attention to what i was being tought back then . sure would know alot more and be alot better for it now . bless ya brother again beautiful work phil . bless ya buddy
