- You are Umasou is a fun and charming film that focuses around a T-Rex which adopts a baby Ankylosaurus. Though the majority of the film is lighthearted and fun, there are some really brutal and dark moments scattered throughout.

We need more people to talk about this movie. It truly is something special.
I agree, I was surprised to find out that this movie was good.
its just an anime-
You have unlocked a part of my childhood I've only seen bits of it on YT and thought it was a show when I was like 4
Bruh-
I remember watching this whole movie on this app
Also yeah there was going to be a animated TV show
I know what you mean Steve, BBC earth used to air episodes of planet dinosaur and I was watching it religiously as a kid.
Steve is the only TH-camr who makes dinosaurs interesting to me. I'm more of a gecko and lizard person but would love to hear Steve talk about more dinosaur media! Especially obscure stuff like this please! Takes more thought and passion than just reviewing bad sequels.
You’re the first person I’ve seen consider dinosaurs uninteresting
@@BirdyboysFacts 💀
You say that like Dinosaurs aren't already interesting
@@Birdyboys I know it's weird on my end lol
There really is a first for everything. Pardon me for sounding a bit judgmental here but how does one...not find Dinosaurs interesting???
I'm so happy you've finally covered this film! I remember having this film downloaded on my tablet when I was a teen and watching it on holiday all the time. My sister HATED non-english films but I was able to convince her to watch this with me and she cried. Really happy that other people get to discover this film now 😄
This film should be recommended to everyone especially families
blocked and reported
YES! This movie is such an awesome, hidden classic. The voice actors are amazing (One Eyed Baku's actor is so eerily calm and quiet, Heart's voice actor was known for playing Inuyasha, etc), the animation is simplistic but very action packed, and the story, while it was different than the book, worked great as a stand alone. I found out about this movie when I was in high school through a friend, we both got super hooked on it, I made a fan character and also made an AMV that sadly got taken down for copyright. It was so hard to find a full version of the movie, so when someone uploaded the whole movie to TH-cam with the subtitles, I downloaded it so I had it saved. I still have it on my iPod Touch and I will always love this movie :'D
Edit: Forgot to mention I'm so glad this movie never had any weird spin-offs. None at all. Not a single one and especially not a weird one animated by Korea that tried to ride off the popularity of this movie. Nope, no such thing exists.
I remember stumbling upon this film on Kiss Anime and had forgotten about it after a LONG time. Happy to see you covering it, genuine surprise.
No im not, I am Madcat.
My farts are better than Steve’s farts 💨
Shut it, Umasou
Imagine I am Wildcat appears-
A Madcats controller?
Ever since I saw your channel, I’ve always had the feeling that this film would be up your alley and I pray that you’d finally review it. And the day is finally here, I can finally rest in piece
YES OH MY GOD I ADORE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!! i found it back in 2018 and it DOESNT get enough credit for what it is!
i did want to mention however, in the scene with the sauropods, Heart didn't eat one of their young, he INTENTIONALLY went after the leader and left the children alone! you can see in the scene the one who dropped is visibly older than the rest! unsure if it was done intentionally but id like to assume it was and he wouldn't go after children lol
Glad you caught that too, I distinctly remember it was the old leader because Heart did a funny prancing walk towards him and high-kicked him in the head.
that's very nice. it shows balance of life. things aren't always light, rainbows and friendship. sometimes things gets dark, like a soul.
I Didn’t Expect Steve To Review This.
Glad to see you covering this film.
Didn’t expect him to cover this, what’s next: Arashi no yoru ni?
I second this!! I remember coming across that film randomly on TH-cam back in 2009, it was wild
One of my favorite childhood movie! Ah.. seeing it again bring back memories. :')
You don't know how long I've been waiting for this man, This was my favorite childhood gem when I stumbled upon it on youtube
This is one of my favorite childhood movies and somebody saying it's underrated gem brings me some much joy to.Thank you, Steve. :)
Illustrations of ancient Earth will always have a special place in my heart.
babe wake up, steve reviews just uploaded
Thanks For this! Your Reviews are awesome
ANOTHER ANIME VID HAS DROPPED 🗣️🗣️🗣️
(Also, when I read the notification I thought it said "You are useless" 😭)
Review Suggestions:
- Primal by Genndy Tartakovsky

I watched this film a while ago after my sister recommended it. It's a really well made film that pulls no punches.
I always thought that Heart would live off of berries and, when a predator comes to investigate the herd and tries attacking them, Heart defends the herd and eats the intruders? Like a bodyguard.
Nah, he'd go off to hunt. In the movie, he'd hide Umasou and go off to eat other plant eaters.
Once upon a time there was a mum
Her name was Mrs pteranodon
Actually (Hate to be that kind of guy), Heart killed and ate the Elder Sauropod. You can tell from the difference in markings.
I LOVED this movie!!! "I can eat whatever I want!" is something I often say to myself before pigging out
When I first saw the thumbnail in a second, I was like, " Jesus christ, I remember seeing clips of this anjme when I was just 3 years when I first moved to England. Good times."
Since then, I have been thinking of finding this lost jem, but I never did until now.
And now im think about it. I've just realised that the things and shows that i loved were when I first moved here.
I make me more thankful for my family for moving here, and this unknowingly shaped my childhood forever.
8:43 Aparently, these dinosaurs are supposed to be a pack of giganotosaurus.
Firstly: love your videos! I think the best song for me personally is the Big jaws song, my second favorite is the training song cuz the animation is so funny
Gods knows how many edits later; 14:52 “Mum why is Uncle Heart’s face covered in red jelly?”
Yippie! This was a pretty wacky movie, but fun overall. Shout out to the others who found the whole thing on youtube
Found and downloaded baybeeee!
I love this movie. I introduced it to my bro like 10 years ago, and he sobbed.
Ngl I wish a lot more people know about it, it's a really nice movie. Plus, dinosaur doing taekwondo.
There's also Arashi no Yoru ni or One Stormy Night, which is good too.
*Attempt #22*
Would you consider reviewing the Redwall animated series?❤️
The show revolves around various woodland animals defending their home, Redwall Abby, from several evil factions who seek to control it.
Its a childhood favorite of mine, but its a show with dark and depressing elements sprinkled in...that was broadcasted on PBS (being one of the few animated series to focus on story, rather than education).
this movie was a masterpiece, thank you for covering it! hope more people get to see this and the director gets the credit he deserves
The best dinosaurs in fictions are undoubtedly the Dinobots from Transformers especially Grimlock
The end scene is hearts, going back to the old tea Rex after he has grown up and him saying “ A property Big jar doesn’t eat berries” it’s supposed to show that he is moved on from his past and he’s grown and he’s no longer traumatized or haunted with the dreams of him eating his mother
This was the last thing I watched before my son was born, I’ll never forget that.
This is the earliest I’ve ever been
OH MY GOD MY FAVORITE ANIMATED MOVIE FINALLY
Finally, someone talking about this underrated gem! You should see the second film too at some point, Steve!
I kinda miss the darkness and the idea of death in children media. It's a welcoming change of pace to look at the not only showing a predator capturing prey and eating it for survival. Also not make it like some blow hard preachy message sponsored by PETA.
I REMEMBER THIS FILM
I wish Steve can review Code Geass anime.
9:42 - this gives off similar vibes as to when you're playing fetch with a dog, and it runs after a stick you've only pretended to throw.
Omg I cried. I laugh and love every moment of it. Thank you for checking it out.!❤
Peak reviews peak?
Yes!! I subscribed years ago because we seemed to have a shared obsession with dinosaurs and animated movies. Thank you for more Dino content but I really like most of your vids tbh, I have a sleepy playlist of Steve Reviews, hope I’m not the only one! ^^;
Maiasaura IS a type of Hadrosaurid!
Man, i remember the first time i watched this, i cried like a bitch
I remember watching this anime! I found it cute
i remember watching this so long ago when i was just browsing around looking for something interesting to watch and then bam i stumbled upon this and it has had a special place in my memory ever since
I think the two stories fit together perfectly, hearts mother, a herbivore, adopts a carnivore and then Heart grows up to do the same, but the opposite
I was thinking about how you haven’t uploaded
I completely forgot this movie a while ago, found it yesterday, and now your here....odd how thst happened so quickly.
I found this movie I think when it came out here on youtube, and I've loved it ever since.
this animation reminds me of if Pokemon and Jurassic Park had a crossover!
i legit thought Umasou was gonna die.
AHH what the-
Now you brought me childhood memories back
Gotta check little dogs on the prairie next. It's a fun christian show that teaches some good lessons while still being entertaining
I adore this movie and the art style. So glad you reviewed it!
I love this movie, i remember that it was one youtube video about top best Mother's Day movies and along with Wolf Children it was a movie that touched me deeply.
This combines two of my loves, hidden gems and dinosaurs
You are Umasou and Leafie: A Hen into the Wild are some of my favorite Eastern animated movies along with the Studio Ghibli movies like Spirted Away and Princess Mononoke; in fact both movies have this Ghibli-esque vibe from the story, animation, characters, and music. I think that’s why I love both of them so much, they are charming in their own unique ways from Leafie being about a motherhood while Umasou being about belonging.
Honestly, kids deserve to see these types of movies like the reason why the early Don Bluth and the Disney Renaissance movies were so successful for example is because they don’t talk down to them, they are not afraid to show scenes that would deem “too scary” for kids because it encourages them to be creative and teaches them life lessons to prepare them for the real world
"What can I say, circle of life, circle of death huh?"
Me:(looks at Heart)RUN! IT'S GODZILLA!!!😂🦖
🎶Japan, we love you.🎶
I feel like Pero Pero is a way to show Heart making meaningful connections on his own. She is also in the book series.
It is so amazing seeing someone talk about this movie! I watched this years ago randomly and I fell in love with it :3 Not many talk about it though and that's really too bad because it has a great messege about adoption and found family.
Hadn't heard of this piece. Thanks for the upload!
Where has this film been in my life?
Would the movie: “Tetsuo the Iron Man” interest you to watch and review, Steve?
I own this from Discotek under the name Heart and Yummie, and only 2000 copies were made. I think there might still be some copies left.
Also, Heart's adult voice is Kappei Yamaguchi known as the Japanese voice actor of Usopp from One Piece, Ranma from Ranma 1/2, InuYasha from InuYasha, Kaitou Kid/Shinichi From detective Conan, and the Japanese voice of Bugs Bunny.
It was about time Steve rewied this gem of a movie 🤩😆
I quite appreciate the fact the movie remains innocent and charming despite being very realistic about the dinosaurs' true life with the food web.
In a way, you could say the same thing about The Lion King, considering it did a very well told and deep story, but was not afraid to remind that they are still about lions, who can be a true terrorists of nature, like the scene we see Scar eating a zebra leg and later throw it to the hyenas.
Yeah, that "you smell like a puff of sand" lyric should be "The sandstorm carries your scent to me." In fact, the entire song should be
The sandstorm carries your scent to me
I ignore it and turn away
The seething heat will bring a storm
and eventually, wash it all away...
Jumpkick! Tail smash!
With all my might...
Headbutt! Heartbeat! Boom!
For now, I just have to run faster than anyone
and catch my breath once I've come far enough!
The broken skulls that hit the ground
Will be reduced to sand some day...
I won't think about the past, or you...
For now, I just have to run and run...
Jumpkick! Tail smash!
As long as I live...
Headbutt! Heartbeat! Boom!
I just have to rush forward like lightning,
never looking back or thinking of the unknown future!
I feel the red sunlight soak into my skin...
Into the scars that never heals
For now, I just have to run across the baked earth
And once I made it through, I'll live there forever!
The sandstorm carries your scent to me
I ignore it and turn away
The seething heat will bring a storm
and eventually, wash it all away...
Jumpkick! Tail smash!
With all my might...
Headbutt! Heartbeat! Boom!
For now, I just have to run faster than anyone
and catch my breath once I've come far enough!
7:07 I always thought Umasou would be a Togepi.
Last time I was this early, Steve was still doing weekly therapy sessions after seeing Animal Farm
The Great Age of Dinosaurs is another “looks cute but dark and gory” anime dinosaur movie. I recommend
This and One Stormy Night are hidden gems. I'm so glad i fround them.
The point with Teenage Heart and the Sauropod heard. He dosent kill one of the Kids, he picked the oldest of them. All of the "protected" Sauropod Children were left alive by him. Showing, that although he must kill and eat flesh to survive, he has a kind heart and not kill the young, he goes for the old ones hwo lived their lives.
I love dinosaurs especially as a kid and I'm always interested in dinosaur media. I'm glad you recommend this
Also quick note: The second batch of children that Heart's mother has aren't her biological children, they're kids that got abandoned somehow and she adopted them. When Heart asks if they're her children, his pause and "I see. They're yours" implies that she found them and took care of them the same way she took care of Heart. Edit: And the "meteor" wasn't a meteor, it was the Egg Mountain stone having been shot up into space by the volcanic eruption.
Another cute Dinosaur film is "My Tyrano: Together, Forever".
Fun fact, Grownup Heart is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi.
The same Japanese voiced of Usopp in one piece along with InuYasha and recently voiced Red XIII for final fantasy vii remake trilogy of part 2.
@@UltimateDragonX9999 Of course.
@@UltimateDragonX9999 He's also L in Death Note
@@2devious724 Which makes it ironic that Heart’s brother is named Light.
Okay, yeah, I see your criticism on the Pero Pero scene, and like, totally valid, I get your point.
My counterpoint is that the music during that whole scene makes up for literally everything else. God, do I wish they released the soundtrack oficially.
i get enjoyment out of you reviewing more obscure films, that how i learned about padak and barfoot gen, 2 movie i really enjoyed.
Here in the US southwest if carnivorous coyotes can't find any prey animals they'll eat mesquite tree bark. Mesquite beans were a source of protien for the people who lived here. The coyotes eat it and bugs over the winter.
So, not sure about the birdy dinos but afterward life does find a way.
There is another Asian animated movie which, to my knowledge, is based on the same book series as this one.
The movie is called My Tyrano: Together Forever and it's a South Korean movie about a T-rex and a Pterosaur teaming up. The basic premise is similar but the overall plot is completely different.
Unfortunately, there isn't even an English Sub, let alone an English Dub version. I watched the full movie on TH-cam in Vietnamese and despite not understanding a single word, I had a good time.
However, I think there might be a German dub of the movie, so it would be a perfect review for Rick Raptor.
Shout-out to Rick Raptor!
Love your videos
Nice, more dino media!
Keep up the good work!
Just woke up from my nap and this appears Gold
literally showed my friend this movie to them for the first time last week what super odd timing lmao
Loved this movie when I was young! Glad it's not forgotten ^_^
I've never heard of You Are Umasou, and I haven't seen it, but I can't wait to watch it, if I can somehow find it, so that I can watch it online.
8:46 their Giganotosaurus’
I’m just as confused as you are
The one thing that is certain to happen to paleontology and which is just catching on, is that so many 'species' of dinosaur are just the female of the same species. But nobody wants to step on that landmine and erase the legacy before it. Like when they finally relented and admitted that many species were, in fact, just juveniles of the same species. It's going to be interesting. [Tricer]atops will probably be first.
The funny thing about Umasou is, it has better fight scenes than most of the shonen crap we get today. Wait isn't 1:15 Samson and Sally!? That's Japanese?! THAT one destroyed my childhood harder than Watership Down.
Have you seen Dinosaur office RAAAAAH
Yoooo, i watched that film randomly on youtube a couple of years back and thought it was really solid.
You should review a 2006 stop motion short film named Peter and the wolf. It would really suit this channel.
