For street photography I prefer the Olympus E-M5II on a wrist strap for being inconspicuous and use both the 17/1.8 & 12-40/2.8 which are equivalent to FF 35 & 24-80. I adjust my style to suit either lens but the 24-80 range is easier to quickly compose an image but I do like the faster 35mm equivalent for more involvement with the community I am shooting.
That Sony 24-80/2.8 is huge for street photography

I've got a 24-70 too, I love it and at the same time I don't really love it. It's very versatile and you can get great shots in the most situations. But I love wider and more tele too... I can never really choose. I prefer my 70-200. Great video! :)

I had the 24-105 GOSS and I've done so many nice portraits with it especially at 105mm - but now I own the 85mm G- Master 1.4 and two 35mm (1.4 and 2.8) lenses for my portraits and street photography because I really prefer prime lenses instead of zoom lenses and also the backround blurred more at 85mm 1.4 than it does on 70mm at 2.8 or 105mm at 4!

  • @apocryphal_man

I lock myself to the prime focal length I want for my composition when shooting zooms and then zoom with my feet if necessary. I prefer primes and find 24 70s boring, BUT I’m done changing lenses in the streets all the time after a completely wasted guy sneezed right into the camera body when I was about to attach a lens.

Thanks Pierre, it's about time someone with a penchant for street photography did this video! I agree with your observations but find 24-70mm on full-frame a bit bulky and heavy. My favourite street camera is the Panasonic LX100 with the Micro Four Thirds 22-75mm f/1.7 equivalent Leica Summilux lens, mainly for the unobtrusive and pocketable size, advanced instant focus and punchy Leica detail and colours. I love having an f-stop ring and shutter speed dial with 'Auto' modes rather than clumsy 'P.A.S.M.' modes, and it shoots GH4 like 4k video too.

    I have the Canon 24 - 70 L F4 lense. I love it.
I do around 80% of my shots on it. It's so sharp, and versatile. About moving you feet to zoom, I still do that with the 24 - 70, it does a lot, but not all. That being said, it is the perfect middle ground lense.
I would have liked to get the F2.8, but it cost too much for me.

I initially did a lot of street photography with a Canon 24-70mm f4; it's light, 600gm; it's small and compact (if you take the hood off); it has Image Stabilisation, which is good for night shots. The problem is as you mentioned, it made me lazy. I could stay in one position and get loads of shots, instead of moving around an being creative.
I realised that I could get all kinds of shots; wide, long, tight, and would attempt to do so, which meant I would come home with way too many images, and this made my style haphazard. I didn't have any idea what my favourite focal length was, I didn't even think in terms of focal length, and this lens didn't help me with that.
I switched to primes by trial and error, and this helped to hone my street photography skills and style. I now love the different focal lengths and understand what they bring, and why and when to use them. 16mm Ultra Wide, means I'm going to be shooting up close and personal. On mirrorless, on public transport it will more than likely be silent shutter, on the streets it will be mostly candid shooting from the hip. All the shots from that session will be about this close-up theme. I don't have to shoot haphazard any more.
35mm means standard streetscenes, as well as portraits with permission, which helps me engage with people. 35mm to me is the hardest to master, you have to be bold and your technique has to be honed. 85mm means candids portraits, you can stand back, and see the shots before they materialise, and when you shoot at f2.0 (something you can't do on a zoom) magic happens. 85mm is my favourite focal length when shot at 2.0. You cannot mess it up. It's crazy.
135mm means long range shooting from across the road. This focal length give amazing compression especially when you shoot at f2.0. I find it way more doable than using a 70-200mm, at 1300gm which would cause too much physical stress in the long run, and in any case you can only open the aperture to 2.8 on zooms. I use the Canon 135mm f2.0 L, it is a lightweight street-shooting master of a lens, again around 650gm. I just done a video about using this lens on the street, so you can check it out on my channel if you so wish.
    Excellent work. :0)

    After a year with 16-35 2.8, 20-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 - all GM.
I'm loving the 70-200 and consider to sell one of the other two.
Can't decide between keeping the wide one. As you have. Or having the boring but maybe more useful 20-70.
    WDYT?
BTW, i mostly do portraits and concerts. That's why wide isn't something i use regularly.

  • @djenuwine

    You have the choice:
42 megapixels and crop mode make this 24-70mm very versatile. BUT... Why don't you try the 24-105 mm f/4 ?
With crop mode you have a 24- 160mm. And this is why I find zoom much better than fix focal lense now.

personally i learned on prime lenses, which was amazing. i now have this lens and its great because i think in terms of focal lengths. my brain works 24, 35 and 50 to 70 and i think i pretend i have 3 primes and dont have to switch between them. my advice is learn and enjoy primes, then get this. its a stunning piece of kit. im broke and still bought it over the tamron because 24 MATTERS. enjoy

For street phitography and being unnoticed, I can uses either or, or both: My GRii RIcoh, or my 70-300mm ( I can shoot people without them noticing). However, the compression factor with the tele, prevents you from getting a wider scene. However, I also have a 17-70 2.8 (C) Sigma which is a great walk-around lens. Thanks for your video!.

  • @ferdiyansurya

I bought the xf16-55 f2.8 (24-82 mm equivalent) for my fuji system. It’s way massive compared to the standard 18-55 that came with the camera, but you can’t beat it’s versatility.
Size is a bit off putting for street photography in areas where ‘security’ and where privacy is a high concern.

24-70 (f2.8 or f4) married with a 45MP sensor has an epic performance envelop. As you say with a DX/APS-C crop it becomes as 105mm and with image stitching it becomes a wider lens. If I'm restricted for any reason it's the combo I reach for! Great video as always Pierre

Dumped my 28 and 35mm after getting this one - it's just so sharp too. The weight wasn't really an issue, you get used to it rather quickly, and I found it focused way quicker than the 35 pancake or the 28f2 which lent itself way more to a rapid fire hip shooting style.

That's so true. The weight isn't really an issue at all. Glad I didn't believe the whiny users online saying that it's heavy. I'm so happy that I went ahead and bought it because it's freaking sharp and contrasty! Also, I saw a couple of petite photographers who rocked a Sony 24-70mm F2.8 at a wedding all day like it was nothing.

I do weddings and street photography too,for some reason I dont like 24-70 picture quality, I see a huge sharpness and quality in prime lens 35,50,85 mms f1.4, so in last 3 weddings I stoped using this bulky 24-70 lens and now I realized to sale it and keep just a prime lenses + 70-200 g master.
Maybe I am wrong but in my real experience I see the difference.

I had once a 24-70 2.8 for canon and was the lens i hated the most, my hand was hurting all the time without any benefit. So now that i switched to mirrorless there's no way. i'm adding that weight back, i use the 35 2.8 and i have my eyes on the 24 1.4. I wish they make 1.8 and 2 primes

I love my Tamron lenses, the 24-70 and the 15-30 both f2.8's, they have great stabilisation, image quality etc. I also love the 70-200 Canon 2.8. The downside is they are heavier than the moon. I am seriously considering just taking primes or getting a Sony RX10 Bridge camera for street photography, I have heard great things about the Mk4. Then only carting the "proper" kit around for corporate events. 😏😲

I agree with you. And of course its also a cost issue, I just cannot afford 2.8 lenses. I wanted a lens in this focal range for my Nikon so I got a used 24-85mm VR. Its a 3.5-4.5 so 'fast' enough. Its a great lens and im very pleased with its performance.

Hi Pierre. In 2018 you said that beginners should start with mirrorless since DSLRs are falling. Now we are in middle of 2019, Do you still bel, ieve that entry-level mirrorlesses are better options for artistic/night phoography than DSLRs? If yes, what do you suggest to buy for a beginner/intermediate user on budget? Thaaaaaaaaanks

I prefer a small camera for street photography. So its always with you. I like a prime lens. When you practise street photography daily you learn the field of view of the lens. So you know whats In frame. I prefer 35mm lens. Shoot close. No need for telephotos. Street photography is very difficult genre. It takes years To be confident.
I started street photography with 50mm 1.4, Canon eos50, then moved To leica m6 and 35mm. Also used the Fuji x100. I like the rangefinder experience. Hyperfocal focusing.

In my opinion 35mm prime is best for street while 2470 is best for events.
There are usually tons of people during events and you generally do not have to chance to move around freely, so a wide range from 24 to 70 mm would dominate the situation of all kinds of events. While on the street, even in downtown of big cities, it is not as crowd as during events, so mount a prime and use you legs to zoom XD.
(Guess the reason why reporters love using 2470 for work, you got it, same reason as for events)

I believe you want to be discrete when doing street photography and also capture more. Therefore, 35mm 2.8 or 24mm 2.8 prime makes a light package where you can be discrete and capture candid shots.

    • @lakkot.b8695
      @lakkot.b8695 5 ปีที่แล้ว

It's been really on my mind lately, and also the reason why I switched form Sony to Fuji - to have a more compact body so I don't stand out. And I do feel more comfortable shooting smaller, but to be honest, I don't know if it matters from a perspective of a passer by. If they don't want to be in photos they don't care how large they are in your frame, and for most people bigger lens means bigger zoom. So people probably don't care, although I have to say I do car quite a bit
