Frog It’d add some replay-ability if they did what painting paper simulator did and have a way to drain confetti from areas; perhaps as a postgame or a boss who destroys the arena you fight them and you have to repair as you fight... or if confettii had a purpose in battles for an attack, that’d be cool too...

A few things about the battle system...
1) Battling for confetti gets MUCH more common after chapter 1 as environmental confetti starts to get rarer
2) Stock up on coins, you'll be spending them A LOT
3) The ring system actually gets difficult, as my ass has been kicked multiple times during the second chapter
I really didn't enjoy the battles during the first chapter but holy it gets seriously fun during the second chapter.
Hopefully this will shut up all the people who are like, BaTTleS HaVE NO PUrPoSE. Thanks for this though.

This is actually encouraging to hear. I was ready to be disappointed after the gameplay I've seen, but a lot of people are saying it's worth giving a shot. :)
Also all the enemies that are new to the paper Mario series have special attributes that are quite fun to strategize with, example a: gombellas from Mario world in chapter 2

The general consensus I'm seeing with this game is that it's like Color Splash, but better.
You have to play it to see that it isn't like Color Splash but it is better
It is a lot better than color splash in my opinion, it's charm and secrets create a world that's much more fun and creative. The battle system is very fun and original, compared to color splashes sluggish and annoying cards.

Allot of people seem to not know this but you could change the controls after the first section of the game to operate the card system with the joysticks which significantly speeds up the pace of the game.
I'm going to be honest. To me, this game is exactly like color splash. Generic Toads and Shyguys as the majority npcs, battle system with a long tedious start, you can only attack and run, same types of hammers and jumps, you gain the same type of reward confetti/paint and coins, same art style, same type of music, and a lot of references to color splash in TOK.
Yeah The Origami King is Color Splash 2.
In fact, the only thing it does better is a new villain and the attacks not being consumable. That's it really. So for me, it's just a slightly better color splash. Nothing too exciting.
Dustin Tall the battles is the weakest part. Not enough different options to attack. Sure it’s fun but the lacking options will mean lower replay value. Where as paper mario one and 2 for example you can experiment with different partners use different badges to give mario new attacks and passive bonuses and the level of customization is unmatched. Heck even the sticker system in sticker stat while a bad battle system at least had a decent amount of different attacks. And it actually had a decent amount of room for challenge runs like never getting hit by enemy attacks ( yes it’s possible but the route is absurdly wonky).
I really hope that he can get Arl-Os cereal to sponsor him one day, it's gotta happen

Eh I caved in. Only an hour or so in but I'm enjoying it way more than I did with color splash for the environments and the toned down writing which I found to be too much in color splash. Having friendly Goombas, Koopas, etc makes a difference too. Would prefer if they allowed some actual character designs in or at least started diving deeper into Mario's bestiary for the NPCS. They really need to add in some more species from the 3D games, especially Galaxy and Odyssey. Would make the game's world feel so much fresher.

In the place where you need to break the blue ribbon, you can see quite a few unique characters there. It doesn’t have A LOT of unique characters like TTYD, but there’s quite a few in places.

I certainly agree that the whole unique characters thing is a major issue with post-Sticker Star Paper Mario, but we should remember that it was a Miyamoto mandated decision. Doesn't mean the game can't be criticised for it, but it's really disappointing that the guy who made Mario what it is, has now become the same guy who's limiting its growth as a franchise into a completely different genre _that he frankly doesn't seem to know the slightest thing about_ considering he thinks an RPG as uber-basic as *Paper Mario* apparently doesn't need any form of storyline

@@darthvaderreviews6926 Its really bizarre that Miyamoto is so anti-story, as he used to be one of the guys who really believed in the potential of video games on many levels. So weird how he limits his developers at Nintendo so much...I can understand that there has to be some level of consistency within a franchise as big and respected, and it makes more sense with main series Mario games, but Paper Mario feels like the perfect area to branch out a bit. There weren't any earth-shattering characters in TTYD or 64 I would say, but it was just nice that there was some actual world building in the Mario "universe", that characters were sometimes memorable just for their design.
Same with storyline: everyone praises the little storybook segments in Mario Galaxy, but apparently Yoshiaki Koizuma (the director) kind of pushed against Miyamoto for even that little bit of story to be in the game. Its just odd that such an influential developer as Miyamoto has become the source for limiting what games can be when he was once such an important voice against that idea. Like sure, games don't NEED a story, and certain Mario games are fine without much of one, but stories also don't typically hurt a game either.

That’s when fighting enemies becomes more important, you get way more confetti from actually fighting them compared to ko’ing them with a First Strike.
You’ll also be way less likely to run low on coins if you keep battling.
It's funny cos I thought the first few hours were kinda dull.

The point about the world feeling REAL as opposed to Sticker Star and Colour Splash is absolutely correct. It actually makes the "ha ha, everything is paper XD" aspect WORK because these characters actually feel like they're part of the world.
Thats why those 2 aren't rpg's and origami king is. The bare minimum for an rpg is controlling the actions of s character in a well defined world, and the color splash world isn't well defined, but now that origami king has a defined world again along with all the other rpg elements its an rpg again, no matter how much nintendo tells us ot isnt

There's some parts of this game that legitimately made me laugh and smile. Random musical numbers and a toad making a pyramid scheme joke to name a few.

In the blue ribbon area, you can see realistic water which isn’t paper. Also, at least the sky ain’t paper like colour splash lol. Also, there are many different materials in the game that aren’t paper, but most of the world is paper tho.

Something neat I noticed - If you fall into a half filled confetti hole, you make another small hole where you fell in, and that’s so cool to me.

I just passed the third streamer. The ring system is at it's best in boss battles, which makes me wonder if regular enemies view Mario as a boss.
The second world has such an excellent theme and the third has really fun puzzles and some genuinely good difficulty bumps throughout. I have some gripes about the placement of the individual world warps on the world ends, but overall the game feels extremely solid in it's own way so far.
I think this is finally the first truly "acceptable" version of the SS formula. The writing and humor is still as on point as ever, and the mere fact that basic attacks are infinite use (and stronger versions of it are durable and easy enough to get extras of) makes combat on the basic level so much more bearable.
It has some genuine moments that made me tear up a bit, and I can't wait to get back home from work to dig deeper into it.
Acceptable version of the ss formula? This isnt the ss formula, this is pm64 with a color splash coat and a super personality

I’m on the second streamer currently. So far I am enjoying this way more than Color Splash. So far, I think they did everything better in this game. The game looks good, good writing, decent characters, awesome world building, and excellent music. Also just a random thought: the water effect in this game is BEAUTIFUL. Anyone else feel this way? The water looks gorgeous in this game

The dark tone at the beginning of the game is continued a few times throughout the game. I was consistently and pleasantly surprised about where the game took me.

Really? If so, that's a relief. I'm not planning on getting Origami King but I'm hoping that the battle system (Although tedious and annoying looking to play) avoids the problem Color Splash has when it comes to getting and spending coins.
@@jeweledexplorer3305 The battles against regular enemies are just a small part of combat since boss battles are a different affair and there are battles that are real time as well. The game has a lot of variety.

@@eatachodeutube Really? Interesting, I've only seen a small selection of Origami King to see how it was received by the fans and the reviews and public discussions I've seen haven't mentioned the real time battles. Just the basic puzzle battles and boss fight puzzles.
I don't need standard XP for level-ups in an rpg. However, I find it offputting that the enforcement of combat and play is about punishing you for trying to run or restricting and forcing you into needing to do it, rather than putting in a satisfying positive incentive.
The reasoning behind them is closer "fine" rather than "ugh" from recent entries. But a more rewarding system (and doesn't have to be XP!), can make someone WANT to get into fights

This game succeeds in where color splash and sticker star failed, I’m actually surprised on how much fun it is and dang I actually like the battle system

I'm loving the game. The battle system was way too easy at first and annoying, however as the game progresses it gets much more difficult and much more rewarding to line up the enemies. The world is vast and beautiful. Easy must buy for me. Defeated the first 2 bosses and right now would give the game a 9/10.

Bruh where were you the first few years of Super's release? Super is Paper Mario's Pokemon Black and White and by extension, the equivalent of Brawl and Sonic Unleashed. People absolutely DESPISED it for the longest time and now people are starting to like it because of how different it was. I can guarantee in about 5 years, people will be PRAISING Origami King just like Super. Hell, people are starting to praise Color Splash as we speak. Sticker Star getting positive reviews just proves that there are people who like every Paper Mario game.
Also Arlo has complained about Nintendo numerous times. Did you see that video he did of BrawlBRSTM's termination?

When the enemies are scattered throughout the field in an awkward formation, that’s when I get stumped on the ring puzzles.
At first, boss battles seem really complicated and it takes me a couple turns to figure out a plan. And sometimes I don’t realize what move I’m supposed to use until AFTER I’ve already set up my path. (If that makes any sense.)
(I just finished chapter 2 btw. Awesome chapter. Love the Feudal Japan themed amusement park. Lots of enemy variety, you actually have a party member and they do attack in battle, love the music, dialogue and settings have so much charm.)
Without spoiling the limit of confetti does have an effect later on

I beat the game yesterday, and dang if it wasn’t a good time. The environments, music, and dialogue all have a great flow to them and it becomes hard to put down. Not a thousand year door, but it isn’t trying to be and I like it

Sounds like enjoying a good album while looking at an interactive panorama. With a vinyl that skips whenever it wants. And an art piece that has random office desk supplies taped onto it.

Music is something I don't really notice but it does subconsciously make it much better
Mario's head bops to the beat and I adore that. They really nailed his expressions in this game.

@@mathewdempsey16 Idk, if you mess up a puzzle, a lot of enemies won't go down in a single hit and enemies do a ton of damage. One wrong move could cost you like 30 HP early on if you're not careful.

Welp, this convinced me to buy the game today. Heading to Walmart after work.
So many references to other Nintendo stuff in this game: Luigi riding a Kart, Luigi talking about his experiences in the Mansion games, Whispering Woods (Whispy Woods), the fact that they actually had the Arms theme singer when you revived that tree, etc.
So far ive destroyed 3 streamers and I am quite amazed at the character development and how much deeper the story goes than what we thought. I seriously recommended this game.

The coin issue in my experience: Whenever I accumulated a five-digit coin count, I encountered some big-ticket items and spent most all my coins. I rarely ever felt my coins were meaningless.
The ring system in my experience: It's a pretty fun gimmick that adds an extra challenge to battles, but I'm too stupid to figure out the boss battles. There's just too much going on onscreen and too little time to figure it out.
The accessories are less like badges and more like the boots and hammer upgrades from the first two games.
The "overworld" isn't really connected from what I can tell. Each streamer begins where the last one ends. It's just level-progression.

But at least it feels engaging and more "connected" than SS or CS even were.
What I mean is, Nintendo at least put more effort into making this more of an open-overworld type of game than level progression.
gundham tanaka yea the ost and sound design is sooooo good. Different renditions of the battle theme, the main theme being a musical motif throughout, and all of the area music are such good songs and a lot of awesome jams. Anyone encounter that starman theme? 👀
In the 11 hours since I posted this comment, I have played more of the game andthus must update my impressions. SPOILER WARNING.
My opinion on the overworld is no longer accurate. Everything feels connected and natural, rather than linear level progression.
I am finding more occasions where I don't have ENOUGH coins and must battle to farm some more.
I am enjoying the battles so much more, though I'm still an idiot.
I am repeatedly amazed at how attached I have become to the characters. One of you allies, I won't say who, actually sacrifices themselves for Mario, which hit me HARD.
I am loving this game, it is almost, if not, on par with the first two, a d I will definitely be replaying it for years to come.
Bait10 see your coin explanation makes a HUGE difference in terms of game quality. I'm okay if the game throws thousands of coins my way if most good things cost tens of thousands of coins. Problem with previous games is you would be thrown thousands of coins, but things only cost hundreds of coins, so you always have plenty..
The museum located in Toad Town has all of the warp pipes for each streamer.
I'm 5 bosses in, and I really like the game so far. I really like the battle system, too. After the first or second boss, you get the ability to instakill enemies in the overworld with a jump or hammer attack if you're strong enough, and your strength scales with the Max HP hearts you collect, so that encourages you to seek them out in hidden areas. Collecting toads also helps smooth battles over, since the more you've found, the more will throw support items and damage into the ring when you spend coins to have them cheer you on. The accessories have been pretty good so far, too. More time on the puzzle clock, higher Defense when blocking, higher HP in battle, shop discount, a bell for when hidden blocks are near, even a new skin for the confetti you throw. You can only have one from each category on at a time, though (except the last column, which lets you have 2), so you can't just put all the HP ones, or all the timer ones or something.
You do get the sense that they've made genuine effort to balance the gameplay loop and keep it from feeling tedious, and I appreciate that. The characters, as you said, are more believable and enjoyable, and do have some touching moments. The game doesn't even undercut some of those moments with jokes, like they would have done in the previous titles. The characters are allowed to have less funny moments here and there.
This feels like a step in the right direction. It may no longer be an RPG, but they've adopted more Adventure genre aspects that make the game still feel robust and enjoyable. Adventure isn't a bad genre for this series to shift into, especially if they're going to put the kind of care and attention I've witnessed so far into it.

@@millis6054 That's actually a really good idea! The battles do become more challenging that way, with your only power boosts coming from if you solved the puzzle or not. Also, since your default hammer and boots don't break, you can also do a no-weapons run if you wanted. The game doesn't force you to buy or use additional weapons at any point, afaik.

Feel free to try it out yourself, I’ve been working on this run’s rules for a few days now since I beat the game, another rule I was thinking was to limit confetti to only the ones you get in fights, except at start when you first get the bag, that way the fights are even more important
Man, I am so glad you are enjoying it. I watched a couple reviews and the comments were FULL of people just shitting all over the game. I am several bosses in and absolutely loving it so far. I have only played sticker star which I hear isn't great, so my opinion may be a bit skewed. This game really does feel top notch, though. I was starting to get a bit worried due to all the people hating the game. I thought that maybe they were seeing something I wasn't. I realize now that they are honestly just missing out by skipping this.

I only have two streamers left to do. Im genuinely surprised how much stuff is packed into each area. Also it's just so wonderful to look at that it makes me want to find every little extra thing in each area. Plus they give you a list of how much you've collected in each location. I'm looking forward to finishing it
I’m on the yellow streamer and everything so far has been amazing. The story is a roller coaster of emotions at times and the dialogue is very funny. Sound is also good.

For most of the video it just felt like a confirmation of all the things I was worried about, but when you showed those tree characters it was a real ray of hope. Original character designs, in a Paper Mario, imagine that. I'm still not gonna spend $60 on Origami King, but It seems like this might actually be a step in the right direction.
Eh talking trees are nothing new. King olly looks more unique. But all recent paper mario games had one unique character this one tried.
@@RinZDR I kinda forgot about Olly because he's tied to the paper gimmick, and I havn't really seen anything to suggest he has more to him than just, like, being the villain. But the trees seemed to have their own thing going on.
Too bad it's all weighed down by the Toads. In one interview they said they chose a green toad for the forest area and that was all the care they put into it. It's a damn shame. I'm willing to bet the Tree characters were snuck in under the radar by a rogue employee who wanted to put some small amount of soul in

It's a puzzle /adventure game. You go in the game with a puzzle solving mindset. You solve the puzzle battles will finish themselves basically. You mess up the puzzle .... Youre bak to playing color splash but not as bad. So bottom line solve those puzzles.... Plus the amazing ost helps feed your puzzle solving thinking.

To be fair, Tanabe's hands are tied. If there's anyone to blame for all this, it's Shigeru Miyamoto himself. This is just me, but I have a feeling that the only way the old Paper Mario will ever return is when Miyamoto retires and, say, Yoshiaki Koizumi becomes the new head of the Mario series.

@@TwilightYonder720 All the current problems with Paper Mario stem from Shiggy. You read the interviews and such detailing the development of Sticker Star, and they say outright that Miyamoto criticized the game for being too much like TTYD and demanded a whole bunch of changes that led to the game being like it was. As for Tanabe and the likes of CS and TOK, in Tanabe's own words:
"Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it's no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe."
Meaning that Miyamoto's calling the shots and Tanabe is just following orders.
@@KingdomHeartsBrawler I know Shiggy had a part in it, but just pointing out PM is specifically has this problem when other Mario's don't have THAT many limitations comapred. I feel like once Intelligent Systems gets new blood staff and some guys like Shiggy and Tanabe move away from it PM could go back to being fresh again
Sure the battles don't give exp and the only way to get stronger is to find the HP+ hearts (looks more crystal than cardboard), that will also up your base attack so that one can defeat weaker folded soldiers with a pre-battle attack.
- What do battles do?
Give coins and confetti.
- What does coins buy?
- Better attacks ('Weapons', Breakable),
- Accessories,
- Consumable items,
- Trophies,
- (Cute interactions,)
- Help in battle;
- Cheer
- Time.
- What does Cheer do?
- Based on how much money one uses (more does better effect) the Toads that are saved (more Toads higher spending roof) will;
- Spin the board (not in boss fights),
- Give healing,
- Give items,
- Give weapons,
- Show the route Mario will take (boss fights).
- What does Time do?
- Gives more time to figure out the board.
The battles aren't turn based anymore (arguable if the boss fights are) they are puzzles and it shines in the boss fights where the strategy is to:
A: Figure out what attack is needed
B: Find the best place to attack
C: Get there
With each boss having a different way to do those things while also putting ways to mess with the board. (There is a letter on the board that gives clues/tells you what to do and it isn't that hard to get in Marios path)
The folded soldier fights are mostly line them in the optimal way and use the right weapon. With the right weapon and putting the enemies in the right spot one can clear a fight without taking damage.
TL:DR: Battles aren't what they were but they are damn good for what they are.
but that's the problem though if battles only give you coins just to lose coins to make a battle easier just to get coins back it's just a pointless loop, there's the optional collectibles but those aren't required at all. EXP/progression system is needed since stuff like that is exclusive to winning battles and will make spending coins more satisfying since your character is getting stronger from winning battles then spending 150 coins just to make the battle easier and win back 210 coins
and confetti spawns everywhere so that doesn't matter
I really, REALLY appreciate the soundtrack so far. Also, secret hunting is a total delight. Looking forward to explore more, so for me, it gets it's job done as a fine game.
Been playing for an hour or 10 now. Gotta say, the game is throwing so many creative things at you, that battling just gets more fun and fun. Color splash made battling a chore, this game makes it feel like a nice break from exploring.
I just stopped playing and was thinking "oh I wonder if Arlo has gotten to play this yet"

I’ve played through the red streamer section and I love almost everything about the game. The battles do honestly get repetitive, but it isn’t too bad considering there are more accessories and items you unlock throughout playing. There is also a specific item (I don’t want to spoil anything) that I really like and is sort of a replacement to experience points,
I had never played the Paper Mario game before this and I have to say I'm 5 hours in and having a lot of fun the battles don't bother me and I don't see them doing so later in the game. But I'm like games that grind I have over 200 hours in Slay the Spire on the switch. And bout the same on PS4 also.

Take your time arlo, I just beat it and I must say, you are gonna like it, if I had to describe it, I’d say it’s a middle ground between both the old and new, and without a shadow of a doubt, a step in the right direction
It’s great that they give you a variety of options for combat though. The machos, the bosses , the wave battles , and as you get stronger you can kill the overworld monsters in one hit so you don’t have to do the puzzle .
I’m really enjoying it, and glad to hear I’m not the only one who has issues with some of the puzzles .. I feel like I’m missing easy solutions too, but some are tough.
Also the dialogue. I have laughed multiple times . The toad who sarcastically thanks you for freeing him so he can work his 18 hour shifts. The guy who denies being a contrarian. Great writing even for the one offs
