DC Comics Make You Regret Coming Back Every Single Time

- Eric Breen learned a lesson she should have already known this week. DC Comics will always make you regret coming back. DC Comics are a brand without a true identity. How can a company publish Batman/Superman World's Finest #17 and Hawkgirl #1 in the same week? Wes and Eric discuss his enormous regret giving DC Comics another shot after several strong comics like Superman, World's Finest, Green Arrow, Green Lantern and Flash. DC Comics make you regret coming back every single time.

The worst part is they think the relationship drama is why people read superhero comics. This is not the romance section you can add it to bring depth and feeling but it's never the focus. DC used to be the house of writers this is sad.
Honestly, you _can_ do relationship drama... in a series or property _built on that_ ye twits! You can do that off brand stuff as long as the on brand stuff is still doing well.
@@Sorain1 I agree it's a balance the problem is often they don't understand that balance. Or for that matter who the characters are it's all about political agenda's now.
Congratulations on hitting 30k, Wes!
Has been with your channel since 2019, easily my favourite comic book related channel on TH-cam. As a guy who lives in a country where very few people read comic books, your channel means a lot to me. Love and respect from Bangladesh.
Wow, thank you!
Trying to like modern Marvel or DC is exactly like being in a abusive relationship. You remember the good times. They promise you they've learnt their lesson and things will be like they used to be. But the moment you let your guard down they'll kick you in the teeth again!
This hurts
Eric said something very profound in describing some of these hack writers - they never really spent much time talking to people face to face. I'll take it a step further and say these individuals don't know how to have human interactions of any kind. To be so narcissistic that everything you write is a self-insert speaks to a truly disturbed mind that has to pretend to be a person. It's so frustrating, but thank you, Wes, for continuing to bring attention to it, and congrats on 30K.
"You want to immerse yourself in the entire universe" Absolutely nailed it
I always like a Breen appearance. He keeps it 100 + honestly, you get some good folks on the channel. One person who’s missed & I haven’t seen a lot of is Joe Corallo who’s ‘alright Wes, how are you?’ & I’m a Fatal Jay fan. His positivity & keeping a smile is inspiring & makes me so the same! Just wanted to up your guests, as you guys play off each other well & you’re a gentleman & a scholar Wes
It’s likely that the Hawkgirl series would become a Galaxy series because Galaxy in this comic teaming up with Kendra Saunders Hawkgirl to defeat someone.
Congrats on hitting 30K, Wes! We’re all along for the ride! Keep up the amazing work!
Congrats on 30k
I remember when This channel was 12k. What a year
DC is that abusive partner that said they changed but never does.
Always great to see Breen on!
Wait. What? Kendra is going to become a lesbian and she and Carter aren't really a thing anymore? That's not how you write Hawkgirl. Re-read the JSA run from the 2000s. Kendra rebuffed him at first, but as time progressed, she realized they were emotionally and spirtually bound together. That's how you write Hawkgirl. She still was her own character, but realized that Hawkman was who completed her. And she completed him. You can tell these people have never had a real relationship in their lives.
I don’t know, I think it should be easy to write a decent Hawkgirl book. You can do action, street level crime, some super villain and an ancient artifact … doesn’t sound like a specially difficult book to write. But yeah, from your review, that book was written for an audience of one, the writer.
Happy 30,000 subscribers, Wes!
"Galaxy: The Prettiest Star."
With a launch title named that, I dunno how this character didn't become as popular as Superman right away.
The writer describes himself as a "lovely woman, a world changer". We all know what this world is changing into.
Congratulations on hitting 30K!!!
I have no doubt your channel will continue to grow... I'm a lifelong comic reader and I love visiting your channel to hear your thoughts about comics, the industry and all the related topics you touch on... Keep up the great work!
Thanks 👊
Congrats on 30k! Always appreciate a Breen visit.
this is exactly how I feel about Tini Howard on Catwoman.
She hasn't been writing a Catwoman book, she's been writing a Tini Howard book. Nothing that has happened in the last 2 years is something that Selina Kyle would have done.
The whole relationship with Valmont? That was just Tini writing out her fantasy. On her Instagram she's even posed like one of the panels from her Catwoman run.
She's clearly self inserting and yet she's been renewed for another arc after Gotham War. Her run has been selling horribly, fans of Catwoman hate her, and yet DC won't take her off the book. How did Adams get taken off of The Flash but Tini is still on Catwoman?
When even Reddit is calling you shit....then boy you done goofed
Green Lantern: I found recent DC comics in my refrigerator.
Congratulations Wes. For awhile I wanted certain characters to come back, but now more than characters I want my favorite writers to come back. I want to see stories by Gail Simone, James Robinson, Chuck Dixon and Jimmy Palmiotti. They will do Justice to my favorite characters.
I also want to add if people want to write a established character then plan your stories and do your research. Stay true to the character. But, you have your own agenda don’t ruin the character for the rest of us. Make a new character that you can tell the stories you want to with.
3:16 The artist for the Hawkgirl series is Amancay Nahuelpan.
People are still reading DC?
I think at this point, they're only writing for their small cabal of gender specials and not actual paying customers.
Learning the Jokers identity wouldn't shock me..but having one woman hit on another and the other woman saying "nah, I'm only into dick." would actully be shocking.
I recently picked up the Sword of Azrael TPB and it was awesome.
...
There is no ongoing Azrael comic of that quality so that's all i've read in ages from DC.
Congrats on hitting 30K subs man.
I've just been hunting down and re-reading all the Mark Millar verse titles since Big Game. Damn those are awesome, forgot how great Nemesis and Wanted were.
OMG WES. FKN LOL. ‘I’m going back to my comic book shop…!’ The visuals 😂 I needed that.
Great analogy by Eric. This civil war seems to playing out in every aspect of life and entertainment. Theres those that want to create, be open minded and successful versus those that push agenda, brainwash and think success and hard work are toxic
Ive been reading comics for 30 years . With cost of living ive had to cut down my comic book pull list to 5 books each month . It hurt a lot ! but DC was there to help with night terrors replacing every book this month i only had to pay for one book a "james bond" and it will be the same next month too . Thanks DC
Congratulations on hitting 30k Wes!!

Hawkgirl wasn't Fitzmartin bad but it was really bad. I'm so tired of narcissistic self insert "writers" that just want their Twitter feeds illustrated, the hell with proper characterization and plot
Awesome work guys
Great to see THE BREEN again!!
Congratulations on hitting 30k Wes..
The easiest way to avoid "regret" is simply to not come back.
Maybe I'm being hypocritical though, as I am tempted to buy the upcoming Godzilla & Kong crossover with DC and will probably buy the "Scooby Doo and Krypto Too" animated movie, mostly because it has of course the real Daphne & Velma, but also the REAL Jimmy & Lois as well!
But I'm still pretty much done giving any of their mainline crap any money.
The scooby doo and krypto movie was canceled. It's the third Csooby movie that was canceled despite being finished. Fortunately it was leaked online but its not available for purchase.
Pre-owned market. Corporate get zero profit. Cake and eat it. 95% of my DC stuff past two years all off resellers.
@@batman369able Trailer just dropped on this site yesterday amigo.
They ARE releasing it.
I was shocked to see that but the thought of all that potential income being "Yarr-Harr'ed" from them must've been too much.
@@PrivateCitizen84 Yeah. Probably the best way to operate these days.
DC likes snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
DC comics are shit in diaper .gave Batman a try and was lost. DC no thanks.
If you never come back, you can't regret it, right? Exclusively back issues, here. DC used to have amazing books. Monthlies and events. But serious question: if it wasn't for content, would you read new DC or Marvel?
The audience, the real audience, who bought comics, read them, had pull lists and such, aren't coming back, until all these self absorbed people are fired.
I started picking up comics at my LCS in 2016, and every year the number of DC comics I was picking up continued to drop. It's a shame.
Congratulations 👏👏👏🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Me: i am enjoying dc.
Dc: oh really? Well here's knight terrors. Now what were you saying again.
But ngl DC destroys itself every time they get momentum.
1:46 Dawn or DC is more of the second part than the first part of what you’ve said.
Breen hit a good point. I'm a bit over 40, and im not get off my lawn old, but kids, say 20 or so are essentially aliens. We don't speak the same language. I think it is possible to write a good Kendra Sanders book, although I personally don't want to read it. Robin can be a separate backup character. Kid Flash, etc. As George Carlin said, not every ejaculation deserves a name. Brutal, but true. A one shot featuring say Moon Knights kid sidekick is cool, and they did a five part? story with him years ago in ASM. And he's done. I liked Jack Monroe, but what can you really do with him?
The thing about comics is you can kill a character and basically they are in stasis until a proposal comes along. But some things can't be retracted. It's like the joke about a pregnant woman and a lightbulb. Turning Jon Kent or Tim Drake gay... If you sleep with a man, you are gay. Can't really walk that back.
Another point Eric had was how Zack pointed out years ago about the phantom audience. He probably wasn't the first, but he was dead on. How many depressed sexually confused people buy comics? It doesn't really exist. Bud Light and Target are learning this lesson years down the road.
When I was reading Green Arrow by Chuck, it was a little ambiguous how Connor went. That's fine. He wasn't flamboyantly this way or that. Ollie and Roy are kinda gross to be honest. Those guys both have some kind of VD. Connor was a man unsure of many things. He probably didn't think or know much about well, anything except archery and kicking ass. It was basically Action Comics presents: Green Arrow. That's what I want.
I hate to see the hawks where they are. Hawkman is in my top 5 favorite characters ever. And he has super high potential - hawkworld miniseries, geoff johns, Peter david and venditti, all great shit.
1:23 Indeed you are, in your own unique way, Wes.
Just read what you like and enjoy it as it’s own thing. Just because Hawkgirl wasn’t up to par doesn’t subtract from my enjoyment of Zdarsky’s Batman, PKJ’s Superman, or Waid’s World’s Finest.
Zdarsky Batman is very soso.Your Daredevil is very good but your Batman is average in the best.
Oh, the guy who's main motive is to tell everyone to stop criticizing DC and Marvel.
Just skip to his videos of recommending comics. You don't HAVE to listen to his gripes with certain comics.
@@imnotfromfrancewheeler2678 That’s never been my opinion. I just think it doesn’t make sense for a creators work to be discarded all on account of someone working on a different not doing that good of a job.
@@CoreyAdolfi Well, as the two mentioned in the video (and as I've even seen for myself in that Young Justice spin-off comic from last year) having a book like that Hawkgirl comic is a telltale sign DC still isn't getting it together. That means it's only a matter of time before another hack SJW writer gets their hands on good / popular series and slaughter all hype and interest for it yet again.
In addition, Hawkgirl has fans, too. Wes seems like one, so it especially sticks out to people like him. Blame DC for not firing these weirdos yet.
@@imnotfromfrancewheeler2678 That’s ridiculous. Punish one for the mistakes of another. Throw in some paranoia over “SJWs” and it supersedes just being ridiculous.
i am done with DC because they ruined Jon Kent...and Tim Drake. I didn't learn my lesson after they destroyed Alan Scott. Super Sons gave me hope, but Bendis tore it down.
I’m a big DC fan, and I keep hoping someone will get the DC comics right and keep the writers on mission. Was a fan of Rebirth because it was stated the the DC universe being robbed of key relationships between various characters resulted in the anger and disconnect of new 52. Wonder Woman was given her claynorigin back and a mystery of someone messing with her timeline - why and how? 80s Titans were brought back as young adults with a story playing off what was then Wonder Woman’s false memories BUT no one acknowledged the discrepancy. Then, these young adults were literally placed on a timeout by their mentors in JLA like they were 12 year olds.
Rebirth started out great. Dawn has promise. Then, DC drops the ball. The characters and the stories are already built in with over 70 years of foundation. If a writer comes up with a great idea- here is the best idea- don’t recreate the established character to fit the story- create new characters who the established character cares about. Let the established character help, aid, and be the hero for the new characters learning from the experience and showing development in understanding the changing world around him or her.
And for god’s sake, bring back the real Raven from the 80s/90s. She was not goth or weird for sake of being weird- she was someone who had been raised to withdraw from her emotions to keep her dad out of her head and later grew in power of healing, teleportation, and untapped potential. And her costume b,ending into scenes enhancing her mystic presence!
I never go back to regret it. I gave up western comics in 2015. Bought one Marvel comic in 2019 (first issue of Deaths Head) and instantly regretted it. I won't make that mistake again or waste my money. I accept modern western comics are not for me.
I'm a moron, you said Western comics, and I thought you were talking about cowboys
@@vernonsanders9696 Haha yeah I can't stand those damn cowboy comics!
Congratulations Wes! Well deserved achievement.
So what side is mark waide on ?
batman beyond was on point no L there
Im enjoying what good there is at Dc if you read Joshua Wlliamson its an actual story with action and such, Superman is good now batman and a few others that u mention and then crap like hawk girl that I didn't pick up or tim drakes robin story.
I'm enjoying Titans, cyborg, Worlds finest, Worlds Finest Titans, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Flash, Shazam and Batman. I was going to pick up HawkGirl, but I will not now. If its Like Robin( One of the worst comics Ive ever read) I will stay far away from it.
I love comics
Every time i see jon kent comic I'm scared to read it. Cos it's messed up in so many level. It's different with the supersons story. Good art, good story, good conclusion. Just make comic book that's for comic book readers.
Do you remember how good was DC in the 1990s? Superman, Batman and the others were really good there. This time were for me great. Comics were comics and not political agendas or platforms for woke soaked activists. I hope that they will remember it again soon. 😏
I'm working on a book very soon the key to saving comics will be written because comic book industry is the most profitable industry and the most and the greatest form of visual storytelling is just that it's been set up to fail since the '40s by the film industry and audio industry because no one can keep up with comics when it's producing content
I'm a long time DC Comics fan, and at one point I did drop all of the DC books. I do want to come back, but only to good comics and characters that I like. Geoff Johns on The New Golden Age, the Justice Society of America and Stargirl: The Lost Children has been enjoyable for me. After reading Hawkgirl #1, I cancelled my pre-order for issue #3. As you pointed out, Hawkgirl taking a hit for Power Girl (who could take it), only to fall out of the sky and have to be saved by Galaxy. I'm not a fan of all of the LGBTQIA+ character inserts in DC Comics. I'm ordering Power Girl, and the Fire & Ice series, and I hope that they don't get messed up by writers with their own agenda. Even though I am a JSA fan, I will not be buying the Alan Scott Green Lantern mini-series. I will be reading the Jay Garrick Flash mini-series.
Yup! Tough to be a DC fan right now, but I am still ordering more DC than Marvel🤷
That's why I stick with elseworld comics
It's amazing pretty much all the good Marvel comics are 90s throwbacks written by Peter David. And DC with Jeremy Adams off flash World's Finest is pretty much it
I'm reading/collecting back issues only since after Future State (giant waste of money). I may check out World's Finest.
Which is honestly super unfortunate because the newer Batman beyond books are so good
The issue this week was dope. The story is actually moving forward from the show and the Max Dunbar on art is a treat.
I only read Kendra in Geoff Johns Hawkman. Hated the character. She was too good for the handsome, jacked, cultured, rich SUPERHERO Hawkman and left him holding his D in his hand the whole series, making him look like a chump (making this probably my least favorite Geoff Johns DC run.)
Her fans are mostly from the cartoons.
That was Shayera, not Kendra.

Eric says he’s not the target audience for these books; I don’t think that the audience they are targeting exists.
How many times have we seen them churning these crappy, terribly written books out there, aimed at pleasing weirdos on Twitter, and none of them sell. Because that audience don’t read comics they just exist to tear stuff down.
For every rebirth of 1 year there is an infinite frontier of 3 years.
I'm glad that DC is at least putting warning labels on their "pride" comics. i wish someone warned me before i dropped $5 on X-Men Winter #1
This reminds me kind of how bad My Adventures with Superman is, they get the characters wrong, everyone's out or don't look or act like the characters from DC. It tries to be funny, but isn't. The character designs suck and the animation isn't that good at some points. Wes if you ever have the time you and your son might can check it out, so you can review it. It's awful though, lol, to see how annoying and worse it gets after each week. They swap, bend or get characters completely wrong.
I agree with your points about My Adventures with Superman but I counter with...
Brown tomboy Lois 👌
@@pickles168 It's a waste of a good character design.
New 52 and DC Rebirth were better than that. I like not what they make now. It's a punch against everything DC has done in the last few decades. I want the old stuff back.✌
I was fired as a customer by DC when they announced gay Superman, along with many other characters being en-gayed. Never went back.
I'm so glad I stopped reading dc comics
The main these stories are so bad. These writers do not care about legacy of DC characters. All they care about is their self insert characters. That's why these are so bad. And congrats on the 30K, Wes
I think Venom is the best of Marvel personally
I cant go back when I never left.
1:37 PKJ’s Action Comics gets ignored every time in favor of touting Superman when Action is the superior Supes book! No offense Josh but you have many apologies to make for these awful events before I start recommending your work again.
I'm good. I'll stick to my DC comics head canon. These weirdos can keep their self-insert characters like Galaxy.
People just buy covers they don't even read the comic. If you took Jenny Frison off Poison Ivy variant covers I guarantee it would not sale at all.
Venom and Carnage are pretty good for Marvel too. I am enjoying Knight Terrors. Cant really tell what your issue is.
Knight terrors is a mega discounted black lanterns story.
@@jackiechan2524 Umm how? They are dealing with completely separate things lol
@@jackiechan2524 these are fans who are casual collectors or brand new, both have no passion for the characters/shared universe.
It's so funny. I'm wondering how is that possible to be so dumb 😂
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me”?
Wow! Well you guys read more of Hawkgirl than I did. I don't think I made it past the first three pages. I wanted to give it a chance but the writing just wasn't engaging enough and it seemed as if the writer didn't know the character that well. I haven't read much Kendra Saunders but I remember where she debuted and this just wasn't it.
I feel like some of the writers today do the same thing Disney has done with Marvel and WBD; they've taken a marquee value or at least very familiar franchise or character or mega comic story event - used it to get the established fans interested, excited and talking about the project and then they tickle the fancy of the mainstream audience and generate their marketing there and once they get everyone invested it's a bait and switch.
The idea being they just want to take things with high nostalgia value, introduce it to this new generation or what have you and gas light their potential interest in it by saying: "look, this is one of those old projects that people really liked back then, but where doing a modern version for today's audiences." The immediate pay off for fans of the original that build in fan base Hollywood loves so much, is a big fat "F-you" to the face "we fooled you again" type of thing.
I used to want to root for DC to finally break through, I really thought they would've figured things out with 'Black Adam' but they just proved that it would be just a waste of energy and time. it doesn't seem like they will ever materialize into the entertainment machine it's always had the potential to be. 2nd place is 2nd nature to DC.
At least I know not to buy Hawkgirl. I hated that they turned HawkMAN black in the BA movie. I refuse to watch it. I unfortunately got TWO versions of the Superboy gay kiss comic in Ollie's packs recently. I read through it and then it hit at the end and I swear I said out loud, "I knew it!". I just had a feeling that was the comic everyone was talking about. I'm not here for the message. Thankfully I haven't gotten many of those comics recently. The Dawn Of DC books I have gotten have been good. Though I admit it's only a few of the number ones. I even got most of the initial Knight Terrors, though I haven't read them yet. I have recently gotten back into comics and I'm trying to navigate the landmines of woke narrative and gay-forwardness in comics nowadays. I've been doing ok so far but the Superboy comics (both covers) and the DC PRIDE crap are all going in the sale pile. They're in perfect condition if anyone wants them. :) It's summertime, maybe you need some kindling for your grills.
This is a reminder that the First DC Comics ever published will become Public Domain in approximately 7 Years.
Why do I bring this up? Oh...No Reason.
DC is the Pacific Garbage patch of comics and deserves only to be read on the high seas! Yo ho me mateys !
YA fiction readers are not going to read a Superhero book, because they already have YA fiction.
Superhero book readers are not going to read YA fiction because they like Superhero books.
Is there some crossover? Probably. Is it a significant enough amount to put off the rest? Based on current sales figures, fuck no!
You aren't going to sell steak to vegans by putting it in a salad. But you can sell the steak to meat eaters, and the salad to vegans if you keep them separate.
A transexual man, who transitioned into a woman, then called himself lesbian and wanted to reiterate that they're a lesbian woman - is just a straight dude wearing a dress.
I just cannot fathom why they have to go through all the hoops. Its even to the point that they're making themselves look creepy or sex obsessed for doing that.
There’s a simple solution………don’t come back. I know I’m never coming back, why on earth anyone would go back to read their gibberish I’ll never understand.
I had high hopes for rebirth
i got every superman book they made
Then bendis
The two 'factions' should they exist, is old schoolers and Hollywood. And Hollywood has more money.
You READ the new DC??? I just buy the covers I like and go read some old Geoff Johns stories.
Wes, you should take a look at the first sentence in your description, it made me giggle. Gotem.
This garbage is exactly what's kept me off investing in anything DC. Until they remove it all, replace all the staff responsible and publicly apologize to fans, I can't support them.
They have really gotta get new colorists or stop directing them to make pastel feminine colors in every comic too, it even made it into world's finest. Also a lot of this flat, cheap digital coloring (digital can be good), has got to go. What are the chances for me to want to own comics that look cheap? BAD COLORING RUINS GOOD ART
It honestly depends on the artist on what colorist they should get. Some artists need darker colors, others need very vivid, or pastel, or muted. I'm surprised we don't see many artist/colorist teams where they always work together and are associated with each other more often
@@sleepy_koko yea we need more teams again, "Liquid!" comes to mind
