    Excellent and very helpful work Alec, really appreciated! These are mics that I am obtaining now, once Senn gets production back. My focus is wildlife-ambient nature, but I keep coming back to your opening baseline at 1:20, it's so deep and rich through the whole song. The sound through your demo song is gorgeous. Makes me hopeful for deeper wildlife calls etc.

    Other mics to check out that are on the classical music recording level are DPA and Schoeps. It’s so great to hear a recorded sound that sounds exactly like the source.

    • @alecbrits

      Absolutely! :) I cannot wait to get my hands on some DPA mics. I’ve always been a big fan whenever they are in a studio. What a game changer these classical mics are. Absolutely stunning.

    The engineers at azica records in Cleveland gave me a really good piece of advice once. They said, “if you want to make something sound good, plug an mkh 8020 into a millennia pre and point it at it.” I never forgot that and they’re right

      100% yes. :)

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, if you point any mic THIS good at anything that doesn't sound like crap and run it into a great pre, it's gonna sounds great.
      In kind of... goodsense. I get it, but then that doesn't tell you anything about making anything actually sound *right* for what you want on the record. Of course any combination at this level is gonna sound beautiful... and?

    Really excellent recording. I have 13 of the mkh8000 series, and ten channels of cranborne camden. Of all of the patterns, the wide cardioid 8090 is probably my favorite. In the classical world, a pair of wide cards with the 8020 pair on very wide flanking stands, it sounds like a record. Hearing your work here with identical gear in my kit inspires me. Top video and review!! Have you highlighted the cranborne mic amps in a vid?

    • @alecbrits

  • @hekhopop

    Thank you very much for this awesome test. Would you still recommend the mkh8020 in a home studio environment without treated room?

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Hekho! :) I would be apprehensive to advice them in that scenario, unless the untreated room sounds the way you want it to. They will sound like the room, so if you enjoy the way the room sounds, then that is what you will get. :)

    Wow! Great performance and great mics! How does this compare to the MKH8040, the cardioid version? How much room does the 8020 record? My room has got not the best acoustic. Thanks & a happy new year! Keep up with your great work!
    I have two small Lewitts, but they sound a bit too modern, too sterile for me.

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Thorsten! :)
      The 8020’s pick up a lot of the room. So room treatment is a large part part of how these mics sound. I have not tried the 8040’s yet, but if they are anything like the 8020’s they will be balanced, quiet and very very easy to work with. :)

    Actually trying to figure out which combo of 8040, 8050, 8090 I want to buy today weirdly! Im really buying them more for cinema grade SFX & Foley, but I think the truth of these microphone is that the 8040, 8050 and 8090 just sound fantastic on everything.
    Im going for the 8090's as the stereo pair, as I have heard that particularly for ambiences and large rooms, they are just superb, and manage to maintain enough of a central image so as not to be jarring when listened to alone.
    I'm wanting to fill up the center image with something solid though and choosing between the 8040 and 8050 is a nightmare. I think Ill just go for the 8050 as it is likely more intimate and more useful in a wider range of situ's...
    But you cant really find any good demo's of the 8050 like you can with the rest, I'm going by word alone. Which isn't a great feeling a £1k a pop...

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like you have made up your mind! :) did you get them?

      @@alecbrits I'm actually just waiting on a couple quotes back, so nothing finally, but hope to order today or tomo latest. I should say I'm also getting an Austrian Audio OC818 to cover LDC duties. Though I'm not going to lie, I'm tempted to just get a pair of OCs and a pair of 8090s.
      It's so difficult to make the final decision. I'm looking for the most "all round" High end mics of the bunch, a small collection that can turn to most applications with ease and great quality.
      Any opinions about the choices? What would you get with crica 5k?

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Rufus! :) totally different sonic to the earthworks stuff. The SR25’s will naturally have a higher noise floor than the MKH8020’s. The earthworks SR25’s are omni, while these are cardiod. So they have a different tone. I’m a little more partial to the Sennheiser’s.

    Well.
    Fck me, that is the best mic I have ever heard, ever. I have no idea how I never heard of those before... you can literally run a studio with 6 of those and record for grammy winning artists. Jfc at this price-point it's hard to justify buying an 87 yet alone a 251. What in the world have been we been sleeping on!!!
    Like a warm and heavy blanket... so warm, and smooth. There is gravity to the sound. Phenomenal. Also by far the best demo of any gear I've ever heard... well ever. Top level stuff. I wouldn't have cut off the piano at 80Hz tho... 80Hz on a good piano like this is delight to my ears, and you can always roll it off after the fact...
