    this was amazing to listen to, thank you!
    I am looking for a flute with a deep tone, longer tones, that I like to use for mental clarity and healing, what flutes and brands that will last for many years can I look into'?

    Thank You so much for explaining and demonstrating what the differences are. I have a much better understanding now. I am assuming the melodies were you improving? They were so beautiful.🕊

      You are welcome! Actually I played a simple scale with each xiao and then I perform the song 枉凝眉 (Wǎng níng méi) or "Vain Longing." It is a really great piece.

    Thank you for your wonderful and helpfull turturials🙏
    Something else you could perhaps point out would be what you should pay attention to when buying. Also how much should you invest to get an instrument that is easy to play and sounds good?
    It would be nice if you also added a few links to dealers here

      As for recommended xiao, I personally fill orders with good quality xiao. There are demonstration videos on my Discord Channel "The Ways of Wudang." Putting new demos up today!

    Thank you for you're beautiful content. As a flutemaker, i have to say there is also the Tang Xiao wich has exactly the same mouthpiece as the Shakuhachi and is the mother of the japanese Zen flute. Traveling in the Tang Dynastie oder Korea to Japan.

      I have been seeing this lately. The first time that I saw one, I thought it was just a weird hybrid. But it makes sense that those variations still are around.

    When looking around at xiao online, I keep seeing information about "6 hole xiao."
    Besides the obvious, what is the difference?
    It seems all yours have 8 holes.

    • @WuDaoMusic
      @WuDaoMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The fingering pattern will be different. An 8 hole xiao is more modern and easier to play. With a 6-hole xiao you may have to half-cover holes to get the right pitch. An 8-hole xiao is the standard today.

      @@WuDaoMusic I figured it was something like that but I hadn't found any information saying that explicitly. Thank you very much!

      Many years ago, when I was studying the dizi in Hong Kong, my teacher presented me with a five hole Xiao in F. I had never seen such a flute before and I asked the teacher what it was called. I think he felt he was supposed to come up with an English name for the flute. Of course, there is none! So, after thinking about it for a while, he said, "It is a flute for sitting under a tree." I hold the close to my heart now when I play my 8 hole xiao in G.

    Please explain what is the functionality of the two bottom holes of the flute at the bottom of the flute (often they are on the back of the flute)? In theory, the third hole from the bottom is the lowest note of the flute with all playing (finger) holes (eight) closed, and it turns out that the wavelength is limited by this hole. Why are two more holes needed below, for what reason?

      For tuning the bass note.

    • @ghostofcapt

      @@kongwee1978 Thanks for your answer! Yes, I understand this, but why are there three of them? For example, bansuri flutes most often use only one tuning hole. In Native American flutes, several are used, but they are all located on the “cross section” of the flute, that is, they are at the same distance from the foot of the flute. It often happens that the flute is simply cut to the desired length and no tuning holes are used at all.
      Why doesn't a flute maker simply move the location of the tuning hole or change its diameter to achieve precise tuning of the flute using just one hole? Why are there three of them and not one or two or zero (by cutting flute)? I don’t understand the reason for this, is it just a tribute to the tradition of crafting or is there some more compelling justification for this?

    • @kongwee1978

      It can be two, four or six. From some maker comments, it affect upper octave timbre.@@ghostofcapt

    • @WuDaoMusic
      @WuDaoMusic  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It depends on a bunch of factors I believe. Often the deeper key dongxiao are longer because it gives a better resonance for the lower pitches. The holes are then added for tuning purposes, but the length of the flute adds volume and body to the overall timbre. @@ghostofcapt
