This can also explain The Darkest Day (the war with AZ). And the run off from the Mega Stone energy could make Gigantamax. I'm curious how Legends Arceus (set in the past) will elaborate on this.
My only issue with this theory: Doesn’t the game straight up say that the Illumina pokemon were around BEFORE the meteorite hit? Wasn’t that like the big plot twist of the game? We thought the meteorite created them but it turns out the power was much more ancient?
Bird Keeper Toby Hey that’s fair! It wasn’t brought up until the very end after all, they do kinda blindside us with it. I love this concept of the 1,000 year meteor shower. It would explain so much. I can't remember if it was a theory, interview, or what, but I heard a while ago that the creators were originally going to explain where Pokemon came from, and that the original concept was that real-world animals were still around. (Think the days of the first season of the anime - back in the 90s) They later decided to quit referencing real-world animals and didn't talk about the origins of Pokemon, beyond stuff like Mew and Arceus. I wonder if the meteor shower was intended to be the origin of Pokemon life. It could also explain the vastly different species in different regions. Different species come on the meteor shower each time, so each region has whatever happened to land there or what has migrated since.
This is tangental to the main point of the video, but you mentioned Meltan disappearing 3,000 years ago, and I'm wondering if the king of Kalos used Melmetal to help make his ultimate weapon (because, you know, it makes metal out of nothing), and after the weapon fired, Melmetal (like Eternal Flower Floette) fled in shame for its part in the devastation, and that's why it hasn't been seen until recently.
Arceus would be a more appropriate final Illumina Pokemon instead of Xerneas. If you're counting the movies then Arceus is important for the meteor theories as he protected the planet from a meteor shower.
I'd not given Captain Vincent much thought before this theory video and I'm not sure if the timelines match up or not but... could Vincent be the professor that brought Cyndaquil, Oshawott and Rowlet to feudal Sinnoh? 🤔
If they got their degrees by doing theory videos, I just promoted you from bird keeper to professor now! What do you want your plant-related-name to be? I vote for Professor Perch, because... birds and trees. Lol.
One thing you seemed to overlook here, comets are giant balls of ice larger than planets. If jiratchi came from a comet, it certainly has nothing to do with the meteorites.
Iirc the Unovan Dragon that split into Reshiram/Zekrom/Kyurem also arrived in Unova on a meteor, which landed in (and created) the Giant Chasm. Just to add to the "powerful Pokemon and world shaping events being linked to meteors" thing in Pokemon. Definitely a recurring detail.
Now that I think about it, Jirachi and Deoxys share some alarming similarities - namely, that their heads generally have three points, or that the most important part of their biology is located on their torsos. For Jirachi, that's its third eye, and for Deoxys, that would be the crystal core. Adding on to that, Jirachi's yellow ribbons look like auroras. Some additional thoughts: A significant portion of many meteorites is metal, which could explain Jirachi's steel typing. If Jirachi and Deoxys were created in the same instance of comets being struck by AZ's ultimate weapon, then Jirachi would have been the first to fall, and would have taken most of the iron and other precious metals with it (or them), and therefore there wouldn't be much metal left for Deoxys, which could have contributed to its crystalline core and far more malleable body structure. Between Jirachi's shiny and normal forms, the colors that change are teal and pinkish red, which are Deoxys's colors. If the yellow of Jirachi can be considered the most metallic portion of the mythical sleepy bean, then the pink and teal are more organic, or at least, less metallic. When further considering the color palettes of Deoxys and Jirachi, the sheer yellowness of a shiny Deoxys makes me wonder, therefore, if that particular Deoxys has a thin veneer of precious metals (such as gold) over its skin, just like Jirachi, but not enough to gain the steel typing. Have fun chewing on this! :D
New Pokemon Snap is honestly one of the best Pokemon games I've played in a lonngggg time, it has puzzles that I haven't even figured out just yet (Im playing through with no spoilers basically). I was sad when I finished the storyline, kind of hoping they would do something like expansions for the game itself. Or maybe they continue with making similar snap games. Wondering if you might have some thoughts of the Volcarona lumina 'twins'. They didn't really address the fact there were two of them or even why there might be two..
When I first saw the Lental Region Map the first thing that came to mind was that it could jolly well be a Hoenn had Team Aqua succeeded. The resulting islands roughly match the positions they would have in regular Hoenn, bar the desert now on the left of the volcano. Florio Island roughly corresponds to Littleroot, Founja Jungle to Petalburg Woods, Elsewhere Forest to Meteor Falls. Maricopia would be the deep waters near Pacifidlog, while Durice would represent Shoal Cave. Aurus is then the stand in for Sootopolis Not much regions have both an active volcano and a desert, in extremely close proximity.
This just makes me think we really need a Legends: Rayquaza game. Toby you might wanna do a video on what that could look like. Imagine it taking place either 1,000 or 2,000 years ago, right before one of the foretold meteor showers, and you ARE actually a young Draconid living at what would eventually become Meteor Falls, maybe a precursor to Fallarbor Town? Maybe instead of your typical Grass/Fire/Water starters, we get choices between Swablu, Bagon, or Trapinch. All three are Hoenn native Pokemon that eventually evolve into powerful final stage Dragon types, and 2/3 have a Mega Evolution, and I imagine a Legends: Rayquaza would explore the lore and origins behind Mega Evolution a ton. Maybe Flygon would even be given a Mega Evolution by this game. Of course, I think using the theme of imported starters from other regions would be fine too, but for the setting of actually being a Draconid, it would be fitting to have Dragon-type starters. Also, alternate title if we're going with mythicals as a theme would be Legends: Jirachi, I think they could easily spin the lore of the Draconids to involve Jirachi, and deeps in the caves of Meteor Falls seems like an appropriate resting place for a Jirachi.
It would be interesting if this implied that, based on what was in this video if I interpreted it correctly, perhaps Deoxys and AZ's Eternal Flower Floette are Illumina Pokémon. Also, perhaps they made a wish on a special meteorite like the one found in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald known as the white rock. This being the rock that when you bring a wish tag to it, you get the chance to catch Jirachi. What I mean to say is that Jirachi may have been the meteorite used to wish for Rayquaza's help. Jirachi granted the wish, transferring the wish and energy to Rayquaza, who had eaten other meteoroids, allowing it to Mega Evolve. Lastly, that orb that Xerneas turns into looks an awful lot like a large Mega Stone.
Also if you don’t mind my input, he never made it to durice, and the photo has a breviary, and you only find it there, what if breviary was his pokemon partner? And braviary made it to durice but the researcher didn’t as in, maybe lost at sea and didn’t survive?
I'd say there is no confusion about the Illumina Pokemon. Them being the ones most affected by the meteorite doesn't nullify the rest of the story about the meteor essentially creating them and scattering the illumina glow across the region. It just means that the Pokemon most affected by the meteor became the Illumina Pokemon. No confusion in the writing there.
A hundred years late to the party, but I thought that the Crystalblooms looked like the Ultimate Weapon back when I first saw them. Awesome theory, or more like, 10 theories at once. 😁
Holy crap!!!! I just realized the ultimate weapon looks like an illumina flower. I can't remember weather Toby said anything about this in the video, I haven't just watched it, but if not then...I don't know but I think it's interesting.
Well I learned that Xerneas, Jirachi, and Volcarona are in this game and they are some of my favorites! Might eventually have to get this game. Got the nostalgia factor anyways!
Very interesting theory, and some great ideas as well. I just have one question. Wasn't the mural at the end of the game showing that the illumina Pokemon existed before the Tellur meteorite, that the illumina Pokemon are older than 2,000 years?
Watching this now in 2023, got me thinking... 2000 years ago a meteor fell on the Lental region. Also 2000 years ago was the first mention of the Great Crater of Paldea. Maybe there's a connection there?
My real question is why is the meganium so big? As I was playing through I noticed that none of the other illumina pokemon seemed to be any larger than what their pokedex entries have them recorded at. Meganium appears to be at least three or four times the size it normally would be as it completely dwarfs his little friend pokemon (I don't want to put too many spoilers in case someone hasn't played the game yet). When I first saw it, I assumed that all of the illumina pokemon were going to be giant versions of regular pokemon as a call back to those couple of episodes of the anime with the giant ancient gengar, jigglypuff, and claydol. Ooh, maybe meganium a few thousand years ago was that big but interactions with humans led smaller meganium to thrive while the larger ones died out?
Did you forget the move wish maker where Darachi isn't in the inlands? Darachi is watching over a completely different desert like region. This Darachi hibernates for a (was it a coupled hundred or a couple thousand years?) long time. Wakes up for seven days to absorb the comets energy witch is why it woke up in the first place. Makes a friend and then returned to hibernation at the end of the seven days giving it's energy to the land until the next appearance of the cement many years latter! Technically it shouldn't show up in snap at all with this preestablished lore. However, I could belive that it's another Darachi. A Darachi unice to this reagion. After all they never say that legendaries are singular pokemon. They are just so rarely sighted that it's belived to be only one. In a few cases I would say there are only one like with Arcaus, Palkia, Garatina, Dialga. Those are the only ones that I believe are a single individuals off the top of my head as an almost garintie. I personally think that xerius and yeveltal also only exist as a single individual. Then again their are those games where Archus just give you a new Palkia, Garatina, or Dialga so there is that to be said too. Maybe their are more legendary individuals then we realize. After all they are hardly known and rarely spotted even from a distance let alone encountered personally meaning we don't know a lot about them as a whole. There could even be areas were they are incredibly common and the other Pokémon are rare.
Amazing theory, I wish GF would hire "lore experts" to make a proper pokemon world/worlds (alternate realities) lore because common lore is so messy and incoherent. I would love to watch a small series like pokemon generations where a character (a professor probably or a historian like Cynthia) explain the history and myths and lore of the pokemon world in each episode chronologically. It would be such a treat. But let's be honest they will never do that.
Toby could you do a fun video about what a Pokémon legends game or a game based on the Regis would be and would look like? To me there is so much mystery and lore attached to them that would be so up your ally. I would love to know the full extent of there power etc. I had a cool idea that the forms we’ve known are like there base forms but they could have a crazy awakened form
"There aren't other Pokemon that glow unless you throw an Illumina orb at them..." I have to disagree. I have pictures of glowing Swanna flying around the park at night (without throwing an orb at them) and when I got a picture of a glowing Crystabloom on the second island (to unlock the orbs for that island) I only found the glowing Crystabloom because there was a glowing pokemon sitting in front of it and I threw an apple at him to make him move. 😂
This may be the first theory video you've made that ACTUALLY makes sense. Also in the first season of the anime you can see Clefairy and Clefable dancing around a meteorite ("The Moonstone")

1:55 Long lost cousins!!?
Iris isn't a orphan anymore!
Well, I mean she would still be.. But she's not 'alone', she has a family! Yay!!
Arceus would be a more appropriate final Illumina Pokemon instead of Xerneas. If you're counting the movies then Arceus is important for the meteor theories as he protected the planet from a meteor shower.
Solid theory. I like it. ANOTHER!
Also, *LOOK AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH!*
Ahah ty ^_^
Everytime I do it makes me laugh
I'd not given Captain Vincent much thought before this theory video and I'm not sure if the timelines match up or not but... could Vincent be the professor that brought Cyndaquil, Oshawott and Rowlet to feudal Sinnoh? 🤔
Ohh how cool that would Be!
Vince was around the lentil region 100 yrs ago. So prolly no feudal connections unless some divine involvement by dialga happened...
That would only have made sense if all those lines where in the Lental region, but they aren't. Only one of those is in the game.
@@nickdentoom1173 Agreed, plus I don't think the timelines match up. I was too keen to join the dots 😅
@@meiji_tom Which is totally fine, its just speculation after all.
@Bird Keeper Toby
4:00~
They glow and have light-up patterns?
You can throw "Illumina Orbs" at them?...
Illumina || Terrastalize?!?!
(2022)
damn, this one actually makes sense!
gives me 2014 pokemon fandom vibes.
If they got their degrees by doing theory videos, I just promoted you from bird keeper to professor now! What do you want your plant-related-name to be? I vote for Professor Perch, because... birds and trees. Lol.
02:24, 02:36, 06:29, 13:54 - Sentiments that have never stopped a single Pokemon theory.
The phraise is "A picture is worth 1000 words" not "An image tells 1000 stories "
Blah blah blah
Bandai givin us the lore we need
I just recently got the New Pokémon Snap and I enjoy the game play. It's amazing and I haven't gotten very far.
Pokemon snap 2 Tod snap snaps back is an amazing name
Now that I think about it, Jirachi and Deoxys share some alarming similarities - namely, that their heads generally have three points, or that the most important part of their biology is located on their torsos. For Jirachi, that's its third eye, and for Deoxys, that would be the crystal core. Adding on to that, Jirachi's yellow ribbons look like auroras.
Some additional thoughts:
A significant portion of many meteorites is metal, which could explain Jirachi's steel typing.
First like and comment! Thanks for the continued stellar content, Toby! Love the new style of your content and quality for sure :D
awwwww thnak you for noticing :D

Ooooh this is another fun one! Never thought Jirachi would be somehow involved!
Yeee ^_^
Commenting for the algorithm- you deserve more love!
It is impossible for all future pokemon games to look like this
Professor mirror being reformed mirror b. Not speculation. Confirmed ! As far as I’m concerned. Love it !
Miyamoto makes me love bidoof even more
Today the drip is sauvemente~
New Pokemon Snap is honestly one of the best Pokemon games I've played in a lonngggg time, it has puzzles that I haven't even figured out just yet (Im playing through with no spoilers basically). I was sad when I finished the storyline, kind of hoping they would do something like expansions for the game itself. Or maybe they continue with making similar snap games.
Wondering if you might have some thoughts of the Volcarona lumina 'twins'. They didn't really address the fact there were two of them or even why there might be two..
So ...
This makes me wonder about if this game takes place before or after the Kalos game
6:25 Was I the only one who thought it was because the character you play as is an ancestor to the person who originally explored the islands?
You mean descendant
The person who explored the island would be *your* ancestor
Also just have to say this I also agree that all the Pokémon look so good they are so amazing and that intro part was deep
Bruh all I want is that fresh Steelix shirt
When I first saw the Lental Region Map the first thing that came to mind was that it could jolly well be a Hoenn had Team Aqua succeeded.
The resulting islands roughly match the positions they would have in regular Hoenn, bar the desert now on the left of the volcano.
Florio Island roughly corresponds to Littleroot, Founja Jungle to Petalburg Woods, Elsewhere Forest to Meteor Falls.
Maricopia would be the deep waters near Pacifidlog, while Durice would represent Shoal Cave. Aurus is then the stand in for Sootopolis
Not much regions have both an active volcano and a desert, in extremely close proximity.
I enjoyed playing New Pokemon Snap it's fun even though some of the illumina spots are hard.
Ngl it would be so cool if the Pokémon worlds history was ours
The various meteorite events also explains why you find deoxys meteors in various regions
I love this kind of theory
Yey ^_^
Another amazing job Toby
This is pretty hype.
When they were more effected by the meteorite for a clear reason... They exist, They're naturally glowing unlike the pokemon that we use on.
Very good video !
The darkest day was when Eternatus fell from the sky in an egg/orb so that fits.
Very interesting theory, and some great ideas as well. I just have one question. Wasn't the mural at the end of the game showing that the illumina Pokemon existed before the Tellur meteorite, that the illumina Pokemon are older than 2,000 years?
Let's be honest, Toby is the Vsauce of pokemon
Watching this now in 2023, got me thinking...
2000 years ago a meteor fell on the Lental region.
Also 2000 years ago was the first mention of the Great Crater of Paldea.
Maybe there's a connection there?
This was a very fun theory
Yess jirachi
This is an awesome theory
Toby the other way for Deoxys to come about is through meteor impacts. Not all of them are through lasers!
Would love to see your thoughts on connections between illumina Pokémon and the lord/guardian Pokémon in Legends.
This makes a lot of sense
Amazing theory, I wish GF would hire "lore experts" to make a proper pokemon world/worlds (alternate realities) lore because common lore is so messy and incoherent. I would love to watch a small series like pokemon generations where a character (a professor probably or a historian like Cynthia) explain the history and myths and lore of the pokemon world in each episode chronologically. It would be such a treat. But let's be honest they will never do that.
Pokemon snap meowth secret lore 😱😱
I think of lental as a bunch of islands surrounding Hoenn.
I may well ^_^ Thank you :D
I hope New Pokemon Snap is meant as a proof of concept. Giving possibly of an amazing looking game in the future.
Offffft what a backhanded compliment :’)
How do we get mew to spawn? I've completed the whole story and I get in front of the 2 morlul on the night jungle level and mew doesn't spawn. Am I missing something in the main story? All of my levels are at least a 2.
