The thing that I always LOVE about generation 4 is that they decided to give us deep mythology as to why the Pokémon world is the way that it is. There’s so much deep history in the Pokémon lore that Sinnoh/Hisui is literally the pillar of the Pokémon world. Hence why I think they decided to release Legends Arceus first. So we can understand the original power and why Arceus, Palkia, Dialga and Giratina fit in the lore. Their original power. Idk I’m excited for this because there’s so many ways the story can go.
about the Veilstone Myth, i always imagined that the Pokémon the human speaks to is just a small beast Pokémon like say, Mightyena or Absol that disappears by running into the fog, but the point you bring up about Alpha Pokémon is pretty convincing, that people and Pokémon became separate due to that human's actions and Alpha Pokémon are the ones exacting that toll
I always assumed it was Giratina or Shayman. Giratina disappearing into the Distortion World since Turnback Cave is by Veilstone. Or Shayman angrily states it will attack humans or starve them out because the human was ungrateful, resulting in it leaving the area.
The Japanese version of Sinnoh Folk Story 3 is very specific in that it means actual marriage. The word used in Japanese is a form of the verb 結婚する, though written in hiragana けっこんする and conjugated in the past tense as けっこんした. The exact meaning of the verb is exactly "to get married", like through a wedding get married. I imagine GameFreak wanted you to interpret it like the many myths in Japan about humans marrying yokai, like the common getting married to a kitsune fox stories. So the humans marrying Pokémon doesn't sound as strange from this perspective, since it's very likely inspired by those yokai one.
I'm so happy that there's finally going to be a whole story tying into our Mythical and Legendary encounters in Pokémon Legends Arceus. I'm also looking forward to possibly shiny hunting the Sinnoh Mythicals
Manaphy might be a bit of a stretch, unless you were one of the lucky few who hatched a shiny one from the OG Pokémon Ranger game, but I commend the determination nonetheless.
The whole "Original One" splitting was kind of just an interpretation of the time of trying to understand how the Pokemon universe came to be. It's a lot more likely that Dialga and Palkia along with the Lake Guardians were created by Arceus in a similar vein to the Sinjoh Ruins event. The line "Set free from the Original One" could actually be the Pokemon hatching from the eggs created by Arceus, "setting them free" could be related to how they were trapped inside of the eggs but now hatched. If Arceus actually split, then it would have obviously lost a lot of its power, but that simply isn't the case, especially when Arceus has the power to create a member of the Creation trio with no splitting involved. Also the "Original One" could literally be the Arceus we are used to seeing.
I think every region from Hoenn onwards has a fair amount of mythology/lore, mostly because of the legendaries. But Johto and Kanto definitely need much more lore.
Kanto only really has Rocket + "Modern Mythos"//"Lore", Giovanni created Mewtwo from Mew's DNA, etc. Johto has the Tin and Brads Towers & Ho-Oh + Lugia, the Beasts + Birds...
The depth that has been added to this game and this region is amazing. I wish the mythicals from gens 5-8 would have had so much more, like what significance do Volcanion or Diancie have? I want there to be lore, I want the legends and myths to be special. Mew, Rayquaza, and Deoxys were done right. I hope that for future gens there are less legendaries/mythical if necessary, but more story, more quests.
Eyyy, always wanted somebody to breakdown Sinnoh myths, since they were super interesting but also so weird! I was intrigued, but definitely confused as a kid when I first read the myths - still am, now that I'm all grown up now, actually 🤣
Wow, there are so many myths and legends in the sinnoh region, this is one of the longest videos from your channel that i have seen. Also, you explained them really nicely.
Maybe this personified Sinnoh that we see in the trailers is the name for "the original one" as we see in these myths - Arceus when it was whole or had all its energy. Or maybe even Sinnoh is the name for the creative energy of Arceus, and during the plot of LA it uses Sinnoh, this energy, to create that lightning strike thing from the trailers? Idk, it's such an exciting thing to think about
I can't wait to play this game, free to enjoy it because I haven't looked at the spoilers or the leaks. I like this summarised deep dive into the myths of the Sinnoh/Hisui region because I can learn about everything quite quickly, I am grateful for the clearing up of the Japanese version of the myth about people and pokemon "marrying" each other.
I can not wait for this game to come out, I’m really hoping for story and duration. Every game I’ve played can be played within a month or two. I really want something that will put up more of a fight. Great video as always
There's the issue that the word used is 結婚. There are words for marriage in Japanese that are used in the way Toby described such as 添う, but this one means marriage explicitly.
Its interesting watching this after the game came out and seeing where some of these interpretations were right, where they were wrong, and the ones that got no reference in the game. Oh, and you missed the myth/story about Floaroma Town, the big flower patch that refused to grow until someone expressed thanks.
Nothing like binge-watching BKT videos! I miss doing this, I'm so glad I'm watching the videos again- your evolution theory from years ago was so iconic! And the editing is better than ever! Such a feel-good channel
I really like how the games seem to have a big story/a lot of lore. It brings so much life to the game I definitely think it is much needed after the recent games haven’t had much of a compelling story
Happy to see a full breakdown of the myths. And having them all in one video is great. It's hard to say if Dialga and Palkia and the lake trio separated from Arceus or that Arceus created them. If they separated from some original being, then doesn't that mean Garatina did too. That would also mean in order to get the original pokemon you have to combine 6 pokemon with Arceus, and that also means we'll likely never see this pokemon like how we likely won't see the original dragon in Unova. Maybe I'm looking too deep though?
I absolutely cannot believe the impact this game has already had on me and it hasn’t even come out yet. Just learning more about a region I ignored while I was “too cool” in high school and college has really broadened what I thought was a wide knowledge of the pokemon universe. And THIS is furthering those horizons for me. Thank you for all that you do. P.S. It’s refreshing to see creators such as yourself who don’t just dump on everything due to preferential minutia
Hearing all these myths makes me wonder more about the "original one" and how Arceus may be similar to Kyurem in that it is more of a husk of a greater being. Maybe Sinnoh is that original being, and it would be so dope to experience a pokemon of such a caliber not even to catch but just experience! I also really like the thought that Noble Pokemon are the giants referred to on the plates. Anyway,.. Thanks for going through all these myths. The lore introduced in this region really makes me soooo excited and drawn in to kind of "uncovering" the secrets of the pokemon universe. I am hoping LA leans into that. Brings me back to the joy I experienced with doing the puzzles at the Ruins of Alph and exploring the Ruins of the Sevii Islands back in the day :)!
I actually really love those theory!! That would be so cool to see. Plus it would give a reason to name the region “sinnoh” in honor of the region being the hub for all the Pokémon stemmed from it
@BirdKeeperToby I DO actually think the "Veilstone Myth" is actually referring to Zacian//Zamazenta. (Zacian specifically), as when you find the Rusted Sword in SWSH, it's broken in half, in a "ruins" like area... Also, the Pokémon disappears into a "hidden" place? Sounds like the Slumbering Weald.
I guess, now with the game out, the celestic town cave painting might be the story of the red chain or the origin ball catching either Palkia or Dialga
I like the idea that "Sinnoh" is the Original one birthed from the first egg. In separating itself to create the pokemon world it split into 4, time, space, matter and a husk/ figure head. I feel Arceus as it is now is equivalent in strength or slightly stronger than the others but has the ability to channel more power or even re-absorb the others and become Sinnoh again. Thus potentially destroying the world in the last days, ragnarok or biblical revolation style.
Thing to note; The English translation takes some liberties with the Original Story. It mentions a vortex, a turbulent chaos, a heart of chaos, right? Well, in the Japanese version, these three separate mentions are not actually separate. They're all just the same word; The swirling chaos. Japanese is a language where context is often implied, which doesn't translate well to English. So, they translated it with more separation, which ended up leading to confusion. Dialga and Palkia are called "bunshin" in the Japanese translation. Bunshin is a term with many different meanings, but it implies a kind of mitosis. You can call bunshins twins, avatars, clones, partitions. Like Toby mentions, it is possible that Arceus separated parts of himself to make other members of the creation trio.
Great video Toby! I've always been fascinated by pokemon's lore and history in Sinnoh and the other games, and I can't wait to see all the new lore we get from Legends Arceus. In fact, I'm waiting to post new chapters to a fanfic I'm writing about pokemon folklore until the new game gets released (my character Professor Maple explores different pokemon folktales/fairytales from different regions and explains their significance/history/etc.). If you or anyone else is interested in reading it, let me know and I'll post a link.
Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf around a red circle? Is the red circle perhaps an Origin Ball - A pokéball made from the Red Chain? It would explain the absence of Giratina being depicted.
I actually thought about the Veilstone myth some more. I think it ties into Sinnoh Folk Story 1. They both talk about the importance of not wasting food and not taking Pokemon for granted. I would actually connect these myths to Shaymin.
I am really excited for the game to come out... There are many mysteries to unravel that many of us want to know and understand. Again I am really excited about it
Talking about the Veilstone's Myth, I have a theory connecting to it. 3000 years ago, people used pokemon to fight a war for them . Which would require Pokemon and people to have some sort of connection. But in this game, Pokemon and people live sperate, meaning that there's no reason for Pokemon to take part of a human war. And from what many of us are guessing, this game takes place just a couple hundred years in the past, so that leads to two main conclusions. Either this some how takes place before the war, meaning it's 3000+ years in the past, or it is a couple hundred years in the past ( this is assuming that Pokemon didn't forget about this war, hopefully they haven't, or that Legends is part of the two Pokemon universes). Now, it taking place 3000+ years in the past, is most likely not what is happening here. But if it is true, Gamefreak has to explain that well in the game. Now, if it were to take place just a couple hundred years ago, there's a huge gap between the war and the period this game takes place. Which leads me to strongly believe that within this time gap, Pokemon and humans began to live separately, either as a outcome of the war or the ultimate weapon or from some events that started the war or mabye from a event we never heard of before or even from Veilstone's Myth. So let's say Pokemon began to not trust humans because any of reasons I listed, not including Veilstone's Myth, and since pokeballs still didn't exist, humans didn't have a say in this and couldn't do anything because Pokemon are far more powerful than them. So this starts the sperate lives of the two groups and after 2000+ years, almost all humans don't know a life of human and Pokemon living together , mabye to them that is a legend or myths of the past. And if the ultimate weapon was used, AZ is the only human who has lived a life with and now without Pokemon. And if most the Veilstone's Myth is true, then there was a time where the world of Pokemon , didn't have pokemon existing. And if this time lasted maybe around 100 years, then the sudden return of Pokemon would catch people off. These humans don't know how or even what Pokemon are and probably fear most of them. So most humans try to find a way to live sperate from Pokemon, so they can survive and live peaceful. This is just what I could gather for this theory. Hopefully the game can give us some clues to explain the timeline more.
It might be possible that the war 3000 years ago wasn't known in Hisui and Hisui didn't participate in it. The war might only be known in Unova and Kalos which are far away from Hisui.
about the Veilstone myth, I believe it's going to be a plot point in Legends: Arceus; maybe the reason you the player are being attacked is because somewhere at somepoint someone has/is/was attacking the pokemon callously (maybe Rowan's ancestor?)
The Veilstone myth...The fangs and claws are referencing the lake trio since in the game they give you a claw, a fang, and a plume. I think the pokemon the human talks to is one of the lake guardians.
I can't wait to see how PLA changes the context of all of these myths and stories. I hope it really fleshes it out and explains a lot of what we've seen in DPPT/BDSP and makes it all make sense, like those weird ancient buildings in the park, while giving us even more to chew on.
I think this is the first time I've seen Legends of Arceus be abbreviated as PLA which made me do a double take. PLA is also a type of plastic used in 3D printing XD (Not telling you not to use that acronym, it works fine, I just have goo brain)
@@jeffbrownstain oooh, I see, using the full acronym when referring to ALL of them and all the differences therein, and not just the remakes by themselves is unreasonable and insane, but policing the shorthand language of a rando in the youtube comments of a fandom theory video 3 months after the fact... is reasonable and sane behavior. very normal and hinged. fascinating. good to know! learn something new every day✌️
I interpret the painting in Celestic Town as the 3 lake guardians creating Giritina to “Bind Time and Space” as described in the Plates Myth. They created Giritina to sort of quell any conflict that Dialga and Palkia have so space and time don’t become distorted and potentially harm both humans and Pokémon. I could be reaching but it also seems that the painting appears sort of “behind” Dialga and Palkia outside of the cave so the lake guardians sort of created Giritina secretly “behind their back” but like I said that part might be me reaching a bit!
I believe that arceus made giratina as a precautionary measure if something were to happen to arceus or the world, a guardian hidden in the shadows, a dark knight.
I definitely think it's cool that they refer to Sinnoh as a deity of sorts, really adds to the character and personifies the region itself as some wise sentient and kind god
17:01 I'm not sure if this was just an error or if you were unaware about this, but those "eyes" on regigigas are not eyes at all, but rather sort of gemstones attached to its body. Its actual eyes are the black dots. Not judging at all though, up until recently I thought the same and it is weird, I know
I think the first sinnoh folk tale may be involved with evolving bastulegion: it's pokedex entry involves lots of the dead merging as one to form bastulegion and this is what we're seeing in the tale, dead pokemon returning
In regards to the plates having two different times they are accounted to being made, this could be drawing inspiration from the Shinto myths where Nippon was the first area of the world to be created.
These myths are incredibly interesting The Japanese Pokemon and Humans getting married Then finding out more about a Froslass and her Human husband apparently If the Arceus plates are a result of creating the Universe of Pokemon That means Arceus originally was EVERY type A "Infinite" Type if you will
with the cave painting and the pictures depicting the lake trio, bringing together all 3 gets you the red chain (thats how Cyrus gets it), the red chain could be what the red dot circle in the picture represents, not sure if the red chain can or does summon/bind/allow a person to control either dialga/palkia and maybe if either time or space are in some way under threat or in danger, arceus could appear and deal with whats happening in the world, maybe to prevent its destruction. food for thought :)
Rise up secret audience! I enjoy that parts of the myths are unclear or open to interpretation. These aspects are often lost to time with real life tall tales, and it is interesting to hear how a person's background shapes their perception of those stories. The myths help with world building too. It's like getting a second page on the Pokedex! Now where is my myth about why starter Pokemon are so rare...
The thing that I always LOVE about generation 4 is that they decided to give us deep mythology as to why the Pokémon world is the way that it is. I feel like it’s Hisuian Zoroark
@jojo i like that idea too.. it actually could even play into how Zorua was driven to extinction
Maybe hisuian zorua or absol?
Anyone else notice how the sword is a ruinous treasure that snapped into two like the sword in chien pao’s mouth
I always assumed it was Giratina or Shayman. Giratina disappearing into the Distortion World since Turnback Cave is by Veilstone.
Or Shayman angrily states it will attack humans or starve them out because the human was ungrateful, resulting in it leaving the area.

You blew my mind with the Japanese translation of the marriage part. I never ever thought of it like that. Kudos to that one sir!
I loved Sinnoh purely for it's lore. It's amazingly rich for someone that just wants to go talk to people and investigate the world around them.

Absolutely love this sort of video, can't believe how close your predictions where @10.18

I DO actually think the "Veilstone Myth" is actually referring to Zacian//Zamazenta. (Zacian specifically), as when you find the Rusted Sword in SWSH, it's broken in half, in a "ruins" like area...
Also, the Pokémon disappears into a "hidden" place? Sounds like the Slumbering Weald.
Having played legends arceus for 25 hours already the game gives alot more details about lore without spoiling anything its such a good game
I guess, now with the game out, the celestic town cave painting might be the story of the red chain or the origin ball catching either Palkia or Dialga
What if Ho Oh & Lugia are called the Mighty Johto & the Sinjoh ruins is a place where 2 different kind of people could pray to their gods?
I would love it if we learned more about the myths in this game!
The final countdown has begun and I am VERY excited!

I watched the new trailer today and I keep getting more and more excited this game is gonna be good

im so mad tho, my delivery of the game got delayed from the poke center :(((
I love these myths and as much fun as it would be to see them play out I would prefer something left unanswered so we can speculate
thank u! more people need to know the history of pokemon not just playing the game I hope there's more to come! thank you

I love your videos of myths and theories … It’s a beautiful learning experience every time.
Thing to note; The English translation takes some liberties with the Original Story.

Yay I'm part of the secret audience!
The game looks awesome. Love ur vids! Keep up the good work!
about the Veilstone myth, I believe it's going to be a plot point in Legends: Arceus; maybe the reason you the player are being attacked is because somewhere at somepoint someone has/is/was attacking the pokemon callously (maybe Rowan's ancestor?)
Bruh, we saw rowan's ancestor komodo you forgot? Man is a beast
The Veilstone myth...The fangs and claws are referencing the lake trio since in the game they give you a claw, a fang, and a plume. I think the pokemon the human talks to is one of the lake guardians.
Never been excited for a Pokemon game in years.
I shouldn’t have laughed as hard as I did when Toby said “Darn Gosh it” but I guarantee you I’ll still be giggling over it when the game comes out
This was fun and something I needed, thanks!
I miss being able to watch your videos and I'm very happy to be able to again
17:23 maybe the red circle is the red chain. I think this because when you get the red chain you get it in a circle from the Pokemon
I agree, I really hope they do this for all of the other regions
I’m excited for this game it looks really nice and I will enjoy watching lets plays of this game.😊
Seriously, just say 'gen 4 remakes' like every reasonable and sane person.
@@jeffbrownstain oooh, I see, using the full acronym when referring to ALL of them and all the differences therein, and not just the remakes by themselves is unreasonable and insane,
but policing the shorthand language of a rando in the youtube comments of a fandom theory video 3 months after the fact... is reasonable and sane behavior. very normal and hinged.
fascinating. good to know! learn something new every day✌️
I'm so excited to play this game :D
Can't wait to explore this region :D
I interpret the painting in Celestic Town as the 3 lake guardians creating Giritina to “Bind Time and Space” as described in the Plates Myth. They created Giritina to sort of quell any conflict that Dialga and Palkia have so space and time don’t become distorted and potentially harm both humans and Pokémon. I could be reaching but it also seems that the painting appears sort of “behind” Dialga and Palkia outside of the cave so the lake guardians sort of created Giritina secretly “behind their back” but like I said that part might be me reaching a bit!
Interesting
I believe that arceus made giratina as a precautionary measure if something were to happen to arceus or the world, a guardian hidden in the shadows, a dark knight.
Just 2 more days till the game is released, so much anticipation
I love Pokemon lore thanks for this.
Ya I agree the sinnoh region has the most myths in the Pokemon world
i was just wondering how dose giratina fit in to the origin myth? shouldent it also be a part of arceus?
I would LOVE a Unova Legends game, so much grand lore that can be touched on and explored!
I definitely think it's cool that they refer to Sinnoh as a deity of sorts, really adds to the character and personifies the region itself as some wise sentient and kind god
Loving 🥰 the arceus lead up great video xx
17:01 I'm not sure if this was just an error or if you were unaware about this, but those "eyes" on regigigas are not eyes at all, but rather sort of gemstones attached to its body. Its actual eyes are the black dots.
Not judging at all though, up until recently I thought the same and it is weird, I know
I hope they make a movie about the new mythical of PLA (The fourth genie)
OMG that would be amazing, it's been so long since the genies have been on like anime/movies
Is it Mythical? An not Legendary?
@@mudkipgames1 it will be like keldeo of swords of justice I guess
I think legendary? Idk
You made me remember a very old dream I had as a kid about the lake trio ahah
I love your video when you talk adout sinnoh myth
I think the first sinnoh folk tale may be involved with evolving bastulegion: it's pokedex entry involves lots of the dead merging as one to form bastulegion and this is what we're seeing in the tale, dead pokemon returning
Umm... i think you might be onto something.
Imagine Gamefreak reading those myths and are like: Right, lets make Basculegion and Hisuian Zorua.
In regards to the plates having two different times they are accounted to being made, this could be drawing inspiration from the Shinto myths where Nippon was the first area of the world to be created.
These myths are incredibly interesting
The Japanese
Pokemon and Humans getting married
Then finding out more about a Froslass and her Human husband apparently
If the Arceus plates are a result of creating the Universe of Pokemon
That means Arceus originally was EVERY type
A
"Infinite" Type if you will
with the cave painting and the pictures depicting the lake trio, bringing together all 3 gets you the red chain (thats how Cyrus gets it), the red chain could be what the red dot circle in the picture represents, not sure if the red chain can or does summon/bind/allow a person to control either dialga/palkia and maybe if either time or space are in some way under threat or in danger, arceus could appear and deal with whats happening in the world, maybe to prevent its destruction.
food for thought :)
