I really wish they gave folders explaining the show synopsis and what each thing represents. because its soooo rich of meaning, of resistance, cultural messages and curiosities about our culture. this year (2023) in particular was soooo full of enriching insights about our black religions and roots. I watch it EVERY YEAR from tv with my family since I was a little girl

Thank you for sharing brazilian culture in such a fun and respectful way. Carnival is one the biggest celebration for us. Some people get a culture shock when they visit here, especially during this time of the year because it's all a big party and we feel very free to express ourselves. Compared to other cultures, we are more liberal and that can be a bit shocking/scary for some people. Nothing wrong with that. it's just who we are! i'm glad to see you guys enjoying the festival. Yeah! I feel like foreigners sometimes have a tendency to either be shocked or scared by the more liberal aspect of how brazilians express ourselves sometimes, or enjoy it but in a very objectifying way, as if brazilian women were pieces of meat sexually available for any and everyone. It’s just our culture and way of expressing ourselves, and it felt like you understood and respected that.
On a different note, as a brazilian i have always thought it was incredibly hypocritical how europeans and usamericans often feel superior to more conservative cultures (like middle eastern ones) for being “more sexually liberated” and then go around and act like brazilians are savages or something when they realize we are more sexually liberal than them in a few aspects 😂 really goes to show how it’s just colonialism in the end

Being in the Somberdome is a great experience. You really do feel like you’re experiencing a culture event that was totally not made for you as an American, but is still so relatable. And watching those parades all night til the sun comes up is special.

Very nice video! I’d say Rio’s carnival is more exuberant with all the fancy costumes, the big parade etc. Salvador is raw. You go and mix with people, you sweat and jump and dance and loose yourself. It’s wild. Love it all :)

The main Samba Schools are in other level.
I've worked as a concept designer in Rio and we always say that samba schools have the best concept artists/stylists in the world, they create literal gems with simple materials. There is a whole economy based on carnaval, it's many people's main source of income :)

@@TheYarbros Things to do in the state of RIO DE JANEIRO (from December to March it's very rainy, full and expensive, so the best time to visit is April / May, cheaper and less crowded):
Visit the imperial city of Petrópolis (65 km from the city of Rio de Janeiro)
Visit Teresópolis (100 km) and visit the Serra dos Órgãos National Park
Visit Búzios, Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo and their beaches (180 km)
Visit Ilha Grande (island). Take the ferry from Mangaratiba (105 km). But you have to arrive before 8 am to take the ferry to Ilha Grande. There you will be able to take schooner trips on several islands and go diving in paradisiacal places! or take a boat from Angra dos Reis.
Visit Paraty (250 km).
Visit Penedo (city with a strong influence of Finland) and the Itaiaia National Park - 180 km
In the lower part (waterfalls), from Itatiaia
In the upper part (mountains / peaks), from Engenheiro Passos - it's necessary to have a good physical condition.

What to visit around SALVADOR:
- visit Boipeba Island (by boat)
- visit “Morro de São Paulo” (by boat)

For those who like adventure and hiking, visit Chapada Diamantina (city: Lençóis - 430 km).
