    I don’t think I’ve ever heard a TH-camr actually say that they want to be careful of what they say about food/weight/eating disorders because of the kids following them. So much respect for that statement.

      basically the opposite of the body positivity movement

    • @aurelius8439
      @aurelius8439 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's slowly coming out more and more, but there's a really dark underbelly in climbing with eating disorders.

    • @Bastelkorb3
      @Bastelkorb3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@defaultstate4536I don't think so. The idea behind the movement is to feel good in your body and don't judge others for their body. So being sensitive about that topic is one of the main goals the movement wants to accomplish... Getting rid of glorifying super low weight is one of the main goals.

      like basically what magnus said is the same as basically all people i know who support body positivity

    • @bardsamok9221
      @bardsamok9221 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@undeniablySomeGuy Maybe so but I think Magnus promotes healthy eating (not under eating or over eating to detriment of health), and will be very careful not to promote unhealthy eating behaviours, therefore protecting his viewers.
      Many in the "body positivity" group do not share that philosophy and some of their viewers are potentially in danger of following trendy but unhealthy role models promoting eating patterns that could cause serious issues years down the road. It's awesome that Magnus seriously cares for his fans and vulnerable people and would never put them in risk the way some social media trend setters are doing.

      Genuinely surprised to read this. I struggled to host this, didn't realize how difficult it was. Now I have new respect for the greats like Tim Ferriss and Rogan as hosts. I did read Magnus's entire book before this interview though with lots of notes, and have been friends with him for years, so that helped a bit LOL! Appreciate the kindness my friend!

    • @sjefsjegeren123
      @sjefsjegeren123 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jujimufu It's really difficult to put into words what makes a good interviewer, but first and foremost, you weren't a stranger and helped Magnus share everything about him and his book in 55 minutes. His life journey and the little things like Magnus opening up about Playstation problems. haha. But, the interview was personal, and I felt like I got to know Magnus and learn from his expertise. And thats part of the reason to watch an intervjue with somebody, they got a unique perspective and expertise. You achieved that! Very often, interviewers interrupt the person being interviewed to explain something, and in doing so, they lose the thread of the conversation. I often feel it would be better to simply read the person's book, and not watch more of an interview. It just messes it up.
      I am Norwegian and have read Magnus' book, and I have never seen a better interviewer than you. I hope you continue with this. One thing that would be really exciting would be if you wrote a book. And maybe even an interview where you are the one who tells about your journey, but it has to be done by someone who can do interviews. Because it's not easy to conduct an interview; you need good questions and a consistent thread throughout the conversation. Asking questions is not for amateurs. You did it better than Joe Rogen!

    Hearing you talk about tricking Juji, really makes me miss my tricking days. Spending hours at night in the available open gyms, fighting ants in the soccer fields, and sneaking in sessions between my cheer/tumble coaching. I am thankful for all the years I was in tricking, I didn't meet many trickers, but I made many friends through tumbling and college cheer. I'm grateful for all your sharing of information in the 2000s on trickstutorials and through youtube. Your tutorials not only helped me, but it also helped others around me such as my students, fellow tumblers, and other coaches. Thank you for all that you do.

      Thanks for the thoughtful and kind response Jodenc. I miss tricking too. I took a fork in the road when I peaked in that sport to pursue my own thing, and continued gaining weight, getting older, and losing skills. My arsenal is a fraction of what it used to be but I'm grateful for what it taught me about my relation to training, my body and life. Happy to see a fellow trickster here. And definitely relate to the late night open gym sessions, fire ants, getting kicked off fields (again and again and again), being a grass connoisseur, and all of the above! Thanks for hanging around! And coincidentally I have Yuri Marmerstien and Justin Carney swinging by this weekend to film a kind of "tricking video" for this channel. Video will be done in July sometime. Gonna try to learn some old man moves. ;-)

    It's crazy to finally hear someone talk about the way athletics can drive eating disorders (maybe I've just been in the wrong space to find that lol). It's so real to hear Magnus say that he looked to the body type of his peers and thought he needed to look the same. The second I got boobs and the other athlete girlies didn't, it really fucked me up. Eating was no longer fuel, it was evil and would ruin my chances to be a good athlete ✊😔

With regards getting older and grading down, I'm a few months off turning 65 and still improving my climbing grades after starting a couple of years ago. Of course I'll never be elite but it's nice to know at my age you can still improve. Currently at 23/23 (@6c/7a I think). The main thing here is Juji dont understand that rock climbing is highly technical sport and there are not much crossing points with lifting except general understanding of training and approach. Tricking is closer in terms of technique. There are levels in sports. I can say bodybuilding is the most overestimated sport and compared to other highly technical sports is really dumb. Sure lifting requires technique but far less in general than most sports. Also lifting is highly repetitive and the moves are far less than most sports and not as important.

    4:45 Also...maybe rock climbing should have been my athletic pursuit when I was younger. I grew from 5'6 78lbs to 6'2 135lbs between end of middle school and Freshman year of high school. Before I started working out to fill out my frame I was always a string bean (and still am) with considerable strength to bodyweight. It's why at 14 I was already able to throw a 65 yard football and a 87mph fastball. With very long limbs, my back being my one genetic strong point (I pulled 310kg at 195lbs) maybe climbing should have been my athletic pursuit. Top climbers are usually sponsored by companies like NorthFace, La Sportiva, etc or they might get some stipend from their country's sports ministry. Otherwise, I assume they work some type of job to save up for climbing trips. Most climbers seem to be very frugal anyway, it's not a sport that attracts people who want a glamorous lifestyle.

    I actually started rock climbing around 4-5 years ago after watching your first videos with Magnus, and I'm still going strong. Hearing of his struggles after dropping weight was interesting, because I'm still primarily a weight lifter rather than a climber, so I'm heavier than "good climbers", and was thinking about losing weight myself to hopefully help me start climbing V8 consistently. I'll stick to getting stronger rather than lighter!

      I think the takeaway would be: don't go below where your body naturally falls from specific training for your sport. If you were to focus on climbing for a year and drop/reduce heavy weight training, you would likely lose weight and that wouldn't be a health or performance issue. The issue comes when someone then decides to try to loose even more weight by starving themselves.

    • @DirtyPoul
      @DirtyPoul ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@PorklionThat's an important distinction. If you're big and muscular, then you'd get a lot of progress in clilbing just by losing muscle in your legs, for instance. Making a distinction between functional muscle and muscle that isn't functional is important. If you're climber than you want to be as light as possible, so any muscle that doesn't help you climb better will be detrimental. Pros go so extreme that they will even mimise walking up when projecting. I haven't heard this podcast episode yet, but I've heard Magnus talk about it, so I'd imagine he mentions it.
      And then there's the point about climbers being as light as possible. There's a saying in climbing that goes like this: "it's easier to get a kg lighter than a kg stronger"

    I've been looking for a Magnus podcast and finding an interview by you Juji is such a gem! My only feedback:
    You'd ask Magnus a question and then when he'd be ready to answer, you'd continue explaining the question. I wish you would let him talk a bit more.

    I met one of magnus's father's school friend here in Chattanooga at a popular swimming hole. He is as quality as magnus and it makes sense because they are from the same village. It is amazing how small this world is and how much we can experience through others testimonies

    I obviously know less than Magnus, but I do think that times have changed with the numbers he’s talking about. Competition climbing tends to be much more physical than it used to be and if you look up height and weights of pro climbers, most of them hover in the range of 150 lbs. Of course there are heavier and lighter people on the spectrum but some of the best climbers in the world are significantly heavier than Magnus even at his current weight
