    Was breezing through your video in advance of replacing the plenum gasket and modding my stock manifold as well as a shorty header install and wanted to first thank you for the in depth video...while I do not such a detailed breakdown, I know that others do.
    Second, I wanted to add a tip/trick that we use at our shop to help with identifying locations of wiring and hoses. Get a cheap container of assorted colored zip ties and use those to label connectors and their proper sensor to plug into...like the TPS sensor would get a small green zip tie on the end and the harness that plugs into it get a matching zip tie. The long ends help as a "flag" to make a harness end stand out and not get lost amongst other wires, and is secure unlike tape that can fall off due to oils on parts. Just have to make sure when the job is all done to either remove the long ends of the zip ties, or remove them completely (make sure to no cut a wire or drop them into the engine)
    Like I said, great video and hopefully someone reads this and it helps them out.

      Daniel Hammonds Thanks for the compliment, Daniel! The level of detail in my videos is definitely "overkill" for any professional/seasoned mechanic. However, I am anything but a professional mechanic, so my thought process in making these videos is that more information is better for someone who has never done these tasks before. I know that any time I try something new, I try to find as much information as possible. I also invariably get caught up on certain steps, so I hope to save others the same aggravation by offering tiny details that they might not otherwise know about until they're elbows-deep in their engine bay and cursing under their breath. I figure it's not possible to offer too much information; but I know it probably takes a lot of patience for anyone with experience to sit through my videos (if they even click on them in the first place!).
      Thanks also for the great tip! I honestly had not thought about using zip ties, but that is a brilliant idea. Much neater, and quicker, method of tagging things. I guess the only challenge is having enough colors to differentiate between the many hoses and electrical connections, but I suppose for most people with even a basic understanding of "what's what" in their engine compartment, there should be no confusion. You could double up on colors for things that are on opposite sides of the engine bay, or for things that quite obviously can't connect to each other. Great suggestion.
      On your manifold modification, are you planning to shave off the ends of the runners?
      Thanks for watching!

      I work on large trucks and we use zip ties all over. The multipacks usually have a mix of colors and sizes, and as you said you can double up on colors or mix 2 colors. I replaced the entire cash of a 2001 freightliner using them to mark everything out (roughly 25 gauge connections, a dozen air lines).
      As for modding the intake, I plan on cutting 1" off the runners and beveling. Have a 99 so I shouldn't have a center divider, but it does have a junk yard engine so I could be surprised.

      Daniel Hammonds I'll definitely remember this tip next time I have a large project. Thanks again for sharing it!
      Let me know how your intake mod goes....I'm interested in the results you achieve. Good luck!

    I appreciate the details in your video, I used them many a time through out my repair. And anyone out there who thinks this is to difficult it's not really that bad and you can even repair the water pump and timing chain with a little more work , I would have if I had the coin.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +rockcrawler1234 I'm glad you found this helpful! And I agree with you - it's definitely a job anyone with a few tools and some patience can handle. Very true about the water pump and timing chain, too....I wanted to change both when I did the plenum repair, but got impatient and wanted to get the truck back on the road, so I skipped both of those.
      Thanks for watching!

    Does all of this have to come off just to do a plenum

    I found the fan bolts pretty hard to get to and I couldn't easily get them loosened so I elected to remove the radiator which was pretty easy and gives a little more room to stand in there, I did end up taking the whole fan assem off anyway to clean it up. I'm going to try and find some 1/4" aluminum at a scrap yard to save a little money.

    Im not much of a car guy but this video as well as part 3 and your O-Ring replacement video was just about the only good videos I could find on replacing my fuel injectors. Are there any other tips you have before I start tearing apart my truck for the first time? lol. Thanks a bunch!

      Hi Skot, I'm very sorry for not replying sooner - I was completely overwhelmed at work this summer/fall and I am just now getting a chance to catch up on messages and comments. Please accept my apology, as I do try to make a point to respond to viewers in a timely manner. I just got swamped over the summer and really couldn't keep up.
      I'm guessing you have already done your repair project, but if not - my only additional advice would be to make sure you give yourself plenty of time, get organized before you start, have a clean work area so you don't lose anything, and most importantly - document each step with photos and notes! My photos/videos have probably helped me more than anything else, as I can just refer back to them if I can't remember where a certain bolt/wire/hose/etc. came from.
      I'm sorry again for my very tardy reply, and thanks for watching!

    I'm just trying to find a video for a Van because I just want to know for sure if there is enough room to do it in there... Pretty tight in ram van compared to the truck.... I've got a 98 Ram Wagon 2500 with a 5.9l and 236k miles, pretty positive it has a bad gasket because I'm getting 10mpg even though I'm driving it like I'm 80 and one morning I had to give it a little gas on the way to work and a poof of smoke came out when I started it up after getting gas. Oh and it was almost three quarts low the first time I checked the oil level after buying it.
    I can't imagine having to pull it.... But if I do it's going to have to wait. Don't you love buying used cars and finding these things later? Lol runs fantastic other than that though...

    Did you go with the Fel Pro gaskets or the basic ones? I’m not too sure if one is better than the other. Just bought a 94 1500 and plan on doing this repair, just trying to get as much info as i can

    May I ask, do you have to remove the throttle body from the intake? I know you did. But just wondering if it was a must do.

      I have the same question. I don't think it's necessary.

      @@HighSierraBob not necessary but good idea. Get the gasket set with screws, gaskets, and go fo rit. Clean the throttle body as well as the idle control valve while your at it and save some headache. Do the job right the first time.

    You have an extra evao thing under your hood. I just a clamped off hose. does that go to a large evap hose from he charcoal box ?

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Cowtails My truck is broken down and sitting at a mechanic's shop right now so I don't have access to it, but which hose are you referring to? There should be a charcoal canister, as well as a purge pump, which tests the pressure of the EVAP system to tell the computer if it is functioning properly. But, I don't remember how it is all connected off the top of my head.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Cowtails LOL at your last sentence....I have that problem, too. But in all seriousness...I really don't remember how my evap hoses are set up. When I get my truck back, I'll let you know.
      My truck died while driving home from work at the end of June. First the trans slipped into neutral, then about 5 seconds later the engine died. I coasted to the side of the road and let it sit for a few minutes, and then re-started it. It stumbled a bit, then idled normally for several minutes, so I tried to baby it to a local shop. But it did the same thing almost immediately and then would not restart. Since then, I've replaced the crank sensor and ignition coil, but had no luck. I finally had it towed to a mechanic I trust (who's not the kind of guy to bust you on labor for a problem he can't fix), and he hasn't been able to find the problem either. We both agree that we've probably narrowed it down to a bad computer by process of elimination. He replaced the cam sensor with no luck, so really the only remaining options are the computer or a wiring problem. Hopefully I can get a replacement computer and get it to fire up. Fingers crossed...
