Thanks Mike! Not only does your solution work well, it lasts FOREVER! I watched this video and fixed my dash lights about 5 years ago. I haven't had any problems since. I'm sorry it took me so long to say thank you. The least I can do is vouch for you and let the world know that your fix is permanent! Thanks again!

    MIke,
Just bought a 2001 Accord for my daughter (new driver first car). Driving it home it got dark and of course the instrument lights did not work. A mile from home I ran out of gas!! I could not see the gauge. My boys were in the chase car so they brought me back a can of gas. Anyways, I was thrilled to find your video. My 2001 had the EXACT same cracked solider joint. The fix was exactly like your video. A thousand thanks for taking the time to make this video. You are a good person!!
    Dave

I have a 2000 Honda Accord with an after market radio that was installed about 5 years ago. Since the day I had the radio installed, my dash lights turned off intermittently. The only solution was to bang on the dash until the dash lights came back on, but not anymore. I followed the instructions in your video and fixed the problem! I can't thank you enough! You saved me hundreds of dollars! God bless!

Hours and hours spent looking for solutions to this exact problem. I didn't want to take on this problem until I had a nudge in the right direction. I appreciate your time and effort. You just saved me a very expensive trip to the mechanic :).

I failed at what was to be my final attempt to fix this 5 year old problem. After searching my phone while sitting in my torn apart car with raw emotion running down my cheeks for 3 hours, I saw this video and it gave me a new sense of purpose. Thank you sir!

After messing with the multiplex module, doing bypassing wires and doing all crazy things for more than a month... You came up with the best solution ever. I just did it and my instrument panel is back to life!
    Thank YOU!

I had the exact problem in my 2000 Accord and I used this video to help me solder the same joint that was bad, which fixed the issue! This was my first solder job ever and it went well; I already had a cheap soldering kit I had bought for a seperate project. It was a very quick fix with the proper equipment (flathead screw driver, phillips head stubby screwdriver, soldering gun).
    Thanks for your helpful video!

Saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you so much!!! Fixed my 2000 accord V6. Had in and out odometer display as well as no back lights. First few pins on the odometer were cracked, solder and fixed!

Hi Mike. This was amazing. The odometer on my 2001 v6 accord was rarely displaying the mileage correctly. I watched your video and the took my gauge cluster out to see if it was the same issue. Indeed it was. The first few pins had cracked solder joints. I hadn't used a solder gun in over 20 years (built RC cars as a kid) but figured it was worth a shot. Couldn't get any worse. I ordered a cheap soldering iron and very thin solder. I think it was .020. The thinnest I could find. I melted the existing solder and put on a tiny bit extra while being careful not to overlap. The whole process took me about 45 minutes. My odometer is now working like new. Thank you!!!! BTW, no idea why you got a a few thumbs down on this. Guess you can't please everyone when it comes to free useful information!

Thank you so much for this tutorial, I had the same issue with the lights going out and the odometer looking scrambled. I've never soldered anything in my life, but I went online and bought a $20 kit, spent a few minutes watching videos on beginners soldering, and then followed your video. I was quite nervous about trying this, about in under an hour I took the dashboard out, soldered it the same pin (it was clear which pin was bad on mine as it was cracked and blackish), and put it back in. Thank you!

What an awesome diagnosis and explanation for the exact problem that I was experiencing with my 2000 Accord EX. Unfortunately it was my fault for the cracked solder joint due to sloppy and careless removal of the instrument cluster prior to changing a few burnt out bulbs. Mike, you are da man and your video saved me a couple hundred bucks that I was about to spend on a new instrument panel. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and knowledge!

Thanks Mike! My wife's 2000 Accord had the same problem. The dealership said we needed to replace the circuit board for $600. I followed your video instructions and sure enough there was a fractured solder joint on the power feed. Reflowed the solder on that joint and snapped the assembly back in the dash. I hit the switch and we have dash lights again. I think it took longer getting my tools and soldering stuff set up than it did to take the gauge assembly out and put it back.

You’re the best! I had the exact same problem on my 2001 Accord where the gauges would sometimes illuminate when I turned on the headlights and sometimes not. Turned out to be that cracked soldering joint just like yours. Thanks a ton!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! 3 years ago paid a dealer $100 to tell me I need a new circuit board which is something like $500. Been whacking it ever since but it finally died. Didn't have to remove the circuit board from the assembly to do this. Noticed a crack and soldered it. Works great now.

Outstanding video, Michael. Your diagnostic technique is, IMO, the proper way to determine a problem. However, I could get no further than the removal of the trim's top two screws and the dislodgement of the top and top-corners of the trim to my wife's 2002 Honda Accord. I found it impossible to slide the bottom portion of the trim towards me as there's nothing to grab onto. I've tried, carefully, to use a flat-tipped screwdriver to pry the sides and bottom inward while pulling the top

This is an excellent video. Thank you. My 2000 Accord had the exact same problem: cracked solder joint. On a very cold day my dashboard lights worked fine, but most of the time drove around without any dashboard lights.
I like your fix because I get to keep the cars original miles. A used instrument cluster will have different miles.

You did a great video video. You spoke clearly, slowly and very detailed. I don't know how to do all the sawterring (SPELLED WRONG)l THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM THAT IM HAVING NOW. Before I would lightly bang on the exterior of my dashboard and the lights like the speedometer would come back on. However, they don't anymore. This just happened a couple of days ago.

Thanks Michael... This was the same exact problem on my Accord 2001 and I had one solder cracked. It was the top left corner solder for me and after I had my friend fix the solder the instrument cluster display lighting worked like a charm

  • @Ottonic6

That's quite common of a problem when that gen. Accord has a crank/no start condition... The main relay up under the drivers side dash has cracked solder points, and with that too, I just took it apart and re-soldered the cracked points (I did them all to be sure) making sure I didn't leave any solder bridges when I was done. That was a couple yrs ago and it still works perfectly to this day.

Excellent to see this video...it's 2022, I have the 2000 Accord with this EXACT issues, and avoided focusing on its repair for fear of the expense. Now it doesn't seem so daunting. However, I'm 70, probably won't be interested in soldering this myself, so I need to know...
1-do I need to take this to a dealer (or reputable Honda repair person) to fix this?
2-if I can't stand the dealer estimate, do I look for someone who does vehicle electrical system repair, as a specialty, or is that not necessary?
3-if the dealer's estimate is "doable" shall I request that they change all the bulbs in the cluster while in there?
I love this Accord, looks like I can get another 100K from it (it's at 189K now and worth this repair). Thanks!

For some reason, the turn signal indicators on the cluster do not eliminate when in use, but the turn signal lights do work in the headlight tail lights. They just don’t light up on the indicators, letting me know they’re blinking. I hear the relay clicking and this also happens when I engage the emergency button since they are connected to each other I don’t know what the problem is other than checking fuses. I am waiting for those to be delivered so I can see if that’s a problem they checked refuses they seem to be working. They do need to be changed though. I did add glow gauges to the cluster. I had to modify it, but I did not tap into anything in the cluster assembly just tapped in the fuse so
When I turn on the instrument panel lights, the blow gauges also turned on as well. I’m wondering if that could be an issue maybe with the wiring I don’t know confused done it any solutions or ideas? I would much appreciate it. I know this video is old. Hopefully this gets to you anyways hope you’re doing well ever since. peace.

It could be the indicator bulbs are burnt out. I know some of the bulbs are serviceable and worth looking into it as it could be somewhat of a simple fix. repair.

You could narrow it down by grabbing only the male side connected to the panel and try to keep the pigtail as steady as possible. If it goes on and off it is probably a solder joint on the back side of the connector (solder joints on the back side) if not, move out to the actual connection of the two connectors etc...

Sir, this is excellent vid. I want to put white gauges I have the same car, my concern based on some of my research is that you have to be careful when you unplugged the cluster cables like you did to take out the cluster they say some cars are made to reset the odometer to 0? Did you find when you installed plugged it back the odometer was not reset? I don't want to unplug anything until i know my odometer will not get reset. Thanks

2005 Saturn Ion, my Instrument Cluster just started going completely bonkers on me. Say's 'Error', fuel gauge doesn't work.. than it works for a second, tach works most times, speedo sometimes, lights flashing like airbag, ebrake, oil, battery and everything else. Car starts fine, cruise control works, windows, lights, brights, A/C, heat, wipers, runs well..
Not Alternator, Not Battery... yes we have stupidly rough roads and I have a car stereo system.. only one JL 10 in a sealed box.
I first thought it had to do with water I ran through on Sunday, but now kinda leaning towards soldering joints being cracked on instrument cluster. I ran through a couple huge puddles on sunday, no issues... Monday morning, started the car, fine. Hit a bump and shit went berzerk!
Does this sort of 'Instrument Cluster' issue happen with most or all makes?? If so, should I attempt to pull the thing out and try to save myself $400?

I have a 1999 Honda like the one in this video. I bought it with A/C and the cooling fans not working. I have replaced fuses, relays, even the controller behind the dash. Nothing has fixed. So what I have done , is found a power source inside the fuse box, and jump wires between the A/C relay and the Cooling fan relays. Now the fans work and the A/C. But I have to remove the jumper, when I park the vehicle less the fans continue to run and kill the battery.
    Can you help me.

Burhan Gilani - maybe I can help, as I've done this a number of times. The most common issue with reinstallation is getting the top connector on the upper right to clear the wiring harness that runs just above it. Use a flat screwdriver, or a plastic pry bar, and slide it in between where the connector and the harness are hitting together and gently push the harness up and back, so you can slide the connector past. I realize this is a month after your original post, so hopefully you would have solved this already!

    Hello,
My car is 2000 Accord Coupe V6. I installed new radio. Turned lights on and some strange sound squeeked and that was it. My dashboard doesn't work, same problem. Trying to figure out where exactly the problem is but nobody tells me for sure. From internet I figure out I have to replace the MBCU, from shops they tell me to replace the cluster. What's the best way to diagnose the problem so I know what to fix/replace? Please contact me! Thanks!!!
