- Waltz #2 (XO) by Elliott Smith - performed by Ethan Daum and Reade McCardell. This seems to be one of Elliott's more popular songs, and I can understand why - because it's so ridiculously good.
A lot of the songs on XO are more heavily produced, and are arranged for a full band which makes it a little trickier deciding how to cover it. Years ago I did find some videos of Elliott playing it live by himself, so that's where I picked up some things in the way I play it here.
Big thanks to Reade McCardell for singing this with me. His voice is just so good! And I love the chance to do a little harmonizing too. Reade and I agreed that this song may have the best bridge of all time, what do you think? :)

For you guitar players wanting to learn this song:
Guitar is tuned down a whole step - as is pretty normal for Elliott. The chords aren't particularly tricky in this song... just one weird chord that might be hard to get.
Intro/chorus:
Am C F C F/C C G C (the F/C is mostly so you can do a hammer on the G string for the melody)
Verse:
Am C (walk bass down C, G, F#, to this next F chord) F D/F# G7
Dm Am Bm7(b5) E (That Bm7b5 is the tricky one - a half diminished chord! x20231 )
To get into the bridge you go from a C, and then just move the C shape up a fret, but mute the D string with your middle finger - so effectively x4x02x
Bridge:
Dm F C G Am Dm F (I think I remember Elliott adding a 9th on that last F in his acoustic version 13x213 )

It's too bad that the world pulled this song out of Elliott Smith so often that he hated his own song. Such a beautiful song and you guys did it beautifully.
How come that it's been requested so much but it's not one of the top songs listened of him here on TH-cam?
Like with teen spirit it makes sense like it's the most popular nirvana song to this day.

@@mattis1389when XO released and waltz #2 was nominated to an oscar for the movie good will hunting, elliott was doing lots of interviews and he might have been tired of playing the same song countless times
@@toshiba_gWaltz #2 wasn’t nominated for the Oscar it was miss misery. I think Elliott just got bored of this song because it was one that was sort of picked out to promote the album. A lot of the shows and interviews promoting XO he played this because they’d obviously listened to the album and thought this was the best to hook people in (also people referred to this song as XO so it was kinda of the albums name track) t’s a great song but I can see why he got fed up of playing it .
It's the closest anyone would ever get to the original, your covers are the best.
I swear it used to be impossible to find good Elliott Smith covers, but it's like the world has figured it out. Great job.

What a fantastic cover. Theyre so hard to do, but this one is great!
One thing I might have changed is to not sing duet on the "in this place where I have what it takes" line. That is the most emotionally naked line in the song, and you can hear it intentionally done so in Elliott's delivery.
Other than that, absolutely superb. Well done.
