the mirror is the most accurate.. Its shows accurate lighting and more detail of ur face but just flipped.. Look at other people in the mirror and they would look exactly the same as u see them without the mirror. When he says "not the real u" it actually is but flipped... either way flipped or not u will still look the same to other people as you do in a mirror.

As an oil painter and portrait painter I have had to work from photos for decades. I try to paint as much from life as possible. The camera eye CANNOT see what the human eye and brain can. It sees far less color and less distinction between values (dark to light), and cannot see edges and detail as clearly as the human eye can.. And as Daniel said, the curvature of the lens distorts facial features: length of noses, chins, foreheads, size of ears, hair mass, etc. As a rule we will not take or use photos for proportion that were shot from less than 10 feet from the model. Photos actually lie so bad that an oil painter who relies heavily on photos must return to the live model for practice pretty often, so they don't lose the ability correct or make up for the lies that photos constantly tell. The mirror is what you look like --- but in reverse. Thank you, Daniel.

It's an interesting subject matter, actually. Live model drop in drawing studios are popping up everywhere. There are now three in the medium sized city where I live. In Chicago there are at least eight that I know of. They cost about $25 dollars per session to attend for 3 hours to draw from a live model,... but are well worth it. My guess is it's related to the inundation of Snap Chat, Facebook, Instagram, and digital cameras, and Iphones. In the top Art schools, including the one I went to, self portraits are painted exclusively from - THE MIRROR. Not a photo and for god's sake not a selfie taken with an iphone. Accuracy is important in portrait work, and the live model and mirror are what give you that level of accuracy needed. Much of the Representational artwork being produced today is not as good as it was 200 or even 100 years ago. Digital technology has played a significant role in that demise. Whether it be the objects on the table in front of you, the landscape behind your house, your friends, the people around you, or yourself,...... anything that you photograph, is not accurate to life. What you see with your retina (which is connected to the brain by way of the optic nerve) is what things really look like. The mirror gives you that, the camera does not.
Interesting but it makes sense, from mirror it's a direct reflection ( in reverse) but the dimensions of your face are exactly that in real life what you see from there. I thought so too before that why do other people look the same in pics and how you see them...but actually they don't look the same. The differences are so small that you can't see them right away. But if you are married etc with someone you see every day you will start to notice your wife etc will look different in pics than how you see her etc. So this is good news, everyone looks better in real life than what they think look lol...
@@mickeyguide3112 I think in photos of people we know, we tend to look for features and similarities that we recognize, and as you said....sort of look past the rest. Our brains are willing to accept what the photo is giving us. But boy, in reality, the photos people are looking at are a terrible representation of the subject. In portraiture, I will take as many as 60 photographs from multiple angles and distances, and then create a composite sketch from the myriad of images before me. Many painters will also commit much of the form (they saw from life) to memory, which can be a powerful tool if utilized properly. The rock bottom WORST photos are the ones taken with a fisheye wide angle lens. If a flash is used, particularly in a dim lit room as in a bar or club, then your photos will be a guaranteed disaster. A technique I learned from old time illustrators was to back up 25 to 30 feet from the model, and mount a 210 mm or larger telephoto lens onto a tripod, then zoom up and take the shot. If the light is good, you will get a much better rendition of the actual proportions of the models proportions. Not only do cameras distort heads and faces, they distort torsos, hands and feet. Basically any form in from of it. The lower grade the camera, the more problems you'll have. The less experienced the photographer, the more problems you'll have. I use the Loomis method for redrawing the skull and hands. Then I put the features on that, and try to replicate the light (the direction and temperature), based only slightly on what I see, but to a larger degree on what I know. Your chances then of getting something believable to life, increase. Many amateur painters will attempt to copy the photograph, and find that their rendering, after much dedicated effort, does not resemble the model/sitter. If you try to copy verbatim what the photo is giving you......you are DEAD IN THE WATER. Photographs are unreliable. The mirror and life give you the truth. Sorry to write so much...lol,...but this is an important issue in representational painting. Thank you.

I once went into a weird hippy store in Reno that had a 3D mirror that flips your reflection to show you what other people see. I was horrified.

One more thing: My husband who have seen me about daily in every possibly lighting, on days without makeup, on days where I look very very ill, on days with and without edema in my face, with and without nose swelling without and without rosacea, with and wihout redness and swelling of the eyes and lids, and so on, and who have also shot about all my photos over the years, says that I look much closer to reality (what he see when he see straight at me) when he see me in a mirror than if he shoot pictures of me right after, in any lighting. HE has stated that many times, including now when I ask where I look closest to what he see. He always say the mirror look closest.
And one more thing I have said before and even posted examples of. When I shoot pictures of myself in the mirror, they look strange and not how i look like when watching myself in the mirror (explain that) I look better when Tom shoot the picture (on that particular day, meaning how I look like that day or moment of the day. But again how I look vary both in the mirror and pictures and has to do with all those factors I listed among other things, that changes quite drastically in my case, something to do with extreme variations due to my illness (how severe my migraines, vertigo and exhaustion to name a few symptoms, is one day or part of the day to the next)

Ok so i cant notice my asymmetricity on mirrors but do in pictures. But the question is, do people notice it irl? Or feel how i feel about myself while i look into mirrors

Think about it like this. When was the last time you saw a face and thought it was asymmetrical? (I mean regur looking features btw, bc of course you'll notice a super crooked nose for example) Prob never right? Well it's the same with other ppl they wont notice.
Well there's actually a reason for it. Let's just say your chin or nose is naturally 2cm towards left. When you look at the mirror it's 2cm towards the opposite side and you unconsiously get used to it, so when you look at your self in the photos it seems like it is 4cm towards left instead of 2.

Even though im a very good looking man, I don’t look as good in pictures as I do in person. People tell me all the time how good looking I am, but that doesn’t seem to be in photos. But thats ok. Because what you look in person its what you really are.

@@chadedwards3676 I think u can do this trick which I personally did after a lot stupid time consuming research which at the end of the research it didn't actually provide me the ans I was looking for .😂 ok btw to the point this is my trick at it provided me little more realistic ans,do one thing take a normal selfie in ur normal setting obviously u will look like the one in mirror save it ,then a another copy of this photo in fliped version ...for instants my looks horrible ,
Get a frd who sees u almost everyday / like atleast knows more or less how you look ,send both of these copies to them & ask them in real like which photo u actually look ....
I tried this method with my 2 frds & for my defective surprise ,ys i have to say defective coz when i was doing this I wasn't expecting how the reply would be & I was in the assumption my face in real does it looks this horrible in like in inverted photos 😑.....and ya come to the point both of my frds choose my normal photo meaning the way I look in mirror I asked them again they said they are completely sure ...so u can try this trick
Btw I send my pics to people who have seen me in real one who saw me everyday and 2nd who saw me 1 yr before
I think i assume that maybe our faces maybe assymetrical somewhere & the inverted photos makes it appears more worst coz of the software setting i guess ..& in reality even if such assymetric exist on the face its rarely noticeable to people ...otherwise think partically if such assymetric that much only existed on our face as we see in inverted images then why till now no one 9r any person told us abt it ,that means either its there is minute degree and literally no one notices it or its technically no there ...any one of the above

I think one of the biggest differences between mirror and a camera lense is that in a mirror you always see the front, because your eyes follow and never the profile/side.
A camera can show you from every angle, while a mirror cannot provide that. On the flipside, a camera always is resoltion-bound because its digital and a mirror is not.

Most mirrors reflect a more accurate image of one's self. Photos usually don't accurately dimensionalize your face, often make imperfections contrasting, and often don't reflect color naturally. By dimensionalization I mean the impression of contours and depth is not accurate (And certain skin tones and bone structure make this effect worse in some people). In many cameras, especially smart phones, the focal length setting also contributes to this distorted impression.

Just loved the way you showed those expressions which i usually make on photos.
The best way to see the contrasting differences as to whether you look , fatter, skinnier, lighter or darker is to perceive your hand for a few seconds then view it from the same angle in the mirror and take it a picture of it. That'll give you an idea where you stand. My hand tends to look wider(Fatter) in close selfies but skinnier in the mirror than when I physically see it.

Mirrors are, as they present our 2D image in 3D. Cameras/videos/photos display a 3D image in 2D. I don’t pay any mind to either one though, because how people react to us is the best indication of what we look like (which we’ll sadly never know). There’s a reason we sometimes see people appearing gorgeous on camera and ordinary in person, and vice-versa.

You missed the most important reason. Most people do not have perfectly symmetrical faces, meaning that the right side and the left side of their faces are slightly different. On certain cases this difference is more obvious which increases the difference between the mirror look and the photo look. When that's the case, people tend to dislike their photo look even more because it looks significantly different than what they see on the mirror everyday.
Also as a side note, people instinctively find symmetrical faces more attractive as it's a sign of healthy genes. That is why all of those people that are deemed handsome/beautiful have almost perfectly symmetrical faces.

That is because you yourself always look at yourself differently than at everything else.
Its a little bit comparable to how you think you "sound". Then when you hear yourself talk in a video, it sounds different.

My biggest reason that I figured is that I look better when light hits me straight forward on my face when I take photos but when I take photos with light from the ceiling to my face it does not look good as well

There are many reasons why, but IMO the most important ones are:
-lens distortion change natural size of your face
-camera sensor just cant replicate dynamic range the same as human vision, therefore colors and contrast will always look different.
-LCD monitors cant replicate colors perfectly like a mirror.

Mirrors give a more accurate look

@@shadeerahmed4685 No you're wrong. The I phone flips your face and we are told that it how people really see you when they are standing in front of you. So I tested this. I wear my bangs to the right side of my face and when I stand in front of the mirror that is exactly how they appear. When I take a picture however my bangs appear on the left side now if that's how someone actually sees me when standing in front of me my bangs should appear on the left side. However when my sister was standing in front of me talking to me I asked her what side of my face is my bangs on and she replied "The right side". Now that's the same as my mirror image. So people do not see your flipped image when standing in front of you. They see you mirror image.

I have a problem with my face, when I ask someone if my face looks assymetrical they say no....but I don't know they're saying the truth becuz when I look in the picture with flipped image, it looks totally assymetrical and horrible!
But when I stood in front of mirror for a longer period of time, it started to look assymetrical too. People say my face doesn't look distorted...

@@binodtharu4456 Yes my sister is telling me the truth and I've asked other people and they all say the same thing as well. What people arent understanding is when they say that the camera phone is showing you how you really look when the image is flipped is that camera phone distort facial pictures. So even when your face is flipped the camera phone exaggerates all of your flaws. For example when flipped your nose will appear a little bigger. If one side of your face is bigger than the other side the camera makes it look really big. So your flipped image on a camera phone is not ACCURATE. My friends have taken pictures of me with a regular camera in good lighting and from a normal distance and my face appears to look almost just like how i see it in the mirror but if a picture is taken of me with a cell phone that flips the image it distorts my face.
