For anyone wondering where to start in No Man's Sky: Do the expedition. It starts you from nothing, just like the regular game. Then it gives you an tangible path to follow and goals with rewards. It's a much more directed experience than the open world, what the heck am I supposed to do? experience you get from the main game.
I think it depends on the expedition. It can be pretty overwhelming once you see the scope the game offers on regular play. Adding in the expedition when you don’t understand the goals you need to meet can put new players off. However, some are perfect for a new player (adrift being one imo).

In almost every aspect, Star Citizen reigns supreme in the alpha stage compared to a game that lacks depth and visual appearance. Do us a favor?
