    You can turn the round shape into a wall clock just adding a cheap clock movement and hands, providing they are visible (i.e. in a color that will not hide on that kind of background). What do you think?

    Dude that's a sweet idea! Definitely think a 'not for food' oven is best for this kind of thing but yeah once you have the flat sheets you could do all sorts of projects with them. The look kind of reminds me of Bakelite. Coasters is the obvious one, but I wonder if you could melt them into a rod for lathe work or a block for CNC.

      Yes, but doesn't the moisture absorption pose an issue with the print head when you do that? I'd think you'd need to melt the scrap in the presence of desiccant prior to reforming the filament.

  • @martinsoendergaard-jensen9602
    @martinsoendergaard-jensen9602 8 ปีที่แล้ว +111

    Here in Denmark there are these 're extruding' places. You bring them your scrap and they turn them back into filament

    Hi there a few suggestions and tips firstly your upside down bowl idea can work however you did not have enough material. You measured around the bowl but that did not take depth into account I'd suggest if you want to try again to use material drape over the bowl and draw on the outside this will be a better size indicator if you want a bowl to match in size. For the right side up bowl a few options the best /easiest in my mind involves two bowls and good oven mitts. Using your previous method wait till the plastic is mostly melted remove and place a second bowl and press to get a better shape just down press too hard or you'll have thickness issues hold or quench in cool but not cold water 70 or so anything too cool might cause brittle ness. Another interesting option is cast forms this could be a collate or mini cake mould (metal or heat resistant silicone) other purchased moulds or slef made moulds using a silicone gel or putty to make a mould of almost anything. Infact using this method you can potentially make somthing with your three printer mould it take waste chips slightly over fill the mould to account for airspace melt and voila. Other things you could make could include but are not limited to utensil Handel's using two part casting. Custom tool grips with high heat resistant fingered gloves by wrapping the soft plastic over the metal or wood handle and grabbing it leaving finger grooves. Planters or boxes by cutting parts and either using epoxy or melting more line by use of somthing like a heat gun or three doodler. If your plastic is food safe you can use it to make plates, cutlery (from moulds) chopsticks, by or borrow Lego make a mould and create your own custom Legos. Use small peices with a bit of glue or epoxy to make key covers. I hope some of these suggestions were helpful and I hope you have fun. Feel free to contact me if you want for more ideas.

      Inbound they do, but if you do it with patience it shouldn't be too bad. I've used dremels on hard plastics and if you go slowly and work in layers it helps to not get melted boogers everywhere and you avoid smelling the harsh chemical smell. 😘

    That's some abstract art right there!
    I'd just frame the flat sheet one, and trim the edges of the bowls, making them into something like a small shallow dish, and use them to collect keys and pocket changes.
    Also, I think you should cut the circle bigger when you made the bowl.

    Hi Devin (Sorry if I butchered the spelling, hah.) My suggestion would be to make your melted sheets larger and your bowls smaller. That way when you melt your plastic sheet over the bowl, it covers most of the bowl's surface. Any weird mess can be cleaned up pretty easily after that, I think. YAY science! 😉 Hope this helped :) Would really love to see this project successfully done !

    Some heat guns give very high temperature and you can bent acrylics with them very easily. Did that once with mine which gives me 600° C. So I bet a good heat gun and very good protective gloves, a brayer and your good to go to form any sheet on any metal shape. You get a lot of control by simply getting closer of moving away from the object with the heat gun.
    By the way with a heat gun and your saw you can turn the plate from the tray into a skateboard. saw the shape and bend the tip with the heat gun over a block of granite until the tip has the shape you like.

    • @dutchik5107
      @dutchik5107 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you need to know the melting point of the metal tho. some are beneath 600°C.
      because that's around the temperature of a regular fire.

    I LOVE the bowls you made. What you could have done, is to press something flat/hard on top while the bowls was on the metal bowls, just to make sure it would be stable when you put it on the table. Then - still being warm/soft - press in a few nails or washers in the bottom, to add some weight down low to make them stable. EXCELLENT candy bowls, kids would love them!

    one thing I do with extra abs bits. melt them in acetone. You can make abs juice you can eventually paint onto your print bed and your print will stick to it every time. think of it this way your print bed will become plastic. your molten plastic will lay ontop of plastic that's coated the plate. I do it on my printer and it hasn't failed yet. also with the abs juice I've use it to bond and fill gaps for prints that have to be bonded together. it works as a nice glue and filler. I've got an old pickel jar I have a bit of acetone in that I throw little abs bits into.
    also there are machines you can feed bits of plastic recycled or pellets (way cheaper than filament form) and you can extrude your own filament. couple companies are making these now for consumers. would be cool to play with and make different mixtures. add metal powders and stuff to make your own custom filament spools.
    keep up the good work!

That way you can set the materials type, toss the extras prices and put it onto a new real to be used in a future spool and make a new print.

    for the bowls try setting up a stand that will hold the bowl open side down, but have it open so you can heat it with something such as a torch, or small fire. You can heat up the bowl mould and hand press the plastic disc to form it yourself.
    this way the plastic won't melt simultaneously as the bowl heats up.
    (alternatively you could just pre heat the bowl and press the discs down bit by bit, heating only the bowl when you need to.
    you could combine this with soaking the plastic in boiling water for that extra bit of playability.)

    Oh man. Imagine using these as blanks for cnc milling. You could use this just like you would use wood, mill out your logo, make blanks for knife scales, etc. It looks like you'd have to sand down that exposed side that didn't flatten properly to get a nice flat side OR you could just USE that side for the exposed side to the milling and have a textured front side.
    I also like the idea of coasters, you could make quite a few, give them out for gifts (also no 2 will be the same, and they could still be identifiable in sets).
    I've thermoformed plastics in boiling water for making a prosthetic hand wrist, but it was quite thinner and less solid. I would also bet a heat gun would work better for your application.

    What you're doing is called "slumping", its a technique done in glass work. Personally I really like the drippy look of the bowls, very cool. Would love to see how those little bits look after a trip through a rock tumbler.This also kinda-sorta reminds me of a technique/material a professor of mine created: Thurmanite. Its layered paper + plastic, then sanded with woodworking tools so you can see the various layers within. You could layer a bunch of these leftover sheets, melt them to stick, then go at it with saws and sanding tools. Would make some really neat colorful works.

    that's remarkable. I'm trying to do the same process as well and research some resources. there is some information that is pros and cons. I'm not sure what is the right way to recycle PLA and what type of methods can be used to accomplish this. I am starting a small business, but it's in the process of doing research here and there. Awesome process this would be great leverage, have you tried other plastic from the triangle plastic from 1 to 7 plastic or do you mainly focus on 3D printed parts?
