I was a voice actor from the late 80s till 2010. I am black. All through my career I have voiced a “black” character about 3 times, out of hundreds of voice gigs.
Being a voice actor I worked on my diction and tried to make my normal speaking voice as straight ahead ‘normal’ as possible. I have also done work to get different accents and regions into my voice repertoire so I would be prepared to do any voice.
I have voiced characters of just about all ethnicities. Southwestern white guy, check. Latino guy, check. Asian bad guy, check and many more.
So in our “new more inclusive” world I as a black voice actor would have starved because there just wasn’t enough black characters to voice. There are actors who spend hours and hours working on dialects to get voices right, so are those actors out of work because rather than getting them to do a voice they are going to locate a real person of that kind to voice the part?
There's only one thing you have incorrect with your statement. The Woke law of ethnicity matching actor is only enforced if the actor is white.
Look at Phil LaMarr. No one has any issues with him playing any character.
But heaven forfend if Phil DiMaggio tries to play a non-white role. He'll be drummed out of the voice actors guild faster than they tried to cancel Vic Mignogna.

All I know is Jubilee original VA is white and she's stupid for not taking the role because she NOW thinks only an Asian VA should play her

I had no idea Penny Gadget was black and I didn't care. Voice casting should be done with the eyes closed.

The weird thing is in my head my voice sounds like it always did. But to everyone else it’s totally different and softer.
You missed how Jubilee's design was reverted back to her early design. In the final season she had longer hair and a different costume, which was likely done to show she had matured and grown up a bit, which this show doesn't retain.
I’m actually a little glad that for the moment Cyclops is getting more appreciation given he’s always the x men people shit on in both in universe and real life. I just hope that the Madelyn prior story they are adapting doesn’t make him into the asshole writers tend to always make him.

Adamantium is indestructible. That’s why wolverine’s claws don’t explode when gambit charges them with his kinetic energy.
Adamantium is not indestructible; damn near, but it's not. And Gambit's power is to charge an object with it's own latent kinetic energy(not his), turning it into an explosive; Wolverine's entire skeleton should have turned to shrapnel.
Adamantium is effectively indestructible as nothing shown in the show's universe can damage it(including Gambit's powers). Gambit's powers are to affect the potential and kinetic energy within matter. He can actually do a lot more than just make "bombs". In the comics, he has been shown to be able to launch himself at superhuman speed, cause things to disintegrate, catch on fire, melt, launch small objects with the force of a bullet, etc. I would assume Gambit charging Wolverine's claws just mostly increased their effective kinetic energy and force.@@fizzywhizzbanger5610
A lot of the problems with the writing can be chalked up to the fact that writing as a skill is not really taught anymore. I am a writer myself and everything I know I had to learn from books and interviews with writers from previous generations. Many of the other authors that I work with that are not Gen X or at least Millennials have a surprisingly poor grasp of how stories are constructed. Many cannot even write dialogue or describe scenes and more than a few make mistakes that high school students back in the day would have known to avoid, such as switching tenses in the middle of scenes, writing walls of text, etc.
similar problem with modern anime/manga. In the past it was regular people making anime viewing life around them. Now it's evolved to Otakus/shut ins making content while they have barely any interaction with the world around them.
So different scenario socially but similar things in how it's affected writing negatively.
Things is despite that, anime/manga is thriving because at least it's not inundated with identity politics and fans can still enjoy what they create as its pure escapism not propaganda

Yeah I noticed this too with even simple writing for everyday use. People can't spell, punctuate, indent paragraphs, etc. Let alone write books. I'm not perfect but at least I know how to structure sentences.

With why Chris Potter isn't voicing Gambit anymore, he may just be a little too old to do Gambit's voice the way he used to. He's definitely getting on in years (I'm speaking as someone who personally met him at Megacon a month and a half ago; Nice guy, very friendly, especially considering I met him near the end of the day when he was undoubtedly getting tired), and Gambit's voice is pretty young- sounding. The new Gambit voice actor in this show, AJ Locascio (Arguably best known for his honestly kickass performance as the voice of Marty in the 'Back to the Future' video game they did years ago, in which he did a near- perfect imitation of Michael J. Fox's voice), made for an excellent substitute imo.
At least he didn't think it was racist like Jubilee's original voice actress.😢

Remember Animaniacs 2020? A reboot of one of the greatest 90s cartoons of all time? When it first came out, everyone treated it like the cure for terminal cancer. It was on par with the original show. Some said it was even funnier.
Everyone who wasn’t Pinky, Brain or the Warners was cut and replaced. The only people involved with the original who came back were the voice actors and songwriter. Sorry, I love Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell and Tress MacNielle, but they sound so tired in the reboot. You can tell Paulsen's cancer scare took its toll on his vocal cords.
Yakko, Wakko and Dot are just exaggerations of their most defining traits. Yakko just tells naff jokes, Wakko's a gross idiot and Dot is a passive aggressive bra burner now.
X-Men 97 has a good chance of being like Animaniacs 2020. It banks heavily on fanservice but you'll realise it sucks balls after the honeymoon phase.
well in all honesty it has a fair chance of being just as good or even better than the original since the original had a bunch of hurdles to go through just to be made, not to mention being faithful to 30+ history of comic book storylines.
That's what I was thinking. I wouldn't have thought of animaniacs as an example. I actually lost interest in it right away. I loved the '90s animaniacs. I was even X-Men fan.

I guess Magneto did take over from Charles after he dies in "Age of Apocalypse" so it's not like we haven't seen it before.

Maybe Disney fired the show runner right at the premiere just so that they can pull viewers in with nostalgia and then subvert expectations after the first few episodes.
The show is flashy and nostalgic but the writing underneath all the pretty lights is not good. I’m guessing it will pull people in but they won’t notice the underlying problems because they’re distracted by all the shallow surface level stuff. Story should make sense when the visuals are added but not so much with X-men 97.
After watching the first episode, I refused to continue; nostalgia alone isn't enough to cover the glaring flaws I saw with this reboot. And it *is* a reboot, not a continuation.

As a Christian, he's one of my favorites. To embrace God after being treated like the Devil incarnate shows great strength of character. Plus his testimony to Wolverine is iconic.

Same with Nightcrawler and Colossus l (though not as bad). They were drawn way better in 1989 cartoon pilot Pryde of the X-Men.

I never understood why Nightcrawler and Colossus weren't part of X-Men TAS team or made to be eventually. Was very odd. It was 76 episodes. They definitely could a done it. Same with Psylocke and bringing Iceman back
Now this new show, the head producer confirmed other mutant teams will be coming, like bringing back Alpha Flight, bringing in X-Force and probably X-Factor
Now some of those weren't introduced in the original show....so that's gonna give the showrunners card blanche on completely reworking them for this show so don't be surprised on genderswap, raceswaps and sexual identity swaps...
Dude, it was good. I was surprised. In a positive way. It wasn't preachy, the action scenes were great, the dialogue was great. It felt just like the 90s show, but with better animation. I also grew up with the original and Spider-Man TAS...I was nervous for this show too, but, SO FAR, after two episodes, they've pulled it off.

18:34 To be clear i am NOT defending the show. I have WAY more issues with it than Thorias does. But just for the record, gambit can control how much charge he puts into an object. And certain materials are a better conduit for his charges than others. In the comics he used to charge his bo-staff...i'm not sure what it was made of...with just enough power to make it hit much harder but without destroying it. So it's not outlandish that Adamantium can also hold a minor charge without doing any damage to wolverine.
The reason the original never clarified morphs sexuality becuase it didnt matter! Characters only had sexuality if they had a romantic love interest in the show. What was cable's sexuality? No clue. He didnt have a love interest. Whar was blob's sexuality? No clue. He didnt have a love interest. Logan was straight and we knew that because he was into Jean. Etc...
There was no need to define these things becuase unless there was a story beat involving it then it didnt matter

The continuity error showing Angel with the O5 X-Men was also in the original show. There were flashbacks that had the O5 including Beast, Angel, and Iceman in their original designs flying and leaping around the Danger Room.
Yeah, I was also confused why Trask turned evil again after what happened in the season 1 finale. Honestly, it was just an excuse to bring Sentinels back into play, as any present-day episode after Season 1 that had Sentinels made it clear that they weren't still being made and they were all left over from the first season. (Even though the comics had Sentinels keep appearing long after Trask died helping the X-Men destroy the ones he built in his first appearance.)
I agree. Even if he relapsed into hating mutants, I seriously doubt he would retread this.
Not sure if charging Adamantium would cause an explosion like with other things. (Also, there was one scene in the original where he charged a card and dropped it to force Morph to drop his Professor X disguise and he let it fizzle out.)

I do NOT understand your issue with Jubilee flirting with Sunspot in this episode. Personally I think it's refreshing that she's flirting with someone around her age, and not getting paired off with some adult man like the original series consistently did. I just did a rewatch of the original series and seeing grown men flirting with Jubilee all the time was very gross, and definitely a product of its time.
Don't know if anyone has said it yet but the comic book accurate original xmen team was cyclops, Jean, iceman, beast, and angel
Looking back on this show, one of the worst things it did was turn Gyrich into an unapologetic villain. He's always had a grating personality, but he was never evil in the comics. Heck, I've got an issue (Avengers 368) where he walks into the Xavier Institute and flat out ask's for Xavier's (and Beast's) help with a mission. When I started reading the comics (like Thorias, this show was my gateway) the biggest shock was seeing him act like a respectable government agent...

There's a theory on Jean Grey is going to be Madelyne Pryor a clone of Jean Grey who gets manipulated into becoming a villain named the Goblin Queen. After a series of traumas, which happened in the comics. Since hasbro made an action figure of the Goblin Queen in the X-Men '97 wave. I'm guessing the theory is right.
So Morph was captured and recruited by a man wearing lipstick who calls himself "Mr. Sinister", and as a result of all that mind-fuckery, when he comes back, he's now identifying as non-binary?
Totally tracks for me, but somehow I think the writers didn't think this through.

I could be wrong but in episode 3 morph briefly changed back into his "original" form. But he was referencing Sinister when he did it and was super sad. Maybe the writers were trying to convey that his original form is attached to Trauma for what Sinister did to him.

And more importantly, Morph was never a founding member of X-Men in the original show. That was some forced retcon BS in that old group portrait in this new show

I'm a black guy. My entire childhood, I saw white action heroes dominating my screen. Even as an adult, I love those old shows and movies. Like, they don't like the way the world is now, and it's easier to just point fingers and go "it's those people's fault, they're the cause!" instead of just... learning to adjust. So they obsess over the people they blame for that like "if they would just stop doing X then things would be the way I want!" Or something to that effect.
I’m extremely cautious about this show. I loved this show growing up. But the cg choppy skipped frame animation looks terrible. I’ll wait till the full show gets released and watch the reviews before I invest time in it. Otherwise the series ended in the 90s for me.
It's supposedly 3D animation with a 2D filter and purposely chopped up animation to try to emulate 90's 2D animation.
I think they shoulda just hired Toei Animation and Sunrise Animation like how Marvel Productions used to do in the 80's.
X-Men TAS didn't use them and instead used South Korean studio AKOM....most likely because they were cheaper back then and Fox originally rejected the idea of an X-Men cartoon anyway until Fox Family CEO Margaret Loesch said she'd put her job on the line for it.
She's the one who previously had b en CEO of Marvel Productions and responsible for that 1989 Pryde of the X-Men cartoon pilot as well as Transformers, G.I. Joe, Muppet Babies, Incredible Hulk which had all been animated by Toei Animation with Sunrise helping and supervised by Sunbow Animation. That's why quality cause it looked better than AKOM, who they themselves did a lot of Western cartoons in the 80's and 90's but the quality wasn't as good. They'd usually be hired as a B team like for season 2 of Transformers.
Notably though, AKOM did not animate the final six episodes of X-Men TAS. That was outsourced to another studio who was worse. I think that studio was Canadian and had also done 1994 season 1 Fantastic Four cartoon because vod similar art style.
I think they mighta also done Heavy Metal 2000 movie.

@@captaincomic8678 I haven’t seen this actor, but these days, and especially within identity politics, you absolutely can tell the content of their character by the way they look. Vibrant unnatural hair colors, half shaved head, thick glasses(usually non-prescription), hipster outfit, all signs of a troubled individual.
Not judging the cover is meant for those books who care not to upset other, they stay reserved out of courtesy, and people that are into identity politics do not care and will actively let you know it both visually and audibly

@@Drums_of_Liberation They also don't understand Gambit's primary power is *kinetic manipulation.* He can charge objects to make them deal more damage on impact without exploding. He just carries around playing cards because it's more efficient to over charge them until they explode.
I was told some of the voice actors were changed due to them getting old and did not really fit any more.
Yet some of the other voice actors - who are also old - returned and sound like poor impersonations of themselves.
Good review. The show is definitely better than I thought it would be also. And yea, there are a few things that are off character/continuity wise, but I knew they weren't going to 100% remember everything. For me, these discrepancies aren't enough to be a huge issue...yet.
At this point to trust Disney, or any of these false virtue signalers, is on the individual viewing.

When it comes down to it the way entertainment should be judged on these days is story telling, does it keep me glued to the screen and does it make me emotional? If it does all the above then it succeeded.
I’ve seen parts of the original but not all of it. And it certainly entertained me, and made me think quite a bit especially episode 2.

Magneto does take over the school. He was in charge of the New Mutants and even takes on The Avengers with the New Mutants. (Cap called them baby brotherhood of evil) but Charles was still around and had oversight of Magneto.

I have all of the seasons of the original series on DVD, so I'm good. When they announced this I decided to wait before forming an opinion, and I'm glad I did. I'll stick to my DVDs

In the first 2 episodes of this show, they showed Scott and Jean in Professor Xavier's study and they're looking at an old original tean portrait of the X-Men, and in it are Professor Xavier in thr middle (of course) with non blue Hank "Beast" McCoy, Scott "Cyclops" Summers, Jean Grey, and Angel and.....a completely naked Morph in his all white alien look eith...boots.
Only....I definitely recall the original show having an episode where Bobby Drake aka Iceman, returned and had past grievances with Xavier, revolving around his ex gf who left X-Men back then , and then later left bim and joined another team
And it seemed as Iceman was one of the original members in flashback scenes.
So yeah, they broke canon. X-Men TAS canon by doing this revisionist history.
They also just threw this romance out of nowhere with Magneto and Rogue, and before anyone says ' but it was in the comics' yeah nah i mean it wasnt established in the show orior so you cant use the comics excuse.
And lastly, wtf is Bishop doing there.

That wasn't naked Morph but Iceman in his first form from the very first comics. So they still got it right.
