It is one of my favorite Canon EF L lenses since I bought it in 2009 for $700 new. Still using it often but now adapted to my Sony MLC, sometimes using it on my 5D MkII. This lens was heavily discussed in photo forums with some complaining of unsharpness at the corners of the frame which I never experienced with my very good lens copy. Canon later upgraded to the 16-35/4 L EF lens which was supposedly sharper in the corners when shot wider open. Never upgraded from my 17-40/4 L lens - it is a fantastic landscape lens, not too heavy, easy to transport. The used price of this lens is low now for the quality it delivers.

i love it, and yes i agree it is a fantastic landscape lens. The fact its easy to transport is also awesome, since i can toss it in my sling bag and not even notice the weight!

It's great for those wide shots but also 40 mm looks great when you need to get close! Thanks for watching!

Jeffrey, lovely gentle video in a great location. I think the lens is only completely weather sealed if you have a filter on. My 17-40 is still my go to lens after 14 years of having it.

I'm not sure, but that's good to mention! It's always good to have a UV filter attached but I sadly broke my last one and need a replacement. Thanks for the comment!

Great lens, I also use it on my 5d mark iv and in the price-performance ratio, it's a super glass. It is very light, but at the same time resistant to rain and dust. I use it with a protective UV filter.

Great video, I could have watched much more of this one. Great vibes. I just bought a Canon 5d classic, and have an EOS R, and I'm interested in this relatively cheap lens to play around with. I completely agree with your point on noise, people seem to get very hung up about noise, and almost afraid to use high ISO. Modern cameras are incredible for noise, and once you're not pixel peeping it really doesn't take away from most images.

Thanks so much for the kind words! This was a fun video to make and the 17-40 is a great lens and very capable despite the hate it gets. It's funny too that I will see people complain about noise, but they'll add fake grain to photos lol. Thanks for watching!

I have had this lens for a number of years now. I find its very sharp at f8.

Nice, I'm usually at f8 or f11 for most of my landscape shots. Thanks for watching!

It's nice to hear some down to earth thoughts of this lens and see it in action. It's hard to get a sense of it when trashing anything that isn't the latest and greatest seems to be popular when for the vast majority of hobbyists like me maybe this lens and other older gear is good enough. I'm considering this lens for the gently used 5D mk III I picked up late last year (to complement my 7D mk II).

It seems like people love to hate in this lens but for the price it's very capable. plus with the weather sealing it makes it a great lens to take anywhere. Thanks for watching!

@@jeffreysproule Well, I did it. I bought a copy of this lens on the used market for my 5D mk III. I kept thinking I should go for the newer 16-35mm f4 but size, weight and price won out. Your videos on this lens and the comments from others here were the last push I needed.
