What if Crash Simpson really WAS Crash Simpson, the foster father he sold his soul to save? What if Johnny was able to keep him living in a more-or-less Earthlike life instead of continued damnation, but only as long as he remained trapped in the fraudulent Suburbia, and once he rejected it, Crash sank back into unmitigated brimstone and fishhooks?
That would make rejecting his Hellhole trap a terrible choice, requiring Johnny to harden his heart - or tear it from his chest.

I feel like Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch have a similar relationship to Barry Allen and Wally West in that while yes, Johnny and Barry were the original and the most iconic versions of the characters the fact that Danny and Wally had such long, well remembered tenures after them also places it in a position where the two characters need to exist in some kind of equilibrium. Not discounting the other Ghost Riders I feel like Johnny and Danny have to always find some way to coexist as Ghost Rider, almost as if the two of them are like a heroic duo like how Peter Parker and Miles Morales have had to find a way to share the Spiderman name.
Also Ghost Rider standing up in a cloud of smoke saying "Who did this, who caged me here?" Is one of the most legit intimidating superhero moments I've seen in a long time.

    • @thomasraines1396

Also Danny was more of a innovator for the Riders from what I understand, everything they do (fighting with chains, using the penance stare) Danny did first.

    • @shockwave75
      @shockwave75 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I'd almost argue that Danny is the truly iconic Ghost Rider, since it's HIS iconography, the black leather, spikes, chains, that have been stolen for every other Ghost Rider that followed him, INCLUDING Johnny Blaze!

I quite enjoyed it. I like Danny Ketch but Johnny Blaze will always be the Ghost Rider to me. I've always really appreciated the horror element in Ghost Rider comics. I recall a storyline in the original run from the 1970's. In which he'd been captured and the plan was to turn Johnny Blaze into some kind of half man/half motorcycle. Where his legs were removed and his torso was permanently attached to the bike. It was something that really stuck with me after first reading it as a child. I've still got the comic somewhere around here I think. I thought Johnny Blaze was even cool after he quit being Ghost Rider. Back in the early 1990's when he had a shotgun that shot hellfire and his hair was red for some reason.

Ghost Rider has always been one of my favorites as I came to it randomly in the middle of a storyline, when I was a kid. Ghost Rider #44 in the middle of a Midnight Sons story, with Danny Ketch as the Rider, the cover is what grabbed me. Anyway I feel this is more of a wait and see.

They could have gone a really interesting route of the demons desperately trying to keep Jonny in suburbia so they could enjoy a life out of hell. It might have been an interesting look at how people idolize certain lifestyles over others or how much people are willing to sacrifice to gain their perfect life.

I have an idea on what the symbolism of the dog was. The dog was a demon, and the sheriff was taunting the Ghost Rider because he knows the Spirit of Vengeance is a hunter and slayer of demons. When he talks about the dog being murdered, he's poking the Rider in Johnny.

Best Legacy character in Marvel if not runner up if not Top 3 only behind Morales and Khan. Really wish they did more with him. Glad they are finally doing something with him but to be Frank, Jason Aaron, gave him a soft retcon which I am not a fan of. [x]

Personally for the 'are you mad or is all the scary stuff under a veneer of comfortable normalcy real' type stories a slow build up works better. It felt like I had jumped in at the final issue of a run that would have slowly built up the unease & actually made Johnny part of the community (& his family) so his turn against them would have had a bigger impact.

I loved the escalation to the ghost rider coming and thought the pay off was serviceable. As far as the ring is concerned, we get to see it on "Roxanne's" finger when she slaps Johnny and cuts him with it. For me, I figured that was enough to show this thing is an important piece. And is the moment he actually considered the ring. I'm definitely all in on the series, myself.

I remember Garth Ennis did a miniseries starring Johnny Blaze awhile back and Ennis's take was that Johnny was an idiot. Which I kind of agree with, as his origin from way back when really did portray him that way. The character looks great so he keeps coming back, but he doesn't seem to have legs. He needs a writer with a fresh take to reimagine him.

Thanks for posting this, I've been tossing up whether or not to check this out. My little brother and I used to read Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider comics together back when the first movie came out.
Also, thirst! (That's what I'm supposed to say, right? )

Now THAT was a review...It actually made me interested in the character. I mean, I agree ; the tropes were over used and that part was pretty tired, but it was still a mystery with a truly suffering main character so...interested. You want to see if he gets out of it, right?
    Anyway, lovely video

    “His high school sweetheart” aww
    “And step-sister”… wait what?
I know next to nothing about Ghost Rider, just what’s been in the movies and AoS so anything else is very new to me.

It’s his adopted sister not his step-sister. They are not related. And, Blaze was adopted when he was 13. So he had a crush on her since he was “adopted.” Moreover, he was never truly adopted. More like he was taken in and taken care of. [x]

Neat. I just read Damnation: Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider num 1. He gets a piggyback ride on Elephant-man (who's already dead and in hell) turning him into... Elephant-man, but on fire. As if cybernetics, super-soldier serum, exo-suit, and being a bearer of The Crimson Gem of Cyttorak wasn't enough, he's now a flaming double-damned ghost... still in hell.

I enjoyed this, but have the same sort of feelings as I did about the previous iterations of Blaze's GR (all the way back to Alejandra); Jason Aaron's run felt like such a capstone to the stories of Blaze and Ketch that subsequent relaunches haven't really done much to bring anything new or particularly interesting to the character. That's why Robbie Reyes worked so well; without all that backstory and convoluted/ rewritten origins and continuity fudges, his Ghost Rider felt new, different and fresh. Which is why his book got cancelled after 12 issues.
Blaze is a GR I've struggled to get into (I grew up with Danny Ketch and Zero Cochrane). I love his origin - selling his soul to save a friend, only to end up bound to the demon Zarathos - and the ending of his original run, but much of the middle sixty issues of that run are him just faffing about in search of a direction for his series. Never understood why his supporting cast were written out so early on, leaving him a bit aimless. The retconning he's had this century to basically steal the powers and look of Ketch's GR (arguably the better of the two 'classic' Riders - still love what Ivan Velez did with Ketch) hasn't sat right with me, and I wish Blaze wasn't constantly written as some sort of dumb-ass. I miss the sharper and more assured characterisation he got in the '90s.
I'm interested to see where this goes for as long as it lasts (Ghost Rider hasn't done well in recent years) and I wonder, if we're building this back up, that Blaze could get actual Roxanne, Emma and Craig back. I'm sad that they're always now shown as dead - adds emotional weight as a loss, I suppose, but not when we've seen so little of them in 50 years of GR comics.

The eye in the scar was cool, but I think it would have been better if it was a set of teeth, the scar even seemed to contort into a smile for the eye.
Reason why I say teeth is it could be a possible symbol for the ghost rider trying to "get out" or something along those lines, whereas the eye doesn't really do that for me (ghost rider doesn't have eyes) and in the story it doesn't seem to have much importance (Johnny seemed unaware of it, it was only for the audience) so it just seems to be spooky for the sake of being spooky.

Despite some of the flaws in the storytelling, this still looks awesome! I love the Johnny Blaze/Danny Ketch versions of Ghost Rider and I love this is inspired by John Carpenter and David Lynch! =D Need to check this one out! =)

Great recap of the anniversary issue and it’s backdrop. I’m reminded of a Swamp Thing issue where he wakes up and everything is suburban bliss and he even looks non monster. Honestly, I’m excited about his, much like the EC style Wrightson / Wein Swamp Thing (or even the Saga of Swamp Thing run) ran with the horror and supernatural storylines; that the Marvel Universe doesn’t always have to be stories about the end of the world or titanic fight in tights. Horror is better as a personal story that cuts to the visceral emotional level than “Ghost Rider in Spaaaaace!” and I might go pick this up if it sticks to this. I’m definitely moved to reread some of my Marvel Ghost Rider phone book collections (b&w and thick as a phone book).
Totally agree that there isn’t that emotional wrenching like say Superman in “for the man who has everything” realizing his son isn’t real.
Also, props for giving credit to the letterer and colorist, oft overlooked and invisible when it works, jarring when it doesn’t.
