If crocs have been around for 200 million years & can go without food for months & even years, then they've gotta be declared the number one Top Survivor on planet Earth.......
Many jellyfish, insects, crustaceans and fish would put that 200m years to shame tbh. Horseshoe crabs for example have been around a loooooong time.
As large animals go however, yeah they are up there.
@@BullDogBreed75yeah but crocs do so while being on top of the food chain and living up to a century. Big crocs only die of overgrowth rather than old age.
Its more complicated that that, modern crocs only came into existence in the very end of the Cretaceous. Its just that the body plan of "underwater ambush predator" convergently evolved in a related group several times.
@@krislochlan5366 It's the same with crabs, certain animal "designs" are just inherently well suited to survive, and thus evolution tends to converge that way, even independently and over again.

I didn’t even know crocs had a light side
They are divine creatures created by God, and they act as they are created, just like you and me and the rest of the world....
They're pitiless eating machines.
All thier compassion is for their young, for a short time.
After a while, that evaporates too and their young disburse or get eaten by their mothers.

Shouldn't this have been more properly titled as " Mostly Hippos" , or a Few Crocks and their Family Members? What is the FULL SPECIAL entitling PBS in regard to...the Komoto Dragons depicted in the first one-fourth of the video?? PBS must be a new name for producers to utilize; it lacks the integrity of a " Real PBS " special of any sort.
Right? Especially since Hippos are the ones some people mistake for peaceful creatures, nobody ever thought crocodilians were cuddly pets.

Nature happens but I’m not ashamed to admit I got choked up over the lioness who was mortally injured. The thought of the pain and despair she was in just hurts

A lion that can't bite is a dead lion .. getting bitten by a croc is almost always a death sentence
We need a Timestamp to skip that lol. Most animals dying doesn't phase me. Big cats dying hits me hard though.

Loved how the companion birds of the hippos were flying off and on while they were fighting...one even held its own during the event😂

I was very impressed by those birds. The birds in my garden fly away every time I do as much as opening a window.

I enjoyed every minute of this documentary save when the baby hippo was injured. It is amazing what some animals have to put up with, just for the chance to survive. Thank you.
Probably the best nature video I Ever saw
I never get upset when watching what happens in nature. It is all part and parcel of the instinct to survive and procreate. It is what it is.
But when I saw the tragedy of the lioness with her jaw ripped off , now that hurt.

Naw the hardest part to watch was lioness wound by far, half its face was off 😭
Those little birds going up against monitor lizards are true heroes.
They purposely build their nest on the ground next to the Crocs for security. They act like the alarm in a security system. If I'm remembering correctly the Croc will come investigate if it hears them. The negative side for the birds is that the croc may accidentally step on it's eggs.

@@fukkitful also after the Croc has had a meal it will sit there with its mouth open and the birds sit in its mouth and peck the meat out of its teeth, that's true teamwork and trust

@@stuart23969 Forgot to mention, that species of bird is called Egyptian Plover (Pluvianus Aegyptius) and what you mentioned could be called a symbiosis, but well, it cannot. I’m sure you heard that from someone else or a TV show, when it is NOT true, it is a theory and it was never confirmed and it was never documented. They eat insects not rests of crocodiles prey. And if you look at Google you will find images of it on a crocodile mouth, unfortunately those are ALL photoshopped, sadly you fell on a Fake News.
What a welcome change from all those other videos I've watched that are always concentrating on the fluffy, light hearted, cuddly side of crocs.

Great title. Most people are too resigned to the thought that crocs are so cuddly, friendly animals with sweet dispositions and nearly angelic in their nature. Always seen helping wounded animals to cross rivers and taking other for a fun carnival ride with their silly lips, spinning round and round. What fun!
Good thing this documentary has come along and shown all these people of the world that they can occasionally have grumpy moments too. Just like the sinister giraffe and the untrustworthy aardvark.

This is the best combination hippo and croc documentary! I love how they show even lions who can't stand up to a hippo! Again though the relative calm between a hippo and a crock is pretty interesting basically tolerating each other and regard each other with curiosity rather than attacking each other. 5 stars on this documentary!

Like really dude what is it exactly you don't like I mean I've seen every croc documentary on TH-cam n this is one of my favorites prolly also because they mix it up and make it interesting! Most people wouldn't think a hippo and a croc would actually get along! I was pleseantly surprised by the fact tbh so keep smoking what your smoking cus it's dulling your brain

@@jasonslowiak7546 Very large crocodiles like Gustav have killed hippos when latched onto their neck in a surprise ambush. Also younger feeble hippos are regularly eaten by crocodiles.
The lioness part was pretty brutal to watch. Can’t even imagine how terrible a feeling that must be. 😢
At first, I thought it was meat she was carrying and not her entire bottom jaw just hanging freely. So sad.

That was brilliant!! The bit where every time the red billed bird tried getting one of the baby crocodiles and the mother crocodile would jump out at it and scare it away!! I bet the bird was thinking “ how is it doing that?? “. “ it knows where I am every single time!! “.

This video should be titled the dark side of hippos with occasional crocs.
My late father and now my grown son and I have watched wildlife with Sir David for over 60 odd years the knowledge it has given is enormous , to all wildlife creators film making thank you for the hours and hours of education you shared . My late farther told me as a child you can travel the world from your own living room with the programmes god bless u all 🇬🇧🙏🏻👏👏
Bro the fact that the croc is able to crush bone in the same jaws that it can crack an egg to help a hatchling get out is just super gnarly to me

I have seen the mortally wounded lioness in more than one doc. Can't remember from what she was wounded by , just so heartbreaking. Totally well done koudose to photographer and script writer !

The face only a mother can love.
I know that death is going to happen regardless but it was heartbreaking to see the baby hippos mom still standing and guarding it even after it passed. And that the lioness died the way she did. Sad 😔
Found it far more unsettling when it did nothing as the baby was drowning right beside her

Animals out in the wilderness have it hard. i know we shouldn't tamper with nature but I really do wish the cameramen could help the animals when they saw this happening. The lioness broke my heart, I had to skip forward because I couldn't stand to see her in that state

Thank you. For some reason this video had a much clearer picture than most other videos. The animals looked very beautiful, hippos, crocs, Nile monitor, and lions. The camera workers did a great job!
I was curious if others added similar comments to mine. YOURS is the same!! We all perceived somethings in the production that made this particular piece .... amazing. Some style elements are hypnotic.

Monitor lizards just look like they're always up to something, the way they slink around. Kinda like weasels or raccoons, they have a suspicious way about them.

Just like raccoons, they’re pretty adaptable in cities, namely in Thailand.

Those baby crocs have great instincts and are fast. At first I wondered how they survived at all.
You have to remember that crocs live for a long time. So in 60 years, for instance, all it needs is for two baby crocs to survive to adulthood and breed for the species to continue. Three to survive and breed, and the population grows.
This must be the companion video to The Lighter Side of Crocs. Those lovable underwater playmates.
The whole environment and all of it's denizens just made my skin crawl!!

It's exhausting being a human mother but jeez I genuinely feel bad for these croc mamas. She literally can't catch a wink of sleep without everything trying to eat her babies. Then they wonder why new moms are always cranky and in a bad mood.
I feel bad for the croc moms who got days of foreplay and minutes of actual mating 😂
That's no excuse for human mums. Given what croc mums have to put up with, humans should be able to maintain a pleasant disposition.

You will never ever convince me animals don't experience feelings... like grief.. sympathy... empathy... they do... you see it all of the time. There's a video of a lioness helping an old lioness that had trouble eating by holding open the carcass for her... she came up to the carcuss ONLY to do that... help her sister.. mother or aunt... they care for each other..

That Lion's jaw that was hanging in the intro was insane and looked very painful!
It was fatal. An animal cannot eat without a working jaw, so that lion died slowly of starvation.
Very apathetic! I felt for the lion
It is painful, with 15 i broke my Jaw in a motorcyclecrash plus i lost alot of my frontteeth, at least we had good healthcare back then and they fixed it, i took 6 weeks until i could eat again

That lioness that got mauled, what a truly horrific injury...
Why didn't we see the footage of the lion getting mauled by the hippo instead of just the severe trauma afterwards? With their agility, I can't understand how the lion didn't escape.
Maybe because it wasn't filmed. The animals aren't waiting until the cameras are rolling and director calls action.
That really made me cringe. Just to imagine the pain and then the terrible drawn out death from starvation, if it doesn't die from infection first. Or get killed by another animal. I'd have shot her just to put the lion out of its misery.
Or just was too gruesome to be shown either way we know what happened why do we need to see it in HD

There was more footage of the lion wandering around the water's edge. Was heartwrenching watching her try to get water and couldn't. The lion is already down to skin & bones so she's had the injury for some time. That makes me doubt the accuracy of the narration claiming a hippo attack.
No matter what side of a croc you're on it's the dark side.

Yes it's like lion cubs. They're really cute to begin with and if they try to eat you then, it's just funny. Until they can. I always wanted a monkey. Until I learned they'll rip your face off and steal you beer.
That gave me a giggle. Maybe just get one croc, then the two of them won't fight when you take them off.

I love how birds just chill on hippos. These are two animals (along with gators) that scare the living piss out of me. I hope I never encounter one in the wild.
Crocs carry 200 million years of evolution with them, so they don't need to have bright side😉These r ultra efficient, cold blooded dinosaur amphibian predators who r respected and feared both on land and especially in the water. Truly an astonishing prehistoric creature evolution has created for us to understand, respect and protect. Crocs and alligators certainly kept and will surely continue to keep their irreplaceable role in nature's cycle of life. Thx for sharing this vid!
