But in your other videos you have explained long column as those having effective length 12times more than its least lateral dimension. And in this video you have explained it as 20times... Can you pls explain the discrepancy???
Any rule of thumb is simply that, a rough estimate of the point where behavior transitions from one type to another. It is best to check any possible failure more. For example, for members in compression, check crippling (critical for short columns) & Euler-Buckling (critical for longer columns). Better yet, check Euler-Johnson buckling, which accounts for both and the interaction of the two in the transition range.
