How To Remove Old Yellow Stains

- This is a dry cleaner’s guide to removing old yellow stains (usually caused by sweat and body oil’s aging overtime):
1) Pretreat the soiled areas with a solution of warm water and a few drops of dish soap. This will help remove any remaining oils.
2) Handwash your hat. It CANNOT go into a washing machine as the cardboard or plastic brim WILL get messed up. I have made this mistake so please don’t do this.
3) Soak your hat or garment in the hottest water you can get and powdered oxygen bleach. Let it sit overnight (oxygen bleaches require lots of time and heat to work so please be patient).
4) Let it air dry and then inspect.
5) Repeat the process if needed
You can also swap out step 3 and spray down your garment with 3% hydrogen peroxide and let it air dry. HP is also an oxygen bleach.

I've always just put our dirty and sweaty hats in a delicates bag and tossed in machine with the clothes (cold wash) and usually into the dryer afterwards. Guess I've been lucky all these years as no hat is destroyed yet, just faded colours maybe after many washes.
you can buy a hat cage as well and it will protect your hat from damage.

Not an issue at all if you do it enough. I always hand wash my dishes and just stopped lowering the temp from next to boiling at some point as it simply is too much work adjusting it over and over
I have had great luck for years using the top rack of the dishwasher to wash these. You need to be careful how you load them so they won't move around and also so the water can hit all parts of the hat (especially from the top).
And Yes, scrub any sweat stains with a scrubby brush and Dawn liquid before putting it in the dishwasher.
Soaking them with a dishwasher pod in hot water works great as well.
Well I've washed my running hats in the washing machine for years - or the top rack of the dishwasher and they have all be fine
Question! is this method or spraying hydrogen peroxide and air drying better for removing yellow sweat stains (after using antiperspirant) from shirt underarms??

the funniest thing i have seen was that someone put their hat into a dishwasher 😂 it worked 😂
Or COMET + (dish soap or detergent )with some hyrdgen peroxide and hot water from the kitchen sink. Use hair dryer 15mins, air dry or tie a string to the dyer door to the hat and go one drying cycle. DONE. That takes 30mins to an hour.
I have tried soaking and washing with dawn and oxcyclean however I have had white hats turn yellow when drying.

there are hat frames used to keep the hats shape so you can wash it in the washing machine.

I've been washing my Stetson caps and they come out okay. Brim is fine.
you can machine wash a hat, the brim will be fine unless its made of cardboard, or if you have no motor function, then you wont be able to figure out how to reshape it...
the structure in the forehead is what you need to be careful of cus it can warp and theres no fixing that.
You actually can machine wash hats. Because they have this little apparatus that they made to put a baseball cap in that keeps its form and its shape. And you just stick it in the washing machine and wash it. Can you keep it in the app rise and stick it in your dryer.
I spray white hats with Clorox Cleanup, scrub with a kitchen brush, rinse and hang to dry. Perfection!

Use sodium perborate. A hat can be washed in the dishwasher.
Yes you can wash hats in a machine. You just have to know how to do it right. I wash my ball caps when they need it and the brims come out just fine.

@@cleanfreaks Not plastic. And after the wash, I set the up for air drying. Some people get and use those forms that you snap the cap into ..... it protects the shape of the brin. But, I am able to clean my caps without that contraption. It's a matter of learning how to do without one of those gismos.

Yes, you can wash a cap in the washing machine. Just don't put it in the dryer.
Why do you use dish soap and not regular laundry detergent for the first bit? I do that too and I'm sure many others do, I'm wondering how that became ingrained in us!? Whats in it that's not in detergent? It it just the degreasing element?
I think its a bit easier to find / readily available than dish soap but I totally agree that pretreating with detergent would work better! Great point

Yes! Oxygen bleach = color safe bleach so you're good to go

I scrub mine with dawn and rinse well then shove a towel inside to retain the shape, keeps my hats going for years till they get to sun burnt

so clearly people don't know this but hats used to be lined with cardboard after lead, and before plastic. Baseball hats explicitly still use this old method still. If its not a baseball hat it probably has a plastic brim.

Hat washing cages are available. Pop your hat in the cage, pop it in the washer.
