I love how you care about the minutiae of this fascinating craft, I've made dozens of belts and wallets but only 2 straps so far and neither were what I would call A1 but the father in law loves them and you got to start somewhere. I really want to make some respectable vintage-esq straps like these and this video is just amazing! Next step is buying some leather and practice, I've not done any leather work since I lost the one eye to cancer so wish me luck and again thank you so much for these videos!

Thanks for sharing the process. Nice leather strap. I would love to bring an brown color to that watch but using same deployant but mesures are quite different to any other strap. Now with your video, being also a DIY guy, I believe that with enough patient, i will be able to create one for me, but where do I start with what tools? Thanks again for sharing your art
I am impressed. I only disassemble and reassemble watches, never realised how much work goes into a leather strap. Would you try to create the rubber-titanium thingies as used by Rolex too?
I make rubber backed leather straps, Rolexs new rubber strap is more of a bracelet covered in rubber from my understanding. Not really my cup of tea. Most people don't know what goes into a high quality strap glad you enjoyed a look at this one.
Thank you for this excellent video! Can you comment on how folded/remborde edge finishing compares to the painted edge technique shown here in terms of product quality and manufacturing time required?
If you strop the 9mm knife blade with green rouge, or start with a new blade when cutting down the watch band to 18mm, you can cut it in one shot and the cut is cleaner and easier to finish.
I bought a vintage Omega recently and I’ve been thinking about a bespoke strap. Then this video popped into my TH-cam suggestions! Wow. This strap is close to what I have in mind. You mention it’s expensive , but not how much it would cost? Before I start looking seriously and possibly embarrass myself, could you give me a clue to the cost of this strap please.
Nice , I like vintage Omegas. Strap pricing varies a quite a bit, you can take a look at my site which I'd say is middle of the road for bespoke work atelierdjames.com/product/bespoke-watch-straps/. You'll find more expensive ones as well as cheaper.
Can you list all the tools I need ? And do you sell the 3d printed molds? I'm looking to make bands for myself. Unfortunately, I have a big wrist, and I have a hard time finding bands for the watches I restore.
Great video and tutorial. Do you make, and can you show how to make a curved end leather strap? I mean the ones that fill the entire gap between the lugs of the watch like a metal bracelet endlink. I think some of those have some plastic inserts. I didn't find any proper "how to" of that. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words. I made a video on curved end straps a few weeks ago which would hopefully be of help to you th-cam.com/video/bGX0Jk77vug/w-d-xo.html
@Wasting-Time-oc7jl I saw that one after posting my comment, but it's not what I was thinking. I ment the ones with straight spring bars, something like Hirsch Medici for example. Thank you.
I see what you mean. I don't make that style of strap so I can't help you there. You're probably right though that they use plastic inserts. Good luck with the investigations!
www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005983918670.html I have a few sizes the one i use most is C 1.0MM also i used these adaptors www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005823180927.html I just made an adaptor from m5 to m4
Not many places sell velodon. If you didn't get it yet I can recommend Al's Leather in Singapore, shipping is a bit expensive but Al's fast and reliable. Also delivers to the UK alleather.com/products/reinforcement-paper?_pos=1&_psq=velodon&_ss=e&_v=1.0
I think painted or edgekote edges are a lot quicker than using gum trag or saliva and burnishing time and time again unless you don’t sand in between and use a power tool for burnishing.
hope you can help, how do you make a true leather curved edge watch strap, with curved spring bars, every thing out there has those horrible plastic inserts?
Overly fussy is why I'm in business 😂 it's possible by changing punches from obverse to reverse. It's not done as standard by anyone I know of, but I can do it on request.
Do you sell watch straps? I have a bigger wrist and cant ware à l'éther strap becaus they just dont sell straps other then standard. You would realy help me out if you do. Tx
I pretty much deal with large collectors and watch shops at the moment. I thought about selling to the general public, but I'm not set up for it yet. That said, if you want, you can email me at david@saving-time.link and we can work out the details for what you'd like. large wrist size is not a problem.
I've tried many different types of straps and leather combinations, my favorite are lamb skin, ostrich and elephant leathers. The lamb skin in particular is very soft and comfortable on the wrist.
Lamb skin is a great liner and also works as a top leather a little delicate perhaps. I love Ostrich. Never tried elephant. I imagine the import export laws around it for makers are somewhat complex .
Fake leather has it's place a bit like chipboard does; however, fake leather is not as strong or durable as the real stuff. I've made a fake leather strap for a client who wanted a very specific painted leather. I do not recommend it at all, but at the end of the day, I'm here to make items that fit my clients specifications, not my preferences.
Very interesting. I think you should just put things like this on your main channel though and they would get more views. For the non-specialist (the vast majority of your subscribers ?) it is not really different viewing to the things you post there. Not many (if any) TH-camrs manage to run a second channel with more then a small percentage of their main channel subscribers.
I'm glad you liked it. The reason why I think TH-camrs start a secondary channel is not, or I can only speak for myself here. But for me, it's not for more views. The TH-cam system is awful. If I put a video out on my main channel that's not popular with my subscribers, say making a wallet, I run a very good chance of seeing my entire channel die. It's a difficult system. This channel I'm just going to make what I like, and I don't really care if TH-cam shows it to people or not. I hope they do, but the point of this is just so I can put out random stuff and not have to worry about bowing to the almighty TH-cam algorithm.
Fair enough but you are saying the second channel *is* for more views but more views on your main channel. I think you underestimate how popular this particular video would be on your main channel - your USP is watch straps and this plays right into that. Agree that something entirely off piste like making a wallet should be here.
Sure I agree watch straps would 100% be a fit for the main channel and I'll have them there for sure, this one just went here as it was an hour long and I did not think a 2 hour long bulova video would go down well. My idea with straps was to have a short one 10 mins or so integrated into a restoration video which I think is enough for most people. Then do a deep dive here for the people that would actually want to make one. But really I expect this will turn into a place where I experiment with content and take suggestions from people like yourself on what would fit the main channel and what would not.
I watched this even though I have no intention whatsoever of making a watch strap or indeed of restoring watches. Just like 99.99% of the 800,000 who subscribe to Wristwatch Revival. I mean Hand Tool Rescue is another, 1.1m subscribers and absolutely none of those want to actually restore a 1904 vacuum cleaner themselves. In many cases the actual content is pretty irrelevant, it’s the creator we’re interested in. Anyway, keep up the good work !
@Wasting-Time-oc7jl I think you've got the right idea, the long format suits us ocd watch people. It's funny I'm in le locle at the moment taking a bench test. I just watched your Bulova video 😆 I'm hoping to become a watchmaker that specialises in restoration work. I've relaxing and learning at the same time, so thanks for making good content.
Well, good luck to you, sir. I hope to get over to le locle myself at some point, My friend and partner in crime on the Bulova video, Lindsay, is based there. I'm not 100% sure but i think she holds classes on dial restoration from time to time for watchmakers. You could always shoot her a DM and ask if you're interested: instagram.com/arcstampfli/ Best of luck - David
@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl Thanks David, I have sent a message to see if she has any time free, will see if she responds... If not I can come back another time, hopefully when I'm here for education. Thanks for the well wishes, hopefully I get in, I think I've passed the aptitude tests so it remains to be seen if I get a position or not. It's very competitive here XD
Why is it so expensive, well it's usually down to plain overcharging, as the material used is very small so even an expensive leather would not demand much to make such a small item. I never pay more than £30-40 on a strap. I buy alligator/croc straps made in Vietnam, great quality and looks good, they cost usually £25-30. I don't mind paying hundreds for a good quality watch, or even thousands. But a strap?? It loses nearly all value after it's used so to buy expensive straps is bad economics.
@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl I agree with that, it's just that when I sell the watch on a year or two later literally no one is willing to pay any extra for a nice strap....
Sure, if your just buying and selling watches, then I'd just bung a cheap strap on them as well. I will give you this warning.I'm not trying to be funny here; this is something I've seen happen. 99% of alligator or crocodile straps from Vietnam don't come with CITES certificates, and if you don't have paperwork on your exotic straps, do not ship a watch on them; customs will destroy the watch along with the strap. A friend of mine had a Vacheron Constantin destroyed this way. Its why reputable auction houses remove exotic straps from a lot of watches before shipping.
@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl Yes sure, sending an alligator item abroad is a risk for sure. The sellers seem to have adapted and describe them as “artificial leather”. I have had one strap destroyed by customs already. Criminal that they also destroy the watch itself, I didn’t know that!
Most people don't. The simple fact is that you'll pay someone like me a lot more for exotic skins because I obey the law, and that's expensive. My straps ship worldwide with no issues. The straps you are buying are illegally imported, and obviously it's cheaper to buy something illegal that's made by someone making $200 a month. It also potentially supports the criminal industry around the harvesting and pouching of endangered spices. I don't buy the stuff because i consider it immoral, which to me is more important than the price but hey, i'm not the moral police. My stuff is extensive simply because it takes around 3 - 4 hours of skilled work to produce a strap, and I'm not working for $1 an hour. Money has power; it has velocity, and maybe supporting a local craftsman in your area and paying a bit more will ultimately lead to a better quality of life for you and yours. But i'm just a strap maker; what do it know ;)

I make rubber backed leather straps, Rolexs new rubber strap is more of a bracelet covered in rubber from my understanding. Not really my cup of tea. Most people don't know what goes into a high quality strap glad you enjoyed a look at this one.
Looks fantastic, great video!
Thank you! Appreciate that
Thank you for this excellent video! Can you comment on how folded/remborde edge finishing compares to the painted edge technique shown here in terms of product quality and manufacturing time required?
Brilliant my friend thank you for your video

Greeting from Prague. Glad you enjoyed the video
Can you give links to the soldering iron creasing tools
Great work, great information.
A great video, thank you for this work.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
If you strop the 9mm knife blade with green rouge, or start with a new blade when cutting down the watch band to 18mm, you can cut it in one shot and the cut is cleaner and easier to finish.
Thanks for the tip, Scott!
Great, just a pleasure to watch the video ..
Thank you; it was very nice of you to say.
Would like a video on making watch hand levers. Tried a few and find bending the levers results in a mess.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try and get to it at some point 🙂
i love you so much! I recently just found your nkuwan and i’m in love!! Your videos are so fun and you energy is just MWAH! keep living your life
Welcome aboard!
Can you list all the tools I need ? And do you sell the 3d printed molds? I'm looking to make bands for myself. Unfortunately, I have a big wrist, and I have a hard time finding bands for the watches I restore.
Hi from Russia! Amazing handcraft!
Thank you! Cheers!
Well done young fella, fascinating video.
Thank you sir, glad you found it so.
Can you do a video on alligator leather straps
Sure expect one soon. It will be crocodile but it's pretty much the same to work with
Have a source for that soldering iron crease tip?

@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl thank you!!
Could you please provide a link so that I can get some Velodon in the UK. I have been using ultra thin nylon but it doesn't glue too well.. Thanks.
Not many places sell velodon. If you didn't get it yet I can recommend Al's Leather in Singapore, shipping is a bit expensive but Al's fast and reliable. Also delivers to the UK alleather.com/products/reinforcement-paper?_pos=1&_psq=velodon&_ss=e&_v=1.0
Wonderful job, congratulations !
That's something i would like to learn to do... May be one day... 🙂
Well i just posted a tools video on the channel so if you ever want to give it a go, this might help th-cam.com/video/Cpxnl916xtU/w-d-xo.html&lc
@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl thanks a lot Sir !!
I think painted or edgekote edges are a lot quicker than using gum trag or saliva and burnishing time and time again unless you don’t sand in between and use a power tool for burnishing.
I agree. If I'm not in a rush though, I find the burnishing process quite meditative.
Excellent video- thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
hope you can help, how do you make a true leather curved edge watch strap, with curved spring bars, every thing out there has those horrible plastic inserts?
th-cam.com/video/bGX0Jk77vug/w-d-xo.html here you go sir! I hope that helps
Thank you so much !
Please, where did you buy the yellow template? Can you help?
Brilliant video ❤
Thank you 😁 Glad you liked it.
Great video ❤
Glad you liked it!!
When punching stitching holes, I may be overly fussy but would prefer holes to point different on either side / \
Well done! 😃
Very enjoyable
I like your jokes as much as your excellent work
Cheers, there's a lot of gallows humour going on both in watch repair and strap making as disasters hit regularly :)
Beautiful
Class.
Thanks 😊
I've tried many different types of straps and leather combinations, my favorite are lamb skin, ostrich and elephant leathers. The lamb skin in particular is very soft and comfortable on the wrist.
Lamb skin is a great liner and also works as a top leather a little delicate perhaps. I love Ostrich. Never tried elephant. I imagine the import export laws around it for makers are somewhat complex .
What is your opinion on fake leather? Can it reach similar characteristics then real leather? Would you ever make a fake leather strap for a client?
Fake leather has it's place a bit like chipboard does; however, fake leather is not as strong or durable as the real stuff. I've made a fake leather strap for a client who wanted a very specific painted leather. I do not recommend it at all, but at the end of the day, I'm here to make items that fit my clients specifications, not my preferences.
Simple watches dealer buy straps from Srap makers. To matched their over prices watches , they have setup over prices straps .
Grazie !
Glad I found this one! Already subbed your other. Hey, how did you know I started a channel called artisanal crafted toilet paper???
Lol I'll take 2 sheets maybe 3 if you have some sort of buy now pay later option.
Appreciate the feedback btw sort of what I hoped this place would bring in
I watched this even though I have no intention whatsoever of making a watch strap or indeed of restoring watches. Anyway, keep up the good work !
you did good from Steve in Hong Kong
I’m an american, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think a British accent makes anything more enjoyable 🫤
Well, it is the evil villain accent for a reason :)
20th subscriber woo hoo!!
Thank you. I hope I can produce some content worth watching.
I disagree with you I think the tools that you build and make an altar are way better than most people could buy
Sure but if you start with bad steel your going to end up with a bad knife. That said there is a lot you can do for sure.
You can buy thin leather SMH
Why is it so expensive, well it's usually down to plain overcharging, as the material used is very small so even an expensive leather would not demand much to make such a small item. I never pay more than £30-40 on a strap. I buy alligator/croc straps made in Vietnam, great quality and looks good, they cost usually £25-30. I don't mind paying hundreds for a good quality watch, or even thousands. But a strap?? It loses nearly all value after it's used so to buy expensive straps is bad economics.
'a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.' - Oscar Wilde
