What makes some watch straps expensive? Let's find out.
มุมมอง 19Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Join me as I take you through the creation of a handmade, bespoke watch strap, in this case for an Omega Deployant. Hopefully, I'll show you everything you need to know to get started creating your own high-end watch straps. We'll look at the materials used as well as the sheer amount of time and work it takes to make something like this, and with some luck, I'll answer the question of why stra...
Very informative, very entertaining, very educational, and very interesting to watch. I take my hat off to you, sir (supposedly hand-made, but probably isn't)! 😉
Great video, VERY detailed. I love it. Keep it up. Thanks
An excellent and informative video. A beautiful strap. And an excellent video. Thank you.
Nice work! Subscribed! #699 Cheers from Canada
Entertaining, educational ad inspiring. It was you cufflinks and vest that hooked me. Style, and class. Liked and subscribed.
Stumbled upon this channel. I must say this is gold.
Very enjoyable
Beautiful
I've tried many different types of straps and leather combinations, my favorite are lamb skin, ostrich and elephant leathers. The lamb skin in particular is very soft and comfortable on the wrist.
Lamb skin is a great liner and also works as a top leather a little delicate perhaps. I love Ostrich. Never tried elephant. I imagine the import export laws around it for makers are somewhat complex .
Nice very nice 👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video ❤
Glad you liked it!!
Nice work. Loved the detailed presentation. It was very informative. God bless and thanks for a great video.
So nice of you. Thank you
magic....
Thanks
Why is it so expensive, well it's usually down to plain overcharging, as the material used is very small so even an expensive leather would not demand much to make such a small item. I never pay more than £30-40 on a strap. I buy alligator/croc straps made in Vietnam, great quality and looks good, they cost usually £25-30. I don't mind paying hundreds for a good quality watch, or even thousands. But a strap?? It loses nearly all value after it's used so to buy expensive straps is bad economics.
'a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.' - Oscar Wilde
@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl I agree with that, it's just that when I sell the watch on a year or two later literally no one is willing to pay any extra for a nice strap....
Sure, if your just buying and selling watches, then I'd just bung a cheap strap on them as well. I will give you this warning.I'm not trying to be funny here; this is something I've seen happen. 99% of alligator or crocodile straps from Vietnam don't come with CITES certificates, and if you don't have paperwork on your exotic straps, do not ship a watch on them; customs will destroy the watch along with the strap. A friend of mine had a Vacheron Constantin destroyed this way. Its why reputable auction houses remove exotic straps from a lot of watches before shipping.
@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl Yes sure, sending an alligator item abroad is a risk for sure. The sellers seem to have adapted and describe them as “artificial leather”. I have had one strap destroyed by customs already. Criminal that they also destroy the watch itself, I didn’t know that!
Most people don't. The simple fact is that you'll pay someone like me a lot more for exotic skins because I obey the law, and that's expensive. My straps ship worldwide with no issues. The straps you are buying are illegally imported, and obviously it's cheaper to buy something illegal that's made by someone making $200 a month. It also potentially supports the criminal industry around the harvesting and pouching of endangered spices. I don't buy the stuff because i consider it immoral, which to me is more important than the price but hey, i'm not the moral police. My stuff is extensive simply because it takes around 3 - 4 hours of skilled work to produce a strap, and I'm not working for $1 an hour. Money has power; it has velocity, and maybe supporting a local craftsman in your area and paying a bit more will ultimately lead to a better quality of life for you and yours. But i'm just a strap maker; what do it know ;)
Looks fantastic, great video!
Thank you! Appreciate that
Brilliant my friend thank you for your video kind regards James fae Scotland part of the uk 🇬🇧
Greeting from Prague. Glad you enjoyed the video
What is your opinion on fake leather? Can it reach similar characteristics then real leather? Would you ever make a fake leather strap for a client?
Fake leather has it's place a bit like chipboard does; however, fake leather is not as strong or durable as the real stuff. I've made a fake leather strap for a client who wanted a very specific painted leather. I do not recommend it at all, but at the end of the day, I'm here to make items that fit my clients specifications, not my preferences.
Nice video. (I watched it all) I’d be interested in seeing how you make various different strap types.
Coming soon! Glad you enjoyed the content
i love you so much! I recently just found your nkuwan and i’m in love!! Your videos are so fun and you energy is just MWAH! keep living your life
Welcome aboard!
When punching stitching holes, I may be overly fussy but would prefer holes to point different on either side / \
Overly fussy is why I'm in business 😂 it's possible by changing punches from obverse to reverse. It's not done as standard by anyone I know of, but I can do it on request.
Fantastic skill set. I love the red on the inside of the strap. Beautiful
Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it, I'm a fan of colourful linings
It's unbelievable. I just made a comment about 4 hours ago suggesting that may be you can make a video with everything one needs to start making watch straps, and here we go. You just posted. Thank you so much in the name of all the people in the world that need this information. This is awesome. Thanks again.
You are welcome I'll do a materials video soon.
Amazing craftsman. A lot of pride in your work. Just a pleasure to watch. I thought your video was well done.
Thank you very much
Very good and detailed tutorial. I would like to try my hand on making watch bends and I think I will succeed. The problem I have is that I have no idea what materials and tools I need to start with. This is just for my own use .I will not open a business or try to sell them. If it will be possible for to make a short list of everything you need and also suppliers I think will be very helpful for a lot of people like me. I don't want to reinvent the wheel. You already did it and you are very good at it. Thank very much for a great video and I am looking forward for more of them.
I did a video detailing the tools you will need here th-cam.com/video/Cpxnl916xtU/w-d-xo.html I'll do one on materials in a few days
Your work is beautiful and I enjoyed watching from start to finish. Love the vid mate 👍
Thank you
Totally captivated for the 51 minutes. Thank you for sharing with us. Subscribed.
Thank you I'm glad you liked it
Absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for sharing. Beautiful work.
Thank you and you are most welcome. Thanks for stopping by
Nobody wants a elbow injury
Truly mine went on for months, 1/10 would not recommend
Incredibly well made strap and nicely made video to boot.
Thank you I appreciate the feedback
This was wonderful; I cant wait to see what you show us in the future. thank you very much. PS: I usually feel the same way at parties. I would much rather talk about ideas and things; As well as learn from interesting people. Thank you Scout
Well if you ever run into me I'd gladly spend an hour or two discussing the relative merits of different style punches. Over a pint or two of course
@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl I trained at NSCAD for jewelry so i dont know much about leather work but i love to learn new things. I havent been in the studio for a while as the foreign market has distroyed the hand made jewelry market but i plan on firing it back up again. Work is about to get really busy so it might be a bit yet, but id love to share
Love the video, subscribed! I might actually give it a go myself. I also follow leather shoe maing and repair videos, but that's a bridge too far atm to try myself. Also love that the video is unscripted, makes it more genuine (don't have to keep repeating it though). Some close up footage would be great next time. For the stitching, could you show what you do with the loose ends?
Sure I'll add it to the next video. Appreciate the feedback and good luck if you give it a go
Glad I found this one! Already subbed your other. Hey, how did you know I started a channel called artisanal crafted toilet paper???
Lol I'll take 2 sheets maybe 3 if you have some sort of buy now pay later option.
Very useful information. Thank you. Could you let me know what glue you use? I noticed that you use what seems to be a water based contact adhesive.
Great video. Ive made a few watchstraps, but have never really been fully satisfied with the end result. Watching this helped a lot. I'd like to see more on stitching with information on what thread size etc. Looking forward to your next one Liked and subbed
Thanks. I'm glad you got something out of it I did a tool video on the channel that covered more information on threads and what not. Straps are hard to make; you need a very high degree of precision. A bit of practice, and you'll be fine. God luck
Do you sell watch straps? I have a bigger wrist and cant ware à l'éther strap becaus they just dont sell straps other then standard. You would realy help me out if you do. Tx
I pretty much deal with large collectors and watch shops at the moment. I thought about selling to the general public, but I'm not set up for it yet. That said, if you want, you can email me at david@saving-time.link and we can work out the details for what you'd like. large wrist size is not a problem.
Brilliant video ❤
Thank you 😁 Glad you liked it.
Accidentally bumped over your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Quite thought provoking. Cheers!
Glad you liked it. Thank you for letting me know
Thank you!
You are welcome, hope you found it of some use.
Wonderful job, congratulations ! That's something i would like to learn to do... May be one day... 🙂
Well i just posted a tools video on the channel so if you ever want to give it a go, this might help th-cam.com/video/Cpxnl916xtU/w-d-xo.html&lc
@@Wasting-Time-oc7jl thanks a lot Sir !!
Suggestion for the next part: adhesives, types of glue and purpose
I will add that to the next video. That's for the suggestion
Well done young fella, fascinating video.
Thank you sir, glad you found it so.
Would like a video on making watch hand levers. Tried a few and find bending the levers results in a mess.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try and get to it at some point 🙂
Love the watch strap videos!!!!
Thank you!
Brilliant! Love it. 😊 Thanks so much 🙏
Thank you I hope it was somewhat helpful
Hey David, I love the strap making videos. I may give it a go soon. Thanks for the tool tips. I actually like the on-the-fly style videos.
Thank you so much for letting me know. I'm still finding my feet with this new channel.
I would also add that if you give it a go, which you should :) it's a lot harder than it looks but don't let that put you off. Just don't get discouraged if the first 20 or 30 end up in the bin; mine did lol
Excellent video. Lots of good information and instructions. 👍🏻
Cheers James nice of you to say. I am glad you are enjoying this style of content.
Most excellent strap making. Superb guide showing whats really involved in bespoke watch strap crafting. Wish I were as skilled as this in leather work.....
Thank you, glad you enjoyed seeing the process.
God damned! Sir!!, that is so beautiful artwork this your way to doing these!! And quality is bullseye! Thank you for this video full version! I have posible see all these steps what need to do! Very helpful! Big thanks for you! 👌👍☺️✌️🌻☀️❤️
Thank you. I'm happy you found it helpy
I am impressed. I only disassemble and reassemble watches, never realised how much work goes into a leather strap. Would you try to create the rubber-titanium thingies as used by Rolex too?
I make rubber backed leather straps, Rolexs new rubber strap is more of a bracelet covered in rubber from my understanding. Not really my cup of tea. Most people don't know what goes into a high quality strap glad you enjoyed a look at this one.
