They started at about the Same time. The Beach Boys were founded in Hawthorne California in 1961. They released their first single Surfin which was a single produced and realized by their first manager, their abusive father Murray Wilson. Murray is the reason why Brian Wilson is deaf in his right ear since he slammed him with a board when he was three. The Beatles. I know ringo Starr first officially played with the Beatles on August 18th 1962 after the firing of Pete Best. Pete had been playing with the Beatles for the better part of two years but his drumming was not good enough for recording. George Martin had strict recording standards. Plus th Beatles like the camaraderie with ringo and they got along well plus he’s a damned good drummer and always was according to John Lennon. The Beach Boys reached their fame and popularity about roughly one year before the Beatles and Beatlemania as it was called came to America in February of 1964 and their performance in the Ed Sullivan Show. 1963 and 1964 were pretty good for The Beach Boys.

@@nielgregory108 The Beach Boys & Beatles have always had this mutual appreciation society. Brian heard Rubber Soul that inspired Pet Sounds and Paul McCartney said Pet Sounds inspired Sargent Pepper. This was their First Number One Hit, after Fun Fun Fun. It didn't go to Number One because the Beatles were in the Top Ten with Five Hits at the same time. Their Father Murray didn't like it but he was a very jealous and bitter man who hated the fact that The Beach Boys made it and he didn't. He was also insanely jealous of Brian's Talent. When they did the session, they got into an Argument and Brian Fired him.

@@laminage their father was Murry? I didn't know their dad was involved with the group at all. I'm not positive but how many brothers in the group 4? I know Mike Love wasn't related but good tidbit about their dad being involved. That would be hard to deal with because I'm thinking Brian was more about the music but I'm figuring dad was more about the dollars. Sorta like Michael Jackson's dad being that way. Brian was musically gifted and all of that music in his head could have been more of a curse than a gift. I only say that because of his mental health in the later part of his life. Just a thought not a fact.

I see this a lot in the comments sections of reaction videos, but think about how often you listened to music that came out decades before you were born. I went to high school in the nineties and thus listened to a lot of nineties music. My dad played a lot of seventies rock, but as most teenagers do I would roll my eyes and not really pay attention. Oh, trust me as I got a lil older I realized my mistake, but still finding great music from before I was born to this day. I'm just saying, there are probably some good rap songs that you have never heard, and may never hear. I have friends that listen to rap exclusively and calls any rock band I play Led Zeppelin. That's just the way it is, different strokes for different folks. This is one of the reasons I like to watch reaction videos, because most are going into it open minded and I enjoy seeing the realization in their eyes when they hear a "banger". I don't think any of them stop listening to the music THEY grew up on though, they just expand their tastes.

The Beach Boys were all about the fun. It was sun, sand, and surf (although most of the group members weren't really into surfing, especially the genius of the group, Brian Wilson). They and the Beatles emerged around the same time, but the Beatles were in England while the Beach Boys were topping the charts in the U.S. The Beatles' records started to be heard on American radio in 1963, and then they came for their first U.S. tour starting in Feb. of 1964. At that time, the American public was in shock over the assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy (JFK) in November of '63. So the Beatles were a big distraction from the pain, especially for young people. Over time, the two groups were rivals, but in a productive way: the Beach Boys' groundbreaking album "Pet Sounds" and the Beatles' equally groundbreaking "Sgt. Pepper's Lonelyhearts Club Band" continue to be debated regarding what influenced what, and which is the most influential album of the decade, in terms of future directions in rock songs, production, and performance.
The truth is that both groups took their inspiration from artists of the 50s and early 60s, including Little Richard, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, and others. The signature "doo wop" sound many groups used evolved in the post-WW2 era (1945 and after), especially during the 1950s. It was street music, originally black kids hanging out on street corners in urban areas, then other urban kids, especially Italian and Jewish guys from immigrant families. But doo wop's roots are in black gospel music from as far back as the 1920s.
One great doo wop group of the 60s -- and probably the last one to make it big before the genre ceased to be a separate category -- was one of the only other American bands to compete with the Beatles for the top spots on the American pop charts of the decade, the Four Seasons. There were also a bunch of great girl groups that used similar harmonies and beats, including the Ronettes, the Crystals, the Dixie Cups, and the Shangri-Las. You can hear holdovers of those harmonies in the early Supremes' songs, although the Supremes towered above every other girl group of the 60s, basically in a class of their own. They, too, were one of the only groups to really compete with the Beatles here.
Here's a basic fan site (not mine) about the early history of doo wop that lists early influential groups: www.onlinerootsofrock.com/doo-wop/

Lots of songs back in the 60s were only ran about 2 1/2 minutes or so to accommodate 45 rpm records and radio play. As soon as you heard your new favorite, you'd rush out and buy it on a 45, then stack them up on your record player at home. The Beach Boys were three brothers: Dennis, Carl, and the genius Brian Wilson, and two of their friends, Mike Love and Al Jardine. They formed in 1961 and began cranking out top 40 hit after hit. The Beatles formed in 1960 and gradually gained fame in England and throughout Europe, although their early songs like "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" were played on US radio and made fans clamor for them to come to the US, which they finally did in March of 1964 when they made their historic TV appearances on Ed Sullivan. I would say they were equally famous during the mid to late 60s, however the Beatles' music began to get much more deep and complex, compared to the lighthearted Beach Boys sound. The Beatles, however, never toured much at all and were broken up by 1970, whereas the Beach Boys toured a lot until Brian Wilson began to struggle with severe mental illness; his two brothers, Dennis and Carl both suffered early and tragic deaths as well. They were both two iconic bands, pillars of popular music, whose many and varied songs remain classics to this day.

Great review, great band a lot of good music. Another band you might want to check out is the Ventures, "Wipeout" "Pipeline" & the theme song from "Hawaii 5-0" are the ones I remember, Instrumentals(might contain 1-2 words), beach sound was huge in the 60's.

"I Get Around" is probably Brian Wilson's best song 'hook,' but the Beach Boys album, "Pet Sounds" was his masterpiece.

The Beach Boys first album was '62, Beatles recorded Please Please Me in 1963.
By the end of 1963 the Beach Boys were the biggest band in the US. When the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan in early '64 that changed.

They both started about the same time, except The Beatles were in England for the first two years of their recording career. The Beach Boys were here in the US, so Americans heard the Beach Boys first. There was a big friendly rivalry between both bands. They both respected each other and had nothing but good things to say about each other. This song is an example of the early Beach Boys. Later Brian Wilson, which was The Beach Boys, produced great masterpieces rivaling The Beatles. What is amazing is The Beatles were four musicians plus their producer George Martin, who is considered by many the fifth Beatle. Brian Wilson did everything for The Beach Boys...write the songs, arrange the harmonies, and produce all their records. Brian is a musical genius, but The Beatles were and are the greatest. Love them both.

Speaking of the Beach Boys and the Beatles. Supposedly the Beatles Rubber Soul album was the main influence for the Beach Boys Pets Sounds album which was then the influence for the Beatles Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album. So the Beatles and Beach Boys actually had an impact on each other.

Your checking out The Beach Boys??? Way to go! One of the best groups of all time. If you like this song, then you should check out their song Good Vibrations. Like The Beatles, The Beach Boys experimented with different sounds and instruments to produce unique sounds in their music. Other songs if you interested are Surfin' USA, Help Me Rhonda, Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Little Deuce Coupe, Sloop John B., When I Grow Up, Little Surfer Girl, In My Room, Don't Worry Baby, California Girls (one of their most well known songs), and Kokomo (from the movie soundtrack Cocktail starring Tom Cruise in 1988!) You might have heard Kokomo as well because they play this one a lot on the radio and on commercials. So glad you are expanding your music knowledge. Music from the 50's and 60's help shape what modern music is today. Still, I like the old stuff a lot more because it's just good music! Enjoy the music!

So back in their day they had their sound nailed down. Their harmony was over the top, consistently and that's not easy. Their guitars gave off that beachy note, somewhat 50ish sounding. It all blends so well that even to this day it hasn't gone stale. They were a wall of sound to be sure.
The Beach Boys were over here quite a while before The Beatles came on the scene.

I heard that when Brian Wilson would write music at home, he had to have sand under his feet and had sand brought in to fill the floor under his piano. The Beach Boys first single was released 1962 with the Beatles a few months later in 1963

Mike Love, their cousin, is the low voice. Band also had Mike's cousins the Wilson brother, Carl, Brian and Dennis. THAT is why the harmonies are sooooo good cos 4 of the member are family. The Beach Boys were first before the Beatles got here, but they both had a mutual admiration society going on. They influenced each other

Great reaction, great song, the beach boys were super talented singers, but its brian wilson, their leader, who was the genius song writer behind them who also came up with and wrote all the harmonies, brian wilson is on another level.

This is the first song on the album “All Summer Long.” That was one of the first albums in my collection as a kid! It was my mom’s, and she let me have it because I played it so often! There’s a great motorcycle song on it called “Little Honda” that I loved so much! I later got my own little Honda 🏍 and I used to ride around and sing that song. 🎶 first gear, it’s alright, second gear, I’ll lean right, third gear, hang on tight, faster, it’s alllriiiiight... 🎶 !!! 😂

The BB were formed in 1961 , the Beatles were actually formed in 1957 but went through many incarnations till winding up with the four that became know to the world and that would be in 1963 . That was the year that John ,Paul , George And Ringo appeared as the Beatles . Before that there were other members like Pete Best ( the drummer before Ringo ) and Stuart Sutcliff who died early . They were also known as the silver beetles at one point and as John and the Quarrymen before they became BEATLES, a name John came up with . I believe The Beach Boys actually had a song on the charts before the Beatles did but I may be wrong on that one . I’ll check

The "Best of the Beach Boys Sounds of Summer" and "Endless Summer", those 2 albums have most, not all but most of their best music. All their music transports me back to my teens, I lived 10-15 minutes from the beach growing up. Two of the lesser known gems I can never hear enough of is "Getcha Back" and "Good Timing". Great stuff.

    The sound of summer.
    .
You're hearing three brothers and their best friend. Many years of harmonizing made a tight style that sounded like nothing else. Much like CSNY a few years after them, the Beach Boys' voices meshed into a unique unit that was widely loved as the signature sound of Southern California in the early to mid-60's. Sun, surf, sand.
