Hey bud. I’m having the exact issue. Replaced the thermostat with whatever the parts store gave me and didn’t fix issue. Went to ford dealer and they entered my VIN and tried to give me the thermostat that the truck was built with. I had prior knowledge of the “updated” part with the plastic tip so I told him about that. He went in the back and got it for me. I believe the number is the same as the one you are posting about. Changed it yesterday and still didn’t help. What do you suggest now? I’m leaning towards replacing the water pump now just to see if it helps. Also I am using the orange coolant and I seen on another post that ppl are saying to use the yellow instead. Thoughts?

I have a 2018 XLT. After Cam Phaser replacement this is EXACTLY what was happening. I'd get on the highway at 75 to 80 mph and the engine would heat up. Not completely overheating, but it would heat up enough to raise eyebrows. Also, the electric fan was running almost constantly. It sounded like I was driving a jet airplane! After replacing the thermostat with the new, updated thermostat, this solved EVERYTHING. Running great now!

I had the same situation almost exactly. After phasers we’re replaced on my 18 f150 this past winter, once the weather warmed up, it would consistently get warm and show a digital temp once it reached 228. I saw it get as high as 240ish once. (August at 75-80 mph) Dealer replaced the thermostat, gasket and housing. All good for now. Mileage was roughly 45,000. Thanks for the video!

I never had a temperature issue in my truck. I only saw 225-228 degrees when towing up long grades on the highway. I had my coolant flushed and thermostat replaced by the dealer. Now the truck runs way hotter with and without the trailer. I normally see 230 on a slight incline no trailer. When towing I often lock it in 7th gear on climbs to maintain 230 degrees. I took it back to the dealer they said everything is fine and “that’s just how these trucks run” 2020 ford raptor. Wish I had a tech like you.

Nice work, I've found the same problem on lots of 17-20 F150s. Most are not even overheating but the customer complains of the Engine Fan running high/ loud more than usual. I've monitored the temp and found it runs near 10'C colder with a new thermostat installed, from near overheat to perfect Operating Temp. The Original Thermostats are pretty shitty when closely inspected, they wear and stick closed like u said not allowing full circulation when the engine needs it. The Fan's are so damn good that the thermostat has to be completely failed and the engine worked hard to overheat as the fans just ramp up speed as the temp increases and move a shit ton of air. I suspect most near 100 000kms could benefit from a new thermostat and the yellow coolant but most people don't have long enough drives or notice the fans. Probably that nasty Pink/ Orange coolant that made em fail in the first place.

Which brand thermostat? I just bought a 2018 3.5 ecoboost with 36k miles and I got p0018 and p0021 the 2nd week I owned it and then the CEL went off and the fans have been running hard since then, supposed to be going to a Ford near me since I bought it 3 hours away. Fml

      @kingpuff10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@joelexline9 Just Oem from the dealer, thhe part numbers are constantly updated for parts that are shitty. As for the Cam codes, kinda odd for the second gen eco to actually set cam codes if its full of clean/ proper oil and somebody hasn't messed up changing the VCT gears. If the Fans Roar all the time and full of coolant its probably not overheating. The same Gens have a common AC problem that causes the Fans the run high. If they start roaring after driving/ high loads, Probably thermostat. Can monitor Temps with Scan tool.

Been following you for awhile. I just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I have 2018 F150 3.5 with 48k. I had my passenger turbo replaced in December. Afterwards I noticed I was running hotter than usual. Just had my cam phasers finally replaced last week. Told the dealership that I had been running hot, above 230 unloaded. They said they road tested it and found no issue. My Ford pass app confirmed they only drive the truck 2 miles so I guess they really didn't care to review my concerns. After some research, I decided to install a new thermostat myself today. The problem is completely resolved. Thanks again!

I had cam phasers done on my 2018 and I have this issue. They did replace the thermostat because I immediately complained. They assured me it’s normal (2 dealerships) and on the highway I run at 230-240. Right after the repair I was even hitting 250 if I ran at 55mph (low rpm in 10th gear seemed to make it even worse). I hit over 250F with ambient at -5F! I’ll be running by my dealership this week and showing them this video. Been dealing with this issue for a year.

What you have described is exactly the issue I had on my 2018 after phaser replacement. My truck would not get hot enough to go into power reduction mode , but would get close while towing. Ford told me it was normal. I knew it wasn't. The dealer and Ford refused to do anything about it, so I took it to a Lincoln dealer (other Ford dealers refused to repair it even if I paid) and the Lincoln dealer flushed and filled the system with a thermostat replacement. Everything is back to normal. Ford now refuses to reimburse me for any repair despite having video evidence of before and after.

Dealer couldn’t find an issue. 3 days later while on vacation temperature suddenly goes through the roof and overheat warning went off. Pop the hood and coolant is all over the engine. The inlet and outlet hose were blown along with thermometer. Wish I had seen this earlier. It may have prevented a major headache, tow, and larger repair cost. It never got over 220 but I was only pulling 3500lbs and in 50 degree weather … my old truck could tow my loaded enclosed trailer in august at 90 degrees, with the ac blasting and never go over 212. Had the 17 f150 3.5 down to him for rear pinion seal replacement and to search for coolant leak. He replaced thermostat and seal with the one I supplied him with (not OEM). Prior to him getting the truck I did have a low coolant situation, but couldn't find an obvious leak and had temps climbing into the 230's+. As I said, he replaced the parts I supplied him with and I'm still getting temp spikes at highway speeds, in 10th gear mainly AFTER I let off the accelerator. IE cruise control up the highway at 75mph, 10th gear, and cancel the cruise control as I'm approaching my exit. Temp numbers will appear over temp gauge, 226-230+. Cam Phasers have NOT been done, but need to be. 100K miles on truck, all stock. Thoughts? Thanks for everything you do for us on here. Your videos have helped many of us out, more then once! God bless

I was pulling a really small trailer but don't think I was going over 60. On my trip back nothing and I was going over speeds of 65 some of the way. I don't drive my truck much but I'm taking it to Ohio in August which is an 900 mile trip for me one way should I replace my thermostat or could it just have been an air pocket. My reservoir was on the low mark when i got it back i did fill it to the correct level. Should I take it for a run on the highway and do some tests thank you so much for your help.

My truck never seemed to actually overheat but the cooling fan has not acted the same since the cam phaser replacement. Ran on high for a day or two constantly and now it’s just when I’m slowing down from highway speeds it will kick on for a few seconds and then shut off once I’ve come to a complete stop. Annoying as all get out when a repair causes something else.

This solved exactly the same problem I had. But, now another problem, I think is related. driving at 65 mph towing a trailer that is 1/2 the capacity of the truck (so not overloaded at all). Before the thermostat fix, truck would overheat at any speed above 55 mph. Now it is running fine, not overheating. Then suddenly after towing for about 1 1/2 hour, the engine suddenly reduces power, truck slows to about 40 on its own, the dashboard flashes red that there is severe overheating, the temp gauge shows really high (this was all sudden), and check engine light starts flashing. I immediately stop. It was raining at the time. Let it sit about 10 minutes while I search for the nearest Ford dealer. Start it and it is fine, no overheating.
Four days later on my return trip, the check engine light comes on, but not flashing.
I get home, read the codes. Code is P0012 A Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 1). And a code for overheating.
The P0012 code for bank 1 was what I was getting when it was doing the CVT rattling, but always just on bank 1.
So, was the engine retarding to protect itself from overheating so it kicked the code out? And if so, why only bank 1? If it retards, to self-protect, does it retard both banks?
    And why the overheating?
My dealer is stumped. They said there is a new possible isse with debris in the solenoid, which they have not yet serviced. Ideas? Thanks.

My 16, F-150 has been at NTB for over a week now. I took it in for….AC stop blowing cold air, high temp & message on dash was “power reducing”. They said i would need to replace the water pump, thermostat, O-rings, gaskets and belt. I agreed since I’m at 150k so I wanted to be preventative and just do it. Now 9 days later they still don’t have this fixed. Would it be in bad taste to recommend they check the part number on the new thermostat? I don’t want anyone telling me how to do my job especially when they are not an I.T. person but I really need my truck fixed and back on the road to get to and from work. They have said it was probably air bubble, potentially a cracked block, sensors and different pressure tests.

We have a used 2017 F150 that we have this condition on. I've been battling it for a while. Started as consuming coolant and overheat, it was leaking water pump. Shop assured me they used Motorcraft parts upon my request and filled under vacuum, including parts you listed.
I still have an overheat like that, I bought a new thermostat and will put it in (from what I've read they tend to fail out of the box sometimes).
If that's not it, what else could it be? I don't think the cam phasers were done on our particular one. It's a Platinum, so should be gen 2 of that 3.5 Ecoboost.

I'd like to share a concern with Degas Bottles on 3.7 in PIU . Where small hose attaches to Gegas Bottle there is a sleeve in that fitting. On High Mileage Police Car Sleeve will move towards Degas Bottle and block off flow. I found it because the cooling system could not self bleed air on top of coolant in Degas Bottle. A small Search and Destroy on Old Bottle Confirmed problem. Seen at least 3 Bottles in our fleet with this concern. (Can Not Blow any Air into Bottle). Just thought I'd pass it along.

I just completed the cam phasers and timing chain/ all timing components after my water pump went out. Figured it was one cover away and I’ve had the start up rattle a while. After completion the Truck runs great but it’s overheating at highway speeds and idle after a long run. Thought it was an air pocket and had it vacuum filled today. Drove 30 miles and degas bottle dropped an inch. I installed a brand new water pump and thermostat and housing. Housing had corrosion on parts where the hoses slide over so I ordered a new one that was smooth and wouldn’t leak. The housing came with a thermostat I never even took it apart to look at it. Possible the thermostat is faulty? All parts were ordered from ford. Temps getting to 240 at times in this heat. Also I think the active air damn may be damaged investigating that tomarrow. Gonna prop it open. Thanks for any help.
